[Q] USB port likely broken, does it require soldering? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I bought a used t989 online, and it's USB port is acting up. When it sits on the charger it will keep firing up beeping noises indicating charger connected/disconnected. I am not able to connect it for data transfer obviously. I try to hold it in every directiong but it has no effect. I assume my USB port is broken. Anything else I should try (I've tried 4 different cables, same behavior)?
How hard is it to replace this part? Does it require soldering? I've found it for sale online here http://www.ebay.com/itm/2X-SAMSUNG-...ro-USB-Charging-Port-/221131664862#vi-content unless anyone knows of a better outlet.
Many thanks

Here you go, hope this helps!

Well thanks, but it was something I hoped to do myself. Are you a rep for MTV? If the price could come down to 25 it would be less of a choice.

Ok.
Hoping someone else can shed some more light onto this. Google and XDA haven't turned up much, but maybe there is a hidden thread that wasn't indexed appropriately. Here's to hoping I can get some help, and that this one will be.

Do those pins indicate the need for soldering?

I'm trying to figure this out myself.
I'm starting to think it does, but I can't seem to make any progress with my soldering iron. I don't know if it's a week iron, or im hitting the wrong spots.
OP- have you any progress?

Any progress?
Wondering if the OP got his port swapped out. If so, did it help?
I have the same problem. Mine wouldn't even charge at first though. I re flowed the solder on the port connections. After that it will charge but not connect to PC.
I'm thinking there may be a bad connection inside the port itself.
Anyone else had this problem?
Thanks

im trying to repair a friend's incredible of mine and he said that ever since he replaced his cracked screen the power button hasn't been able to turn on the phone. So what i did is try to open the phone up myself and see if he is missing any parts from the mobo. If you guys have any pictures of the mobo of this phone it would help me identify what could be wrong.

You're best bet it to try to find copies of the FCC approval teardown. Often, but not always, they're floating around out there.

alright thanks and i actually did figure out the problem. There's a small part missing from the power button that keeps the phone from turning on. I was able to use a small object to poke it and it works. but i will need those fcc approval teardown pics. so thanks for the suggestion

How do you replace USB charging port?

My charging port is fried after attempting to make an at home Y cable to charge and have USB OTG. I see the ports on ebay for just a few dollars, and would love to switch it out, but I dont want to break anything.

Yea, that was my fear. I took the epic apart about half an hour ago and was staring at it trying to see how it might be removed, but didn't want to completely ruin it by guessing. Been searching far and wide to see if anyone has done it on their phone with little success.
sounds like the seller would do it for you for an additional $30 dollars? Just gotta ask yourself, Is it worth it or are you willing to take that chance?
Maybe you can just ask the seller for directions on how to replace it, I'm sure he'd be helpful.

[Q] Phone stopped charging?

My phone just doesn't charge anymore.. I've googled and googled. I found one page where a guy said to push up on the tongue of the port to get it centered, but that didnt help at all. I've tried multiple cords with no luck. So I have two questions. What is better to go to for help. My verizon store? Or talk to them on the phone? And if i do, would i need to return to stock? No wait, 3.. if i do need to return to stock, how would i do that with a dead phone? I posted a question on rootz aswell with no solutions yet, maybe y'all will have some ideas. Thanks ahead!

Had the same problem recently. It's a hardware issue, the only way to fix is to change the board inside the phone than contains the USB port.
And there is unfortunately no way of re-locking the bootloader, since your phone won't get a connection to a computer due to the dead port.
I looked around in an local Android forum and found someone who could fix my phone for a very fair price. The USB board is not expensive, you can get one on ebay for about 10 dollars
Hop this helps.

Thanks for the response, Im chatting with samsung support right now. Do you have the link of the repair guy?

[Q] I fracked up, hard. Bricked.

I hardbricked my S3. I messed up, I know. It was my fault that I didn't notice that the Slimbean was only for the international version. I have been looking online for a solution, but all I'm seeing is that I have to get a new phone. I cannot access Recovery or Download mode with or without the battery in while or while not plugged into the computer. Though, while the battery and SD are out, the charging/notification light will light up when plugged into the computer for about one minute, but that's it. Is there anyway to turn it into Sprint for a new one? It's been under a month. So...any advice?

did you mean to quote me? i was just commenting on him saying he didn't have a soldering gun... i'm not saying if it will work or not, but if he did want to try it, it's a fairly simple object to make, with very simple and cheap tools. i don't have to search to know that it's just a few resistors and a male micro usb plug, maybe 15 bucks for everything including the soldering iron.
if you have insurance you can go to a sprint repair store and get it replaced for free... it usually takes about 2 days for your replacement to come in..

That is what I'm planning on doing tomorrow.
UPDATE: I did get it replaced yesterday. Told me it'd take thirty minutes, went out and got lunch. When I came back, they said they have no clue what happened to it to cause it to fry like it did, so they swapped it out for a new model. I'll root tomorrow when I have more time. I'll stick to what I can find here on XDA now on. Any recommendations for a good AOKP ROM?

I know, foolish. Coming from the OG Evo, I didn't have to worry about seeing if it was American or International and which carrier it was for. I'm being more careful this time.
Call samsung say the phone died and won't come on. They will replace it as long as there is no physical damage. One year manufacture warranty is still valid use it f sprint don't waste your time. Samsung is fast at sending you a new or refurbished phone. I had several phones replaced. They send you a new phone or used phone and a box to send your old one. They don't check for rooting or nothing they just install new software on the phone and send it out to the next person. Now ups is my issue with the entire process, they Just leave it on your door step even if your not home it happened twice thank god no one stole my phone, I thought we were supposed to sign for it but I guess not.

