Kies update about 1 Gb and OTA update about 13 Mbyte!!!! - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

please help me
i just purchased my note 2
i was checking for update OTA and it tells me there update about 13Mbyte but i didn't update with OTA
then i tried KIES and told me there is an update as per attached pic... and it make download for about 30 Mbyts then it start to download about ! GB
So...OTA update is about 13 Mbyte ..while kies update about 1 GB ..which one i should go !!!!!!?????

I would prefer the OTA on the phone , however to answer your question, KIES has downloaded the whole ROM for the new version instead of just the OTA part and this is similar to update implementations by all Phone companies (including Apple, shhhh)

I'd prefer neither of them, i will go for downloading my latest country stock rom and flash it using odin or mobile odin, this will give me the advantage of keeping root, and to have the full rom to flash any time i want, besides it will be faster than kies, less problematic
Just take a look here :

Unrooting using DooMLord's method did not erase kernel version's string

Hi, I had a galaxy w i8150,
baseband version: I8150DXKJ5
build nr: gingerbread.DXKJ5
droid version: 2.3.5
my kernel version: 2.6.35.7-perf-I8150DXKJ5-CL692718 [email protected] #3
I've rooted using DooMLorD's method of easy root toolkit.....
I try the OTA update to get the latest 2.3.6 from samsung but failed (probably due to being rooted)
Also using Kies failed.....
So I tried to unroot the phone using DooMLorD's method as well....since it's quite simple...
it was successful.....but then I noticed the kernel version was not updated to remove "[email protected] #3" part....
then when I tried to use OTA to update to 2.3.6 again it failed......
I currently re-rooted using DooMLorD's script....anyone can help provide a quick and simple guide for me to go to 2.3.6 official stocked rom?
Flash with Odin
this thread has everything you need:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467128
you can start solving problems by reading the forums
thanks for the fast reply,
having read thru the thread you provided,
I still cant figure out which is the stocked official 2.3.6 ROM
Seems only these are available:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21875828&postcount=2
none of them are the code I'm looking for which is I8150DXKL1
is it not possible to upgrade to official ROMs anymore after I rooted the phone?
What error does Kies give?
It usually fails only due to mismatch of Product Code with Phone FW.....so, if I still Original Stock FW....should not fail!!!
Except, Kies sucks, and you will be able to flash newest FW with ODIN.
Also, try Check Fus from Market.....it will check for latest FW....and allow Dl to flash with ODIN.

Kies just says update failed with unexpected error....-_-"
indeed Kies sux....
am trying to download the firmware now from sammobile.com
however due to slow internet connection and hotfile's time out limit, keep disconnected...darn.....will try this "Fus" u mentioned...thanks
I ask about Kies failure becoz sometimes, nearly always, Kies does indeed download the full update.....
and stores it for download to your phone, in a temp folder.
If Kies upgrade fails, this FW will still be on your PC, as per this guide:
How to Backup Firmware from Kies Upgrade Process.....
You could then flash this with ODIN.
I had a humble contribution there......
On my PC, after failed Kies Upgrade, I looked for the downloaded FW, and found it, as below:
I used your guide above to find the Kies firmware upgrade download folder, which is still on my PC....
in a folder called .......C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp3325.tmp.zipfolder
Here are two files,
I8150XXKK1_I8150METKK1_I8150XXKK1_HOME.tar.md5
SS_DL.dll

If you have a failed Kies upgrade, you may still have the upgrade .tar file, and it can be flashed with ODIN.
wow cool info, thanks....anyway I've downloaded thru Check Fus downloader you suggested earlier anyway ;-) thanks a lot for all the useful info.....gonna try using ODIN flash soon when I have the time, thanks!
for the benefit of simplicity, I've added my android rooting pack.zip file in this post so anyone can simply download it and have all the exe needed for rooting and also for flashing firmware after rooted....and also for unrooting....
I've added guides from this forum saved as html so one don't have to go online to read
all this is made possible thanks to irishpancake for suggesting CheckFus downloader
THE-E for posting all the great and useful guide on rooting/unrooting and also posting the files necessary for flashing
all of the files I've downloaded and used for rooting/unrooting/flashing to latest official firmware are zipped in the attached file....
so one time download of this zip is sufficient for future firmware upgrade & re-rooting + unrooting using the recovery method....
Good stuff raysky.....and very helpful
ur very welcome!!

Android 4.1.1 Note 2 -> OTA update fails

Hi All,
Root --> Custom TWM recovery using Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Toolkit v3.0.0
278 MB sprint OTA update fails on 4.1.1
Unrooted, and Flashed Stock Rom via Odin.
Now 278 MB OTA update still fails.
1. Don't know how to make the phone go back to stock without losing all my apps so the OTA update will succeed.
2. Don't really care how I install the update, just want the latest Sprint update.
Searched all over forums, no clear indication in found threads on:
A. Which is latest Stock Sprint Firmware ROM to force update or flash manually?
B. How to recover back to stock (so OTA succeeds).
C. What will latest update push my version to, is it 4.1.2?
Any help guise?

