How to change Jelly Bean phone app? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I wanna see little letters in contact list, so when I click on the letter, it brings all contacts which start with that letter. How to do that? Its weird that this feature is missing in all cm10 based roms

Well its open source... If you want it, go make it. There are libraries that will let you do what you want. You can see an example of it in the Android UI Patterns app on Play

Thank you, unfortunately I dont have any skills in coding, all I can do at this point is flash roms and install apk's

Anybody else?

Have you played around with the T9 settings?

New Fusion!ROM R1 [Friday, May 14, 2010]

GSM HERO ONLY
What is it? Fusion!ROM is the idea of Fusing an HTC ROM with a AOSP ROM... it is based on a HTC port stripped down to resemble a AOSP ROM and is clean, very stable, and functional. This is not a Sense ROM
NO DONATIONS! FREE FREE FREE
Benefits...
Looks and feels like a AOSP ROM but with less bugs and more stability, more stuff really working with good speeds and no random reboots.
AOSP Camera always working at 5MP without random corruption, video too.
AOSP Keyboard has a background.
Gallery 3D is really working not just reloading itself when you rotate your phone.
Includes all stock AOSP apps. with the exception of the "in-call" dialler functions.
A2SD Working if you have a partition set.
Superuser permissions
No JIT = more stability I will test a JIT flavor soon.
The catch... some HTC stuff remain hidden because they are required by the frameworks.
The status bar is black because the HTC frameworks have been compiled with white fonts. Maybe some HEX editing can fix this.
When using the search feature the graphics are a little off by a few pixels but everything works 100% maybe I can fix this.
You need to complete the HTC setup wizard if you want USB disk mounting to work... I recommend skipping to the finish and then setting up your mail and other accounts after.
The Dialler is AOSP but the "in call" keypad is HTC I have not found a way to replace Phone.apk with the stock AOSP one.
All settings work but the Personalize functions are removed so they will cause a force close if you try and use them.
Animations are disabled by default... just enable them.
Using the HTC Lockscreen for now... the AOSP one has no background.
HTC Contacts and Call log remain in launcher "all apps" and are required for syncing to work but you don't have to use them at all and they won't show there ugly faces, just make sure you pick AOSP Contacts as your default when prompted.
Things to test...
Multi-language stuff... do locals work?
Google sync works but is it also possible to sync your contacts and calendar using HTC sync?
Internet tether is untested please report.
Feel free to report any bugs that affect your Android experience I'll do what I can to help.
Camera Greenish color? I get different results if I leave the white balance set to auto in various lighting and I think that is normal.
A full wipe is recommended...if you are coming from a different ROM.

I think he was asking in terms of, is this based on a stock CDMA Rom or Modded CDMA Rom.
I thought I'd add CDMA part on there before someone starts trying to tell me there isn't a stock 2.1 rom for the hero yet....

If you are talking about Villain, you should stop a minute to think...
They ask for donations only, all the ROM´s eventually are avayable for free, they work hard to have every single port out there avayable for us,they have OTA that needs a server...
I havent donated as i dont do web transactions(got burned once) but i think its nice of them to have goodies for people that made donations and helps them...They could work on the ROM´s just for them, and we wouldnt have half the ROM´s we have nowadays(most of them are based in Villains builds)
So if you feel left out because others are using a ROM already and you dont,donate...they deserve it

editing touchwiz lock screen

is there a way to edit it? This must have been asked a million times, but i don't mean with widget locker or lockbot or something like that. I find the clock tacky, since the notification bar is right there and i want to remove it. i'd imagine it would require rooting. thanks
yes
yes requires rooting because you would have to modify a theme zip like a stock theme then modify the .PNG then flash ....atleast thats the only way i know about it
You need to be rooted and running a deodexed rom. You then would have to do some xml edits to remove the clock

ok thanks guys. while i've rooted before, my epic still has the new phone smell and i'm still babying it. but could you help with this? is there a locking app that either:
1. overwrites that xml file or w.e. so that it is not active at the same time. (so they aren't fighting for domination?)
2. keeps the functionality of being able to swipe to missed texts, calls, e.t.c.
thanks.

Those two are pretty much it as far as lockscreens that work on the epic. You can get the rotary lockscreen if you use the cm6 beta, which I have found to be quite stable. Other than that you are going to need an app rather than a flashable zip.

I would recommend GOTO. Its in the market. Its a paid app, but as you unlock you can choose between messages, phone and gmail. You can change which apps it opens if you don't use the stock programs. I have been using it for a month or so. Just make sure you run through the setup twice to make sure the settings are set correctly. Initial setup is kind of tricky i though. Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.

