[Q] Tinny sound non-sense roms - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a reason why non-sense roms have such tinny sound from the speaker?
When I run ARHD and Sense 4 roms the sound is so much better sounding and also a bit louder.
If I flash a stock ICS or Jellytime rom the sound is much tinnier sounding and pretty quiet. The difference is very noticable, even to my wife who cares little for roms!!
Was not sure if this was a driver issue with stock ICS/JT roms lacking the proper driver. Does Sense have something that improves the speaker sound that aosp does not?
Thanks.

Use Volume+ from the market

Yes, sense is built for our phones. Thus as you said it has the proper drivers, while aosp roms do not. They are hacks and work arounds that make aosp even have sound on our devices...sense also has srs surround software while aosp does not

I'm having the same issue as the OP, sound quality is horrible on my Inspire 4G using any JB, CM10 or aosp rom, but back on any Sense rom the sound and music sound perfect.
Is there a way to use the Sense sound drivers and srs libraries on JB roms even through a hack? (specially the music player, it was awesome)

You could try AwesomeBeats somewhere on XDA. It mods DSP Manager to use Beats libraries. It actually hasn't impressed me, but others have liked it.
EDIT: oh, and maybe try inspiremod.
EDIT 2: got beat on inspiremod.

Did you flash the inspire mod for your respective rom?
Also the answer to your last question is no. Reason is because htc sense is basically an operating system compatible with android(not vice-versa), but without sense then no sense application can function because the "sense os"(calling it that for simplicity) is not present.

Using PACman v15.0 with 4.2 gapps (tried v16.1 but kept crashing my 4.2 camera and goggle search) and I don't know if it includes the inspire 4g fix, at least is not on their release notes. Can I install a separate Inspire 4G fix (from another rom)?

I'm not sure. I know it depends on each rom. Ask in the rom development thread of your respective rom, as the developer and other people there should know.
Also don't just ask. Tell the problem, and then ask if you can flash the inspire mod from(just for example --> aospx inspire mod) and it resolve your issue. If you just ask you will get flamed, and just wouldn't get an answer.

Just copied from the pacman thread... Although to me it still looks like the inspiremod is your best bet because that other fix looks like it fixes audio when your audio happens to be absent...
Just wondering why not try aospx? I know it's ics but it is much more mature than any jellybean rom?

Before Pacman I was using Sabsa Prime 8.5 which is ICS 4.0.4, I still even have a backup of the rom on my SD card, but after using Pacman (which is basically CM10 with extra tweaks and settings) I don't think I can go back to any ICS rom, JB is really a big step forward in customization and usage. The only things I miss from ICS are some HTC apps and music player.

As far as a music player I advise zplayer...very well polished

Is anyone actually getting decent quality sound on any of the Jellybean roms, comparable to a stock GB/Sense rom (which to me has the best sound)?

the HTC music app is a sense app
it will only work on sense roms, which cyanogenmod is not.
Thanks. That makes sense. I hate the sound on this rom the sense kicks it out with no distort. Do you know a way to solve this if sense can make it happen what do I have to modify to gain the same output. And thanks again pal
Sent from my HTC Wildfire S using xda premium
you can use the dsp manager to try to get sorted
simplest suggestion is to try different music apps with the same headphones, there are many to choose from.
if you still believe that htc music app is the best and is important to your needs, then you will have to use a sense rom.
Thanks again for your input. I did go through the settings even minimal adjustment on dsp but still not good. I also tester the sense rom 3.5 weekly update even the sound on that had changed but full flash happened I was able to view my full flash website. I'm back on cm7 because the ram I's better for pes2012 ect. It also reminds me of my LG and I prefer there Rome. However the sense roms r getting better and may become a great rom for htcs. They need ram and settings for CPU rather than an app extra. Thanks again I still don't understand why the outputs are difrent when hardware is still same there must be a way even if I had to change part of rom?

I would like to mention this is not just a themed rom. It actually has actual parts of each rom included in them which makes for a nice experience. This, in my opinion has been the first rom to do so. I haven't really messed with any other parts of the rom besides the Samsung Galaxy S III part but to my knowledge everything else should be working the same.

