Volume button placement - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Am I the only one who accidentally pushes the volume rocker when trying to push the power button because naturally my finger wants to hold the left side of the phone across from the power button for support... thinking of disabling the volume rocker or something.....

Same, dont find the volume buttons a problem at all, although i've only had Samsung smartphones.

Only problem I ran into was when I switched from an iPhone 4 to a GS2 and couldn't remember where the lock button was. I've gotten used to it.
Stock ICS on my S3

Well would you rather 2-handing the device so you can reach the top and press the power button up there? Lucky samsung dodged a bullet with that one, you'll get used to it on the right side. Unless you are left handed.

Yup, I am left handed.... and that is probably why its not an issue for most.

squeaky power button?

Ive had my evo for a couple of weeks now and my power button tends to squeak when I press it. it usually only happens when I have it palmed in one hand and press it.
anyone else have this problem? or know how I can fix it?

It's due to the power button pressing on the plastic around it, from being used so much. I have the same issue with my Vol- button due to using it so much to flash in recovery.

[Q]uestion - Change wake phone button?

I promise - I watched the video and searched the hell out of this before posting...
can you change the wake phone function from the power button to, say, the volume keys and/or the home soft button?
thanks in advance. please don't slaughter me if this is posted elsewhere!

Idk where it is at in the samsung devices but usually you can change the key layout by editing user-key layout you can also remap the search button to any app.

i can see how that would be useful but i couldn't find it and moreover, i think when the phone goes into sleep-mode, those soft keys are disabled. i guess i am looking for a way to either wake the phone with the volume keys - or - somehow enable those soft buttons so i can hit the home one and wake up my phone.

You would have to give the keys a set wake option. I can do it for htc devices but i don't know much about samsung devices. You would want a volume rocker wake I'm guessing or menu and back wake right. You can also use an app called widget locker it enables you to wake the device from volume rocker etc.
thanks again for the thoughts.
i think i'll patiently wait a few weeks for people smarter than me to start writing apps specific to this phone.
have a great day!
I think this will come in handy since some of us don't want to wear out the power button but be able to use both. The only problem I might see using the volume button is when you are listening to something with your headphones. Would pressing the volume button be changing the volume or waking the phone? hahaha..i'm sure there will be options.
The latest version of Juggernaut has that as an option, if you're into flashing custom roms.

That is correct, Juggernaut 2.6 has this feature and flashing is pretty simple.
i use this option on Juggernaut too. its great cuz i cant always reach the power button even tho i have huge hands.
which ROM except Juggernaut has this option, I mean waking phone up by sound button?
Darkside's Dewizzed does. and it's a GREAT rom.
I actually hate the 'feature'. I listen to music lots with my phone, and having to double tap the volume rocker to adjust volume sucks, and then it turns on the screen. Since half the time it's in my pocket and i'm pushing buttons through that... long story short i've pocket texted a couple times.
/rant.
Yes, and you can do this without rooting and without installing a custom rom by using the application widget locker, which has an option to wake the phone using the volume keys. Otherwise several roms support this such as the Darkside Dewizzed rom.
Epic bump, but Josh from mobile tech videos gave my phone a solution like this when my phone had an internal shortage. He set the volume+ button as the wake button and it did involve the key layout as someone in this thread had said earlier. Ill be back with a link to an xda thread that had the same idea but for a different device.
I bump this because even though he changed the button layout, I completely forgot about it and flashed a different rom :S now I seek a solution.

Recovery

Hey guys,
I was just thinking about a recovery menu, to install roms, update.zip etc.
But now i noticed there are no physical buttons to select something.
We can go only up and down with the volume buttons, but we cannot select anything?
Correct me if I'm wrong.
The selection is made with power button ;-)
Um you can post this in the general section.

