Hey guys/girls! So basically i had the Galaxy Note for some time now and really enjoyed the experience, however sold the Note in order to start saving up for a new phone. I got around $475 from the Note. So now i have cash in hand and will be able to save up some more over time. Here is what i want to know:
Should i go for the galaxy nexus or a high end device like the S III? If you recommend this please give your insight on the outdated hardware and what i will expect from it? Also please tell me about the Jelly Bean performance and does it make a large difference? Most importantly please tell me about whether the SGX 540 GPU and TIOMAP CPU will live up to expectation in future?
Ummm, no!

Don't do it. The Gnex is soooo outdated. Seriously though, you will have to make the decision on your own. Coming into a Gnex forum asking if it's worth it may not give the the info you are looking for. I love mine. I am sure many here love theirs. I personally I would pick up the Gnex now as it is super cheap and save you money for the next Gnex (hopefully coming this Fall/Winter).
Good luck! :good:
The GN is an amazing phone, coming from the HTC One X.
GN + JB + Butter makes for the best phone I've ever owned.

Honestly, if you want gaming performance and camera, I would wait it out until the next nexus (probably this winter if I had to guess). The GN's camera simply isn't the best on the market and the same goes for the gaming power. If you want the best cam and performance NOW, look at the HOX or GS3... keep in mind though that you are giving up much of what makes nexus great, like up to date OS, zero bloat, and a very strong developer community.
The HOX on AT&T for instance does not have a released source code or unlocked bootloader (unless you do the CID trick).
I'm pretty sure the GS3 also does not have an unlocked bootloader unless you get the "developmental" edition or something.. I haven't been keeping track.
The SGS3 isn't really better than the gnex other than camera.
The processor benches better, ok yeah we know krait does, but the gnex never lags, so why do you need a slightly better dual-core that benches a little better on paper?
2 gigs of ram... Yeah that's a gimmick, the SGS3 I had lagged compared to the Gnex because Samsung written ICS cannot compare with AOSP Jellybean.
Same screen size (basically) and same resolution. The only thing the SGS3 really has over the gnex is the camera. If 5MP "good" camera isn't enough, and you need the 8MP with better optics, then I guess drop more money for it, but I have used the SGS3, the HOX, the Note, and the GNex, and out of all of the above, the gnex is better for my money. Great performance, great development, no ugly ass home button, just a better overall experience.
But then you can't brag about how technically your processor is better and the extra useless gig of ram to keep 50 apps open, and the camera that still isn't an SLR so why bother

The only Galaxy phone to EVER have a locked bootloader is the Verizon SGS3, all others are unlocked.
For the price, you can't beat it. Unless you want to pay more than $500 for the next nexus then you can wait, otherwise the gnex is one of the best phones out right now IMO. Plus it runs everything smoothly. Also it was the first phone running JB so I don't know why you're calling it outdated.

IF you have lots of money get SGS3. I think its better overall.
If you have money to buy SGS3 but you want to spend on something else and doesn't mind having 16GB of storage, decent 3D performance and decent camera just get the GNex no doubt! You can't get a better phone with a great software support on that price.

Hi all!
I saw a brand new Galaxy Nexus for sale, around $300 when converted. Is buying it right now a wise move? Considering the Nexus 4 is already out, and almost surely the next Nexus is on the way.
In any case, this will be my first 'real' Android phone, as I have an Alcatel which is pretty much limited in functionality and an N7.
Thank you for your time!
Well, if u don't play any games , and want an amazing phone, buy it. (i Bought it like 5 days ago and i'm not regretting since then.
If u want to play games with amazing graphics etc, go for nex4/s3/etcetcetc .
TL;DR
If u don't care of having a quadcore cpu, buy gnex
Q's go in Q&A
Thread moved
Thanks
FNM
I haven't encountered a game yet with any graphica issues so I think that is a moot point personally

