Hi
My gnex makes cracking sound when grabbed.
The sound is only coming from the left side about 1.5cm below volume rocker. There is no movement of any parts of the phone just that frigging sound.
Now should I send it for replacement/repair or just live with it? Its £500 phone and something like this happening after a week of usage?

Replace. One week is unacceptable. This phone seems to be having a lot of quality control issues.

Did you try removing and replacing the battery cover? It might not be in properly?
I got mine yesterday and have noticed that the back cover has a bump in it, as if its not sat down correctly,in the same place as the OPs phone, iv taken the back off and back on again so many times to try to get it right!!!... doesn't want to know...not sure if its the cover or the phone....its going back tomorrow...not good for a £500 phone....hopefully I'll get a good one...

I have the same issue. I thought it's just the way it is on this phone, the back cover is really cheap.. I can even see a very small bump on one side.
The problem is that this is happening even without the cover on the phone. I take the cover off from the phone and press on the side of it I can still here cracks. There is so many things I love about this phone, dictation or the screen or the actual size and thinness of the phone. Unfortunately samsung is making their devices from really thin and cheap plastic. Have the same problem on my samsung galaxy tab 10.1 on the back cover. it feels like the back cover is going to come of the device. The only reason I didn't return my galaxy tablet is because I got the free cover with it which means I don't really feel the back.
Unfortunately due to lack of the covers for samsung galaxy nexus I cannot resolve this issue that way which will be satisfactory for me. ps I just said the above text, I love this phone

Bottom left. Left to the "SAMSUNG" logo, where back cover joins with the rest of the body.
EDIT: I've just attached picture of that bump.

Hmm Nothing here. I ran my finger all the way round where the battery cover joins the body and its flush all the way round.
I just removed the battery cover and put it back on, and still couldn't reproduce it. I did notice tho putting the cover back on is not really straight forward. if you're looking at the back of the phone:
- There's two tabs at the bottom of the cover which need to slide in - cover pushed downwards into the body.
- Theres a tab on the right which has to be slid in towards the right.
- There's a tab on the left which has to be slid in downwards.
Trying to do all three at the same time is a bit weird. I find putting the bottom right tab in and he right tab in together, then slightly bend the battery cover to slide the bottom left and left one in. Then push the rest down. If you don't slide the tabs into where they slot in, you can't push them down properly afterwards.
i thought 5 year olds knew how to put battery covers on
it comes off top to bottom, so when you go back to put it on, snap it in bottom to top

Yeah, that bump comes from not putting the back on properly - I've done that once

lol not trying to be patronising! But its not actually as simple as bottom to top, or you'll probably break the tabs!
what I meant is not the actual battery cover, is the frame around a phone that is making a cracking sound and its located roughly about 1.5 centimeters below volume rocker. Basically its normally were you would hold the phone

The bump is definitely due to not putting the cover on properly - I just tried it now. (the left clip needs to be pushed into the phone and then slide downwards to latch on).
But the cracking sounds definitely seem like an issue with your nexus. I just squeezed all the way round the housing, with cover on and off and I dont have any cracking sound at all.
I would send it back for a replacement, who knows it might get worse, or have a broken housing inside.
lol people not putting the back cover on properly.
lol.
hahaha
lol.
Your holding it wrong. LoL
Seriously though that creak would drive me crazy. Its not that heavy so there is no reason to stress the body.
My Transformer will creak if I hold it with one hand while picking it up because of the weight. Perhaps it wasn't sealed properly?

Not sure if you have a specific problem but I have noticed the best way to put the back on in general is to start at the bottom and make sure you click every one on your way to the top.
Geez, I have been fighting with getting the back cover fully attached for an hour. Is there some secret to this?????? There is always 1 clip that will not lock in. Usually the bottom left OR right.
Never had a problem with any other Samsung Plastic backs on 3 other devices!
Bah humbug!
the bottom 4 (2left and 2right) you have to slide in first. if you look at the 2nd ones up from the bottom they're shaped like hooks. so you have you slide them in the press down and the others will click on
it really is more of a hassle than it should be , but working bottom to top on both sides at the same time seems to work for me...
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
I must have messed up one of those cheezy plastic hooks ... just can't get it to lock in. Argggghhh ..... wtf do you expect for $729 anyway! The bottom left side (right at the curve) just won't snap in. UFB!
It gets easier once you get a feel for it. The first two side ones are a pain, but if you push down and inward, it flexes the cover upward a bit and they pop right in.
I can forsee now the need eventually for a new cover when the tabs wear down

This might sound weird.
But I actually like how you have to click it back it. Its fun for me and I keep doing it even though its unnecessary lol

When it eventually looks like it is in and I snap the TOP ones in that bottom LEFT corner pops up and won't lock down. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Ready to throw it through the window.

Yes, sounds weird!
Its defiantly more difficult than the SII was, I found that the first pin on the right is the hardest. I stick the bottom two in then work my way from right to left, and it works ok for my device. It was funny as hell watching the guy in the Bell store struggle with it after putting the battery in, took him almost 5 minutes .
No issues here...

