Has anyone else noticed the weird eye in the status bar it pops up randomly and is gone very quick. What is it?
Edit: it does this when the screen rotates. Is an icon for that really necessary

It's God watching you. Just kidding, I have no idea
Unless you mean the circular dot for GPS?

Its watching you. Its probably the feature that detects if you're reading and keeps the screen awake or the feature that detects if it should rotate depending on your head position.

Under display or motion settings there is a option called smart stay and smart rotation. Read what they do in the settings and you can turn them off or on.

The smart rotation IS watching you. If your face maintains it's position, the screen rotation will not change... Weakness is in low light conditions. The eye indicator I think shows when face match keeps it from rotating.
Thank you for this thread. I thought I was loosing my mind.
That thing is CREEPY!
I love this place. All the answers. Sweet!
Edit: The eye indicator is also for Smart Stay, apparently, keeps the screen from going to sleep as long as your looking at it. I saw my screen dim out of the corner of my eye and turned to look at it when the "eye" popped up. Then the screen brightened. Came here to find out what was going on. I'm on Verizon by the way.
Confirmed

I can confirm the eye appears for Smart Stay, as I have it enabled and Smart Rotate disabled and still see the eye. I think it may appear every time it's checking, because occasionally I'll see it, but then see the screen immediately turn off.

One feature missing is:
with the S pen, hold the button and draw < or > on any screen to become back or forward no longer exist on Note 4
What I didn't figure out was how to take a screenshot with the pen. I held the button down and tapped on the screen and nothing happened. Just use the old fashioned way.

You can use the Air Command menu and launch the Screen Write feature (I have it set to launch when I press the pen button with the tip close to the screen).
Cool. How about removing the pedometer steps from the home screen? I enabled it when I first got the phone but can't seem to remember the option to disable it.

The only thing I see that would put it on the home screen is a widget.

There is a new lift to display function. Basically wakes the phone when you lift the phone - just like the proximity wave.

Ambient display needs to be enabled first, it's just above the option for Lift Up Display.

Yes, I totally agree - this is a frustrating 'update' that feels like going backward. It's great that now picking up the phone turns on the ambient display - but when the ambient display is showing, why can't I touch to interact with the notifications? Now I need to 1) pick up the phone, 2) double tap to wake, and 3) touch the notification. This adds a NEW step #2, which in addition to being annoying also hurts battery life. Why can't I just lift the screen to turn on ambient display and then interact with the notifications like previously without having to wake the phone? I used this feature multiple times per day; now I want to downgrade to the previous version!

This new system let you use off screen gestures, because in old when this ambient display appear you have to wake and re turnoff screen for use off screen gestures. Just use the power button for intereact with your notification

yes, but the point was I DIDN'T have to press the power button before. Now i HAVE to. WHY? How is this better than the previous version???? I want to downgrade. That was my favorite and most useful feature and now its gone for no reason!
Yes it a differents usages, i understand your frustrations but in Oreo ambient display work like this but notification text disappear to just let an icon..
No I like the current ambient display. Interactive ambient display ruins the purpose of "ambient display" which is just to show time and notification. People will be more cautious of touching the screen if touchable and lots of mis click when put top side up in pocket
Just wish the hours will always be red instead of just "1"

I used the interactive display with the One Plus 3 and NEVER had any misclicks in my pocket. But I DID use the functionality of interactive ambient display notifications MANY TIMES PER DAY. It's particularly useful for music. You can pause/play music from the google play notification in the ambient display without unlocking the phone. I still don't understand how it is better at all to not have the interactions be interactive?

Even if this is the way it is done in Oreo, the One Plus runs OxygenOS for a reason - to be able to customize/add features.
Please bring it back, at least have an option in the settings to toggle it on/off.
Then you're just looking for a lockscreen lol. Get an always on lockscreen...

Hi all. New on this phone, I've searched for this but could not find, so maybe someone here could help me. Is there a gesture to quickly turn off screen (had a gesture on my old nexus that was double tapping home button)?
Thanks in advance!
You could try 'Edge sense plus' (check the play store) to use the squeeze function to turn off the screen instead of launching the assistant. Personally I use nova launcher and swipe up to turn off the screen.
I'm sure there are other alternatives as well, but that's my 2 cents
I use the app called edge gestures on the play store. Works very well for me!

Is that the app that costs 1,77? Wich are the possible gestures for screen off?
Do you have the possibility to use the fingerprint sensor to turn screen off?
Thanks!
Yeah it does cost some money but I can't remember exactly how much. There is a native screen lock option for Android 9+ and I don't think there is any fingerprint gesture. It's primarily for the edges of your screen.

You could try turning on accessibility menu in the accessibility settings if you don't mind having a small icon to the right of the pill at the bottom of the screen. When you click it, there are several options given and lock screen is one. It's not a simple gesture swipe or a simple double tap but it may be an option.

Tried that, and it works, it appears a person button, and when you press it, it gives a lot of options, and the lock screen is one of them. I will keep using until a easier solution if found. I can not believe android will not include a gesture option for this by default.
I hate to have to press a button to lock the screen, they end up breaking/wearing so fast.
Thanks all for your responses, and other solutions are welcome. Cheers! :good:

Forgot to mention though that with it, when you open the camera app, you'll get this '5 second burst' label on the screen that some find annoying but I, for one, don't mind it.
Oh and when you're down and feeling blue, that small person icon seems to be ready to give a hug so just look at your phone. Hahaha

Yes now thinking it could be a accesibility info. I really do not like it. Will keep searching for other options... Don't mind to have a extra menu, but would preffer a native app and not a installed one. :good:

It's swiping/tapping from either the left, right, or bottom of the screen.
I use Wakeup touch Nexus, which, apart from letting you wake the screen using the proximity sensor, also allows you to turn off the screen by touching an icon on the desktop https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wolandsoft.wtn

Thanks, but looking for gestures apps or ways to lock the screen.
Check this widget out. It is invisible and adds double tap to lock functionality to any launcher.

Works without root in Android P or with root in Oreo and lower. In both cases, fingerprint unlocking works afterwards.

Ok, so I setup fingerprint (wow, it's significantly worse than my LG G8) so I wanted to use an alternate to unlock my phone. I set up face recognition which completed way faster than I thought. Now, for the life of me I can't figure out how to use it as the method to unlock my phone when the screen is off. I feel like I checked off all the right boxes but I still can't get it to work. Can someone please point me in the right direction here?

It seems that my ad blocking app BLOKADA was the culprit. Which is weird because it has never caused an issue before. Thanks for your input though
I use Face Unlock and Rise to wake, I don't have to do anything, but pick my phone up and it unlocks instantly