From where I am, there is a 150$ (when converted) difference between the two nexus phones
Actually that price differential is why I am considering a GNex
It is because the Nexus 4 here are gray market imports, as one cannot order hardware in Play Store. So aside from the price, availability is an issue as well
And since I have a Nexus 7 anyway, I plan on using my prospective new phone more as a call and text device
Then I would save the money. I use mine for fun with flashing roms and for calls texting and email. No games. I'll have it as long as I can keep updating it. It's been a gem of a phone
GNex was born in 2011 and has terrible batt life and the 5 mp camera
is mediocre at best. Patience is a virtue. Hustle up the 150 and get the
latest nexus. But in the same breath I love my GNex and wouldn't trade
it for a n4.
Bad battery life is the only thing I hate about this phone.
--------------------------------------------------
If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^
Battery life is fine. I've gotten 30 hours with 3 hours screen time on standard battery. The N4 may have better life but how often do you need more than 12 to 15 hours?
I'd say GNex is still a good buy and will probably keep it for as long as it lasts.
Thanks! I guess i would wait for the next device then
Hopefully it becomes available here as soon as its released

Battery life is good on the gsm version, everything I've read about N4 battery life doesn't show it being any better. And the 5mp camera takes very good pictures actually, especially compared to my previous phone with a 5mp camera. As you already have a nexus 7, I'd say the G'nex would compliment it well. I'm very happy with my nexus 7/G'nex combo. I'll probably wait at least another year before upgrading phones.

Hi, while the gnex is an amazing phone, i wouldnt buy it NOW for 300 bucks.
I bought my phone literally 5 days ago, brand new, for 130 bucks, off a friend from retailer. If you have to pay 300 bucks, I would suggest you simply wait for nexus 4 to come back in stock instead of buying gnex.
Nexus 4 it's better in all ways than the Nexus,so if you can wait for the Nexus 4 then that should be your choice, otherwise Nexus it's still a great phone and you can play every game there is on the market!

"Is it worth buying?". Nobody can answer that question for you. Everybody has different expectations, budgets, preferences. There are plenty of reviews and comments on these forums, and elsewhere online. Read up, and formulate your own decision.
As far as upcoming devices, as far as I know, a new Nexus7 is only rumored to be coming in 3 months or so. But just a rumor, and we don't know anything about the specs. People are also talking about a new iPad Mini. But I personally do not prefer the iOS closed ecosystem. Plus, Apple is pretty much on a yearly refresh cycle for its products. So we probably won't see a new Mini until close to Christmas. Again, we also don't know anything about it. So something unknown and not coming for over 6 months is not really a "competitor" to what you can buy now (or very soon, in your case).
In any case, I expect the next N7 and iPad Mini to continue to push the budget/mid or low range tablet market. Guessing that specs would be comparable to the Note 8. Maybe a tiny bit better in some specs as technologies progress, but nothing that will blow the Note 8 away or make it obsolete.
Its a great tablet. My opinion, the best tablet you can get in a 7-8" form factor at the present time. The rest is up to you.

Don't know how the price of these devices varies in your country versus US. But I imagine its at least proportional.
People keep commenting that the Note 9 is "over priced" or "expensive". I think that is crap. The only reason people say that is because of the release of low priced "budget" tablets like the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, that are gimped for features. Decent devices, but they sacrifice features to get a low "entry" price for the masses. Yes the Nexus 7, for example, is $200 US cheaper than the Note 8. But the N7 lacks a rear facing camera, removable SD, pen support as well as having a older/slower CPU, less RAM, and a smaller screen.
A better point of comparison might be the iPad Mini, which is $70 cheaper than the Note 8. Not a huge difference. Yes, Apple has a talent for charging a premium for their devices. But again, the Note 8 has it beat for many features, including pen support, removable SD, and a lot more RAM (2 GB vs. 512 MB).
I paid a hefty premium of $499 for the HTC Flyer back in the summer of 2011. Didn't regret a penny. Similar in many ways philosophically to the Note 8, with pen support, great specs for its time, a full list of features, and an incredibly premium look and feel. Yes, the Flyer's price is a lot of what held it back. But I loved the thing. It now shows its age, and I've moved on to it for the Note 8. But I held onto it for a long time, simply because the other 7-8" form factor tablets were all in the "budget" range and simply didn't seem like much of an upgrade. Faster CPU and more RAM, but a lot less features.
The Note 8 is a premium device. Its thin, light and sexy (actually weighs less than the N7, despite having a significantly larger screen). Its jam packed with features and high specs (maybe not the type of specs that would blow you away, but still great) and meant to appeal to enthusiasts, not the budget conscious. And this is XDA. When the heck has this been a place for people who buy middle of the road devices at budget prices? This is a place for tech geeks, the type of people that the Note 8 was made for. Yet so many complaints about the Note 8 being "over priced".

