On my Galaxy Note 2, if I display a pure black screen in a completely dark room, I can see that first of all, the "black" is not really black, but somewhat pinkish. And second of all, there are "really black" dots and lines across what is supposed to be "pure black" but is somewhat pinkish (like i said). Also, this effect, of having a darker line, can also been seen with say, dark blue on screen in a completely dark room.
This effect is not noticeable when white or other colours are on screen. I'm really sorry but I can't show you a picture of this because obviously a screenshot captures the digital signal and not the physical output and I don't have a good enough camera to take pictures of what I'm saying in complete darkness.
Is this a defect or just an unavoidable "feature" of Samung AMOLED screens?
you did not use the search function: i personally wrote a huge amount of posts regarding this, also in the note1 section!
search for "black blotches" or take a look at my posts. really lots of them are about this!
in short:
its manufacturing dependant and its luck of the draw to get a "good" screen!
samsung lives with this as not many customers complain(ed) about it, as most of them do not even notice it!

Mine is pure back at full brightness when seen in a dark room (no pinkish hue or any line that you mention). And Note 2 screen doesn't even have the infamous black clipping/crushing issue like its predecessors! Blue colour also good, no issues for me.
No, it is definitely not an AMOLED feature or drawback (never seen it on any other AMOLEDs either)! Of all other aspects samsung SAMOLED screens are known to have the deepest blacks (with best contrast ratio). Sure, it sounds like you have a defective screen, and my suggestion would be to get it checked up at SC for replacement.
i also have a similar issue on my note 2. a black screen is not completely black, but a brownish black. And i can see 3 (or more) dots which are completely black.. i can see this only in a dark room, so normally this is not an issue. But when i read kindle in my bed with dark background, this really bothers me. initially i thought this was some smudge on the screen. im sad to hear that other people are also having this issue..
I had the black dots on my galaxy s2 ... but not my note ... The screen on my note has none of that sooooooo happy about that it really is just luck of the draw ....

Same issue here. But it does not bother me that much, and if I get it replaced, the next one might have worse issues.

im only worried if it will grow in time. like a dead pixel in an LCD screen, if this phenomenon spreads to the neighboring pixels over time, then its a very bad thing... otherwise, i am not bothered at all..
We need this thread each time there is a new phone which amoled screen? ..
The sgs2 has this as well as the sgs3 the note 1 etc.
it's not a defect, it's a limitation of amoled screen production.

Sorry, what you say here its not possible! EVERY amoled 'suffers' from this ('cause it CANNOT display 100% blacks, due to it's active matrix)! If you won't see it it's because of a wrong method or your eyes!

Has anyone else noticed that the ET4G's screen isn't that great when it comes to the color white?
When compared to my Evo4G,
pictures and video - ET4G wins - main colors are "colors"
websites with white backgrounds, pdfs etc - Evo4G wins
To me it looks like the white just isn't as bright, kind of like how the Evo's black isn't as black as the ET4G's black... if that makes any sense.
Is it just my eyes or my device?

Par for the course on SAMOLED screens. On SAMOLED vs. LCD, blacks are better but whites are worse, generally speaking.
I only notice it with my brightness turned down. Looks better at dull brightness (of course)

That is kinda a thing, yes. Though I have seen some very abused (S)AMOLED(+) screens and a couple unlucky new ones where the white isn't white and just sucks. That's what you call a bad screen.
the "O" in SAMOLED+ stands for "organic" and over time these organics do degrade faster than your average LCD. They have a type of compensation built into the circuitry to accommodate for this, but, in the limited amount of time most people have a phone they shouldn't notice it...though there are also bad screens that deteriorate rapidly and some that even burn in.
So, yes, AMOLED technology isn't known for having the whitest whites but they should still be bright white, if not you may either have a bad screen or a fantastic eye....hope for a bad screen cuz you can replace that, but a very good eye for these things may drive you fncking crazy.
samoled screens are like that.... yellowish tint for whites but the blacks are BLACK.

