[Q] HTC Desire stuck on splash screen - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a htc desire that get stuck on splash screen, it can get to boot menu. I try flash it with adb commands but the system doesn't connect with it. . It has this details:
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.93.0001
MICROP-031D
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.11.05.27
HBOOT
I will appreciate a good insight from gurus in the house.

Can you get into recovery are you using cwm...?
Sent from my Desire HD using xda app-developers app

What ROM are you using? Did you do anything just before this happened?

The best thing to do is to wipe cache/data bebore re-flashing your rom and it will be fine.
I've done this every time my phone stuck on splash screen.
BTW think about making an NANDROID when your rom is fully and correctly installed, it will avoid some problem in the future

I collected it from a friend stuck to splash screen. I can actually say what happened before it got stuck but my guesses are:
1. It was on stock ROM before it got stuck.
2. It has no recovery on it.
Kindly help me out on it.

I know seems stupid, but if it sounds unrooted. Try soft reset battery out leave a bit, battery back in switch on reboot. Any luck

Try get recovery using the
PB99IMG 4ext recovery in my sig.
Put the PB99IMG.zip on ur sdcard then boot into bootloader (vol down + power) and bootloader should find the zip and ask to update recovery? Volume up for yes. Then it will ask to reboot? Volume down for no. Then select recovery using volume buttons to navigate and power to select. Once in recovery, format all partitions except sdcard, wipe dalvik. Then u can restore a nandroid backup or just flash a new rom. If u need to flash a new rom then just make sure to partition ur sdcard to what ever the rom OP requires.

Stuck on boot screen

so, I've been using the miui xj rom for a while with no problems until last night. I had to reboot my phone and after that it just wouldn't start up anymore-it just stuck on the boot screen (the one with the joker-'why so serious' lol )
so what are my options? unfortunately, I don't have a backup, at least not a recent one. is there anyway to fix this problem or do I have to flash a ROM again? right now I can't get anything onto my phone's memory card cause I don't have the micro sd to sd adapter

alpharev recovery v2.5.1.8
whatever I choose from the recovery menu doesn't work- I tried wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, backup and restore, mounts and storage-I just get a black screen and nothing happens.
so I think I should flash a new recovery image... I found this:
#METHOD 1#
Method One uses Android Flasher to flash the recovery image.
[STEP1]- Poweroff. Hold the BACK button and the POWER button to boot into FASTBOOT mode.
[STEP2]- Download Android Flasher
[STEP3]- Download the recovery image of your choice. Put it in a place you can remember.
[STEP4]- Run android flasher, tick "Recovery", and press "Begin"
[STEP5]- Browse to where you downloaded the recovery image, select it, and press "open"
[STEP6]- Wait for the process to complete.
but it's not really clear what's to be done-does the phone need to be connected to the pc? where do I save android flasher? to the phones memory card? or to the pc?
Yeah download android flasher(pc) and run it, boot your phone into fastboot (back + power) plug in usb. Do u have a recovery img?

[UPDATED] 4eXT Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5 RC9 as PB99IMG

Updated to the latest version, 4ext Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5 RC9
EDIT: No need to rename it now, just download and put on sdcard.
Edited because some people could not get it to work because renaming it was the hardest thing in the world :banghead:
All credits to Madmaxx for this great recovery....
Download PB99IMG.zip and put it on the root of ur sdcard (not in a folder) and then with ur phone off hold volume down + power. ur bootloader will look for the PB99IMG then ask u if u want to update recovery, volume up for YES, it will then ask you to reboot device, volume down for NO. Once its finished u now have 4ext recovery and just use volume buttons to navigate to recovery then press power button to enter recovery. I have tried it myself and it works, its the exact same method to install as Alpharev's hboots via PB99IMG.
Dont forget u must be S-OFF lol
Dont forget to delete it off sdcard once ur done or u will get asked to update everytime u enter bootloader

I've got a problem which is similiar,
The Desire was rooted once through alpharev, custom romed and used for a couple of days. Afterwards the rom was crap and the user decided to get back to 2.2. I don't know how the user installed 2.2 stock froyo but it was up and running again.
Now Root is wanted again, so i installed CWM 5.0.2.0 through fastboot, i can access CWM but as i select a feature like for example "wipe data/factory reset" or "reboot system now" only the background of CWM persists and the blue menu vanishes.
Returning to normal mode just through pulling the battery.