I must have damaged 1 of the bottom clips. F'in ridiculous. Whoever designed this needs to be shot. I have had the phone for 5 hours and have spent the last 2 1/2 trying to get the f'in cover on. I give up. Getting a Diztronic case for it anyway. Had that on my GS2 and really liked it. This is totally absurd.
Just one corner won't go. It looks like it is OK until I snap in the TOP then the bottom left corner at the curve pops up.
GOT IT! That bottom left corner piece of **** tiny clip was bent up. I carefully bent it down and it went in.Unbelievable design. Steve Jobs would turn over in his grave.
Does anyone have to tilt their phone slightly to be centered on the front facing camera? When I have the phone face directly perpendicular to me my face is off-center...debating exchanging it.
You do realize the camera is placed to the side of the front speaker and not in the middle of the phone, right?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Yes.... I do realize that.
The thunderbolt and iphone 4 I had previously used didn't have this issue. and they had an camera off-center to the right of the speaker. Meaning that they probably accounted for it with the placement of the camera sensor.
Mine doesn't show me perfectly straight on, if that's what you want to know, but i never gave it any thought until now so it's barely noticeable and not at all problematic for me. I don't think there's anything wrong with you device, maybe the device in general. But I suggest not giving a f*ck. Works for me.

You do realize that the front of the phone...AKA the glass...is curved right?! It's not flat so of course you have to tilt it.
I read the thread and just had to ask myself...REALLY!!!!????

Actually, like the Nexus S, the Galaxy Nexus, the screen it self is NOT curved. The screen itself is flat... and only the top/bottom edge of the glass is curved, BUT the camera inside it is not curved/pointing down, it's pointing straight, that's why you gotta tilt the phone all weird to get it right.
But either way, yes it's off.
All the Android phones I have with FFC have all been off.. a lot. Nexus S, Sensation 4G, Galaxy Nexus, Asus Transformer tablet. All of them. Some worse than others.
I have a work iPad2 and it's off too. I facetime with my friend and I have to tilt it in a weird angle to get my face to fill up the screen correctly.
It's not that big of an issue but since I hadn't seen the problem on the thunderbolt and iPhone 4 I felt it was an oversight to not account for it on such a high end device.

I bought mine from Bell Canada. So international version I believe it is. anyways...
Vertically: maybe a degree till backwards if I want my face 100% centered vertically.
Horizontally: my head is slightly to the left but the effect is only noticeable if I'm holding the phone so close to my face that people would be looking at nose hairs instead of me. If held out 1.2 - 1.5 feet away from my face (where I usually hold a phone when using it the effect is so slight as to be negligible.
Besides, the slight shaking of my hand (simply from shifting in my chair) hides any discrepancies. I had to test by setting the phone down on the table and looking down on it as if I was holding it in my hand to see anything at all.
I can't say for sure if some of you are experiencing a more drastic shift than I or not, but for having the camera in the upper right hand corner of the phone I don't see anything wrong with how it's taking pictures and video.
O.
So I cracked my screen, I'm getting a new one from Tuscani1821 and I think I've found a couple of good videos to show me the way.
Basically, I don't need help. But I thought I would share due the the way I cracked my screen.
I use an otterbox defender, clipped to my left hand pants pocket, with the top of the phone on the bottom of the case. I do that so the volume buttons are exposed. Another guy came to my job site and I was going to move his truck. I had forgotten that his door doesn't open all the way, another story, so I pulled his door and moved forward expecting to slide in and instead my phone made contact with the edge of the door.
I didn't know anything was wrong because, hey, I use an otterbox. TuneIn kept going, I turned the volume up & down. Took a call with the button on my wired headphones. I only found a problem at lunch when my screen didn't come on. Other than that, it seems to work perfectly.
So, maybe the otterbox kept me from destroying my phone entirely but I had a seidio for 9 months with no problems and I've had the otterbox for maybe 3. I only replaced it because the belt clip broke from the case and couldn't find another.
Still have the seidio if anyone's interested.
The tab doesn't have a macro lens, sorry. The crack on the bottom will be the circular line going to the opposite corner as the rest of the carnage.
I can't believe you'd let such a beautiful baby like that get hurt... :'( I'm glad it's being fixesd though! Definitely easy.
What is wrong with you, letting your phone dangle outside of your pants like that! ?

Gah!! Don't you holler at me!! I forgot to mention that it was facing inward in the case so the back of the phone struck the edge of the door. It just seems weird that nothing else was broken.
Just got the new screen from Tuscani and it works perfectly.:good::crying:
I stepped back to the Transform in the meantime, what a piece of crap, and for a while nearly considered going back to my sanyo clamshell. but I'm addicted to tune-in & talk radio on the job because I work with a bunch of morans.
Good to know your back up and running your Epic.
That must have been some wallop to crack the screen like that from the back. :banghead:

Careful guys. If these devices are that sensative thats insane. Dropped s4 on its bottom right corner onto rug.. no screen damage tho a 5mm piece of the plastic silver bezel lip pealed off. Really f*#!* up..
anyway.. now im getting smearing that makes me feel like im drunk. Stuttering in scrolling, jittering..
dont know what im gonna do but this should be a PSA on its sensitivity.

I 2nd this. Since owning my S4 i have had it fall from my desk about 4 or 5 times onto a linoleum chair mat. About a 2 and a half foot drop each time. The chair mat should be a lot harder then a rug. Theres not a scratch on the thing and no problems at all. Think the OP got a bad unit that got through final inspection.

Agreed, you should be able to drop an egg or a baby a foot and a half onto carpet with no ill effects. If that hadn't happened your phone probably would have gotten messed up at some point from you looking at it too hard or something.
Digitizer seams like a good thought. The screen has also got a yellowish tint now except in tge corner it was dropped on, which remains more vibrant and sharp.
im gonna try n get tmo to swap it out for me since theres no visual damage except lil silver sliver from bezel gone.. thanks for input, much appreciated.

My fiance has already dropped her S4 like 5-6 times from standing height down to the ground. She even dropped it on a bunch of rocks in our driveway...... :-\
However not only does she not have a single scratch... It works perfect still.
Get softer carpet
Get a case, if you're spending so much money on a phone at least spend a few bucks on a case, even a $5 tpu case from ebay can be the difference between a shattered screen
