Has anyone else plugged their S3 into a high-quality pair of headphones or other soundsystem? Is the quality poor for you? I've tried Spotify (with quality set to High) and YouTube (on HD), and with both apps, the output to my headphones is very "dry" (it sounds like it's coming from an old radio). Any attempts to mess with the equalizer only result in worse-sounding audio.
Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me? I'm running a Telus ROM on a U.S. AT&T phone, so I'm trying to find out if that's the problem or not...
Sound quality is just perfect for me and I'm on stock. It could be either headphone jack damage or the rom is somehow causing it.
Stock ICS on my S3
Nope, mine sounds great on high quality headphones.

Might be your device. Running stock LI5 and been listening to 320kbps music from sdcard... sounds good on my S4 klipsch.
Update: I just remembered that in the past, once or twice I plugged my headphones in completely and it sounded like there was no bass at all, sounded "flat". I tried plugging in the headphones a couple times to test the jack and had the same results, and I switched between PowerAMP and Google Music to see if it was an app thing. A reboot fixed the issue...
Yeah, sounds good over here. But awful with the ****ty headphones. All depends.

Make sure your headphones are plugged all the ways in.

Not for nothin I hated my gs3 just for the sound quality until I downloaded beats audio off the play store and it sounds incredibly better get it try it like it lol....... one thing to note is that you can't remove the drivers after install but really the sound will improve so much you won't care
I use PowerAmp from the Market and it was hands-down the best money I ever spent on an app. I set the EQ to Pop and it sounds fantastic both on my Skull Candy's and in my car (stock VWJetta system).

The sound is quite good on Galaxy S3. I have experienced bad audio sounds on my previous Galaxy S2 when running a custom rom. And that's one of the reason I haven't installed any custom rom yet on Galaxy S3. The sound is also amazing when using bluetooth in my Honda Odyssey. If you are on stock and still experience bad audio quality, then get a replacement.
Regarding the headphones, I use Bose MIE2, Ultimate ears MetroFi 220, and Klipsch S4A.

I noticed yesterday while listing to the radio through my bluetooth the audio is not as loud as I would like
Your audio source sounds like your problem.
If you want the best sound don't use a phone.
Also Spotify and YouTube aren't exactly flac or wav quality
Find a dac and be happy.
I use the SIII daily at work for decent listening but for serious listening I have other devices.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like it might be my custom ROM that's causing the problem. I'll give it another try, reboot a couple times, and hope it gets better.
I normally use BT for my audio, but I also use the headphone jack to plug into my car system. Yesterday I used the white Samsung headphones for the first time. I noticed that at very low volumes, there was bad hiss and musical artifacts. However, I never hear that with my BT headphones, and I never hear it in the car using the headphone jack. Granted, with the car the volume on the S3 is much higher that when I have the headphones, which may have something to do with it. I use poweramp as my music player.
I've tried several ROMs and the audio is always crisp and clear out if the jack. I plug into headphones, car audio and home surround sound. All sound great. I have found that playing with DSP can really tweak a better sound though.

Maybe your audio jack is dirty/defective, for my iPod touch I used to turn it off and get a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol and clean it for better connection. Maybe it might work for you.

The audio hardware on the GS3 is excellent. At least as good, probably better, than any of my other portable devices(laptop, sansas, ipod, half a dozen random phones. I have a pretty good ear and Denon AHD2000 headphones.
I have had problems with custom ROMs and audio quality. Serenity specifically. It would sound okay and then for no reason start sounding like a telephone in the 70's.

Not sure if I have a bad headphone jack or if the loud hiss is normal. It feels like the gain is set way too high and causes sensitive headphones produce a very loud hiss. When using it with my Fischer Audio DBA-02 (43Ω / 108dB), I can hear a very noticeable even with the volume at 0 with music playing. The hiss is close to twice as loud as the HP out on my 5yrs old laptop with the volume at 1. It is also a little louder than my normal listening level even with the volume at 1. I've also noticed distortion at very quiet parts of songs. This can clearly be heard when there's just a piano playing quietly. These don't seem to be as big as a problem with less sensitive headphones. The hiss is half as loud with the stock Captivate headphones and very much acceptable with the stock S3 headphones. The hiss is almost silent with my HiFiMan RE262 (150Ω / 95dB).
Is the hiss on the S3 louder than your other phones? Mines is by far the loudest out of all the phones I've tried so far. I just want to make sure before I bring my DBA-02 to the store to test it with another S3. The hiss with the headphone out on my Captivate is probably 20dB quieter at stock settings and 40dB quieter (pretty much silent) with the headphone amp set to -57dB in Voodoo Sound.

The SGS3 NA version doesnt have a Wolfson chip but it is still a very good audio player.

