So I'm planning on getting the Gs3 in about a week. $300 for the phone, original packaging and a couple cases. Just wanted some input on if that's a decent deal and if you guys would do it. I used my upgrade a few months ago to get the EVO LTE, but I want to try something different for awhile. Thanks

They're actually going for 350-400 so that's not a bad price. I have a few buyers set to buy mines at $375ish.

My only reservation is that I have had Samsung phones and was not very happy, but it seems like they got this one right. My biggest concern is Samsungs gps. Did they get it working good?
there aren't a lot of complaints on the forums.. so no, gps works pretty well. i can practically use navigation inside my house, even indoors it seems to gps lock fairly quick.
That's what I figured, I haven't read anything negative about it anywhere. I appreciate all the input.
i know what your talking about, i had that problem with the nexus, but it isn't a issue here.

Good deal. Have a look at the note 2 also.
I looked at the Note. It's a too big for me.
Man this phone looks easy to root too. I had the Samsung vibrant when I was on Tmobile and rooting and using Odin was a cakewalk. I always wished htc would become this root friendly.
Man I've had the epic 4g the epic 4g touch and the s3 and this is definitely the best. I can get gps indoors for the first time and the battery life is double for me!
A great phone you won't be disappointed!

Depending upon your area, it's not so much the phone as much as it is that Sprint service sucks right now due to the NV upgrades. I haven't been happier with a phone since I started using smart phones with the OG Droid a few years back. It's stable, sturdy, easy to customize, and depending on which ROM you choose the battery life is KILLER!!!!

I always root right away, there's no reason for me to wait to do that.

Tried two and that's when I knew I better get out now before my 15 days was over. I must say , the galaxy nexus was the coolest phone I've ever used. Ics is amazing as is the beautiful screen on the nexus.
The dropped calls, bad battery life, below average camera, missed calls, texts that never were, pitiful LTE reception, and defective screen are all a few of the problems I couldn't live with anymore.
Bummer. Good luck with your next phone.

Sorry to hear you have had such a bad experience. I just got mine today and am very impressed with ICS and the display of the phone. I turned off 4G right away as I would rather save on battery life.
Sounds like you got a bad batch of the GN.

100%. Oh what's that...you are not going to use the phone we all have? Thanks for sharing.....
As for everyone else...9 Android devices in a year...not because I am unhappy with them but because I LOVE phones and new technology. My only gripes are how annoying MTP is and the lack of an SD card slot. A kick stand could be cool, but overall.....10/10.
I'm not a fanboy, I just feel like fro the first time in a long time I got exactly what I paid for. No issues here at all.

I would love to see stats comparing failure rates, scratched screens and bugs between the GSM and LTE version. Going on Reddit, XDA and a few other sources the LTE device seems to be far more problematic.
I was going to write a longer reply to this thread, but I'm to busy posting in forums for phones I don't own.
I just don't understand the point (if there is any) of threads like this one. Everyone has the right to their own opinion but what do they expect out of these threads? Do they think people will notice or even care that they didn't stick with a phone or whatever it may be? No offense OP, I just can't understand these threads.

That may be true, but theres clearly an overall higher count of LTE users on XDA here. The international crowd (and US importers) are the minority of the "general user" type conversing here.
My screen has "grain" and the mini popping speaker sound. Plus no warranty and this is still the best Android phone to date IMO

