Does anyone know whether the video multitasking the Note 2 can do on screen (viewing video while still being able to do other tasks) is capable when connected to HDMI and your TV? Meaning, can I start a movie or video on the Note 2 and have it play on my TV, while still using the phone for texts, IMs, browsing etc without the video stopping?

I haven't tested it with the HDMI port but I have tried streaming to TV with DLNA wirelessly. While the video was streaming, as soon as I pressed the home button the stream was disconnected. Sounds like it might work with the MHL cable only if you use the pop-up video option since it just mirrors from the phone.

Actually I have a LG 7600 and I am able to stream recorded videos (or movies I have uploaded from my pc) to my TV using the default video app and pictures using gallery through wifi direct and the wireless display feature on the LG. It is limited to those 2 apps as far as I know though. Is that similar to what you wanted to do?

I am streaming wirelessly. I connect the 2 via wifi direct then on my phone I open a video in the stock video player once it starts playing there is an icon at the top left to connect to wireless display and I click it and it automatically displays on my TV but is being played on my phone. I am not using a video player on my tv at all.
I know you can't do it with Netflix this way or Crackle but if you rent/buy a movie from the play store you can stream it wirelessly to you tv.

I am actually using Windows media center as my DVR and in conjunction with Remote Potato I can stream any movies or recordings (broadcast flag permitting) across local network or internet and play them through the stock video player which I am then able to stream to a TV that has wireless display capabilities. So I typically do not keep movies on my SD card.
Just for the record you can use Remote Potato with out using media center and be able to stream whatever content you have on your PC to your phone. Works very well.
you can stream anything you want even slingplayer using the allshare cast dongle! its a really nice piece of tech to own!
If you have a PS3 I posted a tutorial on how to stream from your phone.

You can wireless mirror your phones displays to your TV using the All-Share Cast Hub. It supports 1080p video output too.

Hey guys. I am wondering what is the purpose of the Allshare cast dongle? Would I need it still if I have a samsung smart tv (UN55ES8000 series)?
I can use my note 2 as a remote control via the app Allshare control. I can view my gallery images into the tv via Allshare Play. However, if I go to settings -> More settings -> Allshare Cast, it tells me that there are no devices nearby.... Isn't allshare built into the tv? Or is allshare cast something totally different?

AllShare Cast Dongle is to wirelessly mirror your phone screen to TV like Airplay, iPad/iphone to Apple TV.
Allshare Cast "mirroring" won't work with Smart TVs without the dongle. and if you want to mirror you can buy the MHL adapter or if you want to mirror wirelessly then you need the Allshare Cast Dongle which costs $99.

i didn't buy the Allshare cast Dongle coz i think $99 is expensive for a device that only Mirror wirelessly and nothing else so i don't know if it lags when watching HD videos but if you only want to play HD movie you can do that using DLNA since you have Samsung Smart TV. I have a Sony Smart Tv and watching HD movie wirelessly using DLNA works perfectly without any Lag.
I bought the allshare cast dongle and it's awesome. It's easy to stop and use plus no lag. I was bored out of my mind at my in laws but this dongle saved the day. I connected it to their tv, watched a few movies I had downloaded and voila, no longer bored plus I saved the day w some entertainment.

Bangsters, try playing a movie and allshare it from your phone. I have a 6050 series dumb tv with a smart sammy bd player. I can download 720p tv shows on my phone and allshare them to the bd player from the stock video app. It looks just like I had my laptop hooked to my receiver with hdmi and stays in sync. I was VERY surprised.

thanks for the advice guys. Unfortunately, what I wanted to accomplish is impossibe with the Allshare Play app. What I wanted to do was get rid of my appletv and start collecting all my digital movies via google play. However, movies rented or purchased via google play cannot be streamed using allshare play. It cannot even be played with any other player except the google movie & tv player (the one with the red icon).
So I guess the only way to do it now is really though allshare cast dongle if I wana do it wirelessly.
Bummer, now I think I bought a useless samsung smart tv and just burned huge hole in my pocket could have saved a lot by buying a basic led tv and an allshare cast dongle.

Just make sure both devices are connected to the home network, open up your video player to play the movie, and in the upper left corner of the screen is a little icon like a monitor. I'll have a number in it corresponding to how many dlna devices it is seeing. Click that icon and select your bd player. I'll say processing on your tv for a couple seconds and start playing!

