DrewGaren's JellyBean747 M7 - A couple thoughts - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Sadly, I do not have enough posts to my name to reply to the thread in the Development forum, so I thought I'd post this here. I'm using Drew's JB747 M7, and it's very close to perfect for my needs. I had a couple issues that I ran into, and I've fixed them, so I wanted to share.
1) I ran into the issue with the Call Log prepending + to all incoming calls. This, of course, makes it impossible to return a call by tapping it in the Log. The TMO RIL files mentioned in post #3951 in that thread did, in fact, fix the issue for me.
2) Even after updating the RIL files, I found that I could not use Google Voice for my voicemail. I know that it's not possible to use Voice's built-in setup wizard to configure itself as the VM service in TW ROMs, and I know that I cannot get VMs to display in Call Log with TW either, but the issue I had was that my forwarding did not work. If I rejected a call, it went to dead air. It did not hang up, and it did not go to my GV greeting. After some tinkering, I found that resetting my forwarding numbers to the default (using the MMI ##004# in Dialer) did work with call rejections (sending to my AT&T VM, of course). After doing this, I tried the *004*[GV NUMBER]# MMI, and tested the call reject again. This time it forwarded to GV as expected. I know this is mentioned as a possible fix in other threads, but I wanted to state that it worked for me, so it's worth a try if you already have GV as your VM service on whatever ROM you're flashing from.
3) SOD - after freezing some Samsung bloatware, I rebooted. I'm using the stock kernel DG includes in the ROM. A couple hours later, I experienced my first SOD. The soft buttons were illuminated, and the only thing I could do to fix was pull the battery. This was with the suggested settings in No-Frills from the M7QuickFix set, and supposed to apply on Reboot. Looking at the CPU speed stats in No-Frills after the SOD, I noticed a whole lot of time spent at 384MHz, despite 486MHz being set as my minimum. It seems like perhaps No-Frills settings are not, in fact, re-applying after reboot. I'm still tinkering with No-Frills to see if I can replicate.
I may flash Ktoonsez's kernel so I can get KTweaker instead, but wanted to at least mention that it looks like double-checking CPU speeds after a reboot might be a good idea.
Hope this helps someone out there. And a big THANKS to Drew for his great ROM. Donation heading your way shortly, and I can't wait to see 1.0. :good:

Thanks!
Just flashed ktoonsez's 10/31 kernel, which was posted moments after I'd finished flashing 10/28 . I ran KT's kernels on all of the AOKP and CM JB ROMs I've run, plus a handful of TW ICS ROMs. Love KT's work, but wanted to try out the stock kernel in JB747. I was getting fantastic battery life with the stock kernel, so I'm hopeful KT's gives me some good life, too.

Flash grafixxnyc port and u won't have any issues.
As for your Google Voice issues i never had issues. It would say it didn't work when setting up but always did.
I was a fan of Drew's ROMs but the high Android b system drain was b worrying me. After 6 builds it was always high.
Been running this port and couldn't be happier. Try it you won't be sorry.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually have tried grafixxnyc's Stock Sprint port and prefer DG's ROM. Too much Sprint stuff in grafixxnyc's port.
I have not, however, tried BlackJelly if that's the one you mean. Was considering trying it this weekend, though I'm hoping Drew will have JB747 1.0 out by then.
At this point, JB747 M7 with KT's kernel is working quite well for me, after the RIL fix at least. Going to keep this as my go-to nandroid for a while I think. :good:

Thanks for the tips. Im currently using m4.1 sprint leak as my daily driver. Works great, I get over 30hrs of life with light use. About 18-20 w mod use.

Yeah, I was getting great battery life with DG's stock kernel. KT's kernel eliminates the SOD for me (so far...it's only been 36 hours), but the battery life is slightly inferior. Using ktoonservative and SIO. Stock voltages, so I may need to play with that.
Which specific ROM are you using? Got a link?

Anybody Returned to Stock after trying different mods and Kernels? Tell us about it.