Yea, I'm sure OP would appreciate the 5 minute battery life, the small lcd screen, and of course the amazing Scorpion chip that is based on 3 year old architecture
My screen had "grain" when I got it, and what looked to be burn in, but those have gone now, and have to say screen is almost perfect.
As for Rezound... I will personally, never use an LCD again unless they stop making LED screens.
What's up I've come to the dark side, well the other dark side. I've been on XDA for a while. I just ordered my unlocked Nexus from Amazon tonight for $502 with 1 day shipping!
My short story, I originally took the GF to AT&T to show her the Note as I though it was the perfect phone for her. She doesn't own a tablet like me and uses her iPhone to read her Hollywood gossip yada yada. I figured she would love the Note.
I also ended up loving the Note too "new toy syndrome" so I had to have one. Our upgrades weren't due until May. So I went ahead I threw down $650 for the AT&T Note.
Now don't get me wrong the Note is awesome! But the reasons it didn't work for me is.... Well first my area was "supposed" to get LTE in June but that failed and was pushed back till 2013. So what good is a LTE phone will no LTE! That's a big reason I didn't buy a international Note. Also I fell for the old "the note will get ICS in Q1" silly me I think I'm done believing or hoping for carrier updates anymore.
And honestly I've been in love with the Nexus since its unvailing. It's such a sleek pristine looking device. Not to mention pure ICS experience. I tried to set my Note up like a ICS overlay. But still had that god awful touch wiz lag.
I think I made the right choice, obviously. Nothing taken from the Note but me already using my Tablet daily it felt a tad redundant to have a 5.3" display and my tablet. I think the Nexus screen size is perfect. I have big hands and was able to one hand the note while typing but felt like it could possibly fall. I find the iPhone to small like I'll crush it, the Note a little on the iffy big side. But the nexus seems perfect size in today's mobile smartphone standards.
So just wanted to welcome myself and I have a lot of reading to catch up on!
Can't wait to get my Nexus with no AT&T branding and bloat less! I was gonna get the white model but it was $40 more and I thought the black looked more stealth and clean. I had a white note but I liked how the entire device even the dace was white.
I just did the same. I am not disappoint.

Now the the thing I used the S-pen a lot was for Draw something with the GF, but I felt like it was cheating hahaha! And I was much better challenging the little one in fruit ninja. There are many guides on the web and also tool kits. You can try and follow the instructions here
Most importantly you will need to set up Android SDK and drivers. Once this is done modding any Android device is a few short scripts away.

Waiting on the carriers is not fun. The carriers do not have the end users interest at heart. Although buying off contract carries many risks with GNex this is a good device.
Since your contract will be ending soon, don't renew if you can help it... go here instead:

Both phones are giving me the itchy trigger finger, and the phone's release dates are only a month apart. So I pose a question to the current G-nexus owners. What's the reasoning on choosing a device that is less superior and both selling for the same price?
I'm a nerd, So I like the idea of NFC and google wallet. Also, I wanted a pure google device. I hate that HTC is always the last to get updates and the first to add bloatware. If I was to look at another device, it would be the S3
If it s dual core evo, I would say just get the nexus

I am in the same boat here. As I see it I have three options. Stick with my Evo 3D, get a Gnex, or get a Evo 4G LTE. Right now getting a Gnex is looking good .
Super Amoled screen is better in my opinion. It's much more beautiful.
The Gnex is going to receive Android updates a lot sooner than the EVO.
HTC (in my cases) appear to drain battery quicker than any other manufacturer.
Why get a phone that will have a locked boot loader and wait until they release the unlock or wait months for someone to crack it ....no thanks
Been there done that and have the shirt with a pos 3d on it

This is the same reason I went from a HTC 3d to the Gnex .... HTC is too good at locking down a bootloader. Some of the latest HTC phones need a jump wire to root them! That, to me, is crazy.
I loved my original Evo, but changing to the Nexus S, then to the Galaxy Nexus was the best thing I ever did. Nexus phones are a million times better, whether you leave them stock and unrooted, or you like rooting and roms. There's just so many advantages to Nexus phones.

I had no clue the One S had a super Amoled screen. That explains why the screen "WOWed" me.
Get the Nexus.
The new Evo will likely break easily, be laggy, and get updates 6 months later.
Also, developer support.

I hope to also get the Evo 4G LTE as well if all goes according to plan. I want both devices, but if I had to pick one it would be very hard for me. Yes, the GNex will get updates the soonest and there is a lot of support, but I still like Sense and developing for it. I know lots of my EVO 3D guys are getting the LTE and have asked me to make a ROM.
The new processor in the LTE might only be dual core, but it is a monster. I think it will be a good phone and it will be all about preference.