Use any DLNA software on the galaxy note 2 and you will be able to view the device on your samsung Smart Tv or Smart Bd player. Browse the files on the TV and select to play......
I spent my entire day to figure out the best way to connect my xperia ZL to a HDTV. What I want to do on my tv is:
a)Play all my music, tons of Mp3 in my phone.
b) Plays youtube video, sometimes I have friends over and its fun to watch music video or even dance with them (lounchign playlists)
c)Browse the web on the tv.
At first I thought to buy a smart tv, but then after reading all the reviews it is not really worth it. Cause people say that browsing the web with smart tv is a pain, and most of them do not have an hard drive where I can store my music to be played, and the utube app does not have the option to add adblock in order to play a youtube compilation seamlessly when I have a gathering/party. Therefore I decided to buy a standard tv and mirrow/share my phone screen to the TV. The available options are:
1)Connect by cable. Here I need to buy an MHL to HDMI Adapter + an HDMI cable. This seems like a good solution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHa56Dm2j_8 . Wireless mouse and keyboard are an extra, I might just buy a 15 feet long HDMI cable that goes from the TV to my couch and use the phone. Do you have any experience on this? what MHL to HDMI Adapter works for the ZL (the one one the youtube video works for Z not sure for ZL)
2) Connect via the Throw sony feature. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVRV1u6qLWg I need either bluetooth or wifi on the TV, and it only works for 3 applications (walkman, album and video). You cannot throw youtube video. It could be an extra fast option to throw my music to the TV in case I am walking around the house but it would not be the solution for all the three a), b) and c) points I posted above. So this is excluded.
3)Using Chromecast. Seems like a good option. I dont know how fast and responsive it would be but it allows you to share the internet chrome browser and play utube video. But does not allow playing music I guess. And I guess no option to launch ad-free utube playlists since it would use the chromecast app to play video rite?
4)Using a android mini PC.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvozNRIms78. I did not dig into it too much. It has an harddrive where i can copy my music...but im not sure its convenient.
5)using the mirroring screen capability under settings-> display-> screen mirroring. It seems like I need a Miracast wifi gadget to add to my TV, like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgCDlrzqgdM . Cons: in the comments of the video it is said that you cannot connect to the wifi while you are mirroring, only 3G/4G I guess. What do you guys think?
6) Using NFC. Here is a ufficial video, but guys I have no idea what TV i should buy for doing this.
For what I have understood the easiest way is the old way via cable (point (1)). The only thing I am not sure of is: how can I charge my phone if the micro USB outlet is used buy the MHL to HDMI Adapter?? In 1 hour of browsing my phone will die!! could u enlighten me please?
As for wireless options, I like Miracast, but not sure if the fact that I am stuck on browsing with my 3G/4G network might be a problem. What do you guys suggest?
Thanks
A.
I'm using Chromecast, it's amazing for YouTube, Netflix, Google Play Movies and Music (for while)!
Edited: in chromecast forum you can see how to stream local video from your desktop

Yes, i can watch the video stream, frame rate is normal, if you have enough internet speed you might watch too.
With this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.actionsmicro.ezcast&hl almost everything are possible!
You need only wireless access point, TV with HDMI and Wi-Fi Dongle!
I have tried to watch video in filmon.com via ACE2 today - result you can see here - http://yadi.sk/d/4--hK3zhMa4ts
I even can watch mkv files in HD quality via smb server.
You only can't play in games on TV because ACE2 hasn't screenmirroring option.

I really hope I am not the only one with this issue. I recently purchased the official Samsung MHL 2.0 cable and noticed that when streaming YouTube or any other video through the regular web browser the audio cuts out and back in every few minutes. Although it is something I can live with it is rather annoying. Is this a known issue with this tablet?
Doesn't happen with my generic eBay cable, so no.
Get yourself a chromecast and do away with silly wires.
Thanks for the quick reply!
My Wifi kinda sucks so unfortunately Chromecast won't do me much good. I'm going to try a factory reset and if that doesn't work I'll have to return the tablet.
Maybe try a different browser or use semper vidlinks or vget to stream online videos through a media player, highly recommend mxplayer for this. As for you tube I would use the app not the browser.
Yea I think the YouTube app works, but I don't want to deal with ads (also don't want to root while under warranty)
I tried both Dolphin (adblock plugin) and NoChromo which blocks ads by default, audio still cuts out for about a second every so often.
Give vget and mxplayer a go. You can also use web video caster to do the same thing. Between the 2 almost any online video is playable via mxplayer.
So couldn't get vget to open up any videos in mxplayer or vlc, it keeps saying video unsupported, any advice?

You need to make sure that you are on the page where the playable video that you want is. Semper vidlinks is good for extracting links from web pages.
Try the page below it contains several different types that should all play with vget or web video caster.
http://www.quirksmode.org/html5/tests/video.html
Open the page then select share from the menu options in your browser, select vget, you should see the orange download arrow for each video link. Click any then select mxplayer.
For web video caster, do the same but when clicking the video link, select options then open with.
I managed to route the video through VLC but the issue still persists. I ended up returning the Tab only to find that I am having the exact same issue on my second one! At this point I am going to say it may be a compatibility issue between the tablet and my crappy comcast modem/router. Are you by any chance able to recommend a good router to go with this Tablet?
BTW I really appreciate all the help you have provided thus far!

Your router? Does that mean you are streaming media to your device and then to your TV via mhl? Have you tried playing a media file direct from your device to the TV?
No just streaming media on the tablet and hooking it up to the TV using the MHL cable. I don't know what else to do, I tested my Galaxy S5 and it plays fine, so I know it's not the cables.
EDIT: Yes videos stored locally on the tablet play fine on the TV, the problem only occurs when streaming anything.
How is the tablet connecting to your router, 2.4ghz or 5ghz?
Doesn't your TV support dlna? Most modern tv's do.
I am not sure about the tablet connection, is that something I should look into?
Our TV is almost 5 years old, we got it right before smart TV's really became a thing

Sometimes it helps to switch bands and/or Wi-Fi channels as interference can affect the connection.
Look at your tablet Wi-Fi settings it will tell you which band it is connected to.
Yea I changed channels a while ago and I also changed both DNS' to google's
How are you streaming to your tablet, which app are you using? Does the streamed media play OK on your tablet?
All streamed media be it via the browser, XBMC or VLC has the audio cutting out for about a second roughly every 5 minutes or so.

So it's the same playing on your tablet even without mhl?
Sorry had to do a quick test, videos play fine when not connected to the TV. Could it be an incompatibility issue between the TV and/or Soundbar? I know the cables are good because I tested my phone.
So the issue is tab to TV? Have you tried any lower definition movies?
Also does music play OK on its own or still stutter?