The whites are fine. I believe your eyes are playing tricks on you. The blacks being so deep give it somewhat a darker tint to the whites, but in truth, it's there.
The whites are good on the SAMOLED+ screens. Just because they a brighter on another screen doesn't mean anything. Personally, super strong white would bug my eyes after a while.
I have a 'Mel Gibson' type "Conspiracy Theory" about this whole issue....
I think that Samsung, though they use exactly the same sourcecode as all the other manufacturers, might simply insert a piece of code that inverts the colors that they want, at a certain time.
For example:
Every other phone on the planet has no problem producing a vibrant "white" color....
Every other phone on the planet has a REAL problem producing a vibrant "black" color.
Samsung basically 'flip-flops" this, and I wonder if it's not just a well-placed piece of "inversion" code....
The results would be incredible blacks, and so-so whites...
Does anyone understand what I'm getting at, and care to comment?
<<This space for rent>>
Sht I thought that I was only one on xda that has yellow tint problem.
Its not just our Epics, tmobile gs2 and nexus prime have same problem.
And no-they are not supposed to be like that!
I looked at epic touch at sprint store and their epic was cool temperature white not like mine which is straight yellowish-orange.
I bought mine on amazon and im on my second return. My second phone was litle better but still orange-yellow compared to one at sprint store or my old Epic 1.
To sum this up:
Whoever has yellow tint on their epic touch or other galaxy s2 variants-they have defective phone. And its gonna get worse because in amoled screens blue colors deteriorate quicker than reast,so if your phone is yellowish now it will be red in a year or two, lol.
Its better to get a phone with bluish tint because overtime it will go away, while yellow will only get worse.

What's the contrast ratio of our phones? I did a search but all that was said is that "it's high", didn't give exact numbers.
That being said is there a color calibration app, much like one's for tv's & pc monitors, that can be used on our smartphones?

Yeah there is an app in market check my other thread for the name.It want fix yellow tint issue but will make it better.
Hi all,
Has anybody else noticed a yellowish tint to their screen, especially when displaying lighter colours, white, light blue etc?
This only seems to be the case when looking directly at the screen. If I look at it from any sort of angle the yellow tint is not there.
Any info or confirmation that others are experiencing this too would be much appreciated. If this is a hardware issue then I will return my phone.
Thanks all

I have not noticed any yellow screen in the settings menu myself.
I have been reading that the Galaxy SII had similar yellow tint problems when released and that it was corrected with a software fix?
I'm more worried that this isn't a hardware fault more than anything, software faults don't worry me too much as I'm happy to wait for a fix...comes with the territory when owning a smartphone
Think I will be returning my handset, the yellow tint combined with the volume problem is doing my head in!
I have been watching a few you tube clips and i don't see much yellowish tint on theirs but then again it does go completely black in the app drawer.
It really doesnt faze me as much as the volume issue though.
is it a problem or a feature?
I don't really know what to say, but let me give you my 2 cents.
First, AMOLED screens are all different for some reason, and I can vouch for this as I replaced my Nexus one 9 times for power button and various other issues, and each time the color temperature was different. Some were warmer (with a red tint) while others were cooler (blue tint). If you swap it, you might get a better tint, maybe even white if you're lucky.
Second, the Nexus S also had a tint problem (yellow tint) just like yours. The two display models at my BestBuy both are VERY YELLOW compared to my HTC Sensation and look really bad, but it might be because their screens were ruined from being on for so long. There was a post on XDA in the Nexus S forums who said he swapped until he got a "white tint" but then Google actually updated the Nexus S with different Color Settings and totally washed out his screen, while yellow tinted ones actually got better. If Google releases a color patch, you might not like it, but I don't think they will after the backlash from the Nexus S one.
tl;dr Get it swapped, it's a hardware issue. Swap until you get one you like, you paid for it, you deserve it.
Oh geez here go again, i thought the yellow tint was going to die with the galaxy s ii, guess not, it's alive again on the galaxy nexus , i swapped my galaxy s ii because the yellow tint was too distracting, in low "backlight" the white looked yellow , the one i got is less yellow but the colors dont pop as much as on the first galaxys ii i had

You're going to want LCD if you want perfection, but you'll give up great blacks and thinness+battery life, not to mention the phone entirely.
Keep swapping, took my 9 tries but it was worth it for my Nexus One

I've got the same 'issue'. While I understand it is a feature, it really looks odd/very greyish, especially on auto brightness.

The Galaxy Nexus screen looks so yellow compared to iPhone 4S display
It looks like he has auto-brightness enabled on the Galaxy Nexus.. it looks yellower unless you turn up the brightness.
The whites on the iPhone 4 are ridiculously clean and white, no phone compares to it. The blacks on the Nexus are also ridiculous and no phone (except other Super AMOLED phones) compare to it.
Take your pick, better whites, better blacks. The iPhone screen is still tops, but it's small. I have an iPhone 4 and a Nexus (just sold a GS2).
If I compare the screens side by side, then yeah, the utter blinding white of the iPhone 4 makes the Nexus white look kind of eggshell white, just not as bright or crisp. But using the Nexus on it's own and it's fine, white looks white enough when not being compared to the iPhone. The colors on the nexus are much more vivid and true to life than on the iPhone.
Nexus also has crisper text than on the iPhone 4 believe it or not. There is no perfect screen, all have +'s and -'s, you just have to pick which +'s you like best. For me it was the insane resolution, size and color accuracy of the Nexus. It's plenty bright, just not plenty white when compared to the ifruit.

