Alright, I have a weird one.
PROBLEMS:
First off, the phone won't stay off. If I turn it off, it reboots. If I pull the battery it obviously shuts off, but as soon as the battery is back in, it boots itself up without me touching anything.
But the MAIN problem is that it's... haunted. Without me touching it, the screen will turn on, displaying the home screen before backing out to the lockscreen. When this happens, an icon shaped like a steering wheel appears in my notification bar very briefly. Also, I get some kind of "startup, shutdown" noise, but not one I associate with any program or process I can think of. It's a doo doo DOOT. Then, DOO doo doot.
I don't even have any kind of car mode on this thing.
This happens with such frequency, it's basically a low-key strobelight. I end up pulling the battery because I feel bad for the poor thing flipping out.
WHAT WERE YOU DOING WHEN THIS HAPPENED?:
When this first cropped up, I had just finished using the phone to navigate me somewhere. It was plugged into my car charger, because it had randomly dumped a lot of charge before the trip (while I was napping...), so it was at about 12% battery.
PHONE FACTS:
AT&T SGS3, bought on launch day. Rooted, running Aristodemos III, which is an ICS ROM.
WHAT HAVE YOU TRIED?
Battery pull, turning off the gps, airplane mode, turning off all active processes, RAM dump, waiting, charging, sighing heavily. I haven't been home since this happened, but I will try flashing a new ROM later if I can't fix this - with a full wipe.
Any suggestions??

In all seriousness though, why not just factory reset? Or better yet go to your carriers store, show them, and get a new Samsung galaxy s3/send in for warranty.

Driving mode is indeed off, at least right now. It's probably on when the phone freaks out...
I did a factory data reset, wiped the cache and the dalvik cache, fixed permissions, and then tried installing the Hellfire ROM. No dice as of yet, am getting an "assert failed: getprop" error. I can't plug the phone in to the computer to move files around, either. It just makes the "You plugged in a USB thing!" sound over and over but never lets the phone appear on Windows Explorer. Pretty sure this is a hardware issue at this point, but I'll get this damn ROM working if I can, just to be sure.
I'm not afraid to mess with software, but ugh, I don't know where to start with a hardware problem. Might have to see what the people at Best Buy have to say, since they sold me this phone.

Have you tried using the Odin software in the DEV section and flashing over the stock software with it?

What you need as stated before is a complete factory restore. Not reset.restore. unless you'd rather spend another few days with these problems figuring out what it might be. find ucalg1 and flash via Odin this will fix all your problems. in case you missed the thread here you go:

Assuming that there is no faulty hardware.
I'll try Odin when I get home from work... but I have my doubts, since my computer won't recognize the phone correctly. I can probably replace the micro USB port, though. Haven't found the instructions particular to this phone yet, but I have a few days before the part gets here.
Thanks, guys.
Don't use your car charger again!! I've had this with 2 Samsung phones. My S2 and Skyrocket. Both of them have damaged micro usb ports because of a Rocket fish car charger.
Luckily I caught the problem and my S3 wasn't damaged.

Okay, so I got Odin to work, but I still can't connect my phone to my PC while it's awake. XD Just while it's in Download Mode. No more repetitive "USB in!" noise, just "Device not recognized." But whatever, I flashed ucalg1, installed the newest ClockworkMod, used Dropbox in the browser to put get Hellfire and the relevant CM gapps on the internal SD, wiped everything, and installed those with the now-effective CWM.
Good news is that I have Hellfire now. Yay Jellybean.
The bad news is that it's still randomly waking itself up with the car mode notification like before, AND it won't stay off, AND trying Titanium Backup's shiny new zip feature created a brand new problem where I get random popups telling me certain processes have stopped. Going to mess with that some more. Odin sure didn't fix it.
But at least it's usable as a phone right now, and maybe when/if I replace the micro USB port, some of this madness will stop.

Ha, actually the Rocketfish charger died last month. I've been using a random microUSB cable and a car-to-USB adapter I had lying around. If you're right, though, I might need to get a new cable.

