Camera test

Could anyone provide series of photos taken by HTP2? I'd like to compare them with other devices.
More people would be welcome so we can compare even pro2 between themselfs. I've already met one pro2 with blurred and shaded camera. I just dont want to believe all those cameras are so bad.
It would be nice if you took photo in different conditions. Like outside, in the dark, of the text, of the colorful scene, inside the building with poor light conditions etc etc.

thank you for your post. Colors are so dull. I tried to increase contrast and it looks bit nicer. Anyway I think pro2 would deserve better camera.
Could anyone else share his opinions about the camera?

I'm a bit disappointed about the camera, I've a Kaiser and the pictures are clearly better than these!...

You can actually make the Kaiser camera ten times better by simply taking off the back cover when taking pictures or video. For some reason the plastic on the camera cover is dingy and blurs it a little.
Some people have actually removed that one plastic piece from the cover or just drilled a tiny hole, personally I couldn't do that.

I know, I usually quit the cover... and the quality is MUCH better than the ones taken with pro2.... I hope another samples with other configurations will be better, I wont buy a new phone with worse camera than the one I have!!

Well maybe its just the same issue, the backing cover lens. Its supposed to be a 3.2 mega pix.

just an FYI all, i didnt adjust anything. not even sure my pics are set to fine quality. I will check the settings and report back
EDIT: *** ok yup, had all the default settings with no adjustment to any of the lighting

I didnt change the settings in device. I changed contrast in Irfan view just to see if images may look better.
Lets admin that camera sux lot in HTP2. I just want to insure myself that the better result may be achieved by the software changes (like change of contrast for example).
On almost all photos i've seen there is some kind of gray curtain. Because I want to use camera in my next device I was thinking about it and i decided that its enough for me that photos looks good in the device when showing to friends. I dont need extra quality as compact camera could provide.

I was wondering what the video recording capability is on this phone. I'm told it's capable to record in 640*480 resolution these days. Is it any good (crisp / fluid) or choppy and.. well.. reasonably useless like the recordings my P4350 takes (taken into account that that phone records into the size of a poststamp)?
Bottom line: will I be using the feature to take my holland's funniest video and win 10 eurocents?

R_phAn - I can tell you in advance that this phone can't record fluid 640*480 video!
This is a result of a myriad of excuses:
- Drivers blah blah
- Hardware camera Interface to phone blah blah
- Processor blah blah
I've determined All this without even testing out the camera functionality myself... Imagine that!
And people get excited about this phone that uses even more dated processing hardware than the TP1?? (7200a)

Here is one in very poor light. For better results try to lower the sharpness to +2.

Here you can check out this sample video (from pocketnow's review)... Looks pretty good to me (and yes, it's in 640x480 )... It's not some fast moving test or something, but in general the video looks good...

Question - Why does the N95 with roughly 2.5 year old hardware record better video than this newly released TP2 phone?
And we as consumers just accept this without questioning this - LOL!

Tell me about it!
Admittedly this is the same across the board for all commercially available WM 6 series devices at the moment but it still stinks.
I am hoping this will change when Snapdragon processors are released as this is said to have at least 720p 30fps playback and record capabilities.

How is the screen, like when you Shake the Xperia X1 during taking a picture the screen won't lag.
A.t.m. on dutty's rom, he has done the same. when shaking the phone while in camera, the camera screen does not lag or get any delay.
Is this also the same on Touch Pro 2?
I'm considering getting a TP2 and sell my Touch HD.

Did the phone put the time stamp on it ? is able to be turned off ?

If you want a qwerty slider phone that is this slim then you have to accept that you cannot get a video camera into it
Phone is always a compromise between size and features and functions. Think about the size (the thinness of the slider part) and then compare it to the phones you say have good camera. They're a lot thicker.
Someday the technology will go further but this is what we have now.

i come from a photography background. classical training (dark room, color and bw), plus many years with very expensive canon dslr equipment. point being i have a penchant for photography and a good idea for image quality.
i wasn't expecting the quality of my G11 from this phone but i was definitely expecting better than what i am getting. pictures at night or in restaurants come out horribly overblown. most places pictures come out blurry and/or very soft focused.
i've seen posts blaming it on the camera software (sense). can the software really be crippling the hardware that much? is there an alternative camera software or a fix to the existing software?
has anyone successfully ported the CM6 camera over to sense?
how are you all getting alone with your "8MP" camera?

The new 3.30 update is supposed to help with dark shots, have you had a chance to try it out yet?

no i haven't. i'm not changing roms for the camera. but i'll look into moving the camera app over from the 3.30 rom. see if it works?

If you're using the older stock ROM you can flash it over top of the one you have and only wipe the dalvik & cache, that way you keep everything as is. If not you should be able to just copy the camera stuff. There's more to it then just the .apk file though, someone posted a list of changed files and I believe it showed some of the camera files in the system/lib folder changed also.

