Turning the data connection on or off

Hi,
If I read the HTC Desire manual page 128:
Code:
[B][U]Turning the data connection on or off[/U][/B]
...
Press HOME > MENU and then tap Settings > Wireless & networks.
Select the Mobile network check box to turn on the data connection; clear the check box
to turn off the data connection.
We can simply check/uncheck the above option to turn on or off the data connection.
Did you get any problem for turning it back on (from off) ???
Because I read the old HTC Hero (which has this option as well) has problem with this.
When you turn off data, and turn it on again, the phone cannot use data connection unless you soft-reboot.

No probs with mine

I've used this method since last Saturday, saves so much battery on my Desire and when I want the net, I can turn it back on easily enough or if at home just use Wi-Fi.
No problems getting it to turn back on again.

Does this mean I'll have to manually turn data off if I want to use wifi?
Reason why I ask is because I checked my net counter and all my data has come from the data (3G) portion of my phone whilst nothing via wifi.
Probably me being a bit naive as I thought once wifi was on the phone would know to use that automatically as opposed to 3G...
EDIT: Just had a look on my phone and under settings --> wireless and network --> mobile network (uses phone for data connection when wi-fi unavailable) is checked...so would I be correct in assuming that when wi-fi is available data won't be used??
and in Mobile Network Settings --> enable always-on mobile data (uses more power on some mobile networks) is checked (could this be the culprit?)...

there is a widget you can add on your screen to do this (and others) goto widgets then scroll to settings hit the arrow on the right and you get several icons you can drop
airplane mode
bluetooth
gps
mobile network (data)
wifi

Press and hold the power button, it's an option on the quick list.

Program to disable 2G/3G data

I have a plan with 350 MB, but I overstepped it this month. So, is there a program with which I can totally disable 2G/3G data for certain period of time (until 22nd ) and to continue to use voice and WiFi?

Do try APNDroid. Its free and able to do exactly what you ask!
Basically it will disable your 3G by changing the APN values and backing it up. Once you need to use 3G again, it restore the original values to your APN settings.
No reboot required! 3 to 5 secs is all it takes to disable/enable 3G

Be aware that sometimes, when you uninstall APNDroid it can mess your APN values and you will have to re-enter them manually

Can't say I encounter this.
You encounter this before? Perhaps you might want to let the author know so can fix it?

APN droid is perfect dont worry.
If you uninstall it with your connection off, you can fiz this by going to your apn settings from Settings>Wireless...>Mobile Networks...>Access Point names>the current apn>Rename it and remove the apndroid from the name.
Thats it.

I would recommend 3G Watchdog. It automatically switches to 2G when you reach previously defined data limit.

APNDroid didn't help, data connection was still turning on after WiFi wents off
But this helped
1. Type *#*#4636#*#* on your dial pad
2. Select "Phone Information"
3. Press "Menu" soft key
4. Select "More"
5. Select "Disable Data on Boot"
6. Reboot

I can also recommend to use '3g Watchdog' combined with 'APNDroid' (both free)
3g watchdog will let you set your monthly data allowance (350MB) so that it resets its counters at a specific date you set (i.e. the 1st of each month) You can then set 3g watchdog to turn off your data connection (via APNDroid) when you've used a percentage amount of data of your choice (i.e. 99%/100% of your allowance for that month).

I'm using APNdroid and 3GWatchdog together and they work great so far.
One thing you have to be careful of is if you are using a task killer. If it kills 3GWatchdog and then you use your data connection, the data you send or receive won't be added to the amount of data in 3GWatchdog.
So be careful with it, especialy if you set your task killer to autokill applications

I recommend data-on-demand. It's free and shuts off your 2g/3g automatically + post reboot without having to mess with the settings. When you want to start it back up again, just go into the settings and set it as turned on.

The best program to enable/disable 3G i recommend Smoda Widget.
You can find it free in the market

Battery Defender works greats for me.

Quick Settings.
It's on the market, one click to disable APn and wifi along with other things, ringer, brightness, bluetooth etc.

[Q] Power Efficiency Setting

Can someone please explain to me in details what's the effect of the "Enable power efficiency" setting in the phone please?. i.e. does it turn off wifi or background data? and if so how often then it turns itself on to update data etc..
I am still really confused

I think it moniters your batt ,when it drops under a certain % it auto shuts down those features which cause heavy drain ie wifi mobile network bluetooth and auto sync ,just gives you a little extra time if your not in a place were you can recharge.

As it self says, it will stop the auto sync for the applications like facebook, mail, google, HTC sense etc. when you are on device 3G mobile network. It has nothing to do with your wi-fi settings. Rather than using Auto Sync on your Mobile 3G network you can alternatively use "sync now" option in Widgetsoid app or plan when do you want to sync your data.