Well, from Aristodemos, I used ClockworkMod to restore to an old Nandroid backup (some other ROM), then went stock with Odin, then went Hellfire. And Hellfire is CM10-based.

1) I have cm7
2) I downloaded Kernel Manager and downloaded and flashed the latest Tiamat kernel.
After that, my battery will not charge. I have an all in one charger that I can use in my car or plug into an outlet (from Sprint). When I plug in the charger, a light comes on so that I know it's plugged in. However, when I plug it into my phone it won't charge AND it turns off the light on the charger. Luckily I have a coworker that has an EVO and my charger works just fine with his phone.
I've rebooted several times, which is killing my battery. I tried to just flash a new kernel, but now I kept getting errors that flashed too quickly for me to read. I thought, Hey I'll uninstall and re-install. So I uninstalled and tried to open the Market and now I'm getting network errors and can't connect through anything. I'm down to 37% so I can't flash the new cm7.1.
Yes, I'm a n00b but I have researched and Googled and I can't find anyone with the same problem. Feel free to tell me to throw my phone out the window, but I'd really appreciate some help. Even if it's "Take out your SD card and flash cm7.1 when you get home."
TIA.
*EDIT: Thanks for everyone's help. It looks like it is a hardware problem (bad pins). I went back to stock and unrooted so Sprint can fix it/give me a new phone.
Have you taken out the battery, and let it sit out for maybe a good solid minute, then try to charge? it worked for me on the random time it happened, and make sure its plugged into a wall outlet, not a usb port, ect.

I'm defintely just using my wall/car charger since my usb cable is at home.
I left it out for two minutes and I still have the same problem.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Well first try letting the battery cool down just turn off your phone for like 15 min. And see if that works.
If that dont work try this and since you use kernel manager try this.
1.go into the settings of kernel manager and turn off the setting for auto flashing.
2.download the godmode kernel towards the bottom of the list.
3.steel your friends battery with his permission since your running out.
4.boot into recovery and wipe cache/dalvik.
5.(now I take it your in clockwork and not amon since you running cm7 so I'm not sure what you click to do this since unused amon) but go to flash a zip from SD card and look for a folder on the root of your SD called kernel-manager then go to the toastcfh folder and flash the godmode-v9 zip that's in there. Its a great kernel the was made for use with cm7 + all other aosp so it should work. Post your results if it did or didn't work

Did you make a backup before flashing? If so, flash the nandroid and reflash the kernel.
Also, try downloading the kernel to your computer from its respective website, transfer it to your phone, then flash.

What I would try is download the kernel from the dev section [could have gotten a bad flash], then try that.
Also, try another battery in your evo, like you co-workers, because you battery could be super drained and it'll have to be jumped at a sprint store; or leave in on the charger for a few hours and see if it turns on.

I did not backup because I am stupid and was having trouble trying to flash it in recovery (my power button wasn't working as "select", it was just turning my screen off). But I have titanium back up and I didn't flash cm7 so long ago that I would mind flashing the nandroid or a new ROM.
I can't flash right now because my battery is now a very sad 22% and I'm pretty sure my coworker isn't going to lend me his battery. I also don't have my data cable with me so I can't do anything between my phone and computer until I get home.
This is really ****ing with my happy hour plans.

I'm going to try leaving it on the charger to see if it is just the light that is going bonkers with my phone. While the phone was off (after pulling the battery for 10-15 minutes), I plugged in the phone and it turned it on. That's a good sign that it recognized the charger, right?
My coworker isn't going to let me use his battery.

So after my coworker let me charge my battery enough to make it to the Sprint store, they charged it up to about 70% and I wiped and flashed GodMode. All better! It got stuck in a boot loop so i had to reboot but then it was fine. Thank you!
Completely unrelated, but now Launcher Pro Plus is throwing an error and force closing upon start up.

Glad you got it working, and is it just lagging, like not swiping when moving screens or opening the app drawer? if so lock the device, wait a second, then unlock again. Also check your minimum frequency.

