[MOD] boot animations for note ii - UPDATED - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Use rom toolbox to install or rename to bootanimation.zip and place in system/media using root explorer
Note rom toolbox defaults to data/local
This directory will work too but if u cwm flash another boot ani later, it will not take, data/local has priority, so change it in rom toolbox or pull the bootanimation out of the cwm zip [zip within a zip]
You must also
Navigate to system/media
Delete or rename bootsamsungloop.qmg and bootsamsung.qmg
Navigate to system/bin
Delete or rename samsungani
Rename bootanimation to samsungani
Update, the previous segment dose not need to be done in most if not all roms for this device now.
Update, That also means that the following will not restore stock boot animation if that is the case.
Now if you want to revert back to stock
Rename samsungani to bootanimation
Take _bk off the ends of the three other files.
If you deleated the files see the links at the bottem of the post.
To add stock shutdown to a rom rename bootsamsung.qmg to shutdown.qmg and place in system/media/video
You may haft to make the folder called video
IMPORTANT NOTE: TO DO BOOT ANIMATION MODS NO CHANGE OF PERMISSIONS IS NECESARY
If I helped you find a boot animation u like, please hit that thanks button
Update, spinning mario not working.

Further note, you can resize any png img boot ani using desc
If the imgs r jpeg you must convert them to ping then edit the desc, or resize every img if that did not work.
Imgs with transparancys MUST BE RESIZED
Change first two values in desc to 720 1280
Zip part0 and other parts n desc.txt to root of zip, using winrar and make sure its a .zip and your just storing, no compression
DO NOT ZIP THE PARENT DIRECTORY
THAT IS EXTREAMLY IMPORTANT
ONLY ZIP THE FOLDERS PART0 ECT AND DESC.TXT TO THE ROOT OF THE ZIP

And would this work on the Samsung version of Note 2? Not sure how the naming goes!

What do you mean the Samsung version of the note II

I meant the International version of note 2.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using XDA Premium App

If its 720x1280 it will work regardless of phone make or model also since the imgs are pngs the desc file can be changed to your screen resolution n they will work. Tested on note ii, samsung precedent, and htc evo and inspire.
Ill generate some gifs now.

thank you so much. followed your instructions on my sprint Note II PALJC used rom tool box to assign and it worked a treat.
now how about the shut down animation? and how do we changed the sounds hehe

Thanks OP. Couldn't stand the T-Mobile boot! Boot up and down sounds are in system/media/audio/ui, PowerOff.ogg and PowerOn.ogg. Disabled mine for now but I'm sure we can replace them with whatever we want. +1 on down animation! BTW here's a link to a ton of bootanimations in our resolution....

Find me a converter that spits out qmg
There may be a way to use a folder full of png imgs as well or a shutdown.zip it will be a manual install tho.

I will be adding cwm installs in the comming weeks.
If anyone has a gif they want a boot ani send me a dropbox file [make sure their not to small] and you must cite me the source of your animation. First come first serve on personal request. Work for rom boot animations get cutsies
Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 2

to set the boot ani you have to delete a few files and rename some files. I would just love a little app that "does this" with a click so I can then just use rom toolbox to install whatever ani I want

When I make the cwm installs you can flash one of those and it will do that work and then just use rom toolbox
Make sure ur rom toolbox is pointed to system/media it defaults to data/local. If u have already been using rom toolbox go and delete this file

Thanks for this info, OP.
Will this also replace the "static" Samsung graphic screen that displays before the animation?
If it doesn't, can you direct me to instructions that explains how to replace it with my own?
Thanks in advance.

It will not replace the stock samsung galaxy note ii splash
You will haft to look. And show me too.
Still working on shutdowns.

I believe the splash screen is kernel here not for our phone but samsung....http://rootzwiki.com/topic/29242-ep4dfp1hfp5emododin-change-boot-splash-image

splash is kernel and it should be changeable. they got a fix for it on the S3 but I am pretty sure its not nearly the same CPU in the two (S3 Note II) so it likely won't work for us till someone makes a similar fix for us.

I will see if I can dig up anything

I am a little confused about the stepsi have to take to change the boot animation. I understand about deleting the files in system/media and system/bin but it's unclear to me what to do work the downloaded boot animation. Am I just renaming the file to"bootanimation"and putting it in system/media?
Second question is will this get rid of the boot sounds if the downloaded bootanimations are silent?

just install rom roolbox. once you delete and rename the files you can just tell rom toolbox to install whatever boot animation you want.

I tried doing all these things manually with root explorer. I did everything as per the OP's instructions. I downloaded the alien animation and renamed it to bootanimation.zip and put it in system/media and renamed it to samsungani and put it in system/bin. When my phone boots I still have the annoying sprint audio boot but my animation is a blacked or screen.

Hey tried your method of editing off of a previous g2 boot animation to port the older red rage animation for the droid 1 phones but im having some issues. Didn't want to thread jack with my problems so I created a new one. I can't seem to get the red rage boot animation to work correctly, any expertise is welcome!

