Well i took the leep on my SGH-l317m rogers/att note 2 and flashed bigbiff's twrp recovery he made for me, via odin then supersu.zip via twrp and all went well. also flashed Chainfires cwm6 recovery note2 and went well also no issues so far! counter does go up of course but im sure our great friend Chainfire will fix that eventually. support his work and grab triangle away pro ;D
big thanks to bigbiff and Chainfire and Oogar whom ever else involved!:good:
UPDATE UPDATE UPADATE! Triangle away and Mobile Odin have been Updated by Chainfire and worked perfectly on i317m and i317, My Binary back 0 and Samsung official with triangle away. This still will not allow OTA its for warranty purposes only!! I'll say it again support his work m8's purchase pro version of his apps!
As mentioned earlier by Chainfire CF-auto root has also been released for i317m and i317.
CF-auto root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980644 <----- Please use this method now posted by Chainfire to root your device according to model type!
QUICK GUIDE:
Flash your model of CF-Auto root via Odin using Pda tab nothing else ticked and done! ----- i317m&i317 CF-Auto-Root files are located here http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ Then flash your choice of Recovery either CWM or TWRP

For CWM Recovery (cwm6-recovery-i317.tar.md5) https://www.dropbox.com/s/yuj7caehux74h9u/cwm6-recovery-i317.tar.md5 Flash using Odin once again with pda only nothing else ticked!
To Install TWRP please use Goo manager app from the play store! much easier method of installation! click menu then install recovery.

Always do a backup of your rom right away within recovery first before flashing anything else!!!
What is CF-auto root?: CF-Root is meant to be used in combination with stock Samsung firmwares, and be the quickest and easiest way for your first root.
Remember everyone, like Chainfire said the more people that request source code from Samsung for our devices the better!! Do it here!
http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=inquiry
UPDATE: Also the FAST DORMANCY toggle by Gokhanmoral on the market also works stock rooted so far!
(More stable data connection and better battery life.)
Here is the root process I took before CF-auto root was released of course:
-Reboot device to download mode: volume down/home/power wait for mode to pop up, then volume up to start
-Open Odin and select PDA tab, Open file (cwm6-recovery-i317.tar.md5).
-Connect device to PC, and wait till device successfully added to com port
-Flash
-Do a nand backup of your stock rom with TWRP or CWM first, than flash CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip.
-Reboot and now you are rooted

Did you use the Galaxy Note 2 Toolkit?
Im curious as to which model you chose.
Or what method you used. I tried to search the Sprint section but came up with the toolkit only.
EDIT:
NM i found it under a thread in the Q/A Section

I did it too with these two files :

Yup, same thing works for ATT i317.

A link to the other forum in the Q&A section:

Also, a disclaimer that updates do not work after this method. Other than that no problems thus far.
Thanks for the shout out Turilo .

So what do we do about updates? Tried using Kies to no avail. I wish had updated first before rooting. Foolishly, no backup before flashing.

Is it a permanent root?
Also, as someone asked earlier, can you issue step-by-step instructions?
I installed Goo Manager, and then went into menu>Install OpenRecoveryScript
After selecting "Yes" at the first prompt, I get a new screen asking if I'm sure about installing the script. The filename is openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.1-t0ltecan.img
Is that the file for the Rogers version?
Secondly, assuming it installs the TWRP recovery, which I prefer, how do you then install supersu or superuser?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Peter
P.S. PERMANENT ROOT is critical for me ... as I think it would be for most users.

Yes the openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.1-t0ltecan.img is the one for our devices I gave all my required info to bigbiff for him to add our devices. After that installs do a clean backup no info like Google etc of stock rom with TWRP recovery, than make sure supersu0.97.zip is in root of phone or external sd card then flash that using TWRP. Now you have full root!

