Rom for Kids? Suggestions? - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

You might want to go with a CM7 ROM as they have the best battery life and good compatability with a lot of market games.

I'll tell you what I did for my two year old. I installed Alien Droid, because it has the ability to hide the status bar. Installed a bunch of kids learning games and flash card type apps. And I set up a user account for him with very limited functionality (i.e. no access to app drawer). And with no access to the status bar, I can be sure he doesn't inadvertantly screw with any settings.
The only thing he can do under his account is play his games.
The only problem to that is you can switch between user accounts just by holding the power button and I haven't seen a way (although I didn't look into it that much) to protect the master user account from unauthorized access (on second thought, you might be able to set up a password/pattern protected lockscreen). Luckily, since he's only two, I don't have to worry too much about it.

Thanks guys, that is exactly the type of info I am looking for.

Sbloods cm7 would be the way to go if battery life is a top factor
I run it... charge the battery once every week with moderate use

never rooted before. read the quide. what are the pros/cons?

I've never tried modifying software on phones before, I've done wii's, xbox (original), ps3, ds, etc, and had success with them all, so I'm sure I will have no trouble with the actual process, but my question is simple, why?
right now, the only thing I really want to do that I cannot with a stock rom is change my boot animation. I've seen the "fresh" rom that I hear is one of the more common and liked roms out, and I see little visual difference from the stock one besides removal of some sprint apps (some that I could do without, and some I would have to go and reinstall).
excuse my ignorance, but what exactly would I be gaining out of this besides removing some useless nascar apps and being able to change my boot animation? also, will I have to reinstall all the apps I have downloaded/installed, the settings I've changed, etc? will I have compatibility problems with new apps that I download? will the performance be better or worse, and what about the battery usage?
I tried to look around first and some up everything I had to ask in one general post so others can learn from my curiosity. thanks in advance.
You will gain (in no particular order)
Read/write acess
acess to rooted apps like Titanium backup and wifi thether
Free wifi (with wifi thether and no longer having to foot a 30 dollar add on every month)
change/alter most aspects of the phone , boot animations and other stuff
flash awesome roms including a almost done froyo rom and a host of others
Increased battery life on all of them ( VERY SIGNIFICANT battery life)
Just having the choice to have your burger your way.
Oops , I meant phone.

I did it because I was reading about the battery life. I don't know what read/write, boot animations, etc are but I NEED the nice phone to work atleast some of the day on a battery, and with root... it was like night and day for battery life savings on the damagecontrol mod.

i have found by simply adding widgets to one of my home screens (wifi, 4g, gps, hotspot, bluetooth, and mobile) and keeping them off when unneeded, in conjunction with using task manager to kill apps after i am done using them, that i have a much better battery life than before. usually i can go through the day without charging it at all now. that is not a major concern now, more battery life is always a good thing though, but i assume that the rom would achieve this much like the way i do.
i duno. maybe i dont know enough about what you can do with read/write access and the other roms, i've seen some pics and info on froyo and while it looks slightly different, its not enough inspiration to root. it has an update all button for apps which is nice, but i really didnt see anything else completely a must have or really convenient. i guess ill have to look into the roms more to decide if it's worth it
most of the stuff you see and that the average user would care about...do not require root. just using different launchers (adw.launcher, helix, launcherpro, etc) and things like "smart shortcuts" and "Flikies HD" and "digital clock widget" allow me to get my visual layout...none of them require root.
this was my screen before root...it's not much different now.

why climb mt everest?
why jump out of a perfectly good airplane?
i like being able to take an 'image' of my phone (ie: like ghost for computers)
titanium backup is really quite handy...but really only for those that reload the phone's os on a regular basis.
i like seeing the # prompt in the cli. (but really, how many folks do?)

New here! Installed CM7 2.3.5 recently...got some gripes. Maybe better options?

Hey y'all!
Phone runs damn fast now...2500 with 1.1Ghz /75. Even got as high as 2900 with 1.2ghz BUT... some simple improvements that can be made.
1) Lack of Task Manager that came with the stock 2.2.1 ROM which had auto-end feature. I installed Process Killer app, but maybe one out there that's better? It will kill apps at time intervals, but not prevent from opening again. For example Maps opens up A LOT without me running it (among several others). Eventually, this PK app uses 20% of battery to end these apps.
I tried to install 2.2.1 ROM task manager on CM7 and didn't work. maybe there's another method???
2) I miss the Swipe feature and stock keyboard. Anyway I can transfer these over? I forgot to back them up before CM7.
3) the dialer sucks. No speed dial and doesn't bring up contacts as you type them in the dialer
4) no battery saver mode. i had to download an app. forgot the name.
5) Wasn't connected to 3G at first, but found the answer here and simply is not faster than the stock 2.2.1 ROM. I was easily pulling well over 3Mbps downloads and not uncommon to get 4,5 and even 6mbps on Tmobile 3G. But on CM7 i barely get over 3, if I get there at all. Maybe Tmo throttled back my download speeds? I have been messing with the phone for 2 weeks trying to sort everything out.
Thanks!
1) Android system itself has good memory management, i.e, it automatically closes unwanted apps to free up memory if it really needs. Using task killer apps really do have much effect (at least nothing outright). So there's really no need to have one.
2) you can get swype here : http://beta.swype.com/
3) you can try 'go dialer' or any such dialer apps from market
4) Whats battery saver mode?
5) Have you changed the baseband to your region/provider?
1 & 3 Try the Go apps option,
GoLauncherEX gives a nice launcher very similar to ADW Launcher that comes with CM7 but does add a Running Tab to your app drawer if you wish to close apps down. Although this is not really needed, as mentioned above, Android shuts down apps not needed when needed.
GoDialer/GoContacts as a dialer replacement, themeable, good options, worth a try.
5 Look in the Apps for Defy Baseband and make sure you choose the one best for you. That might help with your 3G problem
Im no expert and still a bit of a novice but switching from Stock to CM7 was one of the best things I did so stick with it and CM7 will shine through
hey guys!
i was trying to figure out if there is any clean, fast rom (gingerbread) for the motorola defy!
i've tried the cm7 2.3.7 but it felt like there was something holding the phone back, plus battery was heating up like crazy.
quad score 2200
tried miui-looks fancy, like quite a few of the options they have like pop up message and the easy customization but not that great for me because theres no app drawer.
quad score 1990
used walter's ms2ginger,like it but not that much. its the fastest of all of these.
so now what i want to know is if theres a rom for the defy that would make me go gaga over my phone all over again!
quad score 1600
not sure if this is the right place for this so apologise my noob-ness
oh and since the defy+ is out, is there a way to get a nandroid of it to install on the older defy???? (since its the same thing except for the 1ghz processor clock speed) :S
Weird, I tried ms2ginger and it's more like a faster defy stock rom with the same random lags.
I haven't tried miui, but cm7 is faster than ms2ginger and (sure) stock rom and almost never lags. If you do not need call recording and you don't care about 720p recording/playback, cm7 is the best of them.
(720p playback in cm7 is not bad, just ms2ginger is better a little)
but the camera app on the ms2 ginger is the best! lol its so much nicer looking and functioning then the cm7! :O
Thanks guys! I actually have 2.3.7 CM7, not 2.3.5

