Samsung AllShare Cast Dongle (Video Review) - Galaxy S III Accessories

Hi all. Got my hands on a samsung allshare cast dongle. So i thought that a quick-review and setup would come in handy for some people. Since the sIII is the featured device I've made it with it. Altough it works without a problem with the Note II too since it also has the allshare cast app integrated into the soft.
Check out my vids:

do you think it would work with older TVs, like from few years old, but also having HDMI slot?

yepp it has to work!

I wonder if the Sky Go app will work with it

I noticed it has a slight lag. How does it affect gaming? And anyone else that uses the MHL adapter does it have any lag?

I have an unofficial mhl adapter, and there is a touch of lag (see the other thread in here). Videos and regular stuff are fine (Youtube HD looks great), but most games seem to have varying amounts of lag. Interestingly, Dead Trigger was completely playable but stuff like Angry Birds and especially Ski Safari were harder.

sometimes it lags in games!not all the time !

maybe you should combine it with this threat as there are already many questions answered about the dongle and its working/non-working.
In addition it seems that dead trigger runs quite smooth on your dongle, for many it is choppy & laggy, mind to share your dongle's firmware and your phone's setup?

It is Wi-Fi direct. Google the term. You don't need a Wi-Fi access point.

Laggy HDMI-out

So I tried HDMI-out on my GN2 yesterday, and while I can see the potential (Sixaxis Controller + GTA3 = awesome), it was seriously laggy, to the point that most stuff was unplayable. In addition to the input lag, there was a noticeable amount of stutter that wasn't present on the phone's screen.
Anyone find a way to fix or improve this? Is this a hardware limitation, or something a new ROM could help fix (and if so is that something we'd need the Exynos source to fix?)?
Thanks.

It could be your cable. What are you using to connect to your TV? Also, does your TV have a Game Mode? Try turning that on if it does.

I'm using this one: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galax...UTF8&qid=1358179914&sr=8-12&keywords=MHL+hdmi
Seems to have great reviews. I used it on a TV and also on my PC monitor, same results for both. It seems that this is an issue others have as well, as googling "galaxy note 2 hdmi lag" returns a few relevant results (but no solutions).
I'd happily pay for a nicer cable if I knew that was the issue, though..
Well the GS3 and Note 2 use an 11 pin connector. Older devices use 9 pin (I'm not exactly sure on those numbers). That could be your issue.

Nope, I'm sure it's an 11 pin one. Pretty disappointing, I was looking forward to the desktop dock with USB and all that, but might say forget it if it's this laggy.

Same here. I was hoping to only have to fire up my desktop if I really needed to do something heavy-duty. Maybe someone else can chime in here with more input?
U need the actual 11 pin NHL adapter, the note 2 is not in the list of compatible devices
Sent from my SGH-I317M
The one I purchased specifically said 11-pin. I think if it wasn't an 11-pin adaptor, it wouldn't work at all. Problem is, it DOES work but is laggy.
From what I know for sure, beside an 11 pin NHL adapter, it requires a power cable connected to supply power during the time you stream stuff from your phone to TV, monitor, ...
This is the must.

Yup, I have a power cable connected. I think this is another thing that would make it just not work in the first place were it not set up right.

Best way to mirror screen from a note 2 to a series 5 samsung smart tv?

I am trying to mirror the screen on the note 2 to a samsung series 5 smart tv. I want to play my psone emulator game on the big screen, I am already doing this with no problems on the phone with a bluetooth controller.
I've tried it a number of ways but none can do what I wanted, have anyone done this before got any advice?
1. Samsung allcast. Its is built into my series 5 smart tv but it seem to be only able to play music/ picture/ video content across allcast. Unless there is some settings or hack I've missed. I think its because its a old series 5 tv. the web seem to shows a lot of examples of it working on newer Samsung smart tv.
2. Mhl cable. I dont have one and so I cant try it out. I am worried the resolution may not be very good or maybe there will be some lag on say, tekken 2. Have anyone used it before got any advice.
3. Remote desktop programs. This will work fine with a pc but I cant install the required program on the smart tv to get it to work.
Thank you in advance for any help.

He dude
Search for a netgear solution.
Dont know the exact name for the device but google will help you out and you will know when you see it.
Oh yeah... allshare cast must! Work. So a modified phone will not work without an allshare cast mod ( if there is any)
Regards
Axelman
A thank you would be nice, if i helped you in any way.

For custom ROM you may need a mod since custom counter prevents allshare from working.I went back to stock+rooted+twrp recovery. For me Triangle away does the job.Allshare cast is working like a charm. However when I go to Recovery I have to reset counter afterwards - every time.
First. Thanks all for help.
I was initially trying for a inexpensive way to play ps1 games on the big screen, as the soon to be released ps vita tv prompted.
I knew you could get some sort of expensive wifi router than allows universal screen mirroring. Unfortunately they are at least £100 which sort of defeat the purpose in my case.
I am on rooted stock rom. Allcast seem to work for everything (ie photo and video) from the phone and the pc. But no screen mirroring. That is unless I am missing on some options/setting or apps.
Lastly anyone whom got a mhl cable on any advice on lags or sounds or recommendations. As a quick search on amazon will pop on hundred of mhl cable at various price £10 to £50+. It seems that upscaling the note 2 resolution to 40 inch tv might be a bit taxing for a cheap cable. I am not sure. Any tips.