Hi,
I have played with my Gnex for the Past 4 months (Released Dec 8th in Canada). I have installed many mods, kernels, ROMS (Currently on AOKP MS3 and Francko Kernel MS1). I love the utilities provided by these custom apps, but I keep having stability problems from time to time and its getting a little bit disapoint.
* My Juice Def apps gets killed and settings are reset.
* I only see 50% of the pic when people call me.
* Volume is at max, but cant hear my music because of ambiant noise (to tell yuo hoe low the volume becomes)
* I Dont know how to use he Undervolting and Overvolting of the CPUS, and I dont realy care (Too technical for me)
* Whatever ROM is used, it still sucks my battery. Juice Defender is very good at doubling my battery life.
These are some reasons that I might bo back to STOCK KERNEL and ICS.
For those of you who returned to STOCK, Did you miss all the tweaks ROMS and Kernel gives you? Do you notice a different in speed?
Thanks.
Sounds like you're overall not happy with your experience.
If all of these cool tweaks are making it so you can't regularly use the phone like you like it, just return to stock. Its not worth sacrificing your enjoyment of the phone just to get some cool tweaks.
Problem is.. I dont really remember how its to run a stock phone. :S

Then do it! No one's stopping you. There is no shame in returning to stock lol. Its okay.
I want back to stock for a day and changed my mind.... main reason that I don't like the stock is lack of toggles and overall smoothness. Oooo and you have no idea how often I use search icon on navbar . Also this is my main way of communicating with people. Voice actions are brill testing and calling is very easy with this. Someone will say that I can do that from search bar .... yes but 9 out of 10 times I'll miss tapping the icon ....

Did I return to stock? Well, after successfully compiling my first ROM (AOSP 4.0.3) I found out that my backups were deleted so I had to reflash some stock images from Google. I'm having enough fun playing with the phone on my own...I can be patient to see what improvements other ROMs come up with.

1. I use juice defender too and I NEVER saw it getting killed. The settings do reset everytime you flash something even if you don't wipe cache but that's the developer's problem no the roms/kernels. The solution is simple : just backup your settings from JD's status tab and restore it after you flash zips in recovery.
2. Well known issue with m3. there was a fix zip floating around but you should just update. m3 is not anymore stable than the newer aokp builds. b26/27 are very stable but just wait a few days and m4 will be out for sure.
3. I'm not sure what you mean by that. Are you saying you can't hear the music at 100% volume? Does it go away with stock kernel? then it might be franco's volume hack. Try leankernel 2.4 if you want something lean, fast, with GREAT battery life and without all the extra bells and whistles. you need to go to rootzwiki.com to dl leankernel.
4. You don't need to undervolt with gnexus and even if you do, it's completely pointless. It causes instability and the battery savings are negligible.
5. Wipe data and cache and flash leankernel 2.4 and aokp b26 (or m4 when it comes out). You'll lose all your settings but I think this combination will keep you happy for along time.
6. I used JD Ultimate for a long time and after a lot of testing on leankernel 2.4, I find it completely redundant.
I'm back to stock (stock launcher too).
It's because I've never had any real problem with stock in the first place. No battery drain, no dropped calls, no sluggish interface and everything works. Then the most important thing is I LOVE the simplicity feel that stock offers so I've decided to go back to stock.
Nothing against custom ROMs.
This is why after you root its always good to Nandroid your stock rom.
The only thing i like about stock is that i know its not going to fail me and i know i dont have to always mess around with tweaks and other things.. it just does what it was meant to do..
Custom roms seems to always have problems with different kernels or maybe the ROM is just in beta.. or a tweak is causing something else to break..
But we also have some good custom roms base off of stock with nothing too much added.. like Android Revolatuion.. No diss towards other roms tho.. just people dont want to always have to change or fix something

It all comes down to personal choices really.
To me i tried AOKP rom with Franco kernel and it really rocked. But then i went back to stock since 4.0.2 with XXKK6 gives me good battery life and its rock stable.. no issues. i do have to give up a lot of customizations but i can live with it. no problem.
The reason i don't want to install custom roms yet is that i would go crazy with flashing roms and it would be addicting so right now i just want to stay away..i would get bored after trying all new roms.. so right now STOCK.. just want to savour the beautiful Galaxy Nexus as is.
I went back to stock on Sunday. I was checking to see if wallet would work on stock but it didn't. When it booted up stock the first time I was like:
http://troll.me/images/snape-dafuq/dafuq-is-this-****.jpg
When I got my phone it was stock for about 5 minutes. AOKP FTW!
Confused. You can run ROMs with the stock kernel. IMHO, stock kernel> any custom kernel. My experience, custom kernels create different problems.
Kernel enthusiasts tend to be a little... too enthusiastic. They tend to ignore the problems and measurebate about supposed battery life or performance.
My best combination is AOKP ROM for the features and stock kernel with a couple performance tweaks in the developer settings.
Now I just go about using my phone to enhance my life rather than the other way round.
YMMV, and it is your life, of course.

