[Q] Red sensor light on front of GN2 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

I noticed last night while using my GN2 in the dark that the sensor on the right hand side of the phone, closest to the speaker above the samsung logo has a dim red glow. Does anybody know what this sensor is for?

Yeah I have noticed that mine does that too. I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's likely an ambient light sensor, but I don't know why it would glow. Also mine only does it when the phone is asleep once you turn on the screen it goes away.

It the light sensor. If you guys have auto brightness enabled its always glowing to detect the light and adjust the screen brightness accordingly

That makes sense. I was thinking it was because I had the hand over the sensor notification thingy turned on.

Interesting... I hate auto brightness and always turn it off. Why then would it be glowing when the screen is asleep?

Correction. The red glow people notice is an Infra Red emitter which is used in conjunction with the proximity sensor. The light sensor is the black hole to the right of the red glow people report.
You can test this by using at CMOS based camera (i.e. the camera in another smartphone, or any point-and-shoot digital)
Point the camera at the Galaxy Note's front while the screen is off and you'll see the light is bright white coming from the point where we see the faint red glow. It's most pronoun when tested in a dark room.
This is cause IR emitters are generally just LEDs which work at the far red side of the spectrum and near-visible red light is not a real concern in the applications they're used in. You see this alot on "night time security cameras" that have the arrays of IR LEDs to light up night shows with near 0 LUX cameras.
Also try testing your TV remote against your phone's camera, you'll see it strobe bright light the camera can see but you can't. Get an array of high power IR LEDs and you won't need a flash for you smart phones at night. Lots of fun stuff to do with these.

I was actually convinced it was the sensor used to to monitor your eyes for the smart stay feature.

the red light that you see is the night sensor, just wave your hand above the sensor in the dark, a blue notification light will light up and then the top screen will glow showing you the time, missed calls , message and battery percentage. it's awesome...

One word. Skynet.

Bunch of dummies! Jk lol.. That is the motion sensor and it turns on when the screen is off because you have quick glance from the motion settings enabled. Turn off screen glance and no more red light when screen is off. Ps screen glance is when your phone is sleep and the swipe of your hand over the red sensor turns on the screen to give you a preview. It also comes on when you're on a call. You guys are welcome for the answer

i thought it was just a charging notification because it goes away when hitting power on stock
and when fully charged its a bright green so i think its fine
but you might can get led flow to maybe change that particular light?

They are talking about something completely different, than the charge indicator.

that red glow is the PROXIMITY sensor
My OG Evo had the red light
so did my Evo 3D
and my galaxy SII
it technically isn't even a motion sensor. It just detects when your face is up to the phone (to turn screen off during calls) or when you touch it with the quick glance thing turned on (to turn the screen on)
It doesn't actually detect motion, but instead detects the distance of an object to the sensor

I don't have quick glance on, or any of those motion things, but my proximity sensor seems to get stuck on (and non reactive) every now and then. A reboot to the phone fixes it usually. Anyone else randomly getting it stuck on? I know it doesn't waste much battery at all, but I do know that it confuses apps that use sensor.proximity attributes, so a fix would be nice. I'm complete stock.

This. is. the. RIGHT. answer.

Screen does not come back on when moving it away from your face
The issue I have is that when I make or receive a call once the screen goes off after putting it up to your face it will not come back on even after hitting power or any other keys. It acts like its still up against your face. I flashed back to my recovery and tried several roms but still the same issue. There are no special features on like quick glance. Has anyone else had this issue?

Change color of 'Charged' LED.

Like it says in the title. I want to change the green light to blue, when the phone is charged. Thought it would make a nice addition to the theme.
I don't think it possible because our hero has only got "two collered led" - grenn and orange.

There is a blue LED, if you hold trackball & power when booting up you get blue as it is in JTAG debug mode!
EDIT: Sorry, I was thinking G1! Would be nice though.