Coming from an evo3d to gnex i will tell you i will never buy another htc phone in my life. The smooth vanilla ics is amazing. No root problems (so easy to root), you dont have to worry about having a certain hboot to flash kernels and such, Plus the evo lte is kinda ugly imo.

It depends on what you want... The GNex will get official updates to Jelly Bean and, more likely than not, Key Lime Pie. The Evo, on the other hand, will be lucky to get Jelly Bean at all, and KLP is almost out of the question. Also, the GNex, like all Nexus devices, has first-rate dev support. If software is important to you, then there really is no other option-- the Nexus is sovereign!

Really? Been a long 7 days for ya, huh? Not enough that we got our Odin restore, a new leaked build with new radios, EOS, CM9 Kang, JakROM, TWRP, and being able to flash any custom kernel on the Gnex forum? All within 5 days of the official release. I think we're off to a great start.

Why can't we just have a compare, contrast, and opinions. The reason this type of thread happens over and over is because of all the trolling and flaming back and forth which leads to lock. Be better if it was just one nice clean thread with good input and actual comparisons.
I went with the Evo because of the kickstand, screen, and camera button. I'd be able to get more feedback once I get the phone.
By the way, I had a thread like this Monday and it was shut down because people were bickering. Wish people could lose their "e"-go and just converse normally.
I'm leaning towards the Evo as well, for better camera w/button, kickstand, nicer design, and superior screen. I'm just afraid it'll have quality control issues down the road whereas I have no such fear with the SIII.

While i want to believe htc has gotten better, i was one of the unfortunates that got an original EVO with the screen separation issue. The faceplate/screen was detaching from the phone and it took weeks for Sprint to accept it was an issue, it was separating right in front of one of their techs at a corporate store and they said repeatedly "sorry, dont see it listed as an issue", even though 2 seconds of google searching at that point showed it was widespread. After weeks of stress and a plethora of phone calls they finally accepted reality and said they would swap my phone....with no promise it would be a fixed "new batch/fixed" model. It was truly unbelievable the way it was handled, on HTC's and Sprint's part.
So while i loved the evo, once I FINALLY got a decent one, the heartache of the experience makes me say....Samsung all the way

A good example post of reasons of why you choose one over another by "ExtraCrispy"
SGS3
1. TW over Sense - can someone tell me exactly what is so great about Sense? The chief virtue of Sense 4 everyone seems to be raving about is how much less obtrusive it is (removing the corousel, quick settings etc). It has zero new features, except for the coverflow style task list. The new TouchWiz has a ton of features, some of them may end being gimmicks, but may be useful. And Sense is a heavy skin - even in the E4GLTE, you can sometimes see the dreaded 'reloading Sense' when you press home.
2. Better buttons - I don't need a dedicated task list button when long press on home does the job. I do mind my screen space being taken by the menu bar for tons of legacy apps and any app which is marked compatible with GB. GS3 made the right decision with a menu button
3. Root - S-OFF on new HTC phones is very hard, gone are the days of simple rooting like with the Evo 4G. HTC's dev unlock is crap. Galaxy phones are much simpler to root. And cutom roms/kernels are a big part of Android for me.
4. Hardware differences are basically irrelevant. In the US both will have the S4, the screens are close enough and both have microSD support. There are endless debates about plastic vs aluminum, build quality, looks and so on which are all down to subjective opinion.
5. Audio/Video - The Evo will probably do better in low light due to the better aperture (f/2.0 vs 2.6) but the picture quality is probably same on both (GS3 has a newer sensor, Evo uses th eone from the GS2), they both have the same software features (Evp uses a separate ISP, but GS3 does the same stuff in software), and video recording is definitely better on the GS3 (full bitrate HD video). GS3 also has the better DAC, though most likely US versions won't have the Wolfson.
6. GS3 comes with 50GB vs 25GB Dropbox.
I say skip both and get galaxy nexus for now if not wait for galaxy note im getting galaxy nexus first for the lte and then galaxy note buying both retail price

I'm getting the evo lte. Can't stand touchwiz. Ive always been a big fan of HTC and sense so its a no brainer for me. Hopes it makes up for how crappy the evo 3d was.