Many thanks for such a quick reply. I understand everything except "do a clean backup no info like Google etc."
Can you explain that statement? I know how to do Nandroids (have done 100s). It's the "no info like Google etc." that confuses me.
Thanks,

Telus Model - SGH-i317M

i got pretty good at flashing stuff for my galaxy nexus, but now as a note II owner I feel like a total noob.
i have the Telus Model - SGH-i317M. is that the same model for At&T ... all At&T flashing/rooting guides would work for me?
can I flash the international firmware? by doing so, will that mean I get official samsung updates faster?
cheers,

Cf-auto root roots your phone, it doesn't install any recoveries. Here's the thread, just download the Canadian version and flash with Odin (yes it works with telus/bell/rogers) . http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33854391
Then, if you want to flash custom roms then you need to install either Cwm or twrp recovery. Recommend twrp.
You can install twrp by installing goo manager via play store or download the file to flash with Odin.

After you're rooted, if you install goo manager, it can install twrp automatically. I'm guessing there must be some variance to have a Canadian version.
Just search for nandroid backup for twrp recovery which is a complete backup. Lots of guides and YouTube videos if you search for it or someone can point you to one.

No problem. Well first I would only install firmwares that are in the i317 Devs section.

Custom roms are firmwares. There are some roms that are ported from international firmwares and made to work for our version of note 2. All the compatible roms/firmwares are in the AT&T dev's section here, just make sure you read all the instructions and you can always ask them the question in they're thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1874
In any case, I would do a lot more research and reading. There are bunch of guides and tutorials.

I just started playing with the Galaxy Note 2's as well this weekend (all Rogers i317m). Rooted 5 of them, and installed custom roms on 3 of them. All in all much easier than jailbreaking iphones. That said, this forum has been a wealth of information. I've tried a few roms and really like the International Stock Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016575. I will try Clean Rom next.
This is what I've done, and it's been a snap :
1. Put your phone into Odin Download mode, and root the phone using ODIN and the cwm6-root-note2.tar file (clockworkmod-there's some youtube videos on how to do this)
2. Download the custom rom you wish to flash to your phone (eg download directory)
3. Boot your phone into CWM recovery mode
4. Make a BACKUP rom of your existing phone (good for recovery, if you didn't back up all your contacts, sms, apps, etc....this is like TIMEMACHINE and saves to your phone's CWM directory).
5. Erase / Wipe Data (this does not erase your photos/videos, just basically the OS).
6. Flash ROM from ZIP (from your download directory)
7. Erase cache
8. Reboot to your new Custom Rom!
9. If you don't like the new Custom Rom, you can always boot back into CWM and restore from the BACKUP rom.
10. I highly recommend looking into Titanium Backup and SMS Backup, as well as syncing your contacts to GMAIL.
Good luck

all I want is the phone to be completely stock as if I have just pulled it out of the box
I dont want it rooted or any sort of rom, I need all stock files because I have no backup of any sort also from what I can tell I may need samsung drivers and Odin I have no idea which I need or where to acquire the correct files...

I would flash the Telus stock which is root injected from this thread. You may need to set the csc to Telus. Flash with odin. You can easily remove the root if everything works.

I was recently asked to post some threads here on XDA with the tutorials I have on my site. As time permits I will be posting a series of threads here to the Q&A section that will hopefully answer most questions that might come up.
If you can't find your answer in one of my threads I would highly recommend BluesRulez One Stop FAQ Thread. It is an awesome resource and has answers to just about every question I've seen come up!
__________________
This thread details the process of how to root your device without having to flash a full stock ROM. This method works for the Sprint, Boost and Virgin Samsung Galaxy S2 (SPH-D710, SPH-D710BST and SPH-D710VMUB).
This method uses an Odin One-Click Kernel to install a kernel that includes a Custom Recovery. Once booted into the Custom Recovery you can then flash Superuser which will root your phone and give you Superuser access.
Prerequisites:
A PC running Windows with the Samsung Mobile Drivers Installed. The Samsung Mobile Drivers are available here.
Any One-Click Kernel (preferably from the Android version you will be using, i.e. GB, ICS or JB).
All Sprint One-Click Recovery kernels can be found here.
For this particular tutorial I used the following kernels:
Gingerbread: Chris41g's EL26 Stock CWM5 Repack
Ice Cream Sandwich: Agat63's tFI27 Stock Recovery Repack (rev 2)
Jelly Bean: Agat63's Source-Built GB27 Recovery
Superuser (or SuperSU, MIUI Security, and etc) in a flashable zip, saved on your Internal or External SD Card.  For this method I used SuperSU v1.25 (but any SU in a flashable ZIP should work). You can download several different versions here.
Although not required it is recommended that you have Samsung Kies installed on your PC as well. You can download Samsung Kies here.
Side-Effects:
This method will trigger the Yellow Triangle upon start-up and will increase your Odin count.
It will also change your startup screen to look like the International GS2 startup screen.
Both of these side-effects are very easy to overcome due to the hard work of Chainfire and Garwynn. You can get TriangleAway from Chainfire's thread here.
For the rest of the tutorial please visit my site: www.rwilco12.com
Enjoy!