I would recommend 4ext recovery personaly. Anyway download the PB99IMG and rename it to just "PB99IMG.zip" put the PB99IMG.zip on ur sdcard, boot into bootloader (vol down + power) and it will ask to update recovery, vol up for YES then it will ask to reboot device, vol down for NO. Then boot into recovery. Check if the rom is on ur sdcard by selecting install from sdcard. Let me know what it says.
Or u can download a new rom of ur choice by searching Desire Android Development, if u do choose a new rom let me know what coz ul more than likely have to partition sdcard and change hboots.

Thank u for the quick reply. I'll try 4ext instead of cwm, but iam a little bit confused what the difference may be.
Iam familiar with rom installing and sdcard formatting with ext partition for more space, i just cannot install any rom.zip because the recovery doesn't let me access its features.

Boot into hboot with volume down + power. Scroll down to recovery and push power to enter it. All going well you should go into your recovery. If you get a red triangle with an ! Then you still have the stock recovery.
OK now scroll down and make a back UP!!! After that factory reset the device, wipe cache, dalvik cache. Data. Everything aside from your sdcard. Then reboot the device. This should get your device operational again. Reboot should take no longer than 15 minutes.
After that choose a custom rom to flash, or just go about setting up the phone as you want.
When you go to flash a new rom make sure you back up first, then wipe everything bar SD card. Then install the rom and reboot.
Good luck pal

Thank you you for replying but I did some experimenting around and I found out that the clockwork mod was a marvel recovery
I have a marvelc wildfire so I went to rezo609 folder and found the recovery img and replaced it with a clockwork marvelc img.
Then I opened the prompt selected install clockwork mod, it installed
Then I went to recovery, worked and installed the cm9 rom (marvelc) and gapps and It successfully worked
You were probably right its beta so it has some bugs
But thank you all who tried to help me I really appreciate it

Your problem is that the HTC dev method unlockt the boot loader but you are eng s-on.
So you can flash a custom ROM but you can't flash a kernel. So you need to root and unlock t again.
What I should do is relock the bootloader and flash a ruu.
After that search for the (aahk) advance ace hack kit and root t again. The good way:laugh:
Hey thx for your reply,
where do I get these ruu roms , and sould I lock the bootloader after I flased the ruu rom and how do I lock the bootloader angain ?
Thx in advance
Btw if i lock my bootloader again and run this hackkit, do I still have my recovery mod and a possibility to flas my ruu back?

Here can you find a ruu http://www.filefactory.com/f/efa28fefafc4af9c/
You can lock the boot loader whit adb " I don't know the command for that"
CWM make a backup to sdcard you never lose them.
Edit: the boot loader relock if you flash a ruu.
You can flash the ruu with the bootloader
Well i tried to flash my rom, I made with CRM and then ran the hack kit. I said i've to downgrade my android version.
After it downloaded the rom it said failed to update cuz my main version is older.
Any idea?
Does the phone boot into the rom?
If it does, is it now on a froyo rom?

