[Q] WIFI "connects" but no internet access on Oxygen 2.3.2. Help, please! - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Running Oxygen 2.3.2 on a rooted and S-OFF HTC Desire (stock HBOOT), which I flashed tonight.
The WIFI appears to connect to my home network but the phone does not actually receive any internet access.
Prior to rooting I was using the WIFI without issues, and nothing has changed in the network since I rooted - my laptop is currently successsfully connected to the internet.
Security is WPA/WPA2, which I changed from WEP ages ago when a buggy tablet wouldn't connect and I was checking it wasn't the encryption that was causing the problem. the phone was connecting to the WPA/WPA2 succesfully. No proxy.
I've searched and haven't found anyone with this exact issue, so I'm not sure how to go about troublshooting.
- I didn't think flashing the Oxygen HBOOT listed on the alphadev site would solve this problem, so I haven't done that yet.

What's your radio version?

5.09.05.30_2 (stock radio).
Although I haven't checked since I flashed either cyanogen or Oxygen (WIFI wasn't working on cyanogen and I didn't like the ROM a whole lot anyways), but I don't think custom ROMs touch the radio - unless I'm mistaken?

You should definitively upgrade your radio version to the latest one - 5.17.05.23. You can find download link here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687464 The latest radio is highly recommended when using custom ROM, because they are usually tested with latest radio.

Okay, cheers, will do.
EDIT: Nevermind, after scrolling from 2010 to 2012 posts and across two forums, I found the answer (simplest response is on here for anyone interested -- essentially, the method listed is apparently a very old one, pre-recovery days. Just use recovery to flash the radio like you would with a ROM. No wipe needed, apparently.)
I'm assuming you've done this already?
If so, could you explain step 6 - where do I get the .bat script / modaco r5 root pack... Do I even need it since my phone is rooted and has recovery etc?
(I've read several people saying you "just flash it like you would flash a ROM", so I'm guessing that means loading the radio's .zip file onto my SD card and flashing from recovery like I would with a ROM?)
1. Turn your desire off
2. Hold the back button and turn your desire on
3. When you are at the white screen, make sure BOOTLOADER is selected and press the power button
4. Wait a few seconds then press volume down to select RECOVERY and press the power button again
5. When you are at the screen with the red triangle and the phone, plug in the usb cable
6. Run the recovery-windows.bat script from modaco r5 root pack
7. When the recovery menu appears select 'Flash zip from sdcard'
8. Select the radio zip file and press the trackerball to confirm
9. Press the trackerball over 'Reboot system now'
10. When the radio image has finished being written unplug the usb cable
11. The phone will reboot a couple of times and then return to a normal state with your new radio

The steps you found are probably outdated. It's really simple. Download latest radio and put it to the root of your SD card. Then you have to reboot to recovery (directly from running ROM or with volume down button pressed when powering up the device). Once you're in recovery, select update from zip (I don't know if you're using Clockworkmod or 4Ext) and choose zip file you downloaded before. Device should reboot and reflash the radio. That's all...

Does upgrading the radio influence the WIFI though?
I've been reading the radio-related post that lists the newest radios and there's a lot of talk about GPS and signal strength improving / worsening with radio changes, but haven't yet found anything relating to WIFI.

Ah crap
Just flashed the latest radio (5.17 etc) as I would with a ROM - yes I did a nand backup using Amon Ra.
Anyways, flashed it - told me it was doing its thing, asked me to restart system to allow it to finish etc, so I did.
It flashed to the HTC boot screen, then returned to Amon Ra recovery
Its now been about 5-10minutes and there's a msg saying:
Build: RA-desire-v2.0.1
Formatting CACHE:...
And that's it. Hasn't moved a bit since that screen and msg came back.
What can I do now? I can navigate the Amon Ra recovery menu, but I'm scared to reboot the system in case I brick my phone.... help please!

