Hi' everybody
This is my first post, from my newly bought Galaxy Note. II.
I am still playing with it, setting it up, and getting to know it - but so far the experience has been: WOW ! Good work Samsung!
I do have a question though... I have activated the function where it automatically dims or turns off the screen when im not looking at it... But it does nothing when I look away? what am I doing wrong?

Hi! Congrats on your purchase, fantastic phone
I know what you mean. This feature sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I have it activated just in case, because you need 1) enough light and 2) to have your face in front of the phone. Sometimes I just put my phone down after reading a message and it still stays on... Yes... while looking at the ceiling in my house.......... hmmm... Maybe my ceiling is haunted! Either that, or Samsung didn't do a fantastic job yet on the software.
You're not doing anything wrong. The software TRIES to look for your face... If it doesn't, it turns it off... If the software isn't sure, then it keeps it on just in case.
I hope I've helped!
It is call, "smart stay" function

Hey guys, on my nexus when im typing anything I turn it to landscape mode for the bigger keyboard and sometimes it takes ages for the screen to follow - sometimes it doesn't do it at all. Anyone else have this prob?
It is slow on purpose.

So that if you are in bed and turn sideways it doesn't just keep switching, and other similar situations.
No guys, I mean REALLY slow, as in 5-10 seconds. Sometimes I have to keep movin it around untill it turns. Today however its really playing up and not turning at all.. haha

I find that actually it's the exact opposite.
When I want it to rotate, I need to wait ages (sometimes tapping the screen while waiting makes it faster).
When I lie in bed, it very often rotates when I don't want it to, and then I wait ages for it to switch back to the previous mode.
That pretty much forces me to disable automatic rotation every time I am in the bed. Whatever they tried to achieve with this, either they failed completely or I am somehow mysteriously missing the point..

Mine has been staying, and being used to the HTC Desire spinning instantly it was a bit strange at first. As regards to the tapping, there are some modes where tapping is what rotates it and it wont until you do.
Same damn concern very annoying

I mean in applications like the stock Browser. I'm not 100% sure, but 99% that it rotates faster if I tap the screen as compared to just waiting.

it's not slow
it's the smooth transition animation (like windows IE)
you will need some 3rd party tweak to disable it

OP is talking about the screen taking awhile to finally rotate when he tilts the phone. He isn't talking about the phone not tilting at all.

I love this phone...but for my purposes, having it on vibrate = having it on silent. I missed TWO job interview calls having my phone on vibrate in my pants! I barely had time to call 'em back today to set up an in-person!!!!
I found a program a few weeks ago to handle my volume problems....is there a program that handles the vibration problems??? I guess I'm one step away from changing the vibration to just one long vibrate for texts and calls....but this soft motor probably still won't help it out!
Anything? Or am I doomed to putting this on craigslist and waiting for the next big phone???

I think it agitates everyone pretty well actually.
To be on topic, though, I don't know of any apps, or software mods at all really, that will increase the power on the vibration. That's a hardware thing.

Really? Seems great to me. Way better than my previous HTC phones.
Apparently Light Flow has settings where you can set particular vibrations for particular notifications (i.e. how long & how frequent you want them). Haven't tested it myself, but I've read about it. Link. Perhaps if Light Flow doesn't work, try Sound Manager V2?

I tried light flow but I could never seem to get it to play nice w/Handcent.. It'd always stutter my ringtone. Even when I turned notifying for Handcent off...
On a table, it works fine. On a bed or couch or pocket...it's garbage. And I really didn't notice it until last week when I needed it on vibrate. Now, I wish I'd noticed it during the 30 day period of returning the phone....
Shoot!
Problem: Cannot turn on the screen by pressing the power button sometimes. The screen is black or very dim, I cannot tell. One can see nothing on the screen, and it doesn’t accept any touch input, either. The phone still rings if there’s an incoming call. If this happens, the following several presses (about 10 - 20) on the power button will probably lead to a reboot. The “screen auto-rotate” and the proximity sensor may fail after the reboot, but will recover after a manual reboot.
Frequency: Fewer with higher Rom version. About once per day for 4.3.
Other description:
The problem frequently happens when I just take the phone outside my house/office, and seldom happens when the phone just stays somewhere.
The problem seems to be irrelevant to the remaining battery capacity or the uptime, but it never happens when charging.
The problem seems to be irrelevant to the Apps installed.
The problem seldom happens in the first 3-4 days after flashing a Rom, but happens more and more frequently as time goes by. My guess is some cache is stuffed by some trash, which causes the problem. The phone may be fine as long as the trash can be cleaned up on a regular basis.
I manually reboot my phone at most every two days.
Solutions tried, but don’t work
Flashing official ROMs 4.0.4, 4.1.1, 4.1.2, 4.2.2 and 4.3 following the procedure “adb reboot bootloader; fastboot oem unlock; flash-all; fastboot oem lock”, without google wallet, not rooted.
Turning off the auto-brightness control, as suggested by some post on the Internet.
Does it look like it goes to standby normally or does the screen show gibberish and then turns off?