First..well 2nd to you!! Awesome work RW ..your time and dedication is GREATLY appreciated my friend!
Will any of these methods work with FL24? I'm new to rooting Samsungs and am used to simply rooting via exploits through ADB. I have the phone rooted (temp rooted?) via the exploit in Framaroot and am trying to get a custom recovery installed next to flash a ROM. Thanks!

Does this exe. push the kernel/rom for me to flash automatically, or do I add that to the sdcard before I start?

The Kernel One-Click flashes the kernel and recovery together. They are combined on the E4GT.

You might have to turn SU on depending on which version you flashed. Open the app and see if under settings you see something like "Enable SuperUser" and make sure it's enabled.
If that doesn't fix it we may need to try another zip with a different set of symlinks. Either way, we're here for you and will get you squared away.

If you're asking - Can I flash VM builds on the Sprint D710, the answer is - yes. Did it when I tested the builds and everything worked properly.
If you're asking - Can I flash a VM build and be on VM service? Obviously you'll need to be activated to their service and provisioned properly. That's when you'd need to make sure that mmsc/apn/nv data is captured. I don't know if VM is a byod provider. (write that shiz down)

Couple Q's
Has anyone done this yet and how is it working out?
I am already rooted but on the stock FL24 and stock kernel, is that a problem?
Thanks for all this, I have been searching for 2 days and pulling my hair out to get this done. :good:

Yes. Many, many people have used this method successfully.
There's nothing wrong with a stock kernel, it just doesn't have a custom recovery packed into it or any kernel tweaks.
But I am confused... If you're already rooted why are you pulling your hair out?

Well mostly because I'm a noob lol. I heard also that if you do a factory reset with stock kernel you will brick it. But I want the extra options anyway. and really want to flash aJB ROM. Thank you very much for quick response, I shall give this a go in the morning.

K. Before you dive in too much further I would recommend doing a little more research. This device had had issues in the past that have made it very easy to brick. You should be very careful.
As a side note - This thread is a how to root thread but it sounds like you're already rooted. I don't know that there's any reason to reroot your device. You don't actually have to be rooted to get on JB either. You could just flash a one-click of a JB ROM.

thanks! worked on my Fido GS4
Which method is preferable, Motochopper or CF-Auto-Root. I'm not concerned which is easier or faster, just wondering if they gain ROOT in different ways and if one method has pro's compared to the other.
I know CF-Auto-Root doesn't flash a custom recovery, but that is easy enough with GooManager.
I would recommend to use this method that work fine on my bell s4 and didn't trip the counter and keep mine status official.

Note 2 with 4.3(MK6) root and remove knox!