So I accidentally solved the problem when I accidentally hit hte trackball and confirmed the "reboot system now" option from the main menu.
Radio is upgraded successfully by the looks of it.
Unfortunately though, WIFI still doesn't work

You've gone through all the trouble of changing your radio. Did you ever bother to try other roms first?
You say that nothing has changed with your wifi connection but you are using a secured connection. Did you even tried a connection with your wifi unsecured and try to establish a connection with the phone?

If you're going to just get narky, then I'm not sure why you're posting, tbh.
Yes, I had used cyanogen 7 prior to oxygen and had the same problem.
And I only flashed oxygen on Monday night, so I don't have the luxury of running around finding unsecured wifi during my work days.
Having said that, a neighbour leaves unsecure wifi on late at night, and I can pick it up and managed to briefly connect to the net before the signal strength died., so yes I'm assuming I can connect to at least one unsecured network.
Which I guess means something's been changed in the scripts running in custom roms vs stock, which isn't helpful.

Well, could you confirm you have the latest radio now? I mean was the upgrade successful? Did you try to do nandroid backup, wipe device and test from scratch with fresh install?

I'm just suggesting things that ya'll may have overlooked. I've used CM and Oxygen and never had any issues with wifi may it be what type of security being implemented.

Well after playing around with my router's settings for ages, I finally made it work by changing the mode from "b/g/n mixed" to "b/g mixed". I was able to keep my WPA2 security on.
- Yep, radio was succesfully upgraded, even though it didn't appear to be.
I guess these custom ROMs do something to the WIFI component of the Desire because I was able to connect to the network with the b/g/n mixed mode in use before I flashed the custom ROMs.
This is annoying because it means I'll likely not be able to use any public WIFI hotspots that are set as b/g/n mixed...

Just to illustrate how tricky this can be. I had the same symptoms on my HTC Desire: Wifi connected OK to a b/g/n router but would not transfer any data through browsers, email, PlayStore, anything really.
Initially running Miui 2.4.9 and Wifi was OK.
Upgraded to Miui 2.4.13 but the ugrade did not complete successfully. The phone worked except that Wifi connected but didn't work.
Restored the phone with an earlier backup of MildWild CM-8.0 ROM which used to have working Wifi. Wifi still no good.
Flashed latest Radio 5.17.05.23. Wifi still no good.
Flashed earlier Radio 5.09.05.30. Wifi still no good.
Flashed full GB Miui 2.4.13 ROM. Wifi still no good.
Re-flashed latest Radio 5.17.05.23. Wifi works!!!! WTF?

[Q] is my phone lying about its baseband version?

Sorry for the poor title, but I think I am in a strange place. I was upgrading the radio from the standard factory version to version 2.15, and I watched the phone go through all the updating motions (including adding a nice new splash screen) but the "about phone" still states version 1.x
To make it stranger, I now have a mobile hotspot widget and a part in my wifi settings to enable wireless router (if I click it however, it only states "error")
I have not yet updated to the skyraider rom (which was the goal), so all that has been attempted is the radio update.
Is it possible that the radio update was successful? If not, what would be my best course of action to move forward in a rom change?
Thanks in advance to everyone.
i believe your sd card has to be in the fat32 format and this has caused the same problem for many people. check that first.
I double checked, and its fat32, class 4. Also, I've now noticed that my camera is no longer functioning.
Have you ran unrevoked forever to enable s-off?
2.15.x radio requires it to work.
Be careful though updating radio twice WILL brick.
I say install a rom such as sky raider and if its still not showing the right version try again.
I didn't think that radio alone added a new boot animation that should be rom based are you sure you installed the right thing?