My port was built by rasroygbiv, using aospX's last Alpha release as a base (if I recall) and used ICI Build 32/34 as its porting base. I'd suggest using the builds I make off of existz source. They don't have some of the older ICS bugs.

(the newer and larger BR2 is a test build, but has camera working the best as I adjusted some things in the camerahal)

Got really excited about this rom, ram it for a whole 5 minutes, couldn't take how unbearably quiet everything was. I've had this issue in almost every aosp/aokp rom I try and some gb roms even...I'm not talking just quiet, I'm talking needing to hook my phone into the stereo in my truck and turn it up to 50 to get what should be normal ringtone level :-( I need my audible alerts loud and so far nothing is working without having to be hooked to external speakers :-(

Recommend me a ROM

Having used Fresh 4.0.0.4 and CM7 in the past, I'm looking for a ROM with the following:
Stability - no random reboots, crashes, FCs
Speed - doesn't have to blow me away performance-wise but would be nice not to have lag when swiping between screens
Functionality - everything works, 4g, bluetooth, camera, etc
Good Camera/Camcorder - I'm sick of the crappy audio in the stock camcorder (AMR 8000Hz mono 12kbps) and I've used CM7 in the past with much better audio in the camcorder (AAC 16000Hz mono 96kbps)
Smart Dialer - Whenever I use an AOSP ROM I miss the Sense-based smart dialer way way way too much. The GO! launcher and other workarounds never suffice.
I'm open to any/all suggestions, TIA.

I asked about the audio on that thread and while it's still not clear I suspect that the stock camcorder is all they've got which means crappy audio.
And by crappy, I mean Nintendo-like quality of AMR 8000Hz mono 12kbps.
If you've never heard the EVO actually record good audio then do yourself a favor and download Tape-a-Talk and up the settings to max quality to see how good the EVO can record versus what we get in the stock camcorder.
I use Deck's CM7 ROM as my stable backup ROM. Everything just works! Battery life is excellent as well.

Digitalkarmas v7.77 is my favorite of the GB roms. everything works and its quick and stable. Not sure about the audio issue, I dont record video with my evo much.
I'm running ParanoidAndroid for 3-4 days now and really happy with it - makes the phone into a tablet and its ICS. No 4g though, and probably a couple of other missing components because its ICS (they are all missing things.)
mikg or digitalkarma are both great

I highly recommend Digitalkarmas v7.77. I will swear by that ROM
Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up going with Classic for now and using Igcamera instead of the stock camcorder. Gets me high-quality audio with my recordings and Classic looks like a perky little ROM. Only one random reboot so far but that was on force roam in a bad service area so I'm not blaming the ROM for that one.
The smart dialer feature was added to CM 7.2 and works pretty well. I missed the smart dialer when I started using Cyanogenmod and was glad to see it finally incorporated into 7.2.

How does the sound differ on the CM ROM? Just bought this tablet and thinking about returning it.
Coming from a Galaxy Tab 7.7 the sound on this tablet is horrible. It's difficult to hear voices through other sounds, everything is "tinny" and mashed together,
which is a problem as I use the tablet mostly for Youtube and Twitch.

I know what you mean, audio is horrible with stock and is the primary reason i went 3rd party to confirm whether it was sw or hw in order to decide whether to return it; it's just that bad.
happy to report audio is great in mahdi which is cm based. but i think it can be safely confirmed this is some sort of audio layer LG junk.
It's definitely some LG custom audio processing that ruins the sound. It's better in the KitKat official update, tunnely sound is gone but still there's some compression going on that makes many things sound weird and boxy - also some kind of bass enhancement? I can confirm the sound is much more normal in Custom roms.
But now that I installed the stock KitKat update, I'm thinking of trying THIS workaround: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2694246
I'll tell you how it goes. I hope not too bad.

I realised today that PureAudio doesn't do much with LG's audio layer. The lousy stock compression is still there. You can hear what it does mostly when there is some reverb of echo in a sound, like the google now sound right after it registers a voice command/search. It explodes the reverb/echo volume to god. We must find a fix for this without having to install a whole new rom. Someone maybe can detach the CM11 audio thingies and make a flashable zip? Research must happen.