MMS is fine. I haven't tried GPS, but the compass displays backwards in Maps like CM7. Navigation should still work like it does in CM7.
Oh, and MMS works on wifi as well.
Tried it out..good stuff but I decided to go back to cm7.

The only serious issue I'm having with this ROM is the dialer. Usually when I type the first few letters of someone's name, it pops up. On this dialer, all I get is numbers. Am I missing a setting/option somewhere to change this?

I don' recall AOSP dialer ever doing that, but I could be wrong. To view contacts you just select the contacts tab. I know the Sense dialer does that.
I've been running this ROM for a couple days now, it's great. The only bug I've found is the normal reversed compass orientation, which is a bit annoying but doesn't effect driving navigation at all.
Other than that, everything else (MMS, etc) is working fine. For users wondering what it's like, think CM7 running LauncherPro instead of ADW, and you're pretty close.

Sounds to me like you're used to using the Sense dialer. I don't think the stock AOSP dialer does that.
I replaced the default dialer with "DialerOne", which is free on the market. Take a look if you like this ROM but want to maintain your Sense dialer functionality.

It's not a feature in ICS, if you don't want a custom ROM you're out of luck.
That said, I'm not sure I see the value of it. What do you use it for?

I also no longer see the value considering the specs of this phone.
I tried to Custom ROMs - AOKP and SLIM ICS. And both ROMs have customizable Navigation buttons. You can set Kill App function on any Nav button (short press or long press).
I use that feature very much.
If I won't be playing a game, I just kill it.
I believe this same battery a little and doesn't require much effort.
try using conservative governor, it gave me much more battery time on my nexus since it spends more time at lower clock than the standard ondemand and interactive governor

I am also looking for ... have you seen a little app/ script which implements this feature on a rooted ICS mobile phone?

i also want that feature, as there are more and more games, that keep running in the background and come up with "sales-notification", "reminder to play" or whatever...to avoid this, i always need to go into apps-settings and kill them after playing, otherwise i get these annoying notifications... :-\
CM9 have that feature too. I do see the point of having it if you use some apps that will wakelock your phone (i.e. Facebook), and the only way to fix it is to kill the app (hold back is quicker then going into recent apps and swipe it away).
Either you use a custom rom, or you don't get it. End of story.

why do so many people think, that swiping apps out of the recent apps list does stop them from running? they are just taken out of the list, but if they are still running, they still do after swiping them away, no matter if shown in the list or not!
try it with one. check if it's running, take it out of recents list and check again...

why? - what developers of custom roms can do, also developers of a single kill-back-button-app/ script can do for rooted phones ... I don't want to use Cyanogen only for that feature/ reason.

That's a very useful and helpful answer.
Anything you can get in a custom ROM, you can have in a stock ROM. It just takes someone to implement it. If no one has implemented it yet, assuming there is enough interest, someone will...
I have kanged it before into stock, built from src.

The changes are in PhoneWindowManager.smali/.java. I've been trying to add it to my stock IMM76K ROM, but xda search being down isn't helping. If anything, I'll compile AOSP with and with out the change to find exactly what changes need to be made in the .smali file.

You can only have this option on AOKP / GUMMY and non-official rom porting by aokp.
The best rom i use is gummy, AOKP got some problem with connection...
And gummy has good tweaks that doesn't have aokp, and aokp has very great stuff that gummy doesnt have...
But gummy is very stable on the connection.

[Q] Dialer difference between CM9 and sense ?

Hi,
I have Htc one x, and recently changed to CM9, but I am missing the dialer search function that was in sense !
for example: if I have a contact with name as "Mr Johan roman" I can find it by typing in the dialer in sense "m" then "o" then "man" , it will appear in the list of results, but in CM9 it won't.
When I search using CM9 dialer, I can only search by typing the first letters only, I can't search using middle letters or so , is there any fix or a setting in CM9 to give me the same behavior in searching as sense ?
Thanks for help.

I think its a sense exclusive feature and as far as I know there is no such setting in cm9. I don't think there is a fix for that, maybe if we could use the phone dailer apk from sense, but I think its dependent from Rosie(sense launcher).

I'm going to try Renovate now. Seems like he kept some sense parts. Once my download finishes I will try and install the dailer. Hopefully it will work. Will report back then. I'm currently using AOKP 1.1 and miss the camera and gaming.
Here is the link to that rom if you're interested.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705334
I just tested that rom in previous post. It does have the sense dailer with other launcher, think it's a nova one. You still have all the nice goodies without sense launcher, but all other(well most of them) sense stuff also present, Lockscreen, camera, setup ect.
I checked it , it looks good, but the need to unlock before call answering is a nasty bug, I will wait until this is fixed.