I agree 100%.
I never had any issue with AOKP. But I use stock kernel. Custom kernels are for those who can live with a phone not working 100 % and alarm clock fail to ring in the morning. If you want the best of the best for the Gnex, flash AOKP, and nothing else. And don't mess with performance settings.
And btw. The only ROM that ever randomly rebooted on me, was stock ROM. How is that for a laugh?
Stop using Juice Defender. It sucks or it has some serious bugs on Nexus I don't know. Stock everything I had juice defender on and strange things were happening. Touching screen would do nothing, apps would close on their own. When I took it off everything was fine again. Juice defender was recommended to me by someone else. So oh well, seems he was luckier than me running it. Fast forward a week, I got interested in ROM's, now running AOKP with Fugumod kernel and thought hmm maybe give juice defender another shot. Within 1 day I removed it. AGAIN, apps crashing, touches not being recognized, slowness switching screens. I say Juice defender stinks or has lots of bugs. My battery life is just fine with AOKP and Fugumod. Right now my Nexus is perfection. I can quickly get in and out of apps and there is no slowness or anything. I can't see myself ever going back to stock.
I'm running stock 4.0.4 with no issues.

I'm debating going back to stock.
Came from 4.0.2 stock to AOKP 1-30 milestone + franco.
The new ROM is nice and all, but like every 15-30m I get randomly disconnected from the network and takes 15s to reconnect. It's semi-tolerable but I hate things like this.
why was music app missing from AOKP rom Milestone 3? who do you get it back?

Kernel Question

Hello all,
I recently purchased an S3 and just trying to figure everything out for it (as I am coming from the nexus where everything is much simpler) The only real question I have for everyone is, What kernel is the best so far? Something that is optimized for battery life and speed.
If anyone is from the Nexus development you would know about Franco's kernel which has served me well for a long time, So what I'm looking for is something that is like the Franco Kernel, and has customization settings.
Any insight would be great
Cheers.
When running an AOSP JB ROM (like CM10 or AOKP), I'd suggest ktoonsez's KT747 kernel. It supports overclocking to 2.1 GHz, undervolting, comes with numerous tweakable governors and io schedulers, and it comes with its own adjustment app called KTweaker which is very handy. Just don't use SetCPU or Voltage Control or any other such app with that kernel as they could cause conflicts with KTweaker.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756776
The current KT747 for Sammy ROMS seems to be having issues with many phones though, so for Sammy ROMS I'd say your safest bet is faux123's kernel. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1785466
Much appreciated. I was seeing ktoonsez's KT747 kernel, and figured this was the "main" kernel for the s3 but I just had to know for sure. What you describe with it is exactly what I'm looking for in a kernel...full control of it. Thanks again
Also on KT747 ktoon created his on governor called ktoonservative. It's based off conservative but it's kicking some serious butt with my device :good:. I'm also severely under-volted but that shouldn't really change much as far as battery life.

I tried the kernel (both actually) and had no luck with either, one caused everything to fail ie: wifi, data, launcher, touch screen was unresponsive. And after flashing in the other one that says it is 100% stable on all devices, I was left with a phone that wouldnt turn on, and when it did start up, the screen was unresponsive. I tried clearing caches, fixing permissions, but nothing worked at all.
So I went back to stock kernel. Hopefully some of these issues can be resolved some day.

no offense meant, but if you are asking this question I would advise holding off on flashing any kernels and get more comfortable with just flashing roms first -- Roms are more pre-packaged and you can build your comfort level by trying out a series of roms prior to messing with the kernel which is a more powerful and inherently more influential element to your phone's operation
Appreciate the input I have flashed many roms but i allways go back to stock, i flashed a kernal earlier but i went back to stock kernal because im scared of burning my processor, not quite sure how safe undervolting and overclocking is, and ya im a noob just got my first android phone about 2 months ago and just rooted it last month.

