[Q] Folders remaining open - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Is there a way to set up the folders so that when you use an app in the folder and go back to the home screen, the folder is closed instead of being open? With ICS on the S3, that was possible. There was no need to hit the home button two times to get the folder to close. It was automatically back to the home screen with the folder already closed.
Thanks.

You have 2 choice :
1. After you done with the open folder or app just hit back button not hit home button this will close the current application ( in task manager still show though)
2. Go to system setting/developer options/limit background processors set what you want.( my set at 4) or you can set do not keep activities .

Dock Apps

Hi guys
I would like to know if it's possible to change the default dock apps....
I would like to replace the message app with chompsms' Is it possible without replacing launcher
Yes you can change the dock icons (except applications I think)
I replaced contacts with "Internet" and messaging with "Music". All done with stock launcher.
How?
Long pressing on any of the docked icons and trying to drag them off does nothing, and you can't drag a shortcut from the home screen on to the dock, either?
EDIT: Got it, had to go into applications and then edit from there. I'm such a tool.

Could you be more specific ? I opened "application" and pressing the dock's app now appear "remove" but even if i drag them...they're still there.
Thank you in advance
1. On Home Screen press "Applications"
2. press "menu" and select edit
3. Now you can drag any app into dock position and replace default icons
3. press "menu" again and select "Save"
All done
Sorry for the OT question, but I think it's related. Can you change icons in the TouchWiz launcher, both the 4 buttons in home and in the "applications" menu? That's my only gripe about it, ugly icons.
yeah the 4 icons at the bottom are part of touchwiz which i havent seen away to replace with other icons yet.
Seen people talking about using a different launcher which i assume is related to this in someway but im not to sure.
Resets
If I change my dock apps, it resets when I restart my phone.
Anyone with a solution?
Thanks
is there a way to mod and put a folder instead of 1 app ?

Can I remove the 4 icons at the bottom of my phone?

Hello,
I'm not sure if it is a Samsung thing or not (I'm coming from Sense on a 3D). Can I remove the 4 icons that are always at the bottom or change them?
Yes you can remove them, and yes you can change the "Phone", "Contacts", and "Messaging". You cannot remove the applications icon to my knowledge.
1) Click on the app drawer
2) Press the menu capacitive button
3) Press edit
4) Find the icon you want in your dock, press and hold as you drag it over the icon you wish to replace (in the dock).
5) Press the back capacitive button
If you want to remove them totally (except the app drawer icon)...
1) Click on the app drawer
2) Press the menu capacitive button
3) Press edit
4) Press and hold the icon you wish to remove, and drag it up into the list of apps
5) Press the back capacitive button

Or for ultimate modification, to satisfy your craving for customization try an alternate Launcher.
Launcher Pro
Go Launcher
ADW Launcher
Etc.
Search the Market for these...so much fun to set your phone up the way you want to!
Thanks for the info. I've never rooted an Android before but I think this phone will be sweet once it is rooted.

Good thing about the alternative launchers is that there's no need to root to use them! And you can go back to original state very easily. This is THE SAFEST way to mess with the look of your phone!

Sweet once it's rooted? Ha! This phone is the first android of the 4 i've owned that I don't even feel like I 'need' root. It's that good.
However, as soon as they lose the wifi issue ill be a rooting fool.

or for the minimal in customization and modification try Launcher7.
...I actually paid for that one. I found that I spend so much time customizing my home screens and launchers to make everything 'just right', but, once I have it set up I never use any of it. So I go with Launcher7 because the WP7 interface is bloated, in your way and clunky but the most basic and most essential things are right there...and I actually rarely use anything but that during my day (at work).
Though I've gotta admit that if TW had a 4D app drawer and a few more home-screen transitions (or _any_ other) I don't think i'd bother changing launchers.

Took me forever to figure this out but you have to select "customizable grid" for the view type to be able to change the dock. Then when you're done you can change back and have them sorted alphabetically. That's also where you can put apps in folders and add home pages.