It's just whenever I boot up my phone, the very first time it just doesn't work and force closes. As long as I don't turn off my phone, it's fine (mabe a bit laggy, but that's it).
So now that i have been home, my data cable charges my phone just fine (though, it did take longer than usual). I'm at work again, and my charger still doesn't charge my phone! It charges my coworker's phone but not mine. SO WEIRD!

That occasionally happens, where it may take launcher pro an extra minute to load, make sure its on the internal memory to make it the fastest.
And that is weird, I would have suggest you may have been using a bad outlet or cable, but no reason for it to charge one phone and not the other. Its possible you could have a bad usb port, so I'd take it to sprint and see what they say.
So I took it to Sprint and they say I need to go back to stock and unRoot before they will work on my phone. :/
They tried different wall chargers and none work, but USB cables work as long as they are plugged into a computer or AC adapter.
Do I try flashing a different ROM? do I restore my NAND backup from before I rooted? Do I just rely on my data cable to charge my phone and deal with it? UGH.
And now I will never know if i messed my phone up with the kernel flashing business or if it was a true hardware problem.

I think it may be hardware. I only use the data cable via usb, or use the adapter for the wall outlet, and never had a problem.

I'm having the same problem on rooted stock rom. It's getting more and more frequent. The phone just refuses to come back on after going to sleep. If I plug in the power/usb cable, it actually makes the connected noise as if it's actually awake but the screen stays off.
I've uninstalled all cpu and memory tweaking apps and am still experiencing the issue.

im starting to think it is a phone issue myself, going to find out Tuesday when my new one arrives though i am hoping it was an error on my part because this phone has the chance to be fantastic.
I was having random shutdowns with my 1st phone, the thing is I never did have stock long enough (rooted after 45min of gettjng) to see if it was the phone or root/rom(s).
My second phone is working great without any random shutdowns, but I'm still stock(running on second day of testing).
Gonna root and flash tomorrow and hope everything remains the same if not back it goes before my remorse period ends.
I really think it's phone related rather then a rom because I've never had this problem with previous phones.
So I would suggest on exchanging it.

i do appreciate the feed back, and from everyone who did give it. after lots of research and back and fourth between stock and custom roms i definitely wanted it to be the rom so it was fixable but im about 96% sure its the actual phone its self.
So, lately my phone has been acting kinda weird.. Basically, it'll shut off on it's own, no matter what my battery level or if I'm on the charger, its pretty random. When I go to turn it on, it shows me the samsung logo and shuts off after about 3 seconds of the galaxy s3 logo. It does the same in download mode and recovery. The phone will stay off and do that for an hour or more, and then itll turn on and be all dandy again for hours or at least another day. I'm going to take off all my pictures on the sdcard and odin back to stock as soon as possible for warranty, but does this sound like a hardware failure or software? I read about the s3 sudden death syndrome, but this one isnt permanent. Any ideas?
I agree with your assessments.
I'd wonder about overheating or a bad battery.

It might be the kernel that came with the ROM you installed. I used to have problem with ktoon kernel.
I'm running Darthstalker XI, the problem happened with both the stock kernel and the faux samsung kernel. The battery is fine, its completely flat with no bumps or humps. I managed to turn it on once yesterday but as I was getting ready to transfer over the files the phone shut off and didn't start again. I'll try to get it running tomorrow.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, the problem happened when I dirty flashed XI over X. Afterwards I did a wipe and clean install of X1 and the problem persisted. Has anyone else on Darthstalker/UDVLJA based roms had this?
EDIT2: Well after being on the charger all day, I noticed that the green samsung battery icon was on the screen, something it only does when it's about to turn on properly. I instantly pulled out the sdcard and put the latest cm10 nightly and gapps on there and I booted to recovery, wiped, and flashed them right up, no issues.
If you have an app that controls kernel voltage that is still set up for set on boot and the voltage is too low when it boots or is granted root it'll kill it in this manner. Otherwise your phone is [email protected]#

I'd wager that if any overclocking/undervolting was done, it was disabled at the onset of problems. OP seems smarter than orangutan.
I used the phone for work, not play, no overclocking was done neither was any undervolting. I ran stock kernel settings.