Your post makes absolutely no sense. Could be a couple possibilites here. Are you talking about holding the power button and volume buttons down to get into recovery? Are you asking if ROM Manager and Quickboot can get you into recovery? I have no clue to what you are asking or trying to say. If your talking about how to get into recovery that wasn't what the OP wanted to know. He wanted to know how to make a selection once you are in recovery.
To the OP CWM Recovery's code can be written to use whatever buttons are available. Once the phone drops a custom recovery will be written for it in a matter of minutes if it hasn't been done already. Same with superuser.
Actual development only, you're posting in the wrong forum

He is referring to the fact that the power button acts as the selection button.
Recovery is accessed like the Nexus S, by powering on the device using Volume Up+Power. Options are navigated via volume up/down and selected using the power button. To go back, one has to scroll to the bottom of the list where the last option is back and select that using the power button. Nothing too complicated about it.
how is this phone any different than all the other android phones with capacitive buttons on the bottom? all other android phones cannot use the capacitive buttons in recovery, so i dont see how this one is different. like the atrix, you use vol up/down, power button, and then back is at the bottom of the list.
there's not a single thing different about the galaxy nexus with respect to this.

That's not true. Many models have a functioning 'back' capacitive button in recovery. The G2/DZ being one of them.

droid 1 is just annoying using the keyboard but the recovery is in portrait. Bleh. One great thing about the G2 is using the trackpad for recovery.
Don't forget that recovery is just a very slimmed down version of Android. If they wanted to, they could implement on-screen buttons etc. just like capacitive buttons can currently be used if implemented.
why not have the Team Win Recovery 2.0 on it?

Phones like the SGS2 have 3 buttons - the volume buttons, home and power button. That lets the power button function as a permanent back button, with the home button taking the role of 'select'. Recovery can function in both 3 button and 2 button modes, with the power buttons function changing respectively. Nothing overly complicated.
The atrix can use all the buttons in recovery. Im sure the button issue is a non issue. It will be software or the typical volume and power hardware interface.
I voided my warranty and your nexus.
Fascinate could use all four capacitive buttons which saves wear and tear on the physical buttons.

Me too! Very useful when out at concerts etc. I found that the constant movement would cause the power button to be hit, then screen would stay on for a minute with contact through thin trousers/shorts.
Eventually I found phone was quite warm and battery was slightly reduced.
And I have no idea what the volume wake does, but I have left it enabled.
How about wake up with volume keys

Basically, the file gpio-keys.kl contains four lines corresponding to both volume keys, power button and the home button.
The zip I posted removes the WAKE from just the power button. So the volume keys behave in the same way they would without the modification.
The zip the op posted removes the WAKE from the volume keys and the home button, but not the power button. (so the volume keys will no longer wake the device).
I don't know what this difference means, I assume it may have something to do with volume changing when listening to music? But I have no idea.
Does this clear it up?
But the volume keys dont wake up the phone by default right?

But they were set to WAKE, so I left them that way.

Enable wake on volume key press? I honestly don't know how, according to the file that I modified they already do - but we know that they don't actually visibly affect the device.

I think acccidently pressing the power button is much easier than accidently pressing the home button, so arguably, you would save more power disabling the power button, and not the home button?
ThankĀ“s for this, love it.
i have a case on my s3 so pressing the power button is eliminated accidentally, however the home button i seem to press accidentally every time i pull it out of my pocket or even just shuffling it around.
Hey,can't test it because i have cm9!

Besides having to wake the phone, the power button is useless to me. I use apps like RomToolBox to restart and go into recovery. Goo.im App can go into recovery as well. When the phone dies during business ours, which never happens, I can plug it into a usb and boot up by holding vol+and vol- to boot or just put into my cars dock and it boots without power button. I use CM based roms with volume rocker wake. besides that, the phone also wakes from unplugging and plugging chargers...Power button doesn't really matter to me as long as volume rocker wake is enable.
im interested in this as well, my power buttom died once already and got it fixed, but I try to press it as little as possible.
so op, your power button isnt 'stuck' but totally broken? im just scared the my button will stick and stay in a bootloop. Btw you can use 'spob' app to wake the phone using the proximity sensor. Right now im using switch pro and lock the phone and spob to wake it - dont have to use the powee button at all haha