I haven't tried faux kernel but ktoonzes will be OK left stock processor wise, it won't burn out your processor. Plus you will benefit from his built in tweaks. As far as over clocking/ undervoting ( oc/uv) if you go too far your phone will either freeze up or reboot, so don't use any "set at boot" options until you know your phone will handle it. I use ktoonzes kernel with no oc just the lower frequencies and a mild under volt for battery savings with no ill effects.
thanks for seeing the comment in the way it was intended! seems you have going about things the right way: everyone's phone will accept OC differently, some operate fine at higher levels, others not -- Faux does not post "recommended" levels for this reason, asks that you make adjustments in small increments and use your phone to see how it handles the changes. It is very much a trial and error. I had an older S1 that was wonderfully resilient and would take any setting and still function -- I lost it long before it had a chance to get damaged, My own sense is the phone itself is robust and hard to actually kill -- my earlier caution was more to prevent you jumping in the deep end too soon.
I have tried both Faux and the KT747 kernels, presently running just stock which is in itself a pretty decent kernel.

I tried Ktoonz and it made my playstore act weird and not connect and error out and such.
So I reversed back to my backup image with the rom's initial kernel that was installed with it.
I only find Kernel's being useful for OC or Dual Booting if you need/want the fun with that.
Otherwise find an amazing rom like Serenity or WanamLite or something if you want more customizability
OR a stock rom whichever one suites you better.

Perhaps your voltages and/or settings were too much for your phone to handle. When it gets out of hands, apps will FC a lot and phone will usually freeze or reboot. If you didn't edit the settings, I don't think the kernel left at default settings would affect the Playstore's connection.

CM10 M2 Lag after initial reboot, kernel issue?

Ok so to make a story short:
I installed CM10 M2 wednesday, everything went AWESOME. Smooth, responsive, fast! Pure JB awesomeness. Then, satuday i decided to flash Faux123 kernel to have additional governors and from that point, everything has been terrible. The phone has been extremely laggy, it randomly rebooted and sometimes when i turn off screen, it doesnt want to turn back on and i have to battery pull.
Since that, i have formated the phone at least 5 times, i tried just a factory reset, complete wipe through CWM, reflashing rom, but nothing worked. What really weirh though is when i reflash the rom, and reinstall all my apps and put everything back, until i reboot the phone once, the phone is smooth and stable. But as soon as i reboot the phone, i'm done. It becomes laggy again, reboots and has sleep of death.
I'm really perplex as to what can cause this. I honestly am just about to ODIN this phone back to stock and just wait for official JB...thats unless somebody here has a quickfix?
I'm assuming when we reflash rom it also reflashes kernel, maybe reflahing just the kernel will solve this? anybody got a link? or a kernel to suggest?
EDIT: Now i can reproduce the problem. Everytime i turn off screen and i turn it back on shortly after, it reboots
Try ktoonsez kernel. He seems to be putting more updates than faux. Faux hasn't updated since August and ktoonsez updated 5 days ago.

Hi there,
Yes, I have flashed on my T889V a few months back, since I wanted a kernel that would allow me to OC a bit, use fast charge for USB since I don't have a wall plug always available to me etc. Over the past few months it has worked flawlessly, I haven't had any issues whatsoever. I find my phone runs much smoother that it did before, it charges way quicker and given I haven't OC'ed it to the max allowed, it never randomly reboots or anything. Given I have added a bunch of mod apps such as viper4android for sounds and others that use a lot of ressources, it works perfectly for me, I never have any lags. I don't know if there is anything specific u would like me to tell u about, if so please let me know and I will.
Cheers

Thanks for all the info. I do have a few more questions.
How is the battery life? The biggest issue I found with custom roms and stock kernel was that battery life was terrible. It would drop a percentage roughly every minute and a half the screen was on.
Which Rom are you using this kernel with?
Which recovery did you end up using? CWM, TWRP or Phillz?
Also, did you root the phone with CF-Autoroot or SuperUser?
I had issues with whatsapp when I rooted my phone (I could not download pictures, but could send them). Went back to stock as I use whatsapp a lot.
My pleasure! As for my set up, it's stock Touchwiz 4.4.2 running Agni kernel. The app it comes with allows for several customizations, both battery friendly and performance friendly, but what I use if the above stock overclocking and a little. The governor and I/O scheduler are part of settings that the creator of Agni has, which works very well for me. As for battery, it lasts pretty much all day.. I use the phone for about 3 to 4 hours of voice, read a lot with it and text/youtube/listening to podcasts/casting video etc, and it lasts all day long. I charge my phone nightly, and goes from the morning at 100% to night time (around 9pm) at about 35% - 40%. I use philz, and rooted the phone with philz after flashing the recovery through Odin; I've never used CF auto root. After rooting the phone, I installed superSU and my phone runs very very smoothly. I used (in the past) Omni on this phone, and it used to work perfectly.. I had issues with netflix and the gallery, so I stuck to it for a few months but got tired of AOSP and went back to Touchwiz.. I personally prefer it.
Hope it helps, cheers!