I should have written back that I don't know what the app drawer is or I'm doing something wrong. I have applications always sitting in the bottom right of my screen. I want to move that to the center of page 2 and put my flashlight where applications is always visible now.
Or perhaps there is a way to remove all four or have it pop up like a task bar so it isn't always wasting the bottom portion of any page?

A couple simple things I can't figure out how to do.

My phone is rooted,
How do you multitask? For example if I am using Chrome or the stock browser, how do I switch to a app without exiting the browser? I thought it was long press the back button but it does not work. And how do I change the icons on my lock screen? Ive looked through all the setting and cant find it.
1. Press and Hold the HOME button (the physical button in the middle)
2. Settings --> Lock Screen --> Lock Screen Options --> (press) Shortcuts (not the on / off button .. the word)
If you dont have the multiwindow , you need to update firmware to get it.

Why would multi-task not be supported by my phone? This should be a basic capability with smart phones these days.

That IS multitasking. You're in the browser, then you want to switch to for example the S Note app without exiting (as in closing down/quitting) the browser. You press and hold the home button and select S Note in the app list that pops up. Then when you're done you do the same thing to get back to the browser.
If you're talking about dividing the screen in two and having two apps visible at the same time, that's a different thing, it's called multi-window and is done by pressing and holding the back key, then in the list that pops up, drag for example YouTube and drop it on the top of your screen, then do the same thing again to drag some other app to the bottom of the screen.
If you don't have the multi-window feature, you need to update your firmware.

OK. Forget about the whole update thing. I don't think we're talking about the same thing here.
Long pressing home = list of recent apps
Long pressing back = multi-window app selection bar
If you want a list of apps on your phone, you press the home button once to get back to your home screen, and from there open the app drawer.
Is that what you meant?
Sorry for my original post above, I misread what you said. I thought you were talking about the multi Window feature in note 2 which can be activated by long pressing the back button.
The multi tasking is when you long press the home button, correct. You get the list of recently opened apps. That's how it works and how it always worked.
If you want a customizable pad that's let's you switch to other apps on the fly, then I highly recommend SwipePad. You can find it in the market and it's free.

For me
Long pressing Home= list of only recently opened apps (not all the apps on my phone).
Long pressing back= does nothing on my phone when I long press it.
Long press home button gives you a list if recently opened apps, yes. That's how it works. It doesn't, in any version of android, give you a list of all installed apps in your phone. I don't know where you got that idea.
Second, if you want the multi Window feature (which opens when you long press the back button) then check OTA update. If there are no updates for you, then wait for it in the future.

To open any other app on your phone, just press Home button and then run any app you wanted, and if you want switch back to your last app long press Home.
If you still dont get it, than search in youtube for Android multitasking.

Funny. I've just set this up myself.
Instructions:
1. Download and install the following app: TurnOff
2. Open the app and the test button, then make it a device admin.
3. Now open Nova Settings and go to Gestured and Buttons.
4. Select the desired gesture.
5. Go to the Shortcuts menu and select TurnOff.
Now go to home and test the gesture!

This in theory should work but didn't. For some reason, I can't choose turnoff in gestures under shortcut. It just turns off the screen whenever I choose it but it doesn't apply the command to the gesture. I can however choose activities under shortcuts > turnoff the screen > turnoff the screen(locker activity). This option works but when I wake up, it takes me to the turnoff app screen.
Are you able to make it work???

Help - cannot move icons or create folders on home screen

Hi,
I have had my Tab S 10.5 for a couple of weeks now and cannot seem to find out how to move/rearrange icons on the home screen or create folders and move icons into them.
I have a Note 3 that has a soft menu button for the Home Screen but I cannot find how to display this when on the Home Screen of the Tab S.
If I long hold on the home screen I get a highlighted home screen and Wallpaper and Widgets option at the bottom.
If I long press on an icon on the home screen I get the usual 'Tap Edit to resize widgets, and reposition widgets, shortcuts, and folders.
I have searched this forum and Googled for this issue but cannot find anything, please help?
Thanks
One way I know to create folders on my Tab S 8.4 is to create them in the Apps list, then drag it onto the Home Screen. Then you can hold-drag your Home Screen icons to move/rearrange the icons and organise into the folder as usual. The 10.5 can't be that different to 8.4?