Ok, so do these things just suck or is it something a good EQ could fix? they seem muffled and sadly my Klipsch headphones were the victim of my electric seats in my car so I don't have anything to compare them to. It seems like they sound better on my G2X, but Volume + seems to work on the G2X where it doesn't on my Galaxy S 2.
Oddly the free version of Volume + does seem to work, but it has no EQ settings. Anyone else noticed any issues here or have any advice?
Music is a big part of owning an android phone for me, if its gonna sound like crap over headphones then I'm gonna be hurting.
PowerAmp has some very nice EQ presets and controls. Now with Version 2.0 it is even better. I guess that Jugs ROM has DSP too for some sound tweaking.
Guess I'll DL DSP manager again I paid Volume+ and it was a great app for a while, guess I got my $0.99 worth for sure.
actually for once, these are very nice premium quality earplug headphones and functional, compared to previous ones from past phone releases, that were of low quality

And they don't sound muffled to you on the Galaxy S 2?
I think they sound better on my LG G2X so it makes me think it's a phone issue. I know it's not ROM as it carried over from the stock ROM to Juggs 1.1
what you are describing might the the audio chip people are complaining about all SGS2 using the yamaha instead of the worlfram whatever chip
have you tried hooking up the earplugs to another player?
i usually stream my music to by Stereo BT headset or car BT player
I don't like tons of treble, and especially hate the mid-highs. Compared to other OEM headphones bundled with phones, they're top notch. If you use SRS HD Audio Lab on your Windows computer, you can get some serious kickin bass out of them, bump up the highs and remove a ton of harshness.
i hate this type of headphones they just keep falling out of my ears lol...... I rather use the standard round ones from my htc lol
i too have small ear holes, so i can only use them for short periods of time, and when i'm not moving around, else they comes off on their own easily
i always buy the over the ear type, those that hangs on your ear
or simply use the big studio headset style which gives WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better sound quality.
in that remark, seems like Sony is now being over taken by skullcandy
you see them EVERYWHERE these days, subway, bus stops, school yards specially, some work places, etc.
if you see anyone using a Sony, it's like WOW! a needle in a haystack
other brands like the german Scheiner (whatever spelling), those are also rarely seen in public now in days
I actually think these are decent earbuds. I use them from time to time on my laptop. I have some better quality sony ones that I use with the gs2 though.
can anyone provide me with the controls for the headset?
(ex: press twice to ff a song, etc)
Hi all!
I have some really annoying problem with my Gio.
When I plug the heaphones, I hear the analog crackles (like playing vinyls).
Have you any ideas?
Stock Samsung firmware, GioPRO 1.4 and CM7.1/7.2 - the same problem.
With DSP Man., PowerAMP EQ/Eff. and without all of this - the same problem.
I get static as well, but not really crackling. Dunno if anything can be done about it. It's pretty common on laptops as well.
So, I must to use my warranty?
I really won't to do this, I don't like to go back to stock 2.3.5, but I think I don't have any chose?
I'd say try to wait for a few more users to chime in and hear what they say. If it's a common issue with this model then it might not be worth risking the hassle of replacing it just to get another phone with the same problem.
But like I said, I'm not getting crackling so it might be only you. I'm using Particle Android btw.
me to do when I put the CPU frequency to a minimum
Maybe that's because the processor to do it slowly
Sorry for my english
Hmmmm, it have sense ;-)
I'll try to make it faster ;-)

None effect. Do you think service will do something with that?
Puck only headphones or speaker,too?
No idea about your warranty, yet my Gio's headphones also do the same thing while playing FM radio. In my case, I think the problem comes from headphones, because I hear the same noise while using them on my computer.

No, it exists on all headphones, what I connecting to my Gio (original Samsung, SoundMagic PL30, SoundMagic E10 and some of others headphones from my friends).
Switch off your 3G/WiFi while playing..
I think this could be the reason.
I think this is normal.
every gio I have seen has this noise on headphones.
but it depends on headphones too (better headphones=less noise)
I dont have noise with iphone headphones attached.
see galaxy gio review in gsmarena. sound quality sucks!!!
I only have noise when on the road. I believe it might have to do with 2g/3g cells.
BTW, with PowerAmp sound quality of the gio is excellent, IMHO.
Bought high end phones today and yes I have little crack when plug in or out phones but dont have any other noise but with cheap phones there was noise all the time when music was off

Same on mine too!
Besides crancles, i only got it working at 100% when i tried with my Creative Zen earphones!
Got a pair of Creative EP480 and now works perfectly. I think that the problem might be the mini jack input, because i´ve got an Sennheiser hi quality headphones and the problem remains.
Don't blame the gio blame the ace too, cuz it has those crackles too....

