SOD and JellyBean roms Problem - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've just modded a friend's kindle.
I installed the FFF 1.4a bootloader and TWRP 2.2.2.1, followed by a Jellybean Rom (Jandycane).
I transferred about a gig of apps and media, and whilst transferring the kindle went into SOD.
I thought nothing of it and tried again with the same result.
So I then flashed (factory reset/ wipe cache/ wipe dalvik/ wipe system/ first)
"Unofficial AOKP Jellybean Milestone 1" followed by "Paranoid Android" (always wiping first).
Both these roms go into SOD whilst transferring via USB.
I'm now going to try an ICS rom (glazed).
I really wanted to give him the latest OS....
Is this an issue with all JB roms?
or am I missing something? (a tweak or mod, perhaps?).
Thanks

No maybe you should try SGT7 by twa_priv http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778010 .

Thanks for that, downloading it now, and will flash later, and let you know how I got on.
I have just tried it with the "Glazed ICS" rom and had the same problem....
I'm just trying the "AOKP Milestone 6 ICS" at the moment.
Maybe it's his kindle...

Downloaded and tried it, but still the same SOD problem (it only occurrs during USB transfer), over both Jellybean and ICS roms
I can't give my friend anything with any issues, he's not a tech-head, and likes stuff to just work.
I have also tried the "Gr9.2-update-modacocustomrom" and it (of course) works absolutely fine...
Also I noticed that the USB transfer was at least twice as quick on the Modaco rom.
So now I'm going to try CM7 based roms...

After you flash the Rom and get everything set up, boot into twrp and mount usb. Transfer your stuff over while mounted like this, it will transfer more quickly and not crash during transfer.

Thanks for your reply, I have in fact been using this method...
However I'm not setting this up for me, I could live with that or just transfer stuff via a file manager over wifi.
The guy I'm setting it up for, is clueless when it comes to tech, and I really would'nt want him messing with recovery, and the file manager way, will be too difficult for him.
I think I'm just going to install the rooted OFW and some apps and have done with it...
I have tried at least 5 JB roms and 3 ICS roms now, all with the same issue (at least on this device).
Is this a known issue? or just an issue with this particular device?
Thanks

I think you must be right, It's not something I've really come across in the forums...
Which is why I asked.
I don't think I've done anything wrong, I rooted, Installed a recovery, then a bootloader, then a custom rom.
I wipe cache, dalvik, system, and factory restore, between each rom flash.
However it's still definately happening on both JB and ICS roms (not the modded kindle firmware).
I guess it's a hardware issue to this particular device.
I've kind of got round it by installing the Modaco custom (kindle) rom, and using a seperate launcher (ADW). It's not Jellybean, but it's a reasonable alternative, especially since my friend is not all that tech-savvy, and would be expecting a bag of jellybeans, if I told him that was the firmware....

Actually, Josepho1997, the SOD is a pretty common problem with large file transfers when not using mounted TWRP. At least with sgt7/cm10 by twa_priv. I don't know about other JB ROMS, but I didn't think that ICS ROMS had that problem. I can't remember what it is, and not everybody experiences it, but if you have anything larger than a couple hundred megs of stuff top transfer, it is highly recommended that you use TWRP for your transfer.

My kindle does the same thing, on jandycane and aokp milestone. I just transfer via wifi.
Cheers

Well, I've encountered exactly same problem with all the JB and ICS roms that I have thrown at it (about 8), which, exactly as you said, after a few hundred mb, just crashes (SOD).

TWRP and wifi both worked fine on all roms, I just needed a foolproof rom, for non-tech person (that only knows have to transfer stuff via USB).
In the end I flashed the modded Kindle firmware, and installed Espier launcher to make it as simple as possible....
I know it loses all of the JB goodness..., but It works fine with USB, and is great for a noob, that is'nt concerned about what OS he's running.

Why not use MTP?

Just copied a 1.08gb avi to the kindle and it worked

[ROM] Stock rooted 6.3

In keeping with my tradition of providing stock rooted ROMs, I've re-packaged the new 6.3 update. As with my past ones, this is completely stock except for modifications that provide root access. It does not attempt to block OTAs in any way, and it does not contain any extras like the Market.
This is a full ROM, not an incremental update, so it will wipe your /system partition when installing. If you're coming from a non-stock ROM you'll want to wipe data/cache, but if you're coming from a previous stock ROM you should be okay. This is tested in CWM (it's what I have onhand right now) but TWRP should also work.
Changes between this and a completely stock 6.3 ROM are:
REMOVED FROM ROM
The new /system/bin/check_rooted binary
Stock recovery image
Stock bootloader image
That goofy userdata-backup.zip
ADDED TO THE ROM
Superuser
su
busybox
CHANGES
Removed the entry from init.omap4430.rc that ran check_rooted at boot.
Set ro.secure=0 so adbd runs as root (insecure boot version only)
updater-script doesn't attempt to install recovery, bootloader, or userdata-backup.zip file since they are not in the ROM.
updater-script won't check your /system partition's size before installing. This means it will install on a /system partition that's been resized, but I have not tested this. My assumption is that if you resized /system you'll know how to handle any errors that you may encounter.
I'm providing secure and insecure boot images, as with my past versions. For those unfamiliar, insecure means adbd runs as root on your Fire so you get a root shell when you use adb to connect (i.e. you get # by default). Secure gives you a user shell (the $) by default, but you can still use 'su' to elevate to root.