While I appreciate your experience and expertise, and I say that without any sarcasm, as I do like taking pictures and wish I knew more about photography, it is after all, only a phone...

yeah but it's a phone that bragged about being able to capture bleeding colors thanks to its 8mp camera. if i'm getting the same image quality as my samsung code was getting me, it's dissappointing
the image quality problems we're experiencing i think are due to software limitations. hence why pictures supposedly come out better on CM6...

Nah, it's hardware. HTC has never been known to have good smartphone cameras.

What's the deal with people saying that their camera took better pictures once the outer lens cover cracked, and was removed? Any truth to this?

Does anyone have a link to this apk. Or do I have to switch roms. Better yet I'm on a rooted stock sense Rom how would I get this apk on my phone.

I'm testing out VIGNETTE for taking photos.. so far it looks better.. I dont like the fact that it creates its own gallery....

My lens cracked so I took the cover off and replaced it with a custom piece of clear scotch tape. Pictures look better now than they did before ( I'm serious). Here's a close up.

I agree with the OP. Yes it's only a cell phone but if anyone has used the camera on a BlackBerry Bold 9650, or a Tour for that matter you'll see the difference is night and day.
Hi all btw, I've read a lot on here but never posted!

I completely agree with your assessment on the poor quality of the camera, as do many others who bought the whole "HD Cam" nonsense that HTC sold us.
To be fair, yes, this is a phone... But, the marketing (go figure) for the Evo hyped up the camera abilities as HD, 720p video. This phone does neither well. While they have made improvements in the coding since the release, this camera struggles immensely with jitter, poor low light capture (in which most cases the flash seems to wash everything out), and horrible audio quality during video.
Lastly the compression used is awful, and here's why I don't care how many megapixels the silly sensor captures, at the end of the day compression rules all.
95% of my pictures come out grainy and crappy, particularly while using the digital zoom. The software just cannot cope.
I started a thread about this very issue a couple months back, unfortunately the devs don't seem to view this as a task worth undertaking, and after the little amount of research and specs I've seen this may be because the cam sensor used sucks as badly as the software controlling it. It just doesn't do low light well at all. I still believe there's hope if someone with the programming stones who also shares a love for good photography steps up to the challenge.
Otherwise, we probably won't have a good camera until the Evo 2.

And just to prove I don't think the hardware is to blame check this out, this camera can shine under the right conditions. This photo is fully stock, not retouched in any way, and was taken using one of the various sense roms floating around mid summer. If we could get the low light shots, and video on par with this, I think we'd be in good shape.
The second photo is in the dark but shooting a bright frame, up close...
I don't think they are bad at all, they just rarely turn out like this.

I noticed that it takes 5-10 times to manually focus before taking a shot to get a sharp looking picture.
It's as if the algorithm for autofocus is broken, and only occasionally does the camera focus properly.

Me too. I'm always tap tap tapping the screen, and swearing at it. By then I've usually missed the shot I want to take.

Can someone show a GS2/Nexus screen comparison?

I currently own a GS2 on AT&T (iPhone 4 on Verizon) and love it, I may buy a Nexus down the road when they are more readily available and not....800 effin dollars.
Anyway, I've seen a couple comparisons of a Super AMOLED Plus vs Super AMOLED HD screens, but they are done so close it almost seems silly to use as a comparison. I'm sure the higher resolution would help if I had my nose pressed to the screen, I just wanted to get an idea of what both screens look like close up, but not THAT close. Despite the lower resolution, the GS2 looks pretty sharp to my eye, not quite as clean as the iPhone 4, but still sharp.
If you have both phones (Nexus+GS2), can you sit them side by side and just take a few shots of the same text, icons, images. Close enough to see detail, but not right up to the screen since that's not how anyone looks at a phone.

Sweet thanks. I didn't have an image in mind really. Just maybe take a pic of this forums main page on both, a Gmail home screen icon with text...you know something with a smaller image like an icon and some text, or maybe a browser screen window with similar text at the same default zoom of each.
Is that making sense?
I'm not really concerned with color accuracy, more so with text and icon sharpness.

lol where are you getting the $800 price tag?? The phone is expected to launch at either $530, like the other Nexus phones, or $600.