This question is unanswerable until both phones have been out at least 2 months. That way you can be able to evaluate the developer scene, and see which phone really is the best.

Wow, I am kinda thinking the same. Having 2 lines (one with a Nexus series, one with a Galaxy series) is a lot of fun. Having the ET4G and S3 would be nice but I just don't know. If a phone comes along that is truly mind blowing I would buy it off contract. I still don't know what the hell I am going to do with my June 1 upgrade. I am going to be researching like crazy the next few weeks though
Im leaning more towards the EVO at the moment as well.
Not to ***** but perhaps this will help someone considering a purchase.
I recently had the chance at a free upgrade from my Nexus S 4g (free as in two-year contract) so based on the fact that LTE is supposedly active in Baltimore and the Galaxy Nexus got insanely rave reviews from everyone, I decided to take the leap.
Here's what I found:
1.) LTE does not work in any of the locations I spend the most time in Baltimore. In fact I cant even say that it works at all as I've never seen an LTE connection anywhere in the city. According to the coverage map, my house and my kid's soccer field on the other side of town are both in LTE areas but I get no LTE signal at either location. Forcing LTE in either location results in no signal at all. I can only assume that Sprint LTE is not ready for prime time or I have a defective phone.
2.) MTP. One of those things that the reviewers never mention. I sort of expected that the phone would use MTP since the Nexus 7 does and was disappointed to find this to be the case. MTP has been unreliable when copying large numbers of files on every device I've ever encountered it on, not to mention the annoying Windows 7 warnings about how your media files may not work when you know they absolutely will work. Sure enough, the copy hung and the phone had to be unplugged and plugged back in the first time I tried to copy my old /sdcard contents to the phone. Took me about 3 tries to get everything copied. I much prefer regular old USB Mass Storage mode.
3.) WIFI signal strength. The WIFI signal strength is demonstrably worse than on my Nexus S4g (which also isn't great). It's just a little worse but bad enough that I can't reliably use WIFI on my porch or at my desk at work, both locations where I get a usable weak signal on the Nexus S.
4.) Size. This one is totally subjective but I find that it's more difficult to use the phone one handed, with my thumb as the pointer. This is how I use the phone 99% of the time. I suspect I could get used it but for now it's a minus.
5.) Speed. For daily use, mostly reading and checking email, the phone is not appreciably faster than my Nexus S 4G. Google Now is a bit snappier and you get the occasional lag when switching apps less often but that's about it.
So, that's that. Otherwise it's a very handsome phone. No LTE is the real killer. I don't see the point of locking myself into a two year contract when I can't even use LTE and I know the next Nexus will be out in the next 6 months or so. WiMax still works so I'll just stick with that until Sprint gets their **** together.
Cool story bro. But i haven't had any issues with mine and couldnt be happier.

I don't understand why people post these things in the gnex forums. We are here kuz we own them and like them. No disrespect but I don't care why you don't like it. I don't have the issues you speak of so hope you find a phone you like. There is an appropriate place to post your review. Its on the sprint sight. I just hate when people do this. Its telling us to our face that the phone we have sucks.

and we care because.....??
Your first mistake was expecting Sprint to have descent LTE. If you are interested in LTE you go VZW, otherwise just pass on it for a few years.
So your main issue is that Sprint has awful service? This isn't news. Grab a play store nexus and pick your flavor of prepaid SIM card!
Nexus FTW!!! We should totally create a rant and rave forum... That would just be like so much more fun to sit there and watch people bash phones that they don't even understand... Especially why a Nexus is a Nexus... The phone is awesome because it is a developers playground, if you want a phone that supposedly works the way everybody else wants then go buy an iPhone and believe like the rest the morons in this world that it is the most sophisticated smartphone...

Why do people still use carrier subsidized phones then ***** about the service? Should have jumped ship on sprint instead of getting them to rope you back in with a free $350 phone. If you're still in remorse period return it, leave sprint and pick up a GSM unlocked Nexus.