The Note 8.0 is a great device but you must keep it in mind, it is a premium product. The Main reason it costs more than the iPad Mini is that it has better specs but more importantly the Wacom Digitizer.
If you don't really have much need for the S-pen and don't need 3G, I believe a Nexus 7 would be a better choice for you.(Now that it is officially launched in India)It is pretty good in Gaming and Tegra 3 isn't fading away soon. It costs only half of the Note 8.0.
Heck I would have probably bought it, but no pen input+lack of TV-out turned it down.
If you don't use the 3G, (put it on airplane mode0, consumption would be same as Wi-Fi model
Also, don't give much importance to the fact that they are giving a free book cover. For one, it is a bit flimsy and won't last very long(from the reviews here at XDA).Search ebay.in, you can find cheaper and better covers.
Also when the Note 8.0 actually launched, it would be easily 1000-1500 Rs less than the Pre-Order Price(This is usually the case with most Pre-Orders)

Ya i thought of buying N7 and Tab 2 7.But both are one year old. Also N7 doesn't have expandable memory. Tab 2 7 has weak specs for gaming. So planning to buy Note 8. My main usage is games, you tube, videos.
So should i w8 of go with the Pre order? Flipkart also has it for pre order same price with EMI options no free cover.

Look at the 32 GB Version of the N7, I don't think you will be able to cross that Space limit, unless you fill up the Tab with Movies you watched once, and never intend to again. It is available for 19K at Play store now.
Tab2 is certainly anemic in terms of power, but the n7 can still hold its own. If you really ever need to get more storage, USB-OTG can be used.
If you don't require the S-pen , 12 K price difference is a lot for just expandable Memory.
BTW, you can also look at some lower tier brands (Like iBerry, it comes with same CPU/GPU as the Note 8.0.....10 inch....for 18K....3G)

I'm not much of a tablet gamer. But comments on other threads seem to indicate that gaming performance is quite good.
"Is it future proof" is another question that is impossible to answer. If I just say "yes" will it make you happy? haha
It depends on how you use your tablet, how you like to spend your money, how critical performance is to you. "Is it future proof" is purely a matter of personal opinion and preference.
As I mentioned above, I don't see any tablets in this size range really exceeding the Note 8's specs by much (if at all) in the coming year. The trend for tablets in the 7-8" form factor seems to be mid-range specs on cheap tablets to get them into as many hands as possible. This is the first real premium tablet in this size range for some time. And I don't expect any of the major manufacturers to jump in with more premium quality tablets any time soon.
If you want to talk about how future-proof this device is, versus "cheaper" tablets that are presently available, the Note 8 blows them away. The Nexus 7, Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, and Kindle Fire HD are already all obsolete in comparison. So I find it a bit odd that you are talking about how expensive the Note 8 is one minute, then asking how future proof it is, the next minute.

Obviously, transmitting data over thousands of feet uses significantly more battery than transmitting 50 feet. How much faster, I have no idea. I only have the WiFi version.

Yes absolutely, the minute I can get my hands-on it(quite literally).
But I am certainly not pre-ordering anything. The First week of May, I can probably check it out nicely at Croma and probably even buy it at a lower price, or at other local Mobile Shops.
If you had to get a new phone, what would it be, and why ?
I am looking at the Xperia P/S or HTC One S. They are cheap and good phones. Im pretty much done with playing with ROMs and Kernels Just want a fast and stable experiance.
The HTC is a nice phone but there are "rumors" about issues, while the xperia NXT line is quite bugless (I had the xperia U and gave it to my sis).
Im asking because my screen is broken and im looking to sell the device (I can get at least 200$ for it !).

