I've tried installing two different wireless tethers and neither one wants to work. I'm rooted with stock rom. Any ideas/suggestions?

You sure its not working?? Its a adhoc connection and most tablets wont pick that up. My desktop sometimes wont either but to fix that i have to switch my wifi on the desktop off and on then it sees the connection

which rom are you using? i had that problem before when i was trying wifi tether hack apps but i download a rom that actually had the hotspot hack which allow to use the sprint hotspot and that worked like a charm.
i also suggest you to try using ( Hotspot hack ) posting on the development section.
i hope that helped
Thanks guys. I'm using stock rom. When I had my evo, it worked like a charm.

I am having the same kind of problem; wifi tether does not work. I was on rooted stock rom, then Calkulin 1.5a. On the client side, I tried Ubuntu 11.10, Window XP, both detected the ad-hoc device, but just could not establish connection. I am using the hotspot hack, which work without issue.
I'm on add ROM with sprint hot spot and it works perfectly.

Thre developer is aware and hopefully going to fix this for our phone.

" Infrastructure mode, unlike ad-hoc mode, allows multiple devices and devices that don't support ad-hoc mode to connect to the Wi-Fi access point spawned by the app, so it's definitely something we want. I've also asked about getting infrastructure mode on the*Epic Touch 4G, which uses a newer Broadcom chipset, to which Harald replied "we will see." Fingers crossed here."

I use wireless tether from the market and works great. I know on a past phone I had to create a folder on my SD card called android.tether with a bin file in it. I don't know if that is why mine works or not.

On my Sprint Galaxy Nexus when I first got it the stock wifi tethering setting worked on my stock ICS. Later on I found that it just doesn't work anymore. It will activate and appear to be working and let my laptop connect but the 3G will go away like they have some kind of built in checker.
I did some research and found out that they might have a checking system set up. Well I found out you can still use apps like Foxfi which is great but I was just wondering if there was a stock work around.
They even blocked Foxfi from the market place but you can go to there main site and download it from there.
I was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this and what kind of solutions do they use.
Right now I am using Foxfi which works perfect but I read that you can use a widget like switch pro and create a toggle to switch the portable wifi hot spot without it going through the check.
I do not want to use USB only prefer hot spot.
So please let me know all of your guys types of solutions.

Well obviously the wifi tether built in is something your supposed to pay for. For stock no, there are no mods.

I thought it was just weird because it worked at first but now it doesn't the stock version. Maybe because my phone was just still getting set up. Foxfi works for me great because I like to have hot spot but I hear PDA Net still works as well for USB Tethering.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium App
Does your Sprint tether work or do you have to use FoxFi?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium App
Just root it and tether it up
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
It probably worked because they hadn't yet blocked it for you. Then you tried to use it and they did block it.

Have you tried this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658288
I unlocked the bootloader, booted to TWRP Recovery without flashing it and flashed the tether zip. Keeps your phone stock and unlocks the built in tether. You don't even have to root.
What program do you use to unlock the boot loader or flash the roms?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium App
How in the world did you boot into TWRP without flashing it? That might not be rooted but seems like you have to flash a rom.

Do what everyone else does....
Root it (you really need to to install any decent app).
Install wireless tether from http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Always install the newest one posted (yes it's beta, but it's rock solid stable).
Which program do you use to flash things? Qdl tool or is that old school? I know there is a power house program for the Nexus but I forgot what it is its on my home computer am I out of town.
So you are saying you have to at least flash the recovery but not the from so its still a little more than FoxFi.
What's a quick step by step process because its been a while since I have flashed things. I use to flash my dell streak all the time until I got my Nexus which I love.
Why did you decide to flash? Is not FoxFi good enough and simple enough?

You just have to be rooted and then install wireless tether.
It will prompt you to allow super user access on first start, allow it and tick the "always allow this action" box.
It's bomb proof....been using it for years on numerous different phones....and numerous different carriers (sprint included).
clockworkmod tether is another no root required tether app.

I use Chrome browser on my laptop, and change the user agent to the same as the phone (there's a Chrome app). No problems tethering...
Is that USB or Hot Spot?

Looks like FoxFi is still the easiest solution.

So the title says it all!
This is aimed at us GS3 owners who are fortunate enough to be running Jelly Bean thanks to Freeza...Well one of the down sides of the LJ7 JB update is that WiFi Tether no longer works for us! What a shame!!
Well I may just have a solution that will make you and your phone very very happy.
Follow the steps below:
1) Download WiFi Tether app from Play Store
2) Open app, and hit Menu, then tap Settings
3) There should be an option in Settings to configure your device with the app, in that option change Galaxy SIII to Galaxy Nexus! This worked for me and I am now enjoying the pro's of LJ7 JB while tethering like a boss! haha
If this worked, please hit that thanks button, it helps me greatly
which app? theres tons........ and is this for rooted or non rooted??