I would say probably yes since it's mostly stock, but I've never tried so I can't say for certain. Worst case should be that you bootloop, at which point you can always go back into recovery and wipe data, too.
Perhaps the dumb question, shall I just download and flash it by TWRP like other CM Roms? Please excuse I am noob. Thank you

I've had CWM (and TWRP, actually) refuse to mount my cache partition in the past, and rebooting generally fixed it for me. Not sure if that's what's happening to you, though.

I recently repartitioned my KF following the guide you posted using the GNU parted method. What I did was increased my media storage and shrunk my cache partition to 350MB and userdata partition to 700MB, would those settings affect CWM in anyway? The other thing I noticed was after I get the error, I reboot and check the CWM folder to see if anything did save, and it looks like it doesn't compress the back up while saving it. I found a partial back up of 2.35GB after the error. This is a strange one
Update: okay figured it out. The problem was CWM was trying to back up the /sd-ext volume. I unchecked it in the advanced back up option and ran the back up without a hitch.

Can anyone confirm that the browser did not update to the newest version?
To access reading view, I was told "At the bottom of the display there is an eyeglass Icon tap it the screen says loading and you will have the view. Back arrow out of it."
I don't see an eyeglass icon on this rom.

It works for me, but only on certain web pages (I'm guessing ones that are text-heavy). Try viewing some random Wikipedia article, for example. The icon also doesn't appear until about a second or so after the page has completely finished loading.
Just bizarre, I am not getting it. I looked at wikepedia articles too. I am using the insecure rom if that makes a difference.
What version should the browser be now?
I have 1.0.13.328_10008910
Gonna go clear data, etc.
Well, heck, that did it. Thanks for that. Interesting feature!
Flashed this succesfully... but i neglected to wipe the system and accidentally flashed the 4.0 gapps package after. Boots fine but i am getting an android.process.acore FC and a Calender session FC. Any suggestions? I came from JC's ICS build and I am thinking of just going back to that.
Update. Nevermind. Just went back to ICS. The Stock Launcher gives me douche chills.
Swype?
Anyone who has Swype working on 6.2.1 or 6.2.2 installed this? If so can you tell me what happened to your Swype and were you able to get it working again?
I'm still on 6.2.1 (updates blocked with Droidwall) and went through so much hassles getting everything working *just* right, I'm trying to decide if the changes in 6.3 are worth potentially having to re-do Swype, market, calendar/contact sync, etc.
Edit: Any hope for an incremental update on this one? I loved the ones for 6.2.1 and 6.2.2.
Edit2: Any issues with market or calendar/contact syncs (for those of us who had set that up)?

Jellybean only boot loop

Hi guys I searched the forums but can't seem to figure this one out. I can flash and boot all ICS Roms completely fine. When I try ANY Jellybean ROM AOKP, CM whatever I get stuck on a boot screen loop. I use these steps:
Flash darkside super wipe
Flash ROM
Flash gapps
Flash darkside super wipe cache
Reboot
Now I've tried cwm 5.x.x and 6.x.x and twrp. Any suggestions?

Ok, I now downloaded 4 different roms ALL Jellybean and ALL get frozen during the bootscreen and bootloop. ADB just sits at waiting for device when trying to logcat. I've reflashed to stock gingerbread just fine, reflashed to ICS AOKP just fine no loops. But going to JB after just keep causing a bootloop, its driving me crazy.

Try switching to TWRP.
Then re-download the JB rom you want to use, put it on the root of your internal SD, make sure the MD5 matches and then try flashing again. I think most of these JB boot problems are coming from CWM recoveries.

I read it on their website but i came across it in binarybishops nightly thread. And no the cache wipe is fixed. I use the touch version, tried TWRP and CWM 5 hell i tried them all! They all produced the exact same results for me as far as performance goes. But ive never had any issues with 6.0.1.1 i love it to death
Ok guys this is very puzzling. I have been flashing roms for years and have never had a loop like this.
So I flashed TWRP again verified the md5 has was correct for both AOKP JB nightly and gapps. Flashed following the correct steps posted in the thread by Whitehawkx and I still get a bootloop freeze on the AOKP unicorn. So I tried CM 10 nightly... same freeze/loop. I downloaded AOKP ICS, no loop at all boots fine.
I've tried cwm 5, 6, and twrp all with the exact same results. I have formated SD external and internal EMMC... nothing has worked.... All I want is some Jelly bean goodness.... I flashed AOKP on my nexus 7 just fine. Like I said I am really stumped on this one as to why ICS roms would flash perfectly fine and using the same steps JB roms bootloop.