I had cracles to, but if you set your CPU to not go below 480 Mhz no more cracles for me !
Strange. I suffer the issue only on stock on both headphones and the speaker.
Neither on CyanogenMod 7 nor on 9 I don't hear them.
I've found one workaround. On stock using PlayerPro with DSP pack and increased audio buffer let cracks go.
I have some noise with some aftermarket headphones on my GIO, but my original (EHS60) headset working flawless..
i have a screen off profile set to 122-340 with smartassv2 and that got rid of any problems with the sound for me.
I get a weird warbling/static/crackle noise during any audio playback, though actually it's more of a high-pitched whine that I can barely hear. On phiex's CM7.2 with $40 Panasonic in-ears.
So, to clarify, it's a non-issue for me.

I started to really hate all my music because of the crappy sound that is generated while I listen to music on my bluetooth sony car stereo .
It really sucks and honestly i don't know who to blame is it the phone, is the stereo is it the bluetooth sound capabilities, is the kerenel
Any how listening to bluetooth music sucks sucks big big time on my note 2.
I tried all players poweramp, neutron and all other players
I tried noozoxide, I tried awsome beats all suck
I feel the music especially the vocals get lost in the bass of the woofer, I feel as if the vocals are light and so dull and all I can hear is the annoying treble or bass, if i try to lower the bass I feel my ears are getting annoyed from the irritating sharp sound, I simply Just hate my phone now. If I lower the treble I feel all is going downhill, also playing with the equalizers just f...ks up music quality.
I owned previous phones and at least I used to enjoy listening to music over bluetooth but now I simply don't anymore with note 2.
I don't know if anyone has a magical solution for this, I know many people will blame it on the blutooth but i got myself the sony BTMEX 5100 which i thing was designed to play music over bluetooth.
I don't know if still in this age we still have to use wires to listen to music I hope bluetooth streaming audio quality will improve
I remember even back in the 80s the sound quality of music coming from car stereo cassettes was music more enjoyable than what i get now from this note 2
I really wish someone to shed some light of how to enjoy music over bluetooth
I got tired of that too. I just got an aux cable. Wires suck, but it sounds a lot better.
I'm not having any issues at all with my bluetooth car stereo, plays all my music fine, running thru 2 amps running 6x9s 6.5 inch front and 12 inch sub. I'm using stock odexed rom with a custom kernel. Have started using ViPER4Android audio mod to, mainly for use with headphones. So I'm thinking it's got something to do with your setup and not so much the phones issue.

so you say you enjoy the sound quality over bluetooth
so you say that its the phone set up, can you elaborate on that, you mean I am using not so good rom ( omega 16 ) or could be the kernel, because I am confused which is responsible to deliver good quality sound over bluetooth
I know that I bought a good car stereo
I Have a big question does the sound over bluettooth quality get affected by the kernel or the rom? Or will the sound quality over bluetooth stay the same regardless what rom I use or which kernel
If you want to troubleshoot your problem you have to return to stock IMO

