[Q] How to update from Gingervillan to Sandvold - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am new to flashing and it is a long time ago when I flashed Gingervillan.
Current state of my phone is: S-on, hboot is 0.093.0001 and I have root. I do not know which version of recovery is installed.
What I did up to now to prepare the Sandvold flash is backing up with nandroid. My first question is: Can I go back with this nandroid back to my Gingervillan system regardless what Iam doing with partitioning, hboot or flashing another recovery?
The second question is: I read, that the sandvold image can cope with all hboot versions. Nevertheless I would like to install CM7r2 since it is much smaller. So I have to S-off first. Am I right?
Third question is: Which kind of recovery do I need to flash the sandvold ROM? I have tried to flash Sandvolds ROM with the recovery I have currently installed but it did not work.
Fourth question: Do I need to partition my SDcard newly to benefit from Apps2SD? I now have very rare space and had to move my Dalvik cache to SD.
Thanks for your help.

A nandroid won't restore hboot, recovery, and won't undo your sd-partition. It just restores boot, system, cache, data, sd-ext.
S-off with revolutionary, then install 4ext recovery and partition your sd-card.

Flash Hboot, cant boot into rom

I flashed my hboot from bravo_alphaspl-cm7.img to bravo_alphaspl-oxygen.img. I used the "Android Flasher utility" after preforming a nandroid backup. I believe I flashed it properly, since I can get into my hboot and it says alpharev oxygen at the top in pink. That being said i cannot boot into either cm7 or oxygen rom. I think i need to reflash alpharev? how would I do that without booting into rom?
[resolved] Guess i didn't wipe my data....
I think the /system partition of the oxygen hboot is to small for the cm7 rom. Usually you should flash hboot on this way:
1.) Make nandroid backup
2.) Flash hboot
3.) Boot into recovery, wipe everything and then restore nandroid-backup

mainly when i receive calls..??
Any suggestions or ideas I can try people???
Thanks for any help offered!!!!
1. give us more detail
2. boot into recovery, go to:
\mounts & storage
>format boot
>format system
>format data
>format cache
>format sd-ext
3. Reflash your ROM.
4. Does not work? Defenestrate your phone.
Thanks for reply, yes i always do a clean fresh install ,so i format SD and wipe Dalvik etc,im now thinking it could possibly be the radio as its not one of the latest....
But because im S-OFF i cant flash it in the normal way,If i flash back from Cm7r2 partition to the standard HBoot one, will i be able to flash the radio ZIP via Recovery again??
Many thanks..

or you could just flash the .img via fastboot.. it's much safer, there links to radios on my guide.. but it's unlikely it'd be the radio.. could give it a try though I suppose..

FIXED [Q] Stucked on boot after HBOOT change

Hi,
I am not new at flashing and modding but got stucked and need some expert help
Here is what I have done:
1. had hboot cm7r2 and Runnymede AIO ROM - Working great but decided to sell Desire
2. Changed HBOOT to Alfarev Sense, partitioned to ext3
3. Installed Leedroid 3.0.8. Sense ROM
4. Rebooted - after that can not go further than boot screen
I repeated procedure few time but still on boot screen
Any ideas ?!
Why don't you try the STOCK partition table because it has a bigger system partition size
Probably the best choice for you would be to restore stock HTC rom.
Just sayin...

did you format all partitions? aligned ext3?
Sounds like you did not wipe cache after changing Hboot and did not wipe anything when changing Rom. If you did that, the Leedroid Rom does not fit into Sense Hboot, so you have to change to Stock Hboot:
Wipe everything, flash hboot (do not forget to reboot bootloader and wipe cache afterwards) and then flash ROM again.

Encountering problems after flashing partition table

Hi there, thanks a lot for paying attention to this thread
I have just recently pushed in a partition table 'Bravo CM7 r2' using fastboot and adb.
What i have done so far:
I wiped the cache and wiped data/factory reset after the partition table was done. Then i restored the backup i did before i updated the partition tables.
However, after booting up normally with no problems, the second i unlocked my device, things started to force close (keyboard, android.process and other things)
Desperate, i went back to recovery and i reflashed my ROM (cm7.1), then i wiped the cache and wiped data/factory reset and the same thing happened, i unlocked my device and everything just starts to force close again (refer to previous paragraph for force closed items)
I have no idea how to get this working, it appears it is not as easy as the tutorial says.
I need your assistance, thanks a lot guys!
What exactly did you do when you "unlocked your device"?

Hi MatDrOiD, thanks for the prompt reply.
What do you mean by "What exactly did you do when you "unlocked your device"?
Btw, i forgotten to include some information about the device im using. Sorry about that.
Phone Model: HTC Desire (GSM)
ROM: CM7.1
S-OFF
Hi, can't anyone help a noob out?
Can't no one help me? Or am i required to start a new thread?
As far as I can tell, you're doing it wrong. Wipes are to be done before, not after the flash.
fastboot flash hboot cm7r2.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot erase cache
Boot to recovery now.
mounts&storage
format system, data, sd-ext and cache (optional as you already wiped it but do so for the piece mind) and do so manually! Not just full wipe.
Now flash your new rom. In case you flashed something else, only one thing is supposed to be flashed per session unless said otherwise in the installation instructions!
If crashes continue, download the rom again.

Hi, thanks for the reply! Am i supposed to restore my backup after im done flashing my ROM?
UPDATE: I did a restore and the situation looks a lot brighter, less force crashes. The only thing that FCs now is thememanager. Is there anything else i can do? Or should i raise a white flag and restart from scratch?
Why would you flash a new ROM if you can restore your nandroid backup of the previous rom?
But make sure your the /system-partition of the ROM you backed up is smaller than the one of your new hboot.
Hi, let me get a clearer picture of what im supposed to do
1) Push in the img for the partition using fastboot
2) Wipe system, cache, data, sd-ext
3) Restore backup (no need to flash new ROM here?)
In case this helps, i flashed ceberus and gapps for my backup. Would that affect the system partition?
First step: Make nandroid backup!!!
No, there isn't any need to flash rom.
Yes, it will effect it.
Haha! Nandroid Backup has already been made. But it is useless now because i flashed in ceberus isn't it? So the only thing i can do now is to make a backup of all my apps through Titanium backup and start anew?
Also, if i wanted ceberus to be inside, i would have to make a custom partition right?
Excuse me, but what is ceberus??

As MatDrOiD said earlier, make sure the ROM you're restoring is made for the CM7R2 partition table. The stock partition table has a 250 MB /system partition while CM7R2 has an 145 MB one. If you're trying to fit your 250 MB /system ROM into an 145 MB /system... there's your problem. So, what ROM were you using before flashing CM7R2?

[Q] Can't install ICS 4.0.4 BCM RC3.4U1

I'm having some trouble installing ICS 4.0.4 BCM RC3.4U1 on my HTC Desire GSM.
I flashed my HBOOT to Data++, I wiped all of the data and cache partitions and even reformated my SD card, but I can't get it to install. I gets to "Inspecting Partitions Sizes" and never proceeds. Any help?
Did you format the other partitions e.g. boot, system - after you flashed the data ++ hboot ?

What did you use to partition sd card? clockworkmod recovery is not a good choice. You should try it with gparted or 4ext recovery.
Full wipe then flash Hboot again.. Happened once for me.. try changing hboot to another one then flash Data++ back.. and use 4ext..
Sorry to dredge this thread up. Got it solved. Had to flash /boot from recovery.
So, thread closed. Tx.