Very big problem with my Desire and Wifi Connection

Hey guys,
im running a Desire with the newest Leedroid Rom. Everythings working perfect,
except the wifi network connection.
My Problem:
After i updated from branded 2.1 to 2.2 with OVA Update, i cant connect to any
encrypted wifi. I dont get an error or something, it just tries to get a ip adress
and then it says Connecting... and then it starts again from trying to get an
ip-adress and so on and so on...
The only thing thats working is to connect to an open wifi hotspot.
Things i tryed:
- Other Router, other settings, other decryption, other keys, and so on
It has to be a problem in updating process, cause with 2.1 it works and after i
update to 2.2 i cant connect to any wifi anymore.
I really need help cause i think this cant be a hardware problem, cause everything else is working.
Sry for my english, tried my best
nge89
Do a full wipe and flash leedroid again.
I have done full wipes like 100 times, also im always testing new roms,
so i was on modaco, leedroid, cyanogen and installed them many times.
So that cant be the problem
nge89
First how do you do a full wipe?
Second what is a OVA update? is it the same as OTA? And what does the update have to do with your wifi not working on leedorid? Did you OTA update form a rooted 2.1 rom?
Has wifi ever worked on 2.2? What radio are you using?
I do a full wipe with all 4 wipe options, dont know the exactly names.
Yeah sry, with OVA i mean the OTA.
No, i did a OTA Update from a branded unrooted 2.1 Desire to the branded 2.2 Froyo version. And wifi NEVER worked on any 2.2 version.
I just rooted my phone when i was on branded 2.2 version, cause i wanted to
try some of the nice roms.
In this time i never used wifi, only mobile network connection, cause i was long
time not at home and couldnt use any wifi, now im back here and trying to solve
my wifi problem.
Just checking my Radio version and i have 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2, but i dont
know why, thought i had installed a newer
Should i try the 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27?

Yes looks like 2.1 radio, try the newer but do not pull the battery during the update it will reboot twice and don't touch anything during the process. I take no responsibility for what happens and I suggest you do some searching on the radio flashing process. Also don't forget to check the md5 of the download.
Might sound a bit scary but if you follow the procedures and don't do anything stupid it should go well.
i encountered the same problem only i'm on 2.1 after downgrading from 2.2 and rom jumping. did a wipe and even tried to nand restore my original stock rom. is this a radio error?
the phone was working fine. this issue happened to me while i was trying to fix a battery drain problem, i did a dalvik + cache wipe and the battery was fixed but the wifi started doing this. my phone could still be on the 2.2 radio

Would be nice if you would post the radio version
was about to edit my post with the info, you beat me to it
Radio: 5.11.05.27
HBoot: 0.93.0001
Im now also on 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27. Still the same Problem.
That u can imagine how it looks like:
1. Wlan -> power on
2. Select my Wlan Acess Point
3. Type in my Wlan Key
4. Its says Wlan -> " The Connection is now being established"
5. Wlan -> "Authentication with "Wlan Accespoint name" "
6. Wlan -> " Not Connected"
7. Wlan -> "Scan..."
After this steps it repeats from step 4-7 again and again and nothing is happening.
nge89
Also tried with another keyboard, in another thread someone said it worked for him
with another keyboard. But not for me, still the same problem.
nge89
ok i fixed the problem and now Wifi works perfectly!
I downloaded the same version radio and flashed it again from AmonRA recovery and now the Wifi and mobile network work just fine.
I got the radio from this thread and it has the instructions on how to flash the radio.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687464
I just flashed the radio with clockworkmod and with install zip from sdcard. Is that wrong?
You had the same problem like me?
Nge89
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
no its not wrong, thats what i did only with AmonRA. yeah from your description i had the same problem. The wifi would detect my wireless network but would refuse to connect and kept giving me "unsuccessful" errors.
The problem is, that i dont get any error.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Some one any idea?
flashing the radio again didn't fix it?
Did you try to disable any protection (wep, wpa, wpa2) on your router and then connect? Also try to disable dhcp on your router and assign static IP adress to your HTC device. I had problems connecting to wifi but after I assign static IP everything is ok.
Yeah, i can connect with disabled security. With static ip and crypted wifi it
doesnt work, i cant connect.
nge89
Then your problem most probably lies in "shaking" between HTC and router. Did you try with basic 64 bit or 128 bit wep? In many cases shaking troubles occur when one device doesn't support encryption of another. For example I had troubles connecting my windows 7 because of ****ty drivers off my wireless card. I could only use wep. Also can you check that portable wi-fi hotspot in wi-fi hotspots is disabled? And try to add your wireless manually so when you enable wi fi it should connect you automaticly without having you to enter your password.