First of, let me say thanks to these people: Chainfire, upndwn4par, mjwhirly, dicksteele, and many others from this forum. Thank you CWM team and TWRP team for provide many great things. Thank you whoever developed this DE-SAMSUNGNIZER_KNOX_REMOVAL_SCRIPT_V1.0. Thank you Samsung for great device. And last but not least, thank you ANDROID!
I just recently acquired note 2 att, with 4.3(MK6) for my brother. I just want to unlock this device to use on other networks but it seems that you have to downgrade to 4.1.1 to do it without paid any service. If any one have other way please tell me, thanks in advance.
First thing I did is to root by using Chainfire auto method but upon reboot, I got message about "Unfortunately, Supersu has stopped" and a message from security try to access...I went back to recovery mode to apply Update Supersu 1.65, 1.94 but fail every time because it cannot verified. I messed around with odin and other few more time, now my knox count is up to 3. Then I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538991, this gave me an idea to try it out, why not. Remember that thread is for galaxy s3, you need to download cwm or twrp file accordingly to your Note 2, I used this "openrecovery-twrp-2.7.0.1-t0lteatt.img.tar"
Other files you need to have before proceed are: any odin 3.x.x will do, update supersu 1.94 from chainfire site, and DE-SAMSUNGNIZER_KNOX_REMOVAL_SCRIPT_V1.0 from here http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23329332407586269
Stepsplease read few times before try it out, I am not responsible for your device!)
Put phone in download mode.
Start odin on your computer, click on PDA then select which ever recovery file that you dowloaded to load it in odin.
Now conect your phone to computer that odin is running. Make sure "Re-Partition" is "uncheck" then click "Start." From here is what I did, as soon as Odin done with it, make sure Odin say it "PASS" which mean you are successfully. The phone reboot itself, I hold down combination keys "home + volume up + Power" to get back to recovery mode right away. I do not know what happen if your phone reboot fine without enter recovery mode, I did not try, so I do not know. It maybe boot up fine but you won't have root/supesu for sure. My knowledge on this thing is poor. I am newbie to this, so forgive me if I say thing wrong.
Lo and behold, my twrp is up and running, from here I just install two files: Update Supersu v1.94.zip and DE-SAMSUNGNIZER_KNOX_REMOVAL_SCRIPT_V1.0.zip. Restarted the phone, and no more of this "Unfortunately, Supersu has stopped". I checked Supersu to make sure it installed properly, and yes it was.
I just hope it will help with some of you that is having problem with trying to root Note 2.
I am done for now, will try to unlock next.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S3 - T999 - Emergency - Bricked Phone

Hello XDA Community,
Well I am a beginner in terms of trying to utilize anything my T-Mob. Samsung Galaxy S3 has to offer, tried to place CM11 onto my S3 but I think I just bricked my device.
I got to the part where my phone was unrooted and I had all the files ready for ZIP. I actually used TOWELROOT to unroot it, got SuperSU & permissions, I think I may have bypassed KNOX, not 100% sure.
I had the latest TWRP - it boots into it fine but when I tried to install CM11 w/ GAPPs - it fails to install. I keep getting the error that the binary doesn't work. I was reading on the forums that one had to change the d2tmob into d2can - tried it and put the new zip back into the SD card, I even tried to put CM10.2 thinking that maybe the "stable version" might be better than the nightly.
Anyhow, I was following a guide and I deleted everything (INCLUDING MY OS) except for things in my SD Card.
I cannot recover anything because I backed up my phone onto my phone - which was wiped...real genius....
I am kicking myself, I haven't been able to use my phone for 4 days now, I've been trying to fix it myself but I have NO CLUE in terms of what to do next.
I keep reading about ODIN and booting something else but I am extremely distraught over the whole ordeal and I do not know what to do.
I can boot into download mode (down button + middle + power) but my skills are extremely rudimentary - I am sorry to bother the community but I really do need help.
I have trouble understanding any difficult things - I kind of need the instructions to be broken down to like "Plug phone in now" - do that...and etc. Any links that might help are muchly appreciated.
I just want any OS now - even if it is stock but I need simple instructions ~ I am sorry, I really do not know where else to turn to....pretty sure my phone is bricked (soft bricked, idk) - but I do not know where else to turn - please help XDA community.
So if there's anything someone could dig up or do to help me fix my phone....I would be eternally grateful.
Download the stock or root66 firmware from my thread stickied in development. I suggest reading that and other stickies as well btw.
After downloading, unzip. The result should be a .tar.md5 file.
Boot download mode
Plug in phone, open odin 3.09. (Download in my signature)
Click AP and select the firmware you just got.
After the check finishes, click start. When it says PASS it'll reboot and you're done.

