I am having an error of adding a ringtone and it showing up in my sound options, but it is not playing any sound. I removed the song now a few times and added it again and I finally got the song to work... but my sounds list has it showing up 3 times now. One plays and the other 2 do not.
Any know how to remove the unwanted items? Overall I searched the folders and they only have one track in the folder.

I have the same issue. My Note has duplicated my ringtones and notifications six times now. Unmounting the SD card use to solve the issue but that no longer works. Only one file shows up in the file explorer...
Can anyone help us?

I found this thread. I followed the instructions and the problem has been fixed for now. But the stock ringtones and notifications are gone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840467
I did not see the media storage file in the file explorer to back up. Not a big lost but some of the stock sounds were okay.
UPDATE: the above fix did not solve the issue. My ringtones have started to duplicate themselves again.

This has happened to me about 2 or 3 times now where my phone will get sumthing like a email and having already preset my notifications it will play a totally different one from The one I selected for instance I set my phone to ring audio1.mp3 and it would be fine then randomly a random file will play from my phone and I look in settings under notifications sounds n it would be changed to audio2.mp3.
It's not always the same one it changes to..and there's not particular time it does it ...well not dat I've noticed..happened once while I was browsing,once when I restart my phone, and once just out of the blue in idle..hasn't really gotten too annoying yet but just wanted to know if anyone else experiencing it..

It's happened to me before, I noticed it always happens after I add/delete files from the SD card, or after the SD card gets "prepared" like after a reboot or something.
Hmm bumping to see if we can get an answer....

This was mentioned in the rom thread but seems to have gotten lost, so...
I've put an .mp3 into my /system/media/audio/ringtones to use as a custom ringtone. Reboot and there it is in the ringtone list. Select it and all is good.
BUT, in a couple of days it disappears from the list and the ringtone is reset to something else.
The file is still in the right folder. It can be fixed with a reboot, but still kinda annoying.
Any idea what's going on here?

i set mine through zedge... i was gettin the defualt rings if i would setup the ring through sound~
... it is odd....but works now... . like i said..set through zedge..workd for me
I set mine through handcent, because it allows the usage of custom ringtones, and I've never had a problem.
Put it in /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones/ instead. Give that a shot.
I had this happen with my alarm clock. I put an ogg file in system/media and after a few days there were only 3 ringtones to select. I even tried some apps from the market and got the same thing. I've been flashing nightlies on top of eachother so I assumed that caused it.

Ha, I didn't even know that there is a /sdcard equivalent for ringtone storage. I'll give that a shot.
Although, I am a little concerned about "ring lag", but curious enough to find out nonetheless.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
I've had all my ringtones reset various times when flashing CM7 nightlies (granted i'm on a NS4G now)... but still happening... which is a huge PITA when I have custom ringtones for many of my contacts. I just found an app on the market that apparently backs up the specific database where these settings are stored.
It's called Backup My Tones (on the market)
running srf1.2, genocide 2.0 (w the newest voodoo)...
recently i noticed my ringer would stop sounding off on it's own after being on for a while. rebooting my phone will undo whatever that is...
what annoys me is that when i go to settings and change the sound, it'll force close on me saying "Activity Android System (in process Settings) is not responding."
any clues what i should do??
Yep, I have the same problem.
I am on a Desire with a Miui ROM.
Are you using any call blocking software? That messes up the ringer.

I had the same issue once. Formatted data and redownloaded my apps. Copied sd card contents to pc, formatted sd card, and moved contents back. After doing these steps the issue went away for good.

Hi,
I'm still on non-rooted stock and I can't for the life of me figure out what's causing this wakelock. I reset the whole phone to factory defauls and closed all apps, still won't go away!
Please see ss attached
Any ideas?
Thank you!

If you have reset and it still happens, this points to perhaps something on your SD card.
I had this a while back before I rooted. A number of things can cause it, but this is what worked for me;
I had a music folder called 'Allsorts' which had LOADS of tracks and Power Amp tried downloading album art for the lot. Somehow mediascanner got stuck on one of these pictures. Once I deleted all the album art out of that folder, it stopped happening.
To quickly determine if this is something on your 'SD card' getting mediascanner stuck, put a .nomedia file in the root of your SD card and reboot your phone. See if the problem stops. If it does, you then just need to move this .nomedia file from the root into other folders to narrow down the location of the problem.
Failing that, backup everything on your SD card, and then reformat it. If it stops, move stuff back a bit at a time.
Only other things I can think of are;
Try turning off 'Sync Google Photos' & 'Sync Instant Upload' in your Google account sync settings.
or
Turn off 'Pocket Mode' in sound settings (always turn that off IMO - silly option)
or
Turn off 'Screen Lock Sound' in sound settings. (not sure about this one. Just read somewhere it caused someone wakelock troubles).
@wnp_79
Thank you for your elaborate and detailed response! It would appear the problem is indeed with some files on my sdcard. I'm trying the nomedia file on my music folders now. Thanks again!
On Google Now options...turn off from any screen.
when i increase the vol or decrease it, the phone makes a popping sound. i've disabled audio on button press etc, i've deleted the UI folder in system/audio but it still does it.
i hate pointless sounds like this so please how can i disable it? on wanamlite 3 btw.
From system/media/audio/ui delete