The Netgear solution costs about $50,-
A MHL cable is okay, but still then ur wired and set to a distance of 2 meters max between you and your 40 inch.
Every convenience comes with a price
I got my MHL cable from china.. works great, but its not for playing games on a tv set.
If your interested in the cable,

Is Actiontec ScreenBeam Pro's miracast feature compatible with 2014 Galaxy Note 10.1?

So I noticed the older Galaxy Note 10.1 is listed as compatible with the Altec ScreenBeam Pro... I'm wondering if it also works with the newer 2014 edition. Has anybody tried? It seems to work quite well with the Nvidia Shield (Nvidia actually recommends it out of many miracast devices that they've tried. They've even worked with altec to optimize it for the Shield, so I imagine that would also benefit other compatible Android devices): http://www.actiontec.com/products/63.php

I am also rooted and MiraCast still works. It is a bit more slugish than my Nexus 7.2. Probably because of scaling down since the Nexus is the resolution as the TV. My Nexus 10 was a bit slower as well.

I have the PTV3000 dongle and the note seems to disconnect immediately after connecting to the dongle with this message "unable to start screen mirroring because of a hardware issue".
quick lookups on google seems to indicate it's related to the status being unofficial. I am wondering if you had any similar problems and if I'd appreciate if you can share your workaround if you have any.
Thanks

Nope, you just need to plug the adapter into an available HDMI port on your tv
oh cool, thank you. Was just a bit confused on that.
I've had some luck with the ptv3000 on the 2.4.26 update. YouTube videos and games almost work, but my connection just seems barely too slow to be usable. Pictures and anything else seem to work okay for me. Would the screen beam pro work any better for gaming since I'd seems to be endorsed by nvidia?
Are You using the built in screescreen Mirror app
Are you using the screen mirror in the settings or a third party app
I'm using the one in settings. Would any third party app be better?

IoGear GWAVR miracast video streaming/screen mirroring box

I just purchased this IoGear GWAVR miracast video streaming/screen mirroring box from New Egg and was wondering if anyone else has tried it with their 10.1 Note 2014? I already tried the Netgear Push2TV with the latest firmware and the connection was horribly unstable. I know there's the Samsung Allshare box but I want something that streams in 1080p. Hopefully this IoGear box works well, and I'll be sure to post any results of my experience once I get the box later this week.

Yup I got it and it works beautifully! I've had no connection issues at all and everything streams perfectly in 1080p. It's definitely far more reliable than the Netgear Push2TV.
Thank you for your replay,
I will buy it and try it too.

I've got both the PTV3000 and the GWAVR and I'm mirroring my Note 10.1 2014 kitkat and my note 2 still on 4.1.2. The PTV3000 works great on TVs but doesn't work on hometheater receivers. So I've been looking for a miracast receiver that will mirror on my Samsung Blu-Ray home theater. The GWAVR mirrors my note 10.1 with no issues, but my note 2 struggles... the note 2 gets choppy and has ghosting issues every now and again. Anyway, I'm writting to see if anyone has found or knows where to find any firmware updates for the GWAVR. I've checked all over iogear's site but can't find anything. Or does someone else have experience with the GWAVR on a theater receiver with the note 2 (kind of a long shot I know, but thought I'd throw it out there anyways).
Thnx

My GWAVR hasn't turned out to be the "miracle" streaming device I thought it would be. It sometimes works perfectly, while other times will have connection issues, and/or poor video streaming quality. It still works better than the PTV3000 but is far from perfect. Sorry to hear about your Note 2 issues. I think it's just an issue with the poor options we have for streaming/mirroring. One day hopefully a device will come out that really mirrors/streams the way it should. To be honest the best streaming I get is with my Samsung smart TV 32" LCD. This streams perfectly with my LG G2 and 10.1 2014 Note.

Did you try updating the P2TV firmware? FWIW, I have one of these and it works perfectly with my '14 Note 10.
BTW, the good news is even if you're rooted and have a custom recovery and have tripped your Knox eFuse, Allshare Cast still works (with the latest KK, at least).
Does this work with gaming?
It wouldn't framerate fast enough, I wouldn't think.
(... that being said, I've used the ASCD to watch sports streamed from my OG Note 10.1 to an 60" HDTV- it wasn't the worst picture in the world ....)

Yes i did get "a2w measy" but i wasn't happy with the quality of the picture and lags so i have send it back for a refund.
Picture looked like it was "bad quality movie" even thou it was 1080p. It is brilliant idea but need some more work on it.
I've used it on official MK9 4.3 rom to LG smart tv, picture quality was very good but it had around a 1 second lag which made it awful to use.
Actually after a LOT of reading and browsing.... I realized, that miracast is not working as it was the idea on the paper! It is just not ready for prime time...pretty similiar to Bluetooth in the beginings.
A lot of devices are not compatible with a lot of dongles. There is a lot of chinese cheap 20-30usd devices on the market, that according to sellers should support miracast, but that is more often then not not the case at all. And when someone succeeds to connect the dongle with the phone, it does not work very good at all for video casting...audio is often out of sync and video stutters and is choppy...and that is when it works at all.
So my advice to everybody is to get a TV stick/box with Android, for 50$....it will be much easy to setup for casting..and a lot more powerfull, espacially because it could do a lot of extra stuff...
regards,d

Yes I was thinking of buying it too but for me it would be so much easier to use my phone to navigate to where I want with miracast. I have tried to connect my phone to tv and use my tablet to navigate with all sorts of "remotes" from play store and it just wasn't comfortable enough to buy an android dongle.I guess i just need to wait until they will perfect miracast technology I don't mind small lags but picture quality with the compression it use is not good enough on 55 inch tv