[Q] Unique WIFI problem

Hi all, I've done a search but can not find a similar problem.
I have Eclair 2.1 running on my Desire. It's rooted
The problem is I can not connect to my router (or any other router for that matter).
The phone does however recognise available wireless networks. Allows me to select my home network and enter the WEP but just doesn't connect. It also has a MAC address allocated on the phone.
One thing I am unsure of is when I try to enter the WEP key, just above the input box there is the drop-down option to select Key Index of which the options are 1, 2, 3 or 4. What does this mean?
I've also got the option to update the OS to Froyo 2.2. It's an OTA update and unfortunately my only option is to do t via 3G as I can't do WIFI (as stated above). Almost 90mb!!!
Will there be any issues with installing this update... considering this phone has been unlocked, Rooted and has ClockworkRecoveryMod?
Don't want to waste 90MB to find it doesn't work.
Just a suggestion. try disabling your router security and see if it connects then. If it does try using Mac address filtering instead so the desire will think it's just going onto an unsecure network.
Why would you want to take the official OTA upgrade to froyo at this time when there are a bajillion custom froyo, desire hd and gingerbread roms out there?
If you like htc sense and froyo, then i suggest you try leedroid. Its pimped up stock froyo. And you can download it onto your computer first. Plus its guaranteed to work.
If I'm not wrong, doing the OTA update will overwrite your hboot and recovery as well, thus unrooting your phone. And the newest hboots may be shackled down with more security that existing methods cannot unlock- your phone may become unrootable.

Unfortunately... very unfortunately indeed... I went through with the OTA update via ClockworkRecovery. I used the 'Apply SD Card/Update.zip' option before I read your reply.
I've bricked my phone!! It won't go bast the initial HTC screen.... just keeps rebooting. Yes... I'm kicking myself for it now.
I've lost recovery mode now. I can get into the initial bootloader screen but when you select the option for 'Recovery', I ust get a pic of a phone with a hazard sign [!]. Very bad. It doesn't repspond to anything and the only way to turn it off is to pull the battery.
Any suuggestions on how to fix or have I got a dud phone now?
managed to sort it out eventually. Phew!!
Still got the wifi issue though
I've changed the Router (o2 wirless box) settings from WEP to WPA/PSK.. also selected different channels and even tried it without any security on at all (open network)... but my phone still won't connect. It scans perfectly fine and finds the network. Just won't connect.
I thought the Froyo update might hep fix it but to no avail.
i'm never going to get to the bottom of this am I?