Ok, it's like this. The way most people get root and recovery (and the recommended way) is through the AAHK. It gives you an option to flash a completely unlocked ENG S-OFF bootloader, which allows recovery to flash the boot image to the /boot partition too. This is what makes the phone start, otherwise it'll be stuck at the HTC Quietly Brilliant screen. Most people will tell you that you should run an RUU and get back to locked bootloader state and then run the AAHK. This IS the preferred method if you want to have a fully unlocked phone, but if you're finding it difficult to do, don't do it.
You've unlocked the bootloader using the htcdev unlock tool. What that does is partially unlock your bootloader. It allows you to flash zips to the system partition and data partition, but not the boot partition. So what happened to you was that you flashed CWM recovery, used it to flash a ROM, but it didn't boot - this is because though the ROM flashed fine, the corresponding boot image for the ROM was not flashed, so the ROM cannot start. The main headache with htcdev method of unlocking is that it leaves you with a S-ON bootloader preventing the flashing of boot image directly from recovery. You will need to flash it manually each time you flash a ROM.
The procedure to do that is -
1. Download the attached zip file, extract it to Desktop or wherever you want using 7-zip/WinZIP.
2. Open the ROM zip file you downloaded. Extract boot.img from this zip to the previously folder which you just extracted in the above step.
3. Turn your phone completely off (pull out battery). Then hold 'volume down' while pressing power and continue holding it till you see a white screen with 3 green skateboarding Androids. This is the bootloader.
4. FASTBOOT will be the first selected option in the list. Press 'Power' to select it. Make sure that now it shows FASTBOOT in red under the initial green text.
5. Connect your phone to computer. See that the red FASTBOOT changes to FASTBOOT USB.
4. Open the adb_fastboot folder, open 'Start here.bat'. It will open a command prompt window in that folder.
5. Type 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img'. You only need to do this once. It will flash 4ext Touch Recovery, which is better than CWM (thanks to madmaxx82 for the awesome recovery).
6. Type 'fastboot flash boot boot.img'. You will need to do this everytime you flash a custom ROM, but before you do so be sure you've copied the boot.img from the ROM zip to the adb_fastboot folder.
7. You should see some stuff like 'Sending data... data sent successfully'. If there's any error at this step report it here.
8. Once it has done everything and displayed a successful confirmation, disconnect phone.
9. Hightlight BOOTLOADER and press 'power' to select it. Press 'volume down' to highlight RECOVERY and 'power' to select it.
10. Once you're rebooted into 4ext Touch Recovery, go to 'install zip from SD card', browse for the ROM zip file in your SD card. If you haven't copied the zip to SD card, go back a step, connect phone to computer, select 'toggle USB storage' and then copy it onto the SD card. Once you have the ROM zip on the sdcard, go to the main screen of the recovery, choose 'wipe/format'->format all partitions (except SD card). Now go back to main screen, choose 'install zip from sdcard' and browse to the ROM zip location, select it and confirm that you want to flash it.
11. When the flash process is done, go back to the main screen of recovery, and press reboot now. You will reboot into the custom ROM.
This is the process to flash a custom ROM and get it to boot properly IF you have unlocked the bootloader using www.htcdev.com. For AAHK unlocked S-OFF bootloaders, you can just flash the ROM zip from recovery. The boot image will be flashed too.
Before trying the above try this and you might get lucky.
Boot into clockworkmod wipe data/factory reset. Wipe cache. Wipe dalvik cache. Flash the custom rom again and wait 15 mins for it to boot before giving up.

What you're saying is correct for fully unlocked S-OFF boot loaders. The ROM take sometime to boot the first time because it has to build the dalvik cache. The time it takes depends on the number of apps. Same thing happens when you wipe dalvik cache, it has to be rebuilt on boot.
But the problem here is, the OPs phone is unlocked using htcdev. With that method, the boot loader remains on S-ON. So the boot partition cannot be flashed to using recovery. The boot.img will have yo be manually flashed through fastboot, otherwise the ROM won't boot no matter how long he waits.

That htcdev unlock sounds like a nightmare. Glad I stayed away from that one... I used to flash different roms with s-on on my desire (not DHD) for a while with no problem. There was a rooting method called unrevoked that flashed clockworkmod with s-on. I guess DHD must have a different version of nand lock which restricts flashing part of the rom from zip?

Yes. The boot image does not get flashed. This is what sucks about htcdev unlock, and the reason why HTC pissed off so many people. The community asked for bootloader unlock, HTC gave a half-assed bootloader unlock. Alternative methods to gain S-OFF are always preferred. Some devices unfortunately don't have S-OFF methods yet, so they have to use htcdev unlock. HTC One X for instance, don't know about the other One series phones.