It's something wrong with your flash file. Use an actual adapter to transfer the file. And download it again. Then if you still get the loop plug your phone into your computer and boot it up then run adb logcat.

Yes that is usually the norm. But it is millions and millions and millions of bits of data we are talking about here... all it takes is for one of those bits to either not be there or be in the wrong place to screw it up. And yes that is extremely strange, but seeing as you are the only one experiencing this, i am sure its not the ROMs and its something you are doing or not doing. Im not trying to be rude or imply that you are dumb. its just extremely hard to pin point something weird like this when i dont have the device in my hands. See where im getting here?

Odd, I always thought the ROM had everything in it needed.
I have seen on the Atrix where you had to flash twice in a row, because the first time it doesn't see any existing JB files, so it can't install other important files. Flashing the second time works fine because the needed files are copied over on the first flash.
Might be worth a try?

[Q] Having problems upgrading roms

Any time I try to flash a rom or anything I keep getting this message: E:/error opening '/data/lost+found'
I've tried flashing different roms but it hasn't helped.
I'm having this weird problem where when I flash a new rom about 20 random apps are transferred over to the new rom. (like random games and apps)
Also every time I uninstall any app I get "cannot read data/xposed/modules.whitelist"
The app still uninstalls but this just concerns me.
Could anyone help me out? I just want to do a fresh install of liquid smooth.

Wipe everything, data, system, cache and dalvik
Then try reflashing your rom
Ok have you installed any app to sd type of application? It sounds like your internal storage is being read as external and visa versa.
Also i know there's lots of support for twrp but I swear by cwm when it comes to the GS3. I use twrp on my Nexus and that's fine but on the S3 cwm has always worked better in my opinion.
What roms are you trying to flash? They are sprint s3 roms right from this section?

I've done that. That's what the one post suggested.
I just don't understand why I'm still getting apps showing up when I install new roms.
What about wiping storage? I know you don't want to lose anything but it sounds like something in your storage causing this.

Please see my post right above this one I quoted here. Let us know a few of those things and maybe we can get you going in the right direction.

I haven't installed any app to sd type applications.
I do think part of the internal is being used as external but I thought that's just how it was.
I only have roms, nandroids, and titanium backups on my sd card.
I installed twrp because when I first started it seemed like that was what most people were recommending but it doesn't matter to me. I might switch.
Also I've been switching between cleanbean and liquid smooth, both from this section.
The main thing that bugs me is when uninstalling apps says "cannot read data/xposed/modules.whitelist"
The app still uninstalls but it just doesn't seem good.

A couple weeks ago, I was switching from a AOSP ROM to a TW ROM and I got the same error. Thinking it was TWRP, I hooked my phone up to my computer and flashed CWM. I then tried to flash the ROM in CWM and it was a no go. I still got the same error. I just decided to transfer all my data from my internal sd to my computer. I used Odin to flash the stock tar file. After that, I used QBKing77's method to root from recovery. Then I flashed my ROM and I got 0 errors. So all I had to do was start fresh haha. It took a bit of time because I was taking many precautions (as should you) Good luck!

Yes just as posted above, but before going the route of Odin back to stock. Copy all your files (important) from internal and external to your computer. Then boot into recovery no need to change now and reformat your internal and external storage, wipe cache and dalvik and fix permissions and reboot. Then download a fresh zip of a rom to flash and test it. If it all works then go through your files and move back what you need. I'm pretty sure you have a bunch of O folders in your internal.

Missing from device manager?

I have a new problem. I usually know how to fix these kinds of things but this is different. My kindle fire hd is not being detected by my computer at all. There is no noise when I plug it in and there is no kindle device in the device manager. I tried the cyanogenmod recovery for the first time to update my kindle. I installed the cyanogenmod update and I rebooted. It just booted back into the cyanogenmod recovery. It keeps doing this. Is there a fix?
Original Post:
I have been using cyanogenmod for a while but I wanted to move back to stock. Is there a way to revert back? I do not have a backup because I wiped my internal drive and I forgot I had my backup there.

If there is no way to revert back or you suggest not to, what custom rom should I get? I need one for gaming(mainly), surfing the web, and watching videos (youtube, amazon instant video).

I did not because I installed the recovery and cyanogenmod through the cm updater.
I have seen a problem similar to mine but it was for the kindle fire (not hd). They solved the problem by connecting the kindle with ubuntu.
I am going to install a live disk to see if this will work on mine.
Edit: It looks like it is not a driver issue because ubuntu failed at finding the device. I know that my usb is working because it turns my kindle on when it is plugged in. I think that there is no way to fix this because there seems to be no way to connect my kindle to my computer (I have tried different computers). Any help would be appreciated.