Not exactly true. I was able to install the previous OTA while rooted, but had to have the factory recovery to do it.
(by the way, I am also having the same issue. Sprint told me it was because of a conflict with google and some of their proprietary software in the ROM, and that it is happening a lot.)
I am in the same boat. I want to update but dont want to fully install original rom just to update. I dont want to loose all my apps and settings I have.
Just got my layout the way I like it. I tried ota keeper and that did not work. Any know how I can ota while keeping my apps and settings.

I'm looking to do the same on my Sprint GN2. Ever since the update came out, I've just been hitting "skip install" which pops up several times a day.

You need to unroot. Use triangle away to reset counter and then flash stock again and then factory reset. If your not rooted then I dont know.

Since you've rooted you will not be able to update official firmwares from samsung through kies or OTA.
If you still require to update through kies first you've to unroot and the device status to normal. Follow the below instructions and you'll be fine.
1) installed pre-rooted firmware or root it again
2) Use Triangle away to reset counter Mod
3) Use titanium backup to wipe data from Enterprise Sysscope and Sysscope ( Sysscope may be frozen so, de-frost it and then wipe data).
4) Format the Ext SD card as it may contain some backups which might trigger the modified status
5) Use Root explorer to delete busybox from system/xbin/busybox (Since full Unroot will not delete busybox, the Sysscope will scan the phone for this after boot and change the Status to modified)
6) Full unroot using Super user
7) Reboot and enjoy
Hi All,
I'm facing a similar issue on my Note II.
I used Dr Ketan's guide to root and reverted the firmware to a UK stock early this year but has since gotten a
"Your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via Kies"
My device is now unrooted and counter is reset (status is normal).
According to my research, this could be due to a CSC mismatch but can't find anything wrong with it.
This is what I'm on at the moment,
AP: N7100XXDME6
CP: N7100XXDMF1
CSC: N7100OXDMF1
It's the lastest UK stock firmware but I had to install it using Odin instead of Kies.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.
That's strange, i have a rooted phone, made with chainfire autoroot method, and i just upgrade the firmware with kies without any trouble. No unroot and no wipe before update. It's a stock firmware with root.

Try using * # 272 * your IMEI #
This will pop up a list of CSC. Choose your original one and it should be okay.
Note: Changing the CSC using this method will factory reset your phone without any warning
Download and install Kies 3. Connect the phone. Kies will inform you that the connection failed. Leave the device plugged in and go to the menu bar, tools, reinstall device drivers. Leave the phone connected while the device drivers reinstall and it should work from there.

[Q] rooted T-Mobile Note 2 OTA Update install issue

I have a rooted T-Mobile Note 2 that is stock, other than being rooted and disabling/uninstalling some apps via Titanium Backup.
These past 2 weeks I have been trying to figure out how to get the OTA update installed. I am currently on 4.1.2 and manually added the 4g LTE radio a while back.
What, where, and how should I look for info that might help me figure out why I can't install the update? Thanks!
Seriously no anwer to this question? I want to know this too. I don't want to download whole manual roms and flash sometimes for just 28 mb update ota it takes 2 gb for manual flash rom. Right niw I have Note 2 running on 4.3

If on 4.1, you should download Mr Robisons pre rooted 4.3 image if you want to remain stock rooted. This will be the easiest way. You will need odin and a good usb cable.
Upgrading using this method will also update you to the 4.3 knox bootloader as well though, but this will ensure ypu are running as closely to stock as possible.
If already on 4.3, you may need to uninstall supersu and busybox in order to pick up any ota updates. Theres also root cloak if you happen to use xposed. Might be worth checking into. As far as OTA patches go, I wouldnt stress all that much. Any major update generally comes as a full system update.
Otherwise, look at some stock based custom roms. They are awesome alternatives to sticking with an oem build. You tend to get more features / speed when using a custom rom.

Thanks for nice detailed answer. I flashed stock 4.4.2 from sammobile on my Note 2 and since it is just flasheed it don't have any root access so I checked OTA and it was saying OS is modified try to get update from Kies.

How do I install 4.4.4 when KNOX is tripped and I get the annoying cant update bc mod

I need some help downloading the new software update.
I get an error when I try the software update.
Is there anything I can do to update to the new formware?
What program or method are you using to try and update your phone?
If you have rooted your phone you won't be able to do the over the air update. I would suggest going here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ and downloading the newest version for your phone. Use Odin to flash it in the phone section. That's the AP line. This will install the update for you. Then you will have to root your phone again.
Or I have mega links in general section to avoid sammobiles crappy 100kb speed
What does your device status say?

I used Samsung Kies 3 and did a "Firmware Upgrade and Initialization" under Tools and that brought me up from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 while being rooted.
I did this same method on a 4.3 firmware non-rooted. It took it from 4.3 to 4.4.4. I hope this will help you.