I think you need to get closer to the screen to do it justice.
you can see the green tint of super amoled on the nexus.
The truth is the screen is far superior on the nexus

Excellent, thanks for posting those. The difference is about what I thought it would be, sharper than the GS2, still not sure it's as "clean" as the iPhone 4, but I do notice a step up in clarity. Not sure it's night and day, I imagine if the GS2 wasn't a plus the difference would be even more pronounced. Still a nice display, now I just need to find one of these close to retail price eventually. The browser at default zoom is noticeable, probably due to the larger screen size combined with a higher resolution.
Still a big fan of the GS2, I really can't pick a favorite between the two, each have strengths, ICS being a huge one for the Nexus. Samsung really has 2 amazing phones out right now. Now to find a Nexus that doesn't come close to being what I pay on my mortgage. :-/

I was sitting with a friend today who as a SII, he set his screen to max brightness and his wallpaper to microbes. I set my phone to the same settings, and it was obvious that the resolution helps as I saw more detail (smaller microbes and more of them) but the colours are better on the SII - more vibrant. most people know this anyway. It is only obvious if you hold them next to each other, every other time I use my phone the colours are fantastic!

I read that Google purposely calibrated the screen to make the colours look less saturated and more accurately realistic. So are you sure that the reason the SGII looks more vibrant is not that the SGII colours are more saturated?

For those of you that say the Nexus camera is terrible and the Iphone's camera is AMMMAAAZZZING!!!, here are a few pics for comparison. They were taken one right after another with the same light, conditions,etc. They are totally untouched with the exception of resizing them.
Let me know what you think???

The nexus is definitely better.

good comparison but then again I rarely use camera phone, I normally have my 60D with me for photos

honestly I kind of like the iPhone. Has less color tint and enables to edit it freely.

The both look close enough to me! Anyone taking pics on their camera phone for real big prints or whatever really needs to get a slr. Im sending pics to my wife, friends, facebook. And yes, I have a DSLR that I use when I need great pics.

They look pretty similar, maybe a little brighter colors from the Nexus, but that also looks like a change in lighting.
Then again, what do I know. My camera phone legacy starts with the grainy D1, to the even grainier X2, to now the Nexus. (I did have a iPhone 4, but the pics from that were not as great as everyone raved.)

interesting, only the salt shaker really looks different, you'd think the light conditions were different.

Im glad I dont have your eyes

If you reduce the lighting by 20% you will definitely see the differences - the nexus will be filled with noise. Take some distance landscape shots out side in sunlight and then compare the two cameras. Both sets of photos look good to me, but the shots were taken in very well lit conditions. Most shots you take with you phone are most likely going to be spontaneous, and you won't have the luxury of sitting at a table under lighting.

I'm curious how fast the iPhone 4S's camera is. I was at universal in Orlando this week and decided to take a quick shot of a coaster as it passed through a limited field of view. I had maybe a second to a second and a half to get the shot. With my GN I was able to grab the shots no problem. People with point and shoot camera's had trouble there (possibly cause of flash setting as I saw their flash go off twice).
The GN camera is great for catching action shots! IMO the GN camera is great for my uses.

The point of focus for the saltshaker pics are different. The iphone focuses more on the saltshaker and the foreground on the bottom half of the pic. The nexus focuses plainly on the background, leaving the salt shaker slightly blurred. Can you see if touch focusing on the nexus will solve that?

I tried to get the pics as close as possible to the same angle. I actually did use touch to focus but I may have missed just slightly.

I think the Nexus's camera is fine for a phone, and I'm a photographer with 3 SLR bodies and have spent a few thousands of dollars on lenses.

That is the point I'm trying to make with these pics. The camera on the iPhone is NOT as incredible as Apple and some others on here claim nor is the Nexus camera as bad as people are making out to be.

I actually did take some low light photos the other day with my cousin using his 4s and me using my Nexus. Needless to say he was impressed with my phone and his pics were mediocre.

Side-by-side comparison of iPhone 4s / Galaxy Nexus pictures (can you tell the differ

I was tired of hearing all the threads regarding how poor the quality of pictures are when taken with a Galaxy Nexus. I was also tired of the constant arguments about how the lighting wasn’t set correctly, or how I should be using a tripod, or how etc, etc, etc… Face it, if I was going to go through any of those motions to take a picture, I wouldn’t be reaching for my cell phone
So in the spirit of this, I took pictures of three simple items I had laying around my desk with both an iPhone 4s and a (CDMA) Galaxy Nexus. Both phones were set to complete auto and taken within seconds of each other to ensure identical lighting conditions. Once the pictures were taken, they were immediately downloaded. No further editing on either camera beforehand was performed.
The results:

Hard to spot any differences. Sure, when zoomed in you can see the differences based on pixel density, but at 30,000 feet… it’s all the same to me.
Test #2 – “Ehpple”
Now we’re starting to see some slight differences. However, it wasn’t what I expected. To me (and I’m no expert), the top picture has a brighter feel to it, but also seems a bit washed out. The bottom picture, while a little darker, seems to be slightly sharper and more in focus.
Test #3 – “Hometown Pride”
This is an interesting comparison. My initial reaction was: “Woah, check out the first picture… the color is WAAAY off. The second picture is much more accurate!” However, if I hold the actual pop can up to the computer monitor and compare which picture is more accurate, the top picture’s color is spot-on while the bottom picture has a deeper “red” to it compared to the can in real life. BTW, I have passed all my tests for color blindness… really!
To me, the bottom picture looks more appealing… but the top picture is more accurate. Crazy!
In conclusion, I don’t see enough of a difference to warrant all the hate towards the Galaxy Nexus and it’s camera. One camera appears to make more "appealing" pictures while the other seems to better capture the "raw" aspect of the image.
If I want to capture a “moment”, the Nexus camera will work just fine for me. If I need to capture an “image”, I’ll leave both phones on the table and grab the Rebel instead. If I need to be acknowledged by anyone waiting for the 5:30PM ferry from the city back to Larkspur, I'll grab the...
P.S. I did not identify which pictures were from the iPhone and which were from the GN on purpose. This was done to avoid a placebo effect for either phone. However, if you really want to know, check the file names and reverse engineer it from there.

The camera on the Galaxy Nexus is perfectly capable of taking great pictures and in my opinion it always does but I think what makes people write the camera off is the colour reproduction. The iPhone 4S and Galaxy SII seem to take pictures with colours that just 'pop' whereas the colours on the Nexus are duller and washed out. The vibrant pictures from an iPhone 4S or a Galaxy SII may look better visually but as mentioned by the OP, the colours are not accurate whereas pictures from the Nexus aren't very vibrant but they are accurate in terms of colour.
So people just want a camera that produces pictures that makes objects look better than they're supposed to! But you can easily use the photo editing features on the Galaxy Nexus to make the pictures similar to an iPhone 4S or Galaxy SII or maybe Google could release an update that makes photos seem more vibrant and saturated.

Top one looks better on the first two and the bottom looks better on the third. I'd say it's a wash.

For those who want to get the most out of their camera it would be a good idea to make pictures made in artificial lighting (like flash) with the white balance set manually. Experiment and find which setting gives you the most realistic result.
The "mood differences" in the pictures posted by the OP are mostly because the cameras chose different white balancing modes.
Auto-white balance (AWB) is wrong often, especially in artificial lightning, even in DSLRs.

Top picture was actually the iPhone in the first two pictures, and then i switched them around for the last picture.
I like the theory on the naming convention, much more exciting than the fact that i'm Andy, and my coworker (with the iPhone) is named Jake.
I totally agree with the white balancing issue, but i tried to make this a 'lowest common denominator' style of test, i.e. everything set to auto. I guess it's fair to say that the iPhone did a better job of light balancing... this one time, under these specific conditions.
Im glad someone else got the Faygo reference. However, now that i'm not in the office, it's time for a niceSanders chocolate stout from the Detroit Brewing Company for me.

Nice post, OP. I think you should have taken pics in different settings though because I think the SGN does considerably better at taking close-up shots than scenery/landscape shots or lower light indoor shots (with and without flash) You should do the same thing in those conditions to see the differences. I have the SGN and plan on getting the wife a 4S sometime soon (her OG Droid is barely working for her nowadays). So I planned on doing these types of comparisons when she got her phone too .

I'm sorry to say but I'm not seeing the major difference between these shots. Why are people saying this camera is so much crap when evidence like this shows otherwise? Maybe these indoor shots play to the GN's strength, but from the outdoor shots I've seen they're all marginally close.
Sure the iphone4/S & SGS2 may be better in every regard, but surely not enough for all the crying we're seeing on here?

Exactly my point.
Imagine comparing the two phones as automobiles (sorry, I live and work in Detroit... it's a habit).
The iPhone is the Ford Focus and Galaxy Nexus is the Chevy Cruz. One might be slightly faster in a straight line while the other would get better fuel economy, but the differences are so subtle that 99% of the users won't notice them. They are both cars (cameras) for the masses.
Lately, it seems like one camera is being called the Ferrari F430 and comparing it to a 1983 4-cylinder 4x4 Ford Ranger (I drove one all through college, trust me; it's a right ****ty vehicle!)

Can you do a side by side testing the flash on both cameras? My GN seems to take pictures with a yellowish tint. Its mostly noticeable on Asian people's skin which turns out looking sickeningly yellow.

I bought my wife the 4S when it came out and I got the Nexus when it came out (from my droidX)...I agree its not that big of a difference..mostly just more natural colors that can be spruced up if thats your thing.

Bottom picyure looks better in all 3 cases. Nice to see the GN can hold its own in the camera stakes. Another 'negative' ticked off my list of reasons not to get one in a couple of weeks

once I get 8 posts it will let me post photobucket photos from my nexus and that should change a lot of minds as well....must make 8 useless posts...2 down ;-)