Flux for android? [idea]

I use an app called flux on my computers which changes the screen to be a warmer color at night, to match indoor lighting (so that it is easier on your eyes at night). Is there an app like this for android yet? Kernels like franco let you change the lcd color properties, so I guess there just needs to be an app that does this on a timer. Where would I start for making an app like this?
I have extensive experience with languages like C, but IIRC android apps aren't made (entirely) of c.

I've had mixed results with it. Think it's one of those you have to spend some time with the settings to get it right.
I think everyone so far has missed the point. Most apps currently available only offer the ability to change the brightness of the screen, but not the color temperature. The color temperature so far is only modifiable via the color control apps currently being used with custom kernels, and it doesn't respond to the light sensor on the phone.
The OP is asking for brightness and color control to be linked together so changes in the light sensor will trigger warmer colors at night and cooler colors during the day.

I think you missed the point, because Lux Auto Brightness does exactly that!
Color Temperature and Automatic Brightness to Sub-Zero levels using the phone's Light Sensor!!!
I've dreamed so many nights about this kind of app!!!

Do you have to get the pay for version to have the change in tint? I don't see it in the free version.
I had been using this function in JuiceDefender but it seems to be acting weird with my ROM lately, making the screen way too dark sometimes.

I'm not wrong, I'm disappointed. The paid version does not alter color temp, it just overlays this ugly orange transparency, which tints black pixels as well as light ones, it does not transition well , doesn't follow the astronomical schedule, does not by any means approximate f.lux

I would love to see an app like F.lux on android. F.lux has saved my poor eyes at night on my main PCs. The chainfire3d app gets the effects right, but sadly it doesn't work on 4.2. There must be someone out there working on something like this...

The little red light to the right of the earpiece is the proximity sensor. Its emitting infrared to be able to see proximity. You aren't supposed to really be able to see it, but its normal to see dim red in there when the sensor is active. My Galaxy S II did the same thing.
You can use light flow in the play store to change the color based on type of notification.
The ambient light sensor also affects the notification LED - its dimmer in dark rooms vs bright rooms.

The teardown at https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Google+Pixel+C+Teardown/62277 says at Step 4 "The front-facing camera assembly contains a 2 MP selfie cam, ambient light sensor, and what looks like a camera indicator LED." Full size photo at https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/NgYV6anKZIYNCi3p - if you get a blank screen look at your browser scroll bars, you may be viewing the top LH corner.
I've never seen the LED lit. The Nexus 9 has a notification LED that does nothing (possibly) and the thread ran to 90+ posts (including x-ray photos) http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-9/general/led-nexus-9-t2929379

Still very mysterious

Finger print LED as Notification LED

Hi guys
I was thinking if it is possible to use finger print scanner LED as a notification LED? I know it may not be currently possible but just floating the idea for the devs who make things possible all the time
I know the LED is huge to be used as notification LED but some people would love to have an LED instead of a ringtone or vibration alerts, thanks in advance for any help in this regard
I don't know if this is possible but this is a fantastic idea.
If this is actually possible it would be awesome!
Great idea, but is there really a separate LED ? I had always assumed that the FP uses the green lighting from the display itself....

Yes I thought it was like that.
I think it doesn't matter if there's a separate LED to light up the display or part of the screen itself is used as a notification LED, but I think all possibilities are there, to choose the color, random colors each time or per app, position on the screen etc...
I don't really see the point in using those specific pixels as a notification LED when any other pixels on the display work just as well. And if anything, you'd want to avoid lighting up the fingerprint pixels too much since they are being used more at high brightness and therefore more susceptible to burn-in.

Amy work on this?
I disabled fps on my 6t because of the annoyingly high brightness of this green circle when your finger is close!
I don't think there is a led, I saw a video where they open the 6t and access the sensor module, it's just a camera sensor under the screen, the amoled brightness is boosted in this particular part of the screen, that's all.
Thanks God they didn't use a laser light, half the people would go (really) blind.
You can use an app like noled to simulate a led anywhere on your screen.