I remember a time when XDA had helpful answers and users weren't reduced to insults. I've been around a couple years, hacked more phones than I can count and flashed hundreds of roms in my days, back when everything was still done in adb and terminal emulator. It's no wonder a lot of decent user has started moving over to rootzwiki
Okay, I have some problems with my S3. Running on task650's AOKP 4.2.2 Jellybean and Ktoonsez's KT747, for some information.
I found that I pretty much cannot charge my phone for any reason whatsoever. I plug in the USB, doesn't charge. Wiggle it around, plug it back in, charges for a bit, then disconnects once again. Even then, when it stays connected, the charging speed is just incredibly slow.
I have done a complete wipe, flashed ROM and everything again, and this issue persists. However, another issue arrive: I get a beeping, cracking sound from the speakers when I play games. It sounds almost like popping. I'm not sure if it's like this right after I flash it, but when I restore data, that is what happens.
I have considered having a shop take a look at my phone, but my phone is rooted and stuff, thus removing warranty. Is it true that you get warranty back if you revert to stock and unroot? If so, I would kindly ask for someone to direct me somewhere for help, as I just joined and am fairly clueless.
Has anyone ever experienced these issues? Is there a way to fix this, or should I bring it in to a shop?
i'm assuming you've tried another usb cable and/or are using the one that came with the phone? when did this issue begin? before or after rooting/flashing? it could also be the connector in the device.
when you restore data, are you restoring system data?
there's a link in my signature that details unrooting procedures near the bottom of post #2. check it out for the sake of checking it out.

These cords are cheap and that's how the act when they are dying. Is the poping audio a known bug with tasks 4.2.2.?

Yes, you assume correctly. It started after my phone died once... My phone has been rooted and on AOKP for months with no problem. Sure, I always had battery drain issues, but tolerable. Now, I've gotten 3% charge in 2 hours.
Odin back to stock and factory reset with beer's guide. See if it persists. You can easily return to stock for warranty

Also, Beer, I restore system data, but the popping sound started after I just restored user data. And what do you mean by the connector in the device? That could be the cause of the problem?
Alright, I'll see. If it does, what should I do? Send it in to Samsung, or go to a AT&T place?
When I used the latest Liquid Smooth rom it also gave me a popping type sound when i play a game. But after reverting back to an older rom, the sound was fine. Could be cause of the latest kernel. =/

do you always restore system apps/data? i've seen lots of users with device issues because they do this. not saying its the cause of your problems, just passing the information along
by connector i mean the actual usb port on the device.

Sasuke: Quite possibly, because after I went back to my 3/13 backup, it was perfectly fine. I don't think the 3.4 Linux was out yet, was it?
Beer: I normally never restore system, as I knew it would cause problems, discovered by experience. Then I read that if it's the same ROM, then it would be fine. I never had a need to restore anything anyways, it started after I did a wipe to see if it would solve the issue of not charging. Oh, I see, then yes, there's a possibilty that that's it.
Before flaming me... notice I've been a member since 2009 with my G1, and also notice that I've barely posted. I mostly read, search, and follow instructions.
I am having a problem that I've never seen before through all the Android's I've had. It's SIMILAR to one's I've seen, but NOT the same. I'm hoping someone can take a minute to give me ideas.
The other night I installed TWRP 2.6.0.0 via GooManager... when I chose "reboot recovery" from inside GooManager just to see what had changed and then the following happened........................
My GS2 will NOT boot up. Will NOT charge. Will NOT go into recovery... however it WILL GO INTO DOWNLOAD (ODIN) MODE. I've bricked phones before... never once have I been able to access DL mode. HOWEVER: I cannot get the PC (ODIN, ADB, GS2 Toolkit, Keis) to recognize the phone in download (or any) mode. When I try to boot the phone unplugged the Samsung logo will flash up quickly then the screen goes blank. Typically I'd see Deviant Development or Cyanogenmod Boot Anim at this point but NOTHING. Just goes black. Same result for manually trying to boot into recovery. When plugging the device in while powered off, I will get an empty battery with "waiting/busy/thinking" circle inside of it for a second then it also goes blank.
What I've tried:
-uninstalling Samsung USB drivers and reinstalling (both versions i could find in my PC and online- v1.3.2200.0 and 1.5.14.0 or something close to those)
-uninstalling Keis and reinstalling in combo with the Samsung drivers
-uninstalling all traces of drivers from anywhere and seeing if Windows Update would notice it
-different USB cables... about 9
-other Samsung Android phones in DL mode (windows immediately recognizes them and installs necessary drivers)
-CRC QD Electronic Cleaner inside USB
-took apart phone, gently cleaned with alcohol and insured no loose pieces
-tried with no battery inserted
-probably other's I've forgotten by now
I'm begging and willing to pay at this point for the person who helps me fix my phone. I cannot afford a new one. Samsung and T-Mobile are not willing to do anything for me. I'm pretty good with Android, and with using ADB for simple tasks. If it's possible to have happened- it honestly seems like the Recovery and OS got deleted. Either that or the USB port has gone bad but no tabs are bent inside and all "looks" fine.
Again, a CASH reward is being offered to the person who helps me FIX this. How much $ will be considering how much work it takes for the individual(s) to help fix it.
Did you try different USB ports? Or a different computer?