Ive figured a lot of stuff out as I found a site that explains the desc.txt file. The problem i'm having is that I simply can't load all of the screens before the phone boots lol, there's like 300+ PNG's to load between the two animation folders.
Well u might need to up the frame rate to make it play a little faster
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Ill download and lood at it tonight or tomorrow and see what I can do
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Thanks for the advice dude, ive played with the frame rate..like..a lot lol. Atleast i'm pretty sure. The default file should be set at 210p just to load the whole thing on a stock droid 1 at the time.
Ive played with it and trimmed some of the fat off like multiple black screens and such but it's still not enough. Thanks for your time, it really is a cool animation
This is also booting on CM RC2 which boots fast as crap anyways lol.
Yea I noticed the boot times are shorter which is cool but it cuts into our animation lol

None answer my question, do they need a specific name (the animated files) and do I need two folders or is 1 fine?

Just download any boot animation and look at the format.
You basically just need to arrange your frames (.PNG's) in order in a folder (name images "XXXXX_00000, XXXXX_00001, XXXXX_00002, XXXXX_00003.....etc.). If you have more than 80 or so frames, then use two folders, but try to split the frames between the two folders. Name the first folder "android" and the second folder "loop". Now, you'll need a .txt file that has contains the following code:
Code:
480 480 10
p 1 0 android
p 0 0 loop
Name this file "desc". Now, zip it all up with 7-Zip, or WinZip (no compression) and there you go.

Got a blank black screen.

I even tried having my pngs renamed to what the stock boot has them. With 7zip I replaced the android folder with the new one.

Are all of your frames 480 X 800, and are they all the same size? Also, try using a .txt file from another bootanimation. Might be a problem with the .txt file you're using.
Also, I had problems with winzip. Try using 7-zip...and check to make sure there aren't any other files in your .png folders other than your .pngs
Did all of the above. I replaced the pngs in the stock boot animation folder with the new ones.

Maybe try making your own .PNG folders, then select your images and move them there. Only thing you should borrow from another bootanimation is the desc.txt file. Make sure you zip it yourself too....no compression.
If you still have trouble...upload what you got and PM me the link. I'll try messing with it in the morning.
I did make my own android folder but I deleted the original android folder and replaced it with the new android folder I made. I didn't make a whole new zip. I'll try that tomorrow. I didn't think modding a zip (using 7zip to change contents) would make a big difference since I do it with apks to change things all the time.
If I post a link to what I have, would you mind packing something up for me?

Did my version not work correctly for you?
Yeah all I did to make that previously posted bootani fit our phones is change the desc.txt file. The images themselves don't have to be 720x1280 because the desc.txt controls the size that they are displayed. Does that make sense?
I have to admit, I started to download your version but noticed that it is 43 megabytes. This is quite big for a bootanimation. The smaller the better. I personally use .jpeg format instead of .png for most of my personal bootanis because .jpeg generally creates a smaller image file size.
I have to ask how you went about to re-sizing the images?

Definitely getting the white flashing. Looks decent other than that.
I did it with root explorer. Just placed the file in data/local and put the permission to rw--r--r and rebooted. Make sure you mount system as r/w, and it's as simple as that.

1 - Download and extract the S4_Original_BootAnimation.rar
https://www.dropbox.com/s/41d4csi1eyxvytg/S4_Original_BootAnimation.rar?v=0mcns
Make sure you have R/W permissions in system/media before copying over.
2 - Copy the files from the S4_Original_BootAnimation.zip to the system/media folder replacing the original files.
bootsamsung.qmg
bootsamsungloop.qmg
shutdown.qmg
3 - Copy the file from the S4_Original_BootAnimation.zip to the system/media\audio\ui folder replacing the original files
PowerOn.ogg
PowerOff.ogg
(I renamed my originals just to be safe.)
4 - Don't forget to match permissions on the files as well. If you simply rename the originals to .bak or something like that, the files will be right under it basically rw-r--r-- on all files.
Alternately, if you do not want to download; you can make a copy of, and rename the bootsamsung.qmg bootsamsungloop.qmg and shutdown.qmg that are already located in your system/media folder, and PowerOn.ogg it is already located in your system/media\audio\ui folder
If you want to disable sound go to:
system/media/audio/ui and search for PowerOn.ogg and PowerOff.ogg. Just rename it to PowerOn.ogg.backup and PowerOff.ogg.backup (or any other extension). Well done!
Reboot your phone and you should no longer see the T-Mobile animations or sound.
If you what to got back T-Mobile animations or sound and you delete the ones on your phone you can downland the form here https://www.dropbox.com/s/gclsix5qtapxjq5/S4T-Mobile_Original_BootAnimation.rar?v=0rc-s
If you want a custom BootAnimation animations i will Put them here when someone make a working one and that i have test it. Make sure you give them the create
and not me!!

