I don't how you are treating your phone, but I have had mine for almost a year and I only have one scratch. I use no protector and I'm pretty rough on mine. GG is not scratch proof, just more resistant than normal hardened glass

Yup, had mine for almost a year with no case or screen protector. I'm an auto mechanic so I'm not too delicate with my phones. This one has lasted me longer than any other phone before. No scratches and only a few corner dings.

As far a i have heard it is gorilla glass. Folks, gorilla glass will scratch if u put it in your pocket or purse with keys and other hard objects. Everybody thinks it is indestructible but it isn't. I never use screen protectors and always have my phone in my pocket by itself. Used phones that way for a years and maybe one or to very small scratches ever came of it
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app

This will be forever debated. If you call sprint they will tell you this unit does not have gorilla glass but there are a bagillion other sources that say it does but who knows. It doesn't matter anyway. I don't use a case or screen protector and my screen is still near perfect. I like the feel of the bare phone in my hand without a big ugly case.

Gorilla glass scratches?

So I have some micro scratches on my screen and Idk from what. They are only in my jeans pocket can denim scratch gorilla glass?
Anyway regardless its getting scratched so I was wondering if anyone can recommend a screen protector that feels like it's not even there? I have had invisible shield and the cheap plastic ones on ebay and I didn't really like either of them. Thanks!

As mentioned in previous threads, sand can scratch the glass. Even small granules in the pockets can do it.
For a screen protector, I can definitely recommend the steinheil ultra crystal. It comes in a pack of two and is durable and doesn't affect the screen's clarity.

Well I have never put anything sandy in my pocket I don't think lol. So does dust qualify as sand? I will check out that screen protector. Thanks for your reply.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Well, it only takes one small grain of sand to make a scratch. It could end up in your pocket without you ever knowing it. You could even have a tiny grain of sand stuck to your finger and not know it. Touch the screen with it and you now have a scratch.
Some dust is made of tiny particles of sand, so yes, dust could potentially scratch your screen.

Lol. When you put it like that gorilla glass doesn't sound so tough anymore haha.

It's not really that it isn't tough. It's scratch RESISTANT glass, not scratch PROOF. It's all about the hardness of the material. You can find videos on Youtube of people trying to scratch Gorilla Glass with things like keys and razor blades. These materials won't scratch it because the glass is harder than them. Sand is harder than Gorilla Glass, so it will scratch.

caaznkid, do you wear an ear ring? Mine has micro scratches from it.
Every one says sand but I scratched mine with salt much more common

No denim can't scratch it, but your keys can. Also the little metal rivets a lot of jeans use at the pockets will too as you're taking your phone in and out of your pocket.
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=does+gorilla+glass+scratch
BTW, Samsung nor Sprint ever said it's impossible to scratch. Also, running off with the line about how you'll sue them because YOU dropped YOUR phone shows you age and overall maturity.

To use screen protector or not???

So I'm debating on whether or not I should use a screen protector on my S3. With the new gorilla glass is it necessary?
What are all of you doing??
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I think it's personal preference I bought a screen protector and I am using mine. It depends how well you take care of your phone. Get a cheap one off of amazon or eBay and see if you like it
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
i take care of my phones so i will not be using a protector. I never have. I took my X2 to the extremes once i activated my s3 and it was difficult to actually scratch the screen.
hoping this holds up equally well. I did by a sleeve for the phone though.
At first I didn't plan on using one, but I did end up trying a wet apply protector and I'm liking it ok. The Gorilla glass seems pretty resilient, and there are videos on youtube of people taking keys, razors, knives etc to the screen with no scratches but the last thing you want is a scratched up display.
Come on guys, there has been threads about this

I have a My Touch 4G Slide. I hate the long name.
I have been using it for over a year now and it has a few very slight scratches. It has Gorilla Glass.
Now about the videos on YouTube: They all use metal that is not so sharp. I would like to see how the glass stands up to a single grain of sand, dirt or rock fragment.
I'm a mechanic and work in a rough environment. I get dirt and grease on it all the time but I don't purposely scratch it.
My 4G was a replacement for the G2 I had for almost a year before and did use a Zagg and it got dirty within a month and the free replacements for life cost $6 to ship them.
I'll have my S3 this week and don't plan to use a protector. I don't think that a screen protector can save it from a direct hit. Since the majority of the surface is non screen, I am considering a case to spread out the impact damage if I drop it, which is more likely to break the screen.
My opinion is non scientific and is from limited experience.
The Verizon guy installed one for me and its working fine. I wasn't gonna put one on but I do like it.

I think there are many debait about this, it's up to you, and as said many times gorilla glass is not future proof it will get scratched easily, forget about keys and coins, just get some sand and try it out.
There has been some discussion on this. There are also some threads about individual screen protectors. Look here.

No, it cracked from about a 6 inch slide. That's the worst part about it. There's not a single mark on my phone because it was in a case when it happened. I called Samsung and they have to evaluate whether the damage was caused by me or some sort of manufacturing defect. I'm almost positive they're gonna rule against me despite how ridiculous the circumstances were.

It was just some plastic case that Target (ironically) had on clearance. I kinda regret that decision...
It mostly depend on the point of impact. If you dropped it directly at it's corner, it'll most likely crack. And I feel the screen on this phone cracks way too easily. I've dropped it once on my bed. Luckily the screen didn't crack.
I have minor scratches on my screen from I have no clue what, I've had a case on it since day one and never lay my phone on its front only on the back and it has minor but noticeable scratches. Annoying and very weak GG

Same here. I don't like screen protectors. I've had this phone 7-12 months now and while my silver rim has scuffs on it, my screen is immaculate. No hairline scratches. It's absolutely mint. I have an OCD with my device screens though. There's always an LCD screen cleaner and microfiber cloth within arms reach of me. I really, really hate dirty mucked up screens lol

Yea my silver part is wearing down a little from the case I'm using. I've been debating not using a screen protector. I have one left, i just get tired of them scratching up and dulling the screen. I've had my Hercules without a protector for near a year. The screen is pristine, no scratches! I love the glass used on this phone. It can get oily but nothing a microfiber cloth can't wipe clean.
I've had the phone since February with no screen protector. Finally dropped it 2 weeks ago, went skidding face down about 3 feet across an asphalt lot. The bezel is scratched up pretty good, but the glass has no scratches at all.
I generally don't use a screen protector but with this phone I decided to. My HTC Glacier I didn't use one and after a year it had no scratches. The reason I did use one with this phone is to retain its value so I can resell and get a better phone when I get sick of it.
Sand scratches the glass so don't think its 100% safe to go without one.
I just put my last screen protector on here. I got a hair scratch down where the hardware keys are. I used to use those cut to fit ones and they would never cover those buttons. Now the one I have is fitted. I probably won't buy any more

Warning about Zagg (and screen protectors in general) on Galaxy S3

Removed my zagg protector today and noticed the glue from the shield completely took off the oleophobic coating. Now the glass isn't as smooth and attracts fingerprints even more. Just a warning to those putting on a screen protector, you may actually be damaging the phone.

I use self laminating sheets from Office Max. I Cut to fit and apply. Easy to remove too. They last maybe two weeks, but they do give some protection to the screen and it's super inexpensive since you get so many sheets to a box. They look just fine. I don't think they cling hard enough to remove any coating but I haven't really looked for that.