The glass is broken at the top, LCD is fine. The phone started making some slight motherboard-related issues and besides, changing the front glass is either expenssive or risky. I bought it for like 500$ here (Israel) about 6 months ago, and now a new one would cost 450$. So 200$ at least is fair ^^.

i'd rather change the broken gnex to a brand new gnex..
lol..
sorry..so much love for gnex mate..
If I need to change my phone, I would like to try Windows Phone. May be Lumia 925.
I'm still worried that using Windows Phone will cause me problem with lack of apps and data sync with my current Google Account.
So if I choose another Android, it should be a phone with large battery capacity (a little disappointed with GNex's battery performance). Maybe Xperia ZL or HTC One. I definitely will try to avoid getting another Samsung phone (despite the price is really good).
The only phone which I would consider right now would be the HTC Butterfly, because it has a 3200 mha battery.
But currently I am still fine with the gnex. I will first wait what will come this year.

well obviously it won't get as much as development as the nexus 5 but then again i may be wrong :silly::silly:
I'm stuck on Verizon, so I'll likely be buying one of the new Motorola phones coming out in the fall. If there's something good unlocked, I'll probably jump on it. If there are more expensive ones with a better quality/better support, I may be willing to wait until my contract is up in June.

Really? 1.5ghz quad core vs 1.2ghz dual core, 2 gigs of ram vs 1 gig of gnex? Hmmmm not really much of an upgrade is that? I don't think so..
Btw if your reading humors about the motox humors said that it will be dual 1.7ghz processor with 3 gigs of ram...

You can never have enough of RAM despite what you think.
And to say the uograde from the gnex to the n4 is not much of an upgrade is just a sweeping statement. I would say it's not worth it to upgrade from the gnex to the n4, but if you have the cash, why not?

was thinking the same , until i decided to wait and see what android 5 will bring for my nexus , i hope good stuff

You got to own one to know it..
I'm pretty sure it's abused or dropped, my friends never had issues with the n4 back, so do my friends with iPhones(that's not the point alright, just pointing out the similar glass back)

Was there anyone else who was looking forward to the unveiling of the Moto X today as a replacement for their GNex? Seemed too good to be true; non pentile amoled screen, similar form factor, near stock version of Android, great battery life, awesome camera, a 32gb option for gsm etc. I didn't care too much about the SOC specs as much as I was about pricing off contract. I'm not one of those delusionary people that were hoping for $199 or even $299 off contract, I knew that wasn't likely to happen. But from the looks of it we're looking at $639 for the 32gb model.... I was prepared for $400-500.
To be honest, I'm very happy with my GNex, the only gripe would be battery life at this point. Screen size is perfect, I actually love amoled displays, the 4.3 update is running really well.
So I guess I'm asking what is everyone looking forward to to replace their GNex? The GE phones do nothing for me, neither does the N4, and since there's a big chance the next Nexus will be derivative of the G2 I don't have my hopes up for it either.

And the fact its only available in the US is pretty crap for us non-Americans. Seems pretty pricey though for a 'mid-range- phone.
What I've been hoping for is a G1 revamp. Absolutely loved that phone, and with the great specs HTC *can* push out of phones, that'd be beyond amazing IMO.

If the Moto X were to be $400 off contract I would be extremely tempted. The people who were hyping this phone to be $199-299 off contract and are disappointed have nobody to blame but themselves.
As for what you should upgrade to, what exactly are your looking for if the GE phones, Nexus 4 and the G2 don't strike your fancy? The Gnex is still a decent phone. You should be able to hold out on it for at least another 6 months to a year if you can live with the battery life and performance.
The pricing of the N4 is very appealing, but I'm not fond of the construction of it and neither the battery life. I'm over capacitive buttons, so the GE devices are out, and looks to me that their updates won't be coming in a timely manner (compared to a Nexus). I guess I saw the Moto X as the perfect replacement because the size, screen, and clean design are very similar, only better. I decided years ago that I'd never be tied to a carrier contact, nor purchase another cdma device, so off contract pricing is a very big component. Kinda wish the pricing would've leaked early so I wouldn't have been so disappointed.

Nexus 5 is the only phone I will be upgrading to, my gnex was the best decision i made an getting it when it first launched, almost 2 years since I got it an still reasonably good compared to the current smartphones out there an still getting the latest google updates.I will definitely get N5 at launch or just after so I can get the most time out of it before needing another upgrade just like I did with the gnex which will last probably till the end of this year before its hardware becomes too obselete to bother using anymore an dies a graceful death.