Thank you very much.
I think it's standing-by normally even through the screen is black (or very dim, I cannot tell), since it rings if there's an incoming call. I can see nothing from the screen, and I don't think the screen accepts any touch input, either.
Does this answer your question? Thank you.

Was just asking if you had gibberish yes or no. In that case i've got a different issue than you (Suspecting f*cked GPU).
Have you tried a different ROM/Kernel combination maybe it's related to that.

No, I just tried the official ROMs. Any suggestion?
Perhaps it's just busy in the background and running low on RAM. Give LagFix a try. Sorry can't link atm as I am on mobile...

LagFix does NOT help in my case. Any other suggestions? Thanks.
I've also had this blank screen with calls still ring issue for as long as I can remember, nearly 2.5 yrs.
I've always suspected it's my ROM and so I'd try out another ROM'S, BUT no other ROM works like how I'd like, so I always come back to my ROM.
It doesn't happen every single day, but it does happen very often.
I've tried using apps that auto reboot daily, but eventually this blank screen issue will return.
Unfortunately I can't seem to find any solution, so I just put up with it, it's like the 1 only flaw with my ROM.

Not to be at all rude, but I'm really glad op has had this issue from testing other versions of Android, cause then at least I know I don't need to give up my great tablet mode ROM.
LOL
I think I've finally found a work around for this screen of death.
Using Exposed, download/install this module/extension:
Disable Proximity
http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.mrchandler.disableprox
It does exactly what it's name is and ever since then I've not once had to remove my GN battery to work again because the screen went completely dead.
NVM
Screen still goes dead.
Anyone find an actual fix to this?
isajoo,
I had pretty much the same problems with my Galaxy Nexus running CyanogenMod 11 M12.
It got better by doing the following :
Blowing dry air in the earpiece… though the proximity sensor is clearly beside it. Can't do any harm though, I guess.
Settings/Applications/All/menu/Reset applications preferences (or whatever that's called in english) : that seemed to do a lot of good to my phone ! However, it's a very unsatisfactory answer on a technical point of view, as I still don't know WHAT was precisely needed. It's a "magic wand" solution for which I can't give an explanation.
Not specifically related, but greatly helped my phone in the responsiveness area : Trimmer (fstrim) (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fifthelement.trimmer), an updated version of LagFix that you may already know
Hope that helped !
(I wanted to try http://www.androidlegend.com/how-to-perform-proximity-sensor-calibration-on-any-samsung-phone/ as well, but apparently, /sys/class/sensors/proximity_sensor/prox_cal does not exist on my phone…)
I've tried it with s voice both on and off. when I first turn it on after a reboot, it doesn't train the voice model, but it says it's on but doesn't work. It then turns itself off, and trying to turn it on results in the voice model training opening , then saying it completed successfully, then turning its self back off.
Help?
No one else has experienced this?

If you read the original post, it says I've tried with s voice and without
This really isn't unique to Lollipop, as it does this exact thing on mine which is still on kitkat. Sometimes I will hear the tone acknowledging the ok google, but will immediately hear another tone. Often the screen doesn't even turn on. Even more often it just never works, although it works pretty perfectly with the screen on.
It has nothing to do with disabling svoice, although it probably is related to Samsung's implementation of svoice. Once in a while, thE phone will fail to even acknowledge an ok google request, only to sometime later say, "if you're trying to say something I didn't get that." This seems to imply the microphone is locked in the listen position, but isn't working.
So I have a very weird issue and I'll try to explain the best I can;
For some reason, ever since the S10+ I've had issues with Samsung phones, I think its something to do with the proximity sensor that's now under the glass, I'll explain as I'm getting similar and more issues on my S20 Ultra.
So last year when I had an S10+ and when I was on a call, which I mainly use my left ear (I think my right ear is a few db less so I use my left) I would quite frequently seem to activate the menu (top right) and therefore end up pressing things with my ear, unbeknown to me, sometimes I'd add a 2nd person to the call or simply put the other person on hold! This happened a lot and I was close to sending it off for repair even though I used apps to test to ensure the proximity sensor was working correctly but in the end, I sold it and got an OnePlus 7 Pro, which I didn't have an issue with. During my time with the S10+ I noticed that even though I held the earpiece to my ear I could see the screen light up and that's where I think I'd end up pressing the screen accidentally as I've just explained.
Roll on to now where I'm facing similar issues but also I'm finding if I need both of my hands and therefore use my left shoulder to keep my phone against my ear the call disconnects as if I'm hanging up. Now it seems a straightforward resolution which is not to do that but I've never had this issue before and I've tested it out quite a bit when I do this the screen isn't on and my face is nowhere near the end button!! It's really driving me crazy at the moment and annoying my other half who's normally on the phone to me when this happens!!
Anyone got any suggestions or thoughts, does it happen to anyone else or am I just being stupid??
I haven't gone down the route of resetting the phone yet but I'm going to consider it.
