Help with developing software

Hi,
I am new to android and wanted to know of there are any sites, resources and tutorials to get started with developing android apps. I have downloaded all the tools and have played around with the samples and created my hello world app.
I have no previous experience with Java or programming apart from a little Qbasic and html knowledge but I am very technical and would love to start learning.
Also anyone who has some advice about how long it might take to become comfortable with Android would be helpful.
Any help much appreciated
Since you have no java experience, might want to try signing up for access to Google App Inventor to start with.
In the meantime, your best bet is to buy a book on general java programming, since most Android development books assume a basic knowledge of Java.

Dave

[Q] Booking system app for Windows Mobile

Hey guys
I'm an entrepreneur from Brisbane, Australia. I'm looking into introducing a new product and am wondering if you guys would be able to help me clarify a few questions. I have to add I have no idea what so ever about programming languages or whats possible or not. I just going to post my vision of the application I will need and hope some of you guys can tell me what of that will be possible, what not and how much effort / money it would take to realise.
Firstly of all and most importantly I need the the Phone application to work with several other systems which would be at the moment : - Iphone, Facebook, Windows Mobile, Blackberry Android, a Website interface, Windows Vista / 7 and Mac OS. I need this to work in two ways. One for the user to sync their data on different apps and secondly for the admin to receive and send data from the main system (that would be working on Windows or Mac)
On first interface the user would have to log in with a username and password, high security would be welcome, after the log in the general interface should be offering the user a booking request form with the ability to use a saved lists of items which have been previously use / prepared but also a interface for add one or editing
It also should offer a open bookings lists and the ability to edit this lists. This should also be able to be synced to the other systems. A third interface showing a history and updates should be also available.
If possible it should offer different accounts and groups where admins can edit the bookings of other users. If this is possible it also should offer a control for the admins which shows bookings and history of other group users.
I would like this obviously to be a professional looking app which offers a good service and is secure and bug free. If anyone has an idea if this is realisable or what parts of it would be difficult or have to be changed please do me the favour and comment.
Thank you for your help in advance.

What we need to do...

Hello,
I just got my kin two the other day but have been doing research on hacking it for a couple of weeks now. I am no hacker or programmer but do have some knowledge. I think we need to look at things in a couple of ways based on what I have been seeing in regards to what is working and what isn't.
The most promising thing I have seen so far is a zune hack. This phone is basically a zune with a phone. Windows CE and Tegra APX 2600. I was also successful in viewing the files on my kin two in windows explorer as a flash drive using the same hack that was available for the Zune. The Zune has been jailbroke. We should be able to do the same on this phone. One thing I was looking at is the XNA development kit from Microsoft that is used to program for Zune. There is a glitch in it that allows free access to Windows CE on the Zune. If we could get this program to recognize the Kin Two as a Zune, I believe we could get in!
Another option is finding an exploit (possibly in the browser). Run some javascript which executes some shell code allowing us access to the phone. This is basically a "drive-by-download" which has been done many times on pc's.
I am more interested in looking into the similarities with the zune at the moment but one thing is for sure, we do need more interest in this phone. I recommend asking experienced programmers on hacking forums or anywhere. Also... college computer science and software engineers are always in need of projects. Many times you can talk to the department head and a student could work on it for a project. So, if you have a college in your area, go talk to them. We need to spread the word and get people interested in the possibilities of this phone!!!
Lets hack this thing!!!!!
Have you guys tried asking help from Olipro or Cmonex? These guys are masters at creating HardSPL on Windows Mobile, maybe they can help out with this? It might even be a challenge for them.

Counting that the above it's true, the problem is that we still have no drivers nor known way to "flash"/write the "created" HardSPL or a ROM on the device.
At least not that i know (no experience on the topic).
If they also find a way to do so, i could do nothing less than bow em.
We shoudl try and find some of the actual M$ devs that worked on this project. Surely they are angry about how things turned out and would be willing to dish Anyone seen any docs listing developers?
One word: NDA
Anyway, you dont need any docs, you could find most of them just doing google searchs.
"site:linkedin.com kin phone"
Meh.

Is there a programing App/website out there for Non Programmers?