Thanks for that. Now I know the process I can try to get better results with a custom kernel.
Lastly, are you running your T889V on Videotron? If so, have you updated your phone with the new stock firmware (T889VVLUDNH2) from Samsung? The T889VVLUDNH2 appears to be a modem only update for T889V, but I can't be sure as I have not found any official change log by Samsung.
In any case, I was wondering if the update enabled any LTE bands (specifically LTE Band 4 - the AWS LTE Band) on the T889V. The update seems to coincide with the LTE network that Videotron launched last month (Sept 2014).
Are you getting LTE speeds on your T889V?

Hello Everyone,
This is only to share what I found after weeks of searching (after posting a question a kind gentleman referred me to it) that works with both the Canadian variant of the t0lte T889V and the T-Mobile version itself (t0lte: haven't tried it since I don't own the phone however it's stated in the posts that it works).
After trying it for a few weeks now it's very smooth, has a control environment that modifies OC, UV, GPU OC, etc with one click depending on profiles, etc.
Read on here ----------> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2602053
All credits due to psndna88 for creating the kernel and flash at your own risk (as in, if you flash the kernel and anything happens psndna88 and myself are not responsible.)
Make sure to chose the correct version depending on your phone.
Cheers everyone and hope this helps!

I have tried CM11 and Omni 4.4.4 roms and it appears that the phone loses:
1) its model number (no big deal),
2) carrier id just shows US (would be useful to have real operator for roaming),
3) and lastly, does not show the type of data network it is connected to. Just shows bars, no E, 3G etc. Also, it show LTE in network options, but not WCDMA/GSM, since the phone does not have LTE. I would like too see the network I am connected to.
Any help would be much appreciated.

The only think I can think of is that since you're no longer running TouchWIz but AOSP, the Kernel might have compatibility issues. From what I read before when I was using this phone as my daily driver, this kernel was meant for TW roms, but since CM and Omni are AOSP, I figure some things might not be compatible. If I'm not mistaken, the creator of the kernel has a version called pure AOSP rather than this version, which is pure stock.
Hope it helps!

Thanks. Is there a ROM/Kernel combination you would recommend as a daily driver for the T889v.
I would want the following:
1) Decent battery life compared to stock. On stock I lose about 2.5% an hour by just being on standby. And with use I lose about 1% every 2 mins of screen time (for example when reading news in chrome browser at lowest brightness.)
2) Is responsive. The stock rom is starting to become really laggy (despite me having uninstalled a lot of apps). I know a lot of the budget phones like the Moto G2, which have less ram be much more responsive.
3) It would be nice if it shows the type of data network I am connected to HSPA+, 3G, Edge etc
4) Lastly, would be nice if it actually displays the carrier I am connected to, instead of displaying US.
Also, would points 3 and 4 be resolved if I removed boot.img from the ROM package? I have read that somewhere, but was not an authoritative source and don't want to brick the phone. It is still my daily driver, and would like to avoid bricking it.
Well, as for past experiences, what I used to run on the phone when I was on AOSP was Omni.. I really liked the battery life, it run for about two days with regular browsing, email checking, phone using, texting, youtube video playing, etc. If you decide to flash Omni, what I would suggest would be to run the kernel that comes with it. Normally, the Rom will come with it's own kernel manager (I believe they either use PAC kernel, Linaro or a CM based kernel), but it will work fine. The only thing that drove me off of Omni was that there was an issue with Netflix, but there's a patch running around in the forums and also in the Xposed framework. As per the ROM showing either 4G or LTE of HDPA+, at the time we didn't have in LTE with the phone, but I could see HSPA+ just fine.
If I can recommend something, is to clean install whichever ROM u decide to flash, and use the minimal GAPPS. Also, when you restore your apps (if you use something like TiBu) never restore system apps, just user apps.
Let me know what you end up doing and how it works for you!