I can create a folder in the Apps list and drag it to the home screen, but when I hold-drag on an icon I just get the message 'Tap Edit to resize widget etc etc ....'
I contacted Samsung live chat and they got me to to try a few things and advised a long hold on the home screen should display the menu but I don't see it, so they then told me to take it to the Samsung store in Sydney or a repair centre in Granville which are not close to where I live at all.
If I cannot find a fix I will have to take it back to JB HiFi for a replacement, only 2 weeks old so shouldn't be a problem.

Samsung Australia is forced to remove the behaviour from TW, due to patent lawsuit that Apple won in Australia.
If you wish to fix it, you can flash a non Australian firmware with Odin to return the functionality.
Of course a simpler and better suggestion is to load a better launcher like Nova, which is faster and far more functional & customizable than TW anyway.
Please can you tell me what functions have been removed as I get a similar message on my Note 3 but can press the Menu button to access Edit and Create a folder etc?
The Tab S doesn't have a Menu Button, is there a long press to get the Menu option to appear?
Thanks

Possibly your device need a Factory Reset, sounds like it's behaving unusually, because tap and hold an icon intuitively should allow you to move the icons around that page or to the other pages. You said you have researched throughout the forums (and that I haven't seen anyone else with this issue), it may be it's an isolated issue on your tab.
Although, long hold on home screen also does not give me that option on this Tab S and I think on the Tab PRO as well. Same thing when I press and hold the left capacitive button (the task manager button), all I got are Wallpaper, Widgets, and "Remove" trash can.
My suggestion is still Factory Reset before you return the device, unless you still prefer in doing so.

Oh wow, didn't know about that. So silly that Apple.
Anyway, the Task Manager button (left capacitive button, left side of the fingerprint scanner / Home button), which where the usual Menu button used to be, if you tap and hold it, it will behave like a Menu button. See if it's working or whether Australia's firmware is forced to remove that as well, lol.

I believe 3 changes exist on Australian firmware, you cannot edit or change the dock icons, the Samsung Gallery Autorotate doesn't work (the grey rotate icon is greyed out), and It's often been said that camera shutter sounds cannot be disabled, although that may be a global thing.
It was recently mentioned that an update to the Samsung Galaxy S5, had recently again enabled the dock icons to be edited, but I haven't seen any other devices mentioned with a similar update.

So no mention of the Edit menu being taken away from the Home Screen then, or not being able to move icons on the Home Screen.
I have tried doing a factory reset and still have the same issue, is there nobody else in Auz who has seen this issue?
If I long press on the left button next Home all I get is Wallpapers and Widgets at the bottom, no menu to creature a folder etc.
I don't mind using a launcher but I am sure I should be able to move icons and create folders on the Home Screen with the Samsung setup on the Tab S.
Should I be take it back for a replacement?

When you do this, you don't get these options?

Wow that's a bummer
Well, I also get the Wallpaper and Widgets at the bottom and Remove on the top when I long press the left soft button.
Another thing I would suggest is visiting a store that has tab on display that you can play around with, testing the missing "Create Folder" selection when long pressing the Home Screen.
If they behave the same, then TW is broken for Australia ROM
Not much can be suggested other than what's already been suggested... flashing other stock ROM from different region... or wait till Samsung workaround that ban... which could be never. Sorry, Man.

figured it out!
I had the same problem but have figured it out. If you go into your apps screen there's a list of options on the top right represented by 3 verticle dots. Click on the dots and one option is to create a folder. The folder will open in the apps section but you can then drag it to your home screen and use as normal. If you delete the folder from your apps page it will still stay on your home screen. Good luck!
