Custom ROMs for stock kernel - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

I'm curious on how difficult it is to fix a ROM to run on stock kernel? Does anybody know of a good tutorial? I love my ion but unfortunately can't unlock the bootloader which leaves me with a stock kernel

It's because you have a carrier locked Xperia S. The above method wont work with it, also if you have the SIM unlock code the bootloader wont unlock. Do one thing, mail your carrier and sony asking if unlocking bootloader is possible.
BTW you can still root your device and install custom ROMs just search the forum.

Epic Failure while trying to flash/root my ARC ICS 4.0.4

So today after watching tutorial videos and reading about it I finally made my mind and decided to flash/root my xperia arc. The build no of my stock was .431 now what I did was download the '.431 ready to root ftf' and flashed my phone, now when I tried to root it it gave me several errors mkdir failed for tmp, File exists and rm failed for *, No such file or directory and to make thing worse the memory card messed up and I had to format it and lost all the data. Now I've recovered the phone using pc companion but I failed very badly
I have no idea what exactly did I do wrong?

Read the stickys, and the individual threads for instructions.
Go to setting after flash the ready to root 4.0.3. Click at xperia. Click connectivity. Click USB connection mode. Choose MSC. The default is MTP if i not mistaken. Then root your phone and flash back 4.0.4 kernel.
This method i using when i root my phone last week. Before that it was giving me so many error.
Im on LOCKED BOOTLOADER while doing that

Yes, after unlocking the bootloader flash a kernel, and then install a custom rom that's pre-rooted. Much easier way if you don't mind not sticking with stock.

Normally I use the Arcknight kernel (Get version 3.5.1 or 3.3 because 3.6 is broken), but since Sony released the new .587 build I'm sticking with this kernel for now.
Now with Roms I suggest you go with this one its really good .
Okay I just rooted it sucessfully but I kept the bootloader locked.
How do I flash Arcknight 3.5.4 on my locked bootloader?

If that's not possible then can you please recommend some good ROMs for locked BL if there are any?

If you're going to root then you might as well unlock the BL. If IceBean needs a custom kernel then you can't use it, if not follow the instructions.

[resolved]How to root stock ROM?

I found Jelly Sandwich too slow so I down graded to this stock ROM. Now when I run the root for scripting I get a bunch of permission denied messages and it doesn't work. How can I root the phone? I can't unlock the boot loader.

According to this thread with a locked boot loader custom kernels can't be flashed. Is it that you can flash stock kernels but not custom ones?
yep. stock kernels you can flash because they're stock - stock ics already uses them. custom ones, you can't.

BELL Xperia ZL bootloader unlock allowed: NO

Recently picked up my Bell one and noticed it says no.
Anyway around this ? how can i unlock the bootloader?
This is making me reconsider the device and go get the HTC One
may i ask what you need to do with an unlocked bootloader?
Root recovery and rom flashing can still be achieved with a locked bootloader.

well once cwm or twrp is fixed you can flash roms and not loose root or recovery.
as for why have an unlocked bootloader, well custom kernels.
I thought Sony was offering unlock bootloaders to everyone.
btw, have you tried the unofficial unlock tool?

Is this true?
I thought you could only load Sony-based Roms. Like Lite edition ROMs et all.
But what if I wanted to load CM10 onto my Bell ZL?
I definitely need to unlock the boot loader no?

99% of the ROMs for the ZL or for that matter almost any phone are for ones with an unlocked boot loader. Can ROMs be made for locked boot loaders as well? Sure they can. But devs have enough bugs and performance enhancements to deal with as it is to worry about locked BLs.

yes you need an unlocked bootloader to use official cm10, but in time you will see versions ported for locked bootloaders.

[Q] Bootloader question

Once my bootloader is already unlocked (I have a custom ROM..) is there any way to re-check my bootloader status via some app or *#*# code? like the systeminfo you had with *#*#737 blah blah.
Why you want to re-check? You already know your bootloader is unlocked right!?
Still if you need to confirm. You can always try using fastboot mode to see if your bootloader is unlocked or not.
One suggestion create a thread for your questions arc q&a section filled with your questions

Flash custom kernel. If it finishes successfully, then it is unlocked. If it fails (most of the times, it gives ERROR: Device must be rooted first), then it is locked.