I really don't see the point in the moto x phone, do Motoroa expect this phone to do well when its not even available outside the US lol, near stock version of android basically means no official Google updates an n5 will most likely have better hardware, pure android an cheaper price tag.
I'm not sure what people were expecting from the moto x. It seems pretty nice to me. I will probably get it or the nexus 5. Every comment section is full of "mid range" or "last year's" comments. However, the thing benchmarks ahead of the s4 in most things and I'll take a non-pentile 4.7" 720p screen over a ridiculous 5" screen anyday. Wait til the reviews come in, I think they will be better than the fanboys think.

I will wait for a 1080 p screen.
I was never expecting crazy processor specs or a huge screen, just a great form factor and a nearly stock build of android, the battery life and camera were all icing on the cake. I just thought that the price point would reflect the more modest specs. Considering that Motorola is attempting to once again become a major player in wireless, I expected a very aggressive price point. Not the unrealistic $199 and $299 off contract, just lower than the other two major manufacturers.

Has the unlocked pricing been officially announced? All I've seen is the contract pricing and what people think the off contract price will be.

I was looking forward to the Moto X unveiling and I honestly didn't think too much of the rumors saying that it was going to be insanely cheap so I wasn't too surprised at where they priced it. To me the phone looks pretty impressive based on the unveiling yesterday and the initial reviews from Engadget and Gizmodo. Sure it's not at the top of line as far as specs go but at the end of the day if the thing is fast / responsive and provides an awesome end user experience the fact the processor is slightly dated shouldn't (read: doesn't) matter. It's got some pretty cool features that I'm looking forward to; mainly the touchless control, active display, and the camera. And if it really gets 24 hours of battery life on 'mixed' usage (not really sure what 'mixed usage' is though) then this seems like a really solid replacement for my Gnex.
The only thing I don't understand with the phone is the customization and how they seem to be really pushing that as if it is some revolutionary thing. From my understanding this amounts to choosing the color of the back plate, front face and you can engrave the back plate with you email.... Maybe they think this will be a big hit with mainstream consumers but I don't see this as that big of a deal. I suppose it is kind of nice being able to pick the colors and what not as it makes it more personalized and makes people think that it is 'their' phone and is different than everyone else's.
Unfortunately I'm not eligible for upgrade for a while so I won't be looking to replace my Gnex just yet but if I were I think the Moto X would definitely be at the top of my list. And even when I am eligible I still might consider the Moto X seeing as I would probably be able to get it at a pretty decent price.
At&t pricing off contract is $575 and $630 for 16 and 32 GB models. There's a possibility that a Google Play edition could come in at a lower price point, but I'm not that optimistic about that considering the GPE One and S4 pricing. Google and Motorola have both stated that there will not be any special allowances made to Moto phones and that they're "just another manufacturer" to Google.

Technically we don't know true pricing, just at&ts pricing. They have no incentive to make it cheaper than the s4. I'm not sure how much control manufacturers have over carrier pricing. Remember the Nexus 4 was originally selling for more at T-Mobile than Google Play.

I ended up buying a Galaxy Note 2 off contract on Verizon. I wanted to keep my unlimited data and the moto x was a pretty big let down.
The G2 and the Note 3 have my attention though.
I will say the Galaxy Nexus is by far the longest i've ever owned a smartphone and overall it is a great device. The battery life and reception are my only two complaints but overall the phone is a beast.

It doesn't out benchmark S4 from what I've seen - not that benchmarks matter...
But where did you see that?
I'll end up getting the Oppo Find 5 or its' successor when it comes out. Don't get me wrong the Moto X is a nice phone, but the price to performance ratio sucks. They made the Moto X for consumers, with more fancy software witchcraft, they did not make it for us geeks.

It has the same gpu as the s4,so it wins all graphics tests since it has less pixels to push. This also helps put it close in most overall tests. It's not the same setup as the Nexus 4, despite all the ignorant posts in comment sections.

Really wish I would have waited to upgrade. If I can I will trade my note 2 for the moto x. miss stock android and the aosp build on the note just aren't as smooth as on a nexus.