Did you save? It should work, Its been working for me.
I am trying this but I can not make it work. The app says that it is working but nothing can see the SSID or connect.
I tried both of the nexus options and it's a no go.
Doesn't work
I'm just going to assume this method does not work. Sprint blocked the tethering in purpose, it doesn't work on jelly bean for the moment, unless you can show proof?

So this whole wifi tether issue. It seems fixable at some point and time. I had the hotspot working for like 2 days but never paid anything extra for it. It no longer works so I guess sprint is paying attention to something. LOL. I love the Jellybean though.
Tried it already...no go

Already tried them all. None work on JB...don't waste your time.
Does anybody know if it's possible to do USB tethering on Jelly Bean?
USB tethering works fine for me, using the 'easytether lite' app. Let's hope the wifi team solves the JB issue soon.

Has a solution been found yet to enable UMS on the Sprint GS3 ?
Does CM10 have this enabled and does it work on the Sprint GS3?

I personally went into the market for this same reason and haven't found a viable app or for that matter, solution to this problem.
Sent from the Wicked!
I'm pretty sure XDA featured an app on the front page a while ago.
CM10 does have UMS, and it works. The only problem I had was that it would mount the phone as a CD-ROM until I toggled USB debugging (on if it was off or off if it was on), but after toggling, it worked perfectly.
Internatonal GS3 can use the EASY UMS app, but I understand that this does not work on the Sprint variant.
Thanks for posting your experience with CM10.

Try the latest version. I sent a fix to the developer cause he was taking his sweet arse time with maintaining the thread so I got sick of waiting. You may like to try my app it's self but I modded mine for the I9305 International LTE S3, so it may not even work?
Here it is worth a shot
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/43088692/SGS3Easy UMS_1.7-LTE.apk
If it doesn't work then I posted a 'How to' in the EasyUMS thread. Although the dev may have had it removed? Anyway check the main thread out. try his 1.8, try my hacked 1.7 and then if you luck out try the instructions I posted in the thread.
if worse comes to worse and they were removed then I will dig it up and post it up here for you. I can't do it for you guys cause I don't have your device and requires digging around a little bit in the root level to discover for your selves.

People have also been using samba file sharing and/or ftp servers. Both are options if you have time to wait for slower read/wrote speeds
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I know for a fact that this is built into TWRP if you use that recovery. just go to mount > mount usb while the device is connected to the computer and bam faster transfers
When requiring UMS several times daily, the minor inconvenience of going into bootloader becomes a hassle.

Has anyone had success with getting USB MASS STORAGE working on the Sprint S3 ???
I just tried flashing CM10 (Stable and 10.1 M) No dice..
CM10 Stable has the option in Settings to change from MTP TO UMS, but after checking the box, it immediately unchecks and checks the MTP box.
Perhaps using a different kernel than stock would allow UMS ???
Anyone? .......Bueller??
Not sure if this is what you all are talking about but here is what I did.
Using Apex launcher, press/hold on homescreen, choose shortcut. Choose Activities. Scroll all the way down to USB settings. Click on it. It will expand to show USB settings com.sec.android.Kies.kies. Click that. What this does is put an icon on your homescreen that when you click allows you to choose between Samsung Kies or Mass Storage. Is this what you all are wanting is quick access to Mass Storage mode? Whats the difference between this and MTP? Either way, your internal and external storage shows in the PC right?
I'm on The People's ROM 3.14 BTW.

Nope. I have yet to get any Linux MTP programs to work with an Android device. Therefore, UMS is necessary to connect my phone to my computer.

the wifi tether for root users is not working with the liquid smooth rom just released, but the optimus DE rom works just fine as well as stock. tried reconfiguring it all different ways and mimicking the optimus rom settings I had that worked just fine. not sure why it works fine for one and not for another. any ideas?
just so everyone knows, I'm not a total noob at this. I've had a Samsung nexus S 4g forever, had it rooted for almost 2 years. great phone, moved up to the optimus for its hardware capabilities, but have had some issues with configurations on certain apps. great phone so far, the lg firmware makes it a little difficult to play around with. I've tried wiping davlik, pulling data from my other rom and everything. I went from a 4.1.2 rom to a 4.3.1 rom. i'm wondering if the 4.3 doesn't support the wifi tether? I use the crap out of it and haven't ever been billed for it. its awful handy, and sucks not to have it. tried the trevE mod version too, with the exact settings off my other rom it always starts with errors. if I turn it to NetD it works properly but doesn't show up when I scan to find it. not sure whats going on here?

Stock ROMs you have to pay for. Or root and the app.
CM/AOSP depending which one, have a free hotspot built in. I think it's usually in settings>phone or roaming. Somewhere around there on the settings.