So what's the difference with me turning off "Background data" manually?? If this is the case, this function is pretty much redundant.

its only automatic function. You can set which will be disabled when battery run low. you can fint it in options.

From what I observe at least with Desire HD & the recent 2.3.5 update, this option also affects the way device uses WiFi.
I do not know what exactly are the gradations of shudown for wifi physical or higher levels protocols, but apparently with this option enabled wifi is not so much "instant on" as it is without this option -- if the device is kept off ~10 (approx.) minutes and then switched "on", wifi connection appears only after some time.
Also (I guess as a result of the above), I observe that the device with this option enabled (being switched "off", e.g. during the night), brings up cellular data connection every ~40 minutes or so, I guess to service some data needs (this correlates with com.google.process.gapps activity). Apparently that's because it sees that wifi is really "off", and thinks it's more economic to use cellular data. I would say that average current draw does not change much due to that -- normal "always on" wifi does not take much power anyway.

2) Open JD and go to the "Status" Tab at the top

4) For "Profile" Choose Customize

a) Turn them on and off for what you want, if you want Mobile Data and Wifi to turn on and off on specific apps you can just leave them Enabled.
b) "Schedule" Turning this on will turn on your data every 5m(minutes), 15m, 30m, 1h(hour) or 2h so it can push email and other apps you have set to use data.
c) "Night" this you can use to turn off data while you sleep and for how long you want it off

e) "Interactive" will pop up a window while JD is in the background and you can pick what JD allows the app to do (will go over more of that soon.)
f) "Configure Apps" We will open this to turn app data on/off on when you have it open, on all the time.
1a) Tap "Configure Apps"
a) "Internet Apps" Apps that use the internet
b) "Configured Apps" These apps are configured by you already.
c) "All Other Apps" These apps usually do not need the internet so they do not need to be configured.
2a) Move to any App under "Internet Apps" and tap it
3a) What do the taps mean?
a) "Enable" This app is enabled, when it needs data it will only use data when you have the app opened.
b) "Enable/Screen off" This app is on and using data while the screen is off and or while the app is opened.
c) "Disabled" This app will never use data
d) "Do Nothing" The app will use data when it needs it, JD won't bother its operation.
4a) Examples
a) "Pandora" I have this app set to Enable/screen off so while I have the app running in the background it will still use data, or while the screen is off it will use data.
b) "Ebay" This app is Enabled, when I open the app and I am looking at it it will use data, but if I hit the home button it stops using data, wont use data while screen is off.
c) "AccuWeather" Disabled, this app will only use data when my Schedule turns data on for ALL items on my phone every 2 hours, it will then update anything it needs to then end data usage for two more hours.
d) "Root Browser Lite" Do nothing, This app will use data whenever it wants regardless of JD rules unless data is disabled.
Using this set up for me, data is always off unless an app needs it that I allow to use it while the phone is asleep (Enable/Screen Off) or I open an app that I have set to "Enable", "Do nothing" or "Enable/Screen off." Not only will this cut back on your data usage or Wifi usage, it cuts back on Awake time, Wake locks, and battery drain from those items and other issues caused by data usage.
Hopefully this helps you with your JD problems and saves you some battery life, on my Ion I have been able to go for two days without a charge with light to moderate use.

Use juice defender also go to your account syncs and shut off any emails and other accounts that sync then go to app store hit the settings button and set to update over WiFi only

In my country it only supports GSM. so I changed the signal type from LTE WCDMA GSM to "GSM only". And it is super battery saving now. I advise u to use only the required signal type in your country. More of it suck the battery.

Data usage

My data usage has been rising. the day my data renewed, it instantly went up to 10 mb of data used in an hour.

If you go to Settings > Data Usage, you can see which applications use data on your phone. As the notice says, what is shown on the phone is the data measured by your phone, and your mobile provider may account for data usage differently. Still, it may help you pin point which apps consume most of your data. You then may want to delete the apps in question if you don't use them a lot, find replacement apps, or limit data usage for these apps to WiFi only -- to access this capability, an additionnal app will be needed; try searching the Play Store for this kind of tool.

I had the same issue but found the my wifi setting was to turn off in sleep mode, you can adjust this in your settings, it helped to change it to never turn off. Also, in the hidden wifi menu, make sure your wifi is set to on, you can access this by going to your keypad in the phone and typing *#0011#. Staying in wifi as much as possible is great, also, use your data toggle.

While looking at the list of apps using the data, you can tap on the ones you don't want running data in background. A detail menu comes up, at the bottom there is a check box to disable background processes on mobile network.