A lot of people have had trouble updating through goo. Some in this thread discuss it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768742
All seem to solve their problem with Odin though. Make sure you're on Odin 1.85, I used 1.84 by mistake once and it kept failing and once crashed my computer. Also make sure to deactivate Kies, Odin won't work with it running. Sometimes we miss basic stuff when we're stressing!

Just read a little more of your post here is how u can fix it and its very simple, the thing is goomanager has been a little f'd up lately, its been softbricking ppls phone since 2.6 came out, u need to go here http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules and download twrp 2.6.0 tar file, turn off or uninstall kies, odin will never connect or see the phone if kies is running, even if in the background odin will never see the phone if kies is abywhere near it, and kies wont see it because its modified software wise, now open Odin file and run the app, put the Hercules into DL mode and connect to PC with your factory OEM USB cable, Hercules doesn't like any other cable with Odin for some reason, Odin should say "Added" once it does click on the PDA box- DONT CHECK ANYTHING ELSE, find the tar file u downloaded from the link i put above, the click start, Odin should take about 1min to do its thing, do not dissconect the phone at all until Odin gives the green "passed" signal in upper box, Odin will auto reboot ur device and that should've fixed it, if not u may need to flash another rom bit don't worry all easy fixes, I can't stress how important it is to not panic in these situations, follow what I said and ur herc will be good as new, no I don't want the money, just forward the help to the next person...
I'm about to try this. Let it rest a few days. I will go into the PC and remove kies and all its traces... I have tried many times without it installed and still it won't recognize the phone. Even with the 3 OEM cables I tried. I do use Odin 1.85 and have a few tar laying around I would have used had I got a connection. Other galaxy phones and my wife's captivate glide are recognized as soon as I plug them in. I just feel like it is more than it is letting on to. Like ... something as stupid as could the battery be bad. Would it cause this. Did a jig for my i897 mess up my USB port or motherboard. I'm just so upset. Using a crappy $20 phone and it sucks bad. Thanks to all who have helped so far. Going to take a few more stabs at it.

That is very strange indeed then, I can't think of any other task reason as to why it wouldn't recognize the device, if kies isn't installed and ur on OEM cable and drivers are installed that's very strange indeed I don't think I've ever run into an issue like that, I do know goo has been fing ppls phones up lately but I also heard they got it fixed so Im lost, I mean theoretically it could be the battery but it still doesn't make sense because u should get done response even with no battery, let me look into it a little more, now I'm interested, pm me if u figure it out or any new info this struck an itch in my brain lol sorry to hear about the herc, I lost mine for a whole day due to a bad Odin flash once and was freaking out cuz I had to use my old precedent so I feel for u, just doesn't make sense...