I hope it's okay that I do not have any OS on it. I will definitely let you know how it goes.
Quick Question: download mode is Down Key + Middle + Power.
And AP should be in Odin right?
Also...for the boxes - what should be checked in ODIN 3.09 when I am about to put in the AP thing?

Okay, so now that my phone is back on Stock (I used the root66 method), I have SuperSU but when I go to the app, it gives me the message
"if you have a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM, that can be used to install the SU binary. This is recommended for HTC devices. How would you like to install the SU Binary, with Normal as an option & TWRP/CWM as another option.
I am trying to see how to properly root my phone in the next step.
After I root my phone, I hope to get flash a ROM.
I am sorry to ask again DocHoliday77 but could you please help me once again in terms of what to do next?
I think your instructions were really simple (layman's terms) and it helped me debrick my device.
I just do not know how to flash a ROM, let's just say for purposes that I wanted the Carbon ROM - how would I proceed once I get to the step with SuperSU's message? Please help
If your intentions are to flash a rom, you don't need to be rooted before hand. Just boot into twrp/cwm, factory reset and flash the rom. That's it!
As to your specific question, I always choose Normal for that option.

Just a heads up, I hear they may have solved it, but the latest cm roms haven't worked well without the 4.4.2 modems. If you flash and find you have signal/connection/imei issues, factory reset and flash an older version.

Seems like a silly question but how do I get CWM/TWRP?
I had booted into TWRP before but I kept getting the binary updater error when I tried to flash CM11.
Is there an easy way to get CWM - I think that would be my route of preference now because of the sour experience with TWRP.
here is a link to CWM advanced philz touch recovery. its CWM but with xtra options and you use 'touch' instead of volume buttons.
if you want to check it out.
its a flashable zip.

Sorry, was just reading up on how to flash PhilzCWM with a GS3-t999 but it seems a bit complicated.
I'm sorry, I am extremely computer illiterate and I have to apologize for that.
My goal is to get a custom ROM - I already have the ROM I want downloaded and such but I just do not have anyway to flash it.
Is there any easier way to get to where I want to be?
Please let me know & if you could provide simple layman's terms, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
if you can get to cwm recvery to flash a zip file , then
https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2lte/
the 2nd zip file from the bottom is the latest i believe. (philz_touch_6.486-d2lte.zip).
click on that and it should download to your phone. then go into CWM and choose that file to flash. reboot phone. then go back into recovery and you should now have 'cwm advanced philz touch recovery' on your phone.
then you can flash your ROM from there.
hope that made sense.

Hey I finally installed a custom ROM onto my Galaxy S3!
I just used TWRP and flashed it. I've been messing around with all the combinations so far ~ it's really amazing, it's like I have a new phone.
Quick Question: say I wanted to flash another ROM, other than the one I am currently using.
Can I just download another ROM onto my SD card and flash it via TWRP again OR
Do I have to restore the phone back to it's original stock OS and redo the TWRP thing again?

Sorry I haven't replied sooner. Haven't been home this weekend.
For the most part, yes, just download the new rom and flash. No need to revert to stock or reflash recovery except in certain situations.
Unless you are flashing a very similar rom, it's always a good idea to factory reset. You can get away with "dirty flashing" sometimes, but if you have problems, youll have to reset.
This is required if going between different based roms such as Touchwiz and cm.

After the check finishes, click start. When it says PASS it'll reboot and you're done.

Hi, everybody!
The minus page says that the file is not avaible or does not exist, when I try to download the original ICS Rom of the T999 T-Mobile.
Please, fix this!
Thanks!

I don't recommend installing a stock ICS ROM if your phone has a 4.3 bootloader.
Yeah I did the ICS on the 4.3 bootloader. Don't do it, it hurts......