I'd like to also express my thanks. Absolutely had to get rid of the stupid T-Mo animations!
Anyone have an idea how to remove the "T-Mobile" from the lower part of the lock screen?? I know that's just listing service provider. But there must be away to customize/remove that. Also annoying!

Here is the code for the desc.txt:
600 600 25
p 0 0 part0

Basically, it runs through the animation once (without any edit) and then goes to a black screen until I hear the AT&T boot sound and then the UI shows up (Still have root and all).
I tried editing the desc.txt file for it to repeat on and on, but all I get in return is a black screen. Can anyone help?
I am running the US version the S3 with 4.3, rooted. TouchWiz (I know...) ROM with custom launcher.
I am assuming I may have to flash a custom ROM in order to get rid of the AT&T animation boot (in order to see my custom image all the way until the UI loads).
Can anyone please direct me in the correct direction? I would greatly appreciate that.
Thank you!
When you edit the desc.txt it needs to be added back into the archive without compression otherwise it won't work. Try using WinRAR to add the edited file back in to the archive. In the options for zips there will be an option to add files without compression.

I'll give that a shot. Would that fix the black screen? Because I do see part of the animation until the moment the AT&T loading GIF appears
EDIT: I think it has something to do with the .zip file.
I have the original file here:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/9go9lvm9jj50z2a/bootanimation.zip
I extracted everything and edited the "desc.txt" file for it to repeat indefinitely, then I used WinZip to archive it back up (no compression) but still no avail.
I'll check it out tomorrow and see if i can get it working. Have you been able to get other boot animations to function properly?

Yup! I used an app called "Boot Box" or "Boot Animations" (one of those two, the proper escapes me at the moment).
I asked a friend for his advice, and he suggested that I try coping the part0 folder into part1, and have part1 loop rather part0. Taking a look at other boot animations, that seems to be the right way.
Let me know if you come across any other findings!
EDIT: Tried that, didn't seem to work...perhaps I'm doing something wrong. I'm not compressing the .zip however, so it must be something else...
EDIT 2: So I renamed the images in the part1 folder leaving off from where the part0 left off (part0 ended at img0062, so I started the images in part1 as img0063 and so on). Now I only see the part0 sequence and part1 is a black screen.
EDIT 3: This is the link of my .zip file: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/7sihrhzehlyhqxc/_eQ_hxo7K2/bootanimation.zip

Samsung stock roms generally animations with a proprietary animation package that uses *.qmg files. It sounds like your rom still has some of the qmg files??
The text from thedesc.txt file in bootanimation.zip file, which has two parts, 48 images each, in CM10.2.1 is
720 720 48
p 1 0 part0
p 0 0 part1
The second part, 'part1' is the part that loops and its 48 images are in a part1 subfolder.
The bootanimation.zip that you posted has 63 images. Why does the description text only have a 20 after the 600 600 if you have 63, not twenty images? I think this is a better bet for desc.txt content:
600 600 63
p 0 part0
For 4.3, you could use your bootanimation.zip file with CM 10.2.1, which is the stable Cyanogenmod rom for Jelly Bean 4.3. If you have an AT&T Galaxy S3, then you can find the rom as device d2att at
http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=d2att&type=stable
flash it with TWRP or CWM recovery.

The third part is actually the frames per second. It is usually recommended to have it around 15-25 FPS. I could give it a shot though...
I already flashed a CWM .zip that enables animations like these, and I have also successfully installed animations via Boot Animations (animations repeats successfully until UI shows up). So I feel like this animation specifically is the problem. I'm just not sure...
Thanks, I was confused about syntax for desc.txt
The xda tutorial mentions some rules for png images. Specifically, no interlacing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1560836
Could that or some property of the png be the issue? Also, zip compression is off, just STORE when making the zip.

Hmm. I'll take a look into that. It may be the png, but the thing is, it goes through one part of the animation then stops.
Was there something actually wrong with my .zip, or were you just mentioning that? I'm pretty sure I hit "no compression" on WinZip...
Nothing wrong with your zip afaik. 7zip shows no compression.

I *think* I'm using the stock ROM - as dumb as this sounds, I don't completely remember.
I do remember using ODIN to flash CWM and a couple of .zips to enable the custom bootscreen. Other than that, no other flashed mods apart from the ones installed via XPOSED.
I can use other custom boot animations, and they work fine. It just seems mine is a tad bit glitched. Does it work on your phone?
I just booted with your bootanimation.zip on my sgh-i747 that is running cm10.2.1 stable, jb 4.3. I made sure perms set to 644 before booting.
It runs without any problem, after the sgs3 cm splash screens and loops repeatedly until boot completed and my lockscreen appears.
It is something in your rom; most likely designed to run qmg.
perhaps the settings, or the kernel, or syscntrl, or buildprops could me modded. I have no idea.
Your bootanimation.zip is fine.
Probably best to flash a complete AOSP or TW rom that supports custom bootanimations.