I've not seriously programmed since I was 10-12 years old and Peek'd/Poke'd my way through in BASIC on my C=64. I'm wanting to create an app to use on my phone and even release into Marketplace for others. It's a general Ballistics program. I've noticed there is nothing out there that I can find for the hobby or competitive shooter. If someone else wants to take up the challenge, please feel free. But, if not, I'd be willing to do one if I can find the programs to help with this. Also, does anyone have any books or other sites that will explain the programing languages needed to make a current (Mango) compatible app.
Thanks
JTMcD.
If you know a website with rss feed, you can try FollowMyFeed
http://www.followmyfeed.net/en-us
"FollowMyFeed allows you to quickly create your Windows Phone 7 application for free without any technical knowledge.
Let us guide you through a simple interface for creating an application to your image..."
Do a seach for "Windows Phone touch studio", maybe this is something fou you.

I'm with you!
I don't want to create a feed based app either, mine is strictly texted based with a search feature. Not quite as easy as it looks
I've spent all day looking at the attached document. It's a small tutorial on WP development.

OLPC OS on Zync Z930 Tablet

Hi there,
I am planning to start some project in the NGO I am currently working in, a child aid organization in India. Therefore I bought some Zync Z930 tablet with 1,2Ghz CortexA8-CPU, 512MB DDR3 Ram and a capacitive touchscreen. Currently Android Ice-Cream-Sandwich (4.0) is running on it, but I want to install OLPC OS on it which is a Fedora-based distribution especially developed for the needs of children.
Actually, I don´t know how exactly to unlock the bootloader, root the device and install some other OS on it. Is there a general way or is this specific for every device? What about the driver support for the touchscreen etc.? Will it be the same as with Android? Furthermore, how can I make the device boot from SD-Card or USB?
To my knowledge: I have got some knowledge on GNU/Linux, I´m quite familiar with the terminal etc. and I have programming knowledge (C++), too, but none in Kernel or other low-level programming.
Sorry for not posting links to further information, but as this is my first post, I cannot post them...
If further information is required, please let me know it.
Thanks a lot,
badday
We're working on very similar lines

Hello badday,
I'm from Mumbai ...
We're working on getting Sugar on similar devices..
We kind of have made some progress..
The idea is to get the kernel sorted out for the particular device, and the base rootfs over which the system can be installed over.
Want to participate in the effort?
Kindly join the mailing list at gnowledge.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/swarm
Happy hacking!

Hi jquip,
yes, I would be interested to join ur project, just need a little introduction and some more information. Do u guys have a git repo with the code on it?
Best wishes from Delhi,
badday
So I finally managed to install Sugar on top of Ubuntu on top of Android. First thing I did was rooting the tablet with adb commands, using "Complete Linux Installer", downloaded Ubuntu core, manually enlarged it to have enough space, installed lxde and sugar 0.90 from the official Ubuntu sources, started the xserver and vnc server and finally vnc-ed on the tablet into the graphical UI and started sugar.
However, currently I am facing the problem that e. g. turtle art will fail to start out of sugar but works fine when started just out of LXDE, so let´s see what the problem will be, stay tuned.
As I faced too many problems with Ubuntu, I changed to Fedora. Now activities can be started and it works like a charm...
Here are some pics: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/hcnpkf4a83dczea/dZCr0Rc4U9
Photos are great.
Those pics really motivate me to want to make this happen on the Yeahpad Pillbox7 I am working on to do the same.
I am curious about your work there in India.
I would like to network with you further and beyond the scope of xda-developers. That we can cooperate together on educational goals for children internationally using computer protocols is fascinating. Consider putting me in your Google+ circles (I am at j dot mp slash paulplus) and on facebook i am fb dot com slash paulgydos. you can reach me directly by email at paul at gydos dot com. also I am on twitter @paulgydos and for the tablet project the twitter is @yeahpad. I am about to mention you over there at @yeahpad. I particularly like Google+ lately as it is currently a more serious platform than facebook which on the other hand has the benefit of so many users.
Thanks again for your posts.
I sent you a friend request on facebook as I am not at Google+ and not frequently on twitter.
Nice to have somebody in the same boat.

this get
"kernel sorted out for the particular device, and the base rootfs over which the system can be installed over" business
and getting ARM architecture away from proprietary-software like constraints seem like incredibly good goals.
so I joined the mail list and I'm reading through some of the archives.
What other places are people gathering around and working on such ideas?
I want to participate!
paul at gydos.com // twitter dot com slash paulgydos // fb dot com slash paulgydos // and also G+ address is j dot mp slash paulplus
bring me into it!