iPhone doesn't have Roboto
definately noticed the yellow tinge... bloody Samsung!
actually the yellow issue on the GN appears to be because of the colour profiles that have been set in a similar way to how google updated the nexus S and altered the colors.
in AMOLED screens overtime the colours actually fade and become less vibrant now blue usually goes first and is at a much faster rate than the other colours.
considering that this fading occurs perhaps they deliberatly make the colours a bit 'warmer' to offset the blue fade time.
this was also interesting:
"Color balance issues
Additionally, as the OLED material used to produce blue light degrades significantly more rapidly than the materials that produce other colors, blue light output will decrease relative to the other colors of light. This variation in the differential color output will change the color balance of the display and is much more noticeable than a decrease in overall luminance.[63] This can be partially avoided by adjusting colour balance but this may require advanced control circuits and interaction with the user, which is unacceptable for some users. In order to delay the problem, manufacturers bias the colour balance towards blue so that the display initially has an artificially blue tint, leading to complaints of artificial-looking, over-saturated colors. More commonly, though, manufacturers optimize the size of the R, G and B subpixels to reduce the current density through the subpixel in order to equalize lifetime at full luminance. For example, a blue subpixel may be 100% larger than the green subpixel. The red subpixel may be 10% smaller than the green."
its quite possible that the tints that are experienced on oled devices are probably deliberate to offset the problems with oled technology.

That's nothing to do with the Pentile Matrix! Definitely a defective screen, return it to the store and ask for a warranty replacement. The 'banding' is more to do with the AMOLED screen technology rather than the Pentile, as it was present on my SGS2, but is generally only visible under certain conditions (background colour/brightness).
Regards.
Is it visible on colors other than grey?
Sure, on blue background too, sometimes on white.(poarws photo with blue background) It depends on brightness.
More visible at white background with high brightnes.
More visible at blue and grey background with lower brightnes.
It does have to do with the Amoled technology, but I doubt it's a defective display. You can try to exchange it to see if it really is defective or not.
I have some vertical and horizontal banding only with lowest brightness at the white background.
With maximum brightness no lines or whatever
AMOLED has a few imperfections here and there, so it's not surprising. But if it's bothering you too much exchange it for another one, it could have less prevalent issues.

Try viewing those shades of grey on your phones, it's usually the most problematic color. Use a low brightness setting (around 25%) at a dim environment.
This exists on all OLED screens. Its the exact same on my Nexus S. It has nothing to do with pentile matrix, but OLED.

Yes i had nexus one galaxy s galaxy s II so i can compare, nothing like that before that.
50-60 percent of brightnes
I have the Galaxy Note and it has the same panel as the Galaxy Nexus albeit at 1280x800 instead of the Nexus's 1280x720. (Super AMOLED HD with Pentile sub-pixel arrangement)
My screen is great. The whites are brighter than they were on the Nexus. The Nexus displayed whites with a yellowish tint especially on low brightness. Plus I can't seen any banding on the screen and I have tested it on White, Red, Blue, Green and Grey backgrounds.
Im getting a new Galaxy Nexus in a couple of days. Since this unit is from a later batch I hope that there is no banding on the screen too.
Funny, I have a similar issue to Delarock's on my Galaxy S2, manufacturing date is 19th of October. I'm still thinking whether to replace it or not since since it's only visible on dark'ish grey, I couldn't replicate it on lighter greys, white, or any other color at various brightness settings.

Really similar to the screen on my new Galaxy Nexus. I didnt notice the diagonal right away but that is certainly more significant. My screen a rosy hue in the bottom half and especially the lower left.
I'd love to see a similar picture of someone who says that their screen doesn't have it.

So are some of these screens defective? Or is it really just the nature of the beast?
How does one tell what manufacturing date their device was made to? Would I be able to go to a store and exchange for a datecode that shows no banding issues?
I am having the same issue ... another thing I notice is weird issues with the camera while in a dark room. If I have my camera on in a low light room, I get this weird "dancing" of black blotches in the really dark areas of that room.
I like all solid black wall paper, I find the fastest easiest way to get it is to turn off the camera flash, put my finger over the lense and take a pic. Worked for every other phone I have but the GNex. I get a weird blotchy image ... now I am on GNex#3 (other 2 I returned for different issues) and I have noticed this camera thing on #1 and now #3. With the first one I assumed this was normal ... but after going from the second one to the third I see a HUGE difference in screens. With phone #2 I was able to do the phone/black wallpaper with no weird distortion. Now the really strange thing is that that same pic taken with the second phone (that displyed pure black on that device) shows up blotchy on device 3.
Hope this makes sense to someone lol cuz reading it back I sound crazy.
I just hope the folks at the Verizon store don't give me a hard time trying to get another one!
Hi all. Few days ago, i've made a pure black image on my PC and set it as wallpaper on my Gnex. But when i view that photo in gallery (in full screen mod) i realize that screen is not 100% black, it's super strong gray but not black. I'm confuse that the screen is really Super AMOLED or a kind of LCD?
Its superamoled

Although its true that in theory there would be no backlight for an OLED screen, there is still a small amount of current that goes through just below the threshold of on/off for no lag when going from black to something else. Unfortunatly, the tjreshold will not be common for every led, so some leds will be lit. Thats what produces the small backlight even when displaying true black
Its super amoled (or amoled HD or whatever they call it) and is able to produce true black.
Xda dark theme shows no color difference between it and the nav buttons on the bottom.