Device Reboot when using WiFi or Mobile Interent

Please help. I just got used HTC Incredible.
It is S-OFF, Hboot-0.92, Radion 2.15.00.07.28 and Android 2.2
It is only work when no WiFI and not Mobile Internet.
If I turn on Mobile Interent I have up to minutes to use Interent and then device going in rebootin and white screen. Removing battery sometimes help and device starts loading but then will rebooting again.
Will changing ROM helps?
As I saw a lot of people has similar problems in USA.... may be I got bad device(
You received your DInc with S-OFF? Sounds like someone sent it in and the refurb department didn't do its job in checking the phone and reloading it... then sent it to you.
You could always flash the stock ROM back onto and see what it does.
http :// dougpiston . com/?page_id=108
is where you can get the Stock ROM from. You will need to place it on you SD card and name it PB31IMG.zip
Boot up into your HBOOT and proceed with the update
Thanks! It was on original Rom when I got it but with S-OFF! and was rebooting when try to use WiFi or Mob. Internet.
Now I'm on cyanogenmod 7 and then same problem.
Do I need play with radio version? Will it may help?
If you go back stock it will unroot you..... if you give me some more info I might be able to help..... like when you flashed cm7 did you do a full wipe and what recovery do you have
Plus did you get it from Verizon or Craigslist or something
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
Yes, I did full wipe.
Now I'm under CM7 and seems it working now more stable. So I can use interent via WiFI near 10-15 minutes. Under Mobile connection near 5-10minutes. If I do just quick connection on 30-60 second it not rebooting at all.
I got the phone from a person who, I think, take it from ebay. It has verizon sign on it.
When I got it was with original lates ROM.
I'm starting think that it is overheating. May be I can low processor speed?
Updated. Also I've installed prog called 'neocore' which does 3d benchmark testing. I need to run just 2-3 times this test and my device starts rebooting.
I had a similar problem when using custom kernels with HAVS or smartass governors on them. Do you have Set CPU or any other program that controls your processing speed/voltage? If so, try disabling them and see if you still have the problem. Some phones do not react well to under/overclocking.
im not sure what kernel comes with cm7 but some dincs dont like multitouch kernels.... and they will kick you off apps and sometimes reboot so i would try switching kernels first.. try one that is close to stock
Just back to stock ROM. And what I see, that if I disable Mobile Internet it works stable. Just turn on Mobile Internet and it starts rebooting. Stock rom has a lot of apps which connect to the internet. Even with disabled auto-update I still see how on booting 3g icons areas and arrows up-down are blinking.
As I see after connection to the mobile internet my device starts rebooting. And only one think helps - remove battery and wait several minutes, which allows boot in successfully. And then if turn off mobile access it will work well (((
Thats odd that ur phone does that. Did u try and change the radio?
Seems that is last what I can try. Or will need to sell it on parts for cheap (.
As I know radio 2.15.00.07.28 is very stable. Which one you recomend to use?
And how to be sure that it will work well with my Current ROM?
Can I install older radio? like 2.07.00.07.16? or even older?
Thanks for help!

i have an idea man maybe you should run an RUU to unroot you and format everything back to the way it was from the factory.... if that dont help it has to be a hardware issue.... let me know and ill help you through it
Thank for helping. Just not sure that unroot may have difference. But will try at last.
What I had found last days. I had changed radio to some version.
On 2.15.00.09.01 was very fast rebooting after try use internet.
On 2.07.00.07.16 was working a bit longer, but not so much.
And 2.05.00.06.11 - the best one! Plus I switched to Stock rom with Android 2.2 and whole day without rebooting.
Only one reboot was when do charging of the device.
The only problem I've under 2.05.00.06.11 that Interent working only via 1x speed. It always tries to connect via 3G, but no luck and switch to 1x.
What do u think now?
Again, thanks for help!

[Q] Losing 3g on Gingervillain 1.3 - 1.9

I've been using GV for months now, but I still have the same issue no matter what kernel I use. If I switch on WiFi, I can't acces my 3G network later on. I have to go to 2G and turn on 3G again to get the connection going again. Putting the device in flight mode also works, but it's a bit of a pain in the ...
I've seen other posts about this problem, but there is no fix that I know of. Any help?
Currently running GV 1.9
Radio: 5.11.05.27
Kernel: 2.6.38.2-defrost-brav
It would be down to the rom and I don't think there is any dev for it anymore... either put up with it or just change rom. You could try updating your radio to 5.14.05.17.
Ok thanks,
I thought flashing a radio was pretty dangerous. How does it work? Same as any other flash?
Yeh, just bung the zip onto your SD, boot into recovery and flash it. Reboot and it will install and your done. It is safer than flashing it through fastboot and it's the way I do it.
Do you have a link to that file?
Nevermind, I flashed a file I found. All is well again.
