[Q] OnScreen Capacitive "Soft Keys" - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So i figured out how to add the onscreen softkeys by editing the build.prop and adding
"qemu.hw.mainkeys=0"
at the bottom; however...I have a question, how to you add buttons using a AOKP/AOSP rom? or even using the build.prop? because Im currently using the AOSP Hercules CM10 [JB 4.1.2] ROM and I'm confused...I honestly want to add a "menu" button and also turn off the physical capacitive key lights. if you guys can help...you'd be my hero..

yup I'm using a E4GT, but i figured it out. After you edit build.prop the setting for the navigation bar is there, but now my only question is how do i turn off and disable my capacitive buttons completely and turn the button light off? ive done almost everything and i can't seem to figure it out. I tried editing the "Button" Values and setting them to "0" under settings>display>automatic backlight>use custom>edit other levels, but no luck. I even went to the root folder system>usr>keylayout>sec_touchkey.kl and erased all the text and the result is that they don't vibrate but the menu, back, and search buttons still work...the home button is the only one that doesn't work. I mean it's not a big issue but the light gets annoying and I just want to complete shut off all capacitive physical controls...can you help me out?
using Sprint Samsung Galaxy SII Epic Touch 4G
Rooted with AOKP v. 4.1.2 CM10 [10-20121024-SKANK-epic4gtouch]

In the advanced section of the settings menu there is an option to turn off the cap. button lights. You're on the right track with erasing those values, but you have to reboot afterwards to get it to take effect.
What are you using to edit those values?

Go to system/usr/keylayout/sec_touchkey. Select sec_touchkey and delete the four lines. Reboot and you will be good to go.
Edit: I just read you already did that.. I dunno man that's what works for me.

Sym button issues

I've looked around, but I didn't see anyone else with this "issue."
I'm on AOKP Milestone 5.2 running Nyan Colonel 4.2. I don't know what or when it happened, but the sym button (function set .com) on the hardware keyboard doesn't work as needed. Pressing sym acts as a select type thing where it continually highlights the next selection area (Button or text). And the smiley button doesn't work either, now that I think of it. Everything else seems to work though.

Wow. I'd say I'm disappointed at this dysfunctionality, but it just goes to show how little I use my physical keyboard. Like, never.

Well that sucks. I use that button a lot, mainly for the .com function. Especially when trying out a new rom and logging back into everything. Guess I'll have to type it out from now on. Thanks for the info!

[Q] Turn off backlight keys LED's?

I just want to use the Nav Bar in AOKP, instead of the hardware keys. I figured out how to disable them, I just cant turn off LED. Is there a way to do it, but still let it work for notifications?
Here you are my good fellow. Hope this is what you're looking for

I'm actually already using that, I just want to disable the LEDs back lights of the keys. Its some kind of built in galaxy s tool in aokp jb!

Change the custom Backlight settings in display to have 2 settings one on all 0 and one at 100 and then put it into auto bright and lock phone till deep sleep and turn on and there you go

oh i was completely confused by your thread. But in aokp i believe you have to create a shortcut to it on your home screen. In CM10 its under advanced in the settings menu.
Sorry i cant remember, i dont use aokp.
In AOKP JB, the easiest option is to go to settings, device options, sensors, and uncheck "enable keys backlight."

Disabling the hardware menu and back button.

Is it possible to disable the menu and back button and install software key buttons like the nexus?

I just turned off the lights so I can't see them. And with AOKP or paranoid android they have the option for soft keys. Its nice because you can add a search key. I really missed that.

Yeah I've had the evo, the evo 3d and the epic 4g touch... They have always had the search key, was pissed that all the new phones have gone away from it

If you edit the key layout after applying the on-screen 'buttons', you should be able to disable them.
I'm running the LIH leak with the navigation buttons.

[Q] Is it possible to turn off capacitive button lights? [Solved]

It bothers me when I'm playing games on the phone and the bottom lights come up all the time. Is there an app that can turn the lights off for me?
Or is there a tasker program that will allow me to turn it off? Any help is appreciated!

If you are on cm10 then settings and device options and sensors and back light de-check the box.

On the other hand is it possible to keep the capactive buttons on the whole time as long as the phone is on?

You mean permanent?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Yes there are settings for it that keep them on shorter or longer. My wife's relay uses this same setting to control the backlight on the slider keypad as well!
Look in DISPLAY and see if there is "touch key light duration" I have stock rom (actually wicked, based on stock) and I have 1.5 (default), 6, off, on as the 4 choices.
Yea permanent as long as the screen is on though! Thanks for replying man but I'm on CM10 that rom has a slightly different configuration.

No don't think so. Might be an app for it or mod with in the forums, maybe elesbb can jump in, he knows how to write code for such a thing I think.

Replaced cracked s3 screen, back and menu button messed up. What are my options?

Hey all, I messed up my menu and back button when replacing the screen. I am currently running cm10 nightly and was looking to either enable onscreen nav bar or figure out how to fix this.
Any help on this matter would be awesome...
thanks!
Cheapest would be to enable on screen nav buttons or pie.

Put this line into your build prop located in system folder.
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
This will activate the on screen button and show menu button when needed.