There is no difference because the soft buttons are part of the display. Turn off the lights and you will see the entire 4.65" display glow a dark grey. It's a bit of a disappointment actually, I have a Samsung focus and galaxy S2 and the displays are BLACK. Side by side you can definitely see the difference, in the dark I cannot even find my Focus, the nexus on the other hand glows bright enough to notice.
You guys need to remember also that this is a PENTILE display, in order to get the 720P res, Samsung went with a pentile display. There is a big difference between the Super AMOLED displays on the other samsung devices and the nexus. The not really pure black blacks is one of the cons of the nexus' pentile display along with a slight yellow hue, viewing angle and a few others covered in many online articles.
Don't get me wrong, the display is still very beautifull in comparioson to most other phones. The resolution is amazing, I played a 4.2GB MKV of Avatar with MX player and it played flawlessly and the full screen (4.65") video was gigantic and absolutely crisp. But it's still not the AMOLED that Samsung customers are used to seeing.
so pentile or not if it displays black all led is turned off and thus dark no?
i understand pentile may affect other color reproduction but true black must be true black coz led is turned off right?
my previous phones were a gs2 and vibrant, blacks are blacks on all of them including this gnex

It's a PenTile Super AMOLED screen. This is as opposed to the Galaxy S II and Droid Charge which use Super AMOLED+ screens-- which use the traditional RGB stripe sub-pixel arrangement.
Looking at the button bar in the dark on my gnex, I can safely say mine is true black.

No. Like the guy before said, there need to be still a low current on the display so that there would be no lag when switching from black to other colors because it takes longer to switch on the display than changing the color.

For some reason these new HD amoled screens aren't showing total black like previous amoled screens. There are already threads we talked about theorizing why this is. Put next to the nexus one or galaxy s and its not as black. Perhaps its due to higher pixel density, or maybe a change in the technology. But you're not alone, just have to live with it.

It's more of saving battery. When it's pure dark, the individual OLED's are almost completely turned off. I say almost because some current still runs through it but nothing like what an LCD would.
And it's better for contrast?

Higher resolution will most likely result in more possible backlight from true black. (Because of the greater amount of leds being over the threshold)
And i cant says my screen is totally absent of any light, but it is damn friggen close.
Any AMOLED screen will beat the crap out of LCDs. The contrast is an order of magnitude higher thanks to the screen generating its own light, thus being able to shut down fully (or almost fully) to provide no light.
Why do you complain that there is a minuscule amount of current going through the current with a barely noticeable in pitch black amount of light being emitted, when any other screen will be VERY noticeable at night when displaying black?! This phone's screen is amazing. Yes, it's not perfect, but it's better than most (all?) other phones' screens out there. You know, screw that, this thing is probably SEVERAL THOUSAND TIMES BETTER THAN THE MONITOR YOU ARE CURRENTLY STARING AT.
First time user of AMOLED screen and I can't help but notice a significant green hue shift when viewing the screen at an angle. Is this normal with AMOLED displays?
I'm coming from using an IPS screen and I've heard so many praises for the screen on the note 7 that it seemed strange that the viewing angles had this huge hue shift. Reds become orange even at a 15° angle
Looks like this is more common issue among Samsung phones as of lately.
Just switched to a NOTE 4 from a G3 with a perfect screen.
This screen tint issue even on the slightest angle is kind of annoying.
Also saw my wife's friend's S7 a few min ago...she has the same problem with her phone as well.
I guess this is considered normal.
How does my G3 have better viewing angles vs the Note 4?!
That was the first impression of this phone

Depending on the screen they use, it could have a green or pink hue when looking at it at an angle. This has been the case with Samsung since s3. I used to be that picky and would return it just to end up with either the same or one with pinkish hue. After note 4 I just accepted it.

I see, I guess I'll have to just get used to it. It's even more drastic when I use the blue light filter, my whites change from 3000k to 5000k at the slightest of angles LOL
I'm surprised that people don't mention it in their reviews if it's a prevalent thing with AMOLED displays.
Its a common 'issue' amongs OLED panels but you can compare maybe 3-5 of the same phone and have a different hue at the same angle.