I really like this phone, everything about it is great for me EXCEPT the sound quality. Anything that has to do with the headphone jack is an absolute disaster.
First off I have not experienced the dreaded AUX problem but I have experienced random pausing and skipping - as if I was pressing music controls on my headset - both in my car and on my headphones. I think a headphone jack is starting to wear?
Next I have experienced terrible distortion and static in the left channel, that was until I rooted and Installed Viper4Android. While the problem didn't go away entirely its much better than stock.
Im using my g3 with 3 or 4 devices....
My Acura's line in with Subs/Amps ect.
Shure SE846 In ear monitors
Fiio e6 amp (with the shures, sometimes helps sound quality)
Bluetooth to my Bose Soundlink
The flaws of the g3's sound output are noticeable on any of these, even the bluetooth soundlink and ESPECIALLY, on the SE846 direct.
I created this thread because I dont know what to do, its apparent I am an audiophile and care about my sound quality and youd think Id invest in some sort of MP3 player (I do have a Clip+ ) but I really enjoy using spotify. Should I buy a DAC and just avoid the g3s sound card all together or call and fight with LG and see what they can do?
Is anyone else having these problems? I have the Verizon Device.
I use Westone's connected through a Sony SB52. I haven't noticed any issue except that I like Sony's Walkman app better on my Xperia than LG's player.
I'm fairly picky about music quality and I haven't noticed any issues at all with my HD419s (the only headphones I have right now). Audio quality through aptx bluetooth directly to a car amp and polk component speakers is as good as one would expect too. No skipping or pausing with LG's app. Is that happening when your screen is on? Try turning it off, maybe it's a screen issue? Or maybe it's a glitch with the app you are using? The only problem I had with it was how quiet it was with headphones but the fix with root worked well.
There are several threads about the strange hissing sound - which I also got myself. LG has told me that they're working on fixing it and that it's a known flaw in the current ROMs.
I just got mine and I think this is the best sounding phone I have ever heard. Of course my expectations were very low after my experience with Apple and Samsung.
This opinion is coming from a very jaded HiFi gearhead so your mileage may vary.
The problem I'm facing..
There is noise+distortion+hissing during call
And when headphones are connected I cant understand or listen any thing I only hear wired noises..
Any fix guys ?
Dont know if its technical or software based issue
The sound quality has been noticeably bad for me using headphones also, bluetooth isn't too much of a problem and works fine.
I just got my headphone jack replaced free from LG (as it was doing the random skipping thing) - I quoted that it was a known problem (i mean look on XDA for all the threads) and as my phone was under warranty, i flashed stock firmware and sent it back - when i got it back in 48 hours it was replaced and working. They even cleaned the screen for me lol.
I don't use a headset, only headphones, and the quality is most noticeable on my sennheiser hd800s, but also on my beyerdynamic headphones. Install Viper audio and it improves slightly.
I got mine replaced today as well.
New phone bingo !!
i feel like when you put on your headphones the sound is just too low.
anyone experiencing this, or is it just me?
I'm using it more on a speaker but it's definitely not as loud as my nexus 6 was
On my Sennheiser MM550X bluetooth headphones I do think I have the volume cranked a couple clicks higher than with my old Galaxy S3. I'm also getting that annoying noise when the G4 is connected to my desk audio system via 1/8" stereo jack. When no audio is playing it bugs me enough I dug my Motorola bluetooth receiver out and am using that instead of the cable at work.
No problems at all.
None. I use Xiaomi Piston 3 in-ears and Sony Bluetooth Xtra Bass 950's over-ears and they both sound fine.
I'm having trouble with BT streaming on my G4 using a HOMESPOT NFC BT receiver and the Google Play music app. No issues with my G3 though. Highs are very distorted, it's almost like BT streaming gain is set very high. Lowering BT audio makes no difference. I tested with other music apps and same issue. I can't find any settings within the device menu options that could correct this. The BT/NFC receiver works fine with other devices so pretty sure it's the G4. Not sure if it's a hardware issue or OS related. Any suggestions?
sound is not nearly as loud over earphones as it was on my Z1
1. No problem with my headphones when I'm hear music. (volume).
2. When i hear radio- big problem - the volume is very very low.
3. The songs not played good. There is lagging sometimes for 1 second . Maybe because i played them from sd card. Very annoying.
No problems with playing music on mine. For some reason it seems to sound just as good through the speaker as my m8 did
Thanks for all the reply guys . Maybe it could just be that i'm using iPhone headphones? which sucks since this is the only phone i've ever gotten that doesn't include headphones when i first brought this phone
Sound seems a bit less crisp than it did on my M8 when connected by BT to headphones or car audio. Also with my mpow BT headphones the first 10 seconds after connecting any music played stutters a lot before settling down. Never had that issue on the M8.

Using iphone garbage might just be ur issue. I use my bose and wired or Bluetooth I get no issues. My lg tones have no issues. Will test my other gym ones tomorrow
Hey there, was waiting for someone else to have that particular problem - almost thought I was the only one...
Is it possible that you are connected to a Pebble or similar smartwatch? Uninstalling the pebble app solved the problem for me, as silly as it sounds^^
The issue also occured with a GS6 btw., (Pebble app installed and connected to the watch)...
I tested several headphones and speakers and found something weired:
Teufel Aureol headphones: Crystal clear sound, no problems
LG G4 Stock In-Ear headphones: Works like a charm
Beats Studio: Bass is a bit to heavy, volume doesn't get as high as on the Teufel or LG G4 stock.
Atomic Darts In Ear: Same as the Beats one
Beats urbeats: Better than the big Beats, but worse than Sennheiser or Teufel
Sennheiser HD 700: Crystal clear sound, FLACs sound like they should, MP3s a bit cracky, but well, compression.
JBL Pulse BT speaker: Extrem volume, beats the **** out of a room.
Creative D200 BT speaker: Bass too heavy, cracking sounds
Bose SoundLink III BT speaker: Sometimes clear sound, sometimes cracky. MP3s worser than FLACs, who thought of this?
Bose SoundLink mini BT speaker: Extreme volume, crystalclear sound. Can't decide if the JBL is better or not, but the SL mini seems slightly better.
I think it depends on the quality and the setting of your headphones/speakers what happens there, since the G4 has a good quality so far when it comes to sound (Integrated speakers do not count.)
I listen to music on mine with PlayerPro and the full band EQ.
Using this combination I really find no difference between the G4, Note Edge, and Galaxy Tab 4.....It might just be me or the fact that the N6 is a beast of an audio device, but that seems to be where people notice the biggest (or only major) difference as far as music goes.
The sound on my device is also very low compared to G3, especially while using Radio FM, any idea?
Anyone tried viper4android?
It did miracles on my ex S6