Weak signal after changing USB port.

My phone started acting up about 2 weeks ago. It would not charge all the time and my PC had a hard time staying connected to it. I ordered a new USB port from eBay and installed it. I am getting a weaker than normal signal, but what is really weird is that when I remove the sim card, I still have 1 bar and sometimes 2 bars of signal. I have tried rebooting and pulling the battery. Is there a way to reset my signal meter or something? Maybe I could reflash my ROM? I don't know, does anyone have any suggestions?
Oh and this is the second USB port that I have received from an eBay seller. I sent the first one back for this reason but the new one is acting the same way.

Well as u already replaced the usb again it must not be faulty as I had problem wth the usb 2 and when the servc guy changed it in frnt of me and after fixing it back I got no network as the wire connected to it which is on the right hand corner went kaput as a little force applied by the servc guy resulted in no netwrk and it was fixed replacing the signal reception wire .I hope u get which wire I m talking abt its the thin wire to right of the pcb board dat is attached to the usb port by just pressing it to the usb port on the lower right.
Yeah I know the wire your talking about. I can plug my original USB port back in and it gets a good signal but as soon as I plug the new board in the signal goes to crap again. If I can't get it to work I may just use it as a small tablet and use my nexus 4 as my main phone. Thanks for the help.
Yep, I just put my old USB port back in and got H+ right away. I re-installed the new one, and now I get no service.

A few pieces of information:
- USB has nothing, repeat _nothing_, to do with radio reception levels and adding a "USB port" (I assume that means a additional USB adaptor for your laptop) is not going to change that.
- If your cell phone does not charge properly, or not at all, the very first, and cheapest, thing to check is your USB cable (I had that happen to my daughter and her Blackberry), so try another cable. A short one preferably as I have a fairly long (1.9m or 6'3) one on my desk that is next to useless
- the second thing to check is to plug other USB devices (USB stick, camera, other phone, hard drive, camcorder, whatever...) in that suspected faulty USB port to see if they behave properly or not. If they do, then the port is most probably not at fault.
- If the phone is set to only use GSM, or you have selected manually a GSM cell to attach to, the phone will stay there and monitor the GSM network. You could have 5 bars H+ signal in the home and not know about it (at least all the phones I've used over the years behaved that way).
- You're supposed to be able to make emergency calls with a bare phone, so I would hope you still get reception when the SIM is out.
Finally, and seeing your other posts where you signal that changing "USB ports" changes the radio behaviour of your phone (which I have a very hard time believing), I have to assume there is a communication problem there...
Could you describe a little better, maybe with pictures, what it is you are really trying to achieve, please? Does the phone work fine when _not_ attached to a "USB port"? What do _you_ call a USB port and why do you need the phone to work while attached to it?
If indeed plugging the phone in some USB ports impacts its radio behaviour, then I would assume the phone is FUBAR and should be returned and replaced...
HTH,
François

Back off, man!
Nowhere does it say in the OP you are trying to replace the USB port INSIDE the freaking phone, and I made it abundantly clear that I wasn't sure what you were talking about and assumed laptop USB port. I even guessed I was misunderstanding you and asked for the picture to clarify.
Based on that, I tried to offer advice based on my own experiences with cellular phones both at home and the office. And to bash me like that when it's obvious I'm not a native english speaker is a bit disingenious.
Anyway, however you want to write it, the antenna doesn't plug into the USB port, as you say. Again. The part you bought may accomodate for the connection of both the motherboard and the antennas, it does not mean antenna and USB are interconnected. They are not. The only thing I'll concede is that the amplifier may derive power directly from the power lead in the connector (and why it would do that when it gets it from the battery already?)
that's it for me, feel free to ignore me in the future I won't miss it.

Yeah I say we call peace. I don't like arguing at all. My video is almost done uploading so I will post a link in the next few minutes if you want to look at it.

Me neither, and I get fed up witnessing people getting dragged into meaningless disputes.
About your problem, now that I can visualize it...
I have a Note 2 LTE whose radio stopped working correctly last january, as well as a co-worker's S3 (lab phones). We thought it was a bad manipulation in the phone service menus originally (we had to apply the same to both for work reasons), but that has been ruled out since.
The real reason for the mess up, it seems, the only one left to us at least, is that we were working on a bench with wired radio and had to plug radio leads into the connectors (there are two on the LTE model) to get coverage. Must have broken or changed something within the phone to explain the loss of sentitivity...
Not sure that's going to help, but you may have more than just the USB port flex cable broken on that phone...
I take that back. I now have a clear view with the video and context. I'd say your issue is with your spares. You'll probably have to swap them until you find a good enough one.
good luck
Thanks for the info. I would definitely assume that it was something other than the USB port flex cable if I did not get good signal and data connection with the old USB flex. I've seen people on the galaxy s2 forums that have the same problem as me and have actually cut the original part in half and the new part in half, taped them together, and this worked! I haven't tried that yet. The thing that threw me off is the signal with no sim card. In the USA when you take your sim card out the, the signal meter goes blank, on every phone I've had at least. I know I can make an emergency call to 911 but the signal meter is always blank. This is also true on my nexus 4 when I remove the sim card. Maybe I can find a part with the same rev. # that will work for me. Thanks to everyone for your input.

Thanks for watching my video Frank. That was my first video to make for YouTube. I was starting to think nobody would watch it.