GUYS I'VE TRIED EVERY POSSIBILITY WITH KIES. Anything that Kies could give me right now in this state (aka: one of 2 things... install drivers 50 times or 'emergency firmware upgrade' which requires an acknowledged connection to PC and a screen that is similar to the DL screen but indeed is not the DL screen...) i have tried. that's why i went through the hassle of making this post... if it were a basic, every-day NooB problem i would have fixed it already...
sorry if that sounds trollish but i took the time i did writing the "issues/what i've tried" in the original post for a reason. this goes far beyond what Kies can do for me. thank you very much for the help though, much obliged!

Haha I'm STILL thinking about it lol, like u I've been building and hacking software for around ten yrs now, and also like u I've never just been stuck, I've bricked devices and still brought them back, even applied the unbrickable mod to my captivate and never have I just not been able to explain what was going on lol, I help whenever I can because I may be the one asking for help someday, this issue u have though is very perplexing, it can't be the port if the phone still goes into DL mode, but then why is it not able to connect? The PC should see something, even a hard brick gets noticed by PC as being there, can't get a flashable connection but the pc still sees it, I've been working this over for 2 days now lol, I am trying for u buddy lol

btw, something weird... once i created the new account on my PC and tried different cables, when trying my HTC EVO 4G (old school) cord i got the "duh-dum" from windows as if it knew i plugged my device in- however it didn't pop up with "installing device driver software" nor show up in Device Manager anywhere... i got it to make the sound on/off maybe 3 times in half an hour.
so... to tease your brain even more... why would ONLY the HTC cord make it do that and why wasn't anything "happening" in the pc? even driver manager (freeware) doesn't do anything.

so... to tease your brain even more... why would ONLY the HTC cord make it do that and why wasn't anything "happening" in the pc? even driver manager (freeware) doesn't do anything.

That's very strange lol, so it only made the connection sound when using the HTC cord? Now that I can't explain lol, but, I'm trying to recreate ur issue on another device, I'm going to figure it out lol it's like that proverbial itch u just have to scratch lol, so even with the connection sound from windows the device is still not seen anywhere? Uuughh

HAD to throw that in there didn't you... the fact that yours is still working hahaha jk.
anyhow like i said its awesome you're thinking about it and trying for me. really appreciate that. and i agree- never seen anything like that. ready to start waving cash wads around hahaha. you're exactly right though- example here:
take out battery, insert battery, press volume hardware keys to get into download and plug in charging cord.... it shows me samsung and just starts rebooting and vibrating every 2 seconds until i let go and unplug....
take out battery, insert battery, press volume hardware keys to get into download and plug in USB cord... goes into "blah blah blah press volume up to continue to download, press volume down to restart device" so i obviously hit UP and it goes into download. it HAS TO know im connected to the computer.
there's a chance it just reads how much voltage is coming into the USB and determines whether or not to go into DL mode- i've seen that before. just wish i had another PC here to try on.
about ready to give out my LogMeIn info and let people see im not crazy hahaha

Oh I believe u lol I've seen some unbelievable stuff before, just never like this, and yes I guess it could be acting like a jig but then where are u getting the 301k to jump it lol believe me I had my herc for a day, went to root it and Odin failed halfway through bcuz I forgot to disable kies, which led me to " firmware upgrade encounter an issue, please select recovery in kies and try again" for two days because it wouldn't connect and that's the only screen it would boot to, ugh had to use my old zte merrit, ugh that sucked, so I feel for u buddy, have u tried different PCs? I can't think of any other reason, if u have no other way u could JTAG it, I know I know but as a last alternative, I got a buddy with a box, I'm trying to recreate it on a galaxy precedent but all I've gotten so far was a few soft bricks I can't figure out why its not being seen as anything, there should be something there, somewhere, even if it only sees the qualcom chip something should be seen with PC...

yeah... ive been thinking about that. on the other hand im thinking that $400 isnt that much money and i'd really like an upgrade lol. id LOVE a Note 2 or GS4... but that takes time and patience and saving for a couple weeks... therein lies the problem haha. this guy right here has limited patience.
keep plugging away at it (no pun intended) and let me know if you have any new ideas.