[Q] HTC One V VM CDMA Boot Loop Help

Hello, I am In serious need of some help.
My problem is that my device boots up to the HTC logo with the red writing then the lightning bolt shows and the short boot video plays but the sound is all distorted and cuts out half way through. Then it reboots. This is an endless and annoying cycle so I hold power + volume down and run fastboot to get the shutdown option.
Here is what I did.
I was trying to root my device so I unlocked the bootloader. I then was going to use r1-primo-cdma-superboot.zip but my computer was having trouble downloading the file and I ended up getting redirected to Tweaked Stock Boot.img I then flashed the device with fastboot and that .img file and got a broken phone as a result.
Since then I have tried many things including the RUU but I wasn't sure what one to use so I tried multiple RUU files that sounded right however I kept getting "error 115 : Unknown Error" when trying to recover.
I am more than happy to provide any information and I understand some is needed to properly diagnose the issue but I am not sure what information is needed or how to access it.
Also I downloaded PACman v15.3 primoc inyourface09.zip and flashed the kernel. Before I did that I only got the HTC boot image on startup. After flasing the kernel the boot loop included the lightning bolt and short boot video with distorted sound. I could not flash the ROM though because the "/sdcard" dir is an internal directory and the actual sd card dir is "/sd-ext" so the bootloader cant do it. I also tried sideloading the PACman.zip with "adb sideload PACman.zip" with no luck.
Sorry to just throw all this out there but I really don't know what else to do I have been trying to figure this out for 3 days straight lol so I look forward to hearing any advice at all.
Did you try to re flash the super boot img?

Yes I did try that but it didn't work. I think the problem is that I don't have a ROM but I also have no way of flasing the ROM to the device because the sdcard mounts as "/sd-ext" but the bootloader will only look in "/sdcard"
Thanks anyway lol
You can't access the recovery? (if you didn't flash a recovery, download one, cwm or twrp and flash it via fastboot) if you can access it it will let you install roms

I can access the recovery via the bootloader but as I mentioned the bootloader tries to find the .zip file in "/sdcard" and my sdcard mounts to "/sd-ext" also when I try to sideload via adb all I get is the adb help screen. Its like adb sideload <filename.zip> isn't the right command.

Sorry but this sdcard and sdext is confusing, access the recovery and try to install zip from sd card (or sd ext), always put the roms in your micro sd, if from the recovery you can see the rom, then you have no problem at all. Once you install the rom, you go in the bootloader and flash the kernel, but not from the recovery, you flash it via fastboot.

Ok this makes sense. So from what I can tell the device was soft bricked and the /sdcard would not mount. I saw a fix that required the stock recovery but I couldn't get it to work however I did fix the issue by flashing the TWRPrecovery.img and formatted to ext3. Now I can flash ROMs but they keep bootlooping.
The new ROM boots up and about 2 minutes after everything is done it reboots. I have tried a few different ROMs and always wipe the data and everyhting but I cant find any answers.
Any Ideas?
That's probably your same problem, give a look http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018518

I believe this will solve my issue.
My only question is what RUU do I use.
I have a VM HTC One V CDMA
Bootloader shows:
PRIMOC PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.53.0000
RADIO-1.00.00.0928
eMMC-boot
YES!!! I finally got back to stock settings. Thank you so much for all the advice along the way. xda-developers saved my ass all the way!
The last post solved the issue
Glad I helped you out

What Rom did you use
what Rom did you use that finally worked? Or did you just use a working backup.
As far as I can see, no rom has a radio yet for 1.0.0.0928.

You have twrp in your working fastboot folder and the command 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img' was used? Did it say sending recovery image in your command prompt?

You need an OTA kernel. I will do some digging and try to dig one up. I am assuming you are primou since you are using hellboy?
cant boot into recovery
Hi, dont know if im posting this in the right section, but i have my one v rooted and the bootloader unlocked. i flashed the boot.img over and it was successful. i at first kept getting the phone with the triangle and red exclamation mark then after using the all in one tool kit i recieved after trying to boot into recovery the white htc start up screen with "this build is for development purposes only". i have cwm and twrp on the phone and tried to flash the cwm boot.img if im not mistakin. i just need to know why i would be getting this and what steps i may have missed in the process would be helpful. thank you in advance.