4) I have battery defender app. I shuts off the antenna after 5 min when the screen goes off. It's very similar how T mobile motoblur was on the Defy. They allowed you to set the phone on 3 different performance levels. Now that I have some of the stuff sorted out, the phone will last 2 days no problems (avg/below avg use).
5) There are 3 choices for baseband. They are (not sure of the whole name) XXXX.4, xxxx.9 and 6.0. My phone only works on the xxxx.4 choice. However, one thing i do notice on CM7 is that an 'H' shows up by the bars, whereas 2.2.1 rom just said 3G. This is something that if I had known earlier I would have checked my phone before going to CM7.
Does the APN count for anything?? I did have to enter some values for that.

check your email settings if you set that up. Mine got real hot and battery drained like crazy because it was set to retrieve every 15 minutes and I was in a place with sh*tty reception. Put those 2 together and your battery won't last long. I set my email for every hour. I also don't have any social sites setup on the phone as I don't use them (T, FB). Also try battery defender app.

New Android feature suggestions...

Is there someplace people can go to make requests for new Android features? (Someplace were developers might actually see it and perhaps implement the requests?)
I have had ideas for several features that I think would make my Android devices (I have owned about 6) far better...
- One of my ideas was the ability for more than one Bluetooth device (ie: wireless headphone/earphones) to be able to connect to a single Android device at the same time. I go running, hiking, etc... When I go alone, I often listen to music. It would be great if when I run with someone else, if they could listen to the music I am playing on my Android device at the same time I am.
- I have changed ROMs many times, but when I do, it is always a pain to have to setup (or recreate) my music playlists on the new ROM. Many (not all) Android music players seem to allow users to import music playlists that have been created on PCs or whatever. None of the music players or the Android OS itself seem to allow me to save a music playlist as a file (ie: export) that I can reload later, use on another device, or give to someone else.
- None of the Android ROMs I have come across seem to provide a (relatively easy) way to change the the the resolution (LCD density) so that I can make images and text larger or smaller on my display. This is something that is very easy to do (change a setting and hit save/apply) on every PC I have ever owned, but the few ROMs that seem to allow this seem to have a complex procedure for doing it.
- Ability to put Widgets in folders (on the desktop). I like widgets. I sometimes even like the UI of a widget better than the associated app. (Sometimes widgets provides a nice condensed view of the information/features, or provide simple capabilities like a switch to turn on/off a feature without launching menus and digging through them.) Unfortunately the Android OS (or the "Home" apps that currently exist) does not (do not) allow widgets to be put into a folder on the desktop. I would like this feature for many reasons. 1) The folder could limit the widget from consuming battery or system resources until the folder was opened. That way widgets would not use up my battery or CPU cycles until I opened the folder and looked at them.
- It would be great to have a "magnifying glass" (zoom feature) that I could use to make any specific area on the display larger (so that if I'm having trouble seeing something small on the display, I can magnify it large enough to see it).
I have more ideas, but those are just a few of the things I think would make Android devices better. Feel free to add your own suggestions to this list.
Pretty good ideas as far as magnifying just pinch to zoom in that specific area or double tap. I believe there are apps to backup a music playlist the bluetooth idea is actually kind of cool

Great ideas. I use Google Music to set up my playlists with my music on my desktop at home. No matter if I'm at work, over a friends house, or switching roms on my phone, as soon as I download google music, all my playlists and music is right at my fingertips.
As far as resolution changing, I would suggest Carbon Rom as you can change your density in less than a minute, and that's mostly because you have to reboot twice, but there are no force close issues or any of that.
As far as features go, I would like to see recovery feature addition:
The thing I hate the most about switching roms is having to log in to 15 different accounts again. I wish TWRP would construct a feature that allows me to carry over my sign in information for standard apps (Facebook, Webex, GroupME, etc.) that most people use.
Or perhaps, a ROM that offered three different login slots that attempted to log into every app that I restore using those slots first and if login is unsuccessful, THEN prompt me to enter login information.
Just a suggestion that would allow the end-user to streamline setting up his/her rom. What do you guys think?
PS: I think the multi-bluetooth device feature would be sweet as well. I have a couple of computers at home that I use my Note to control, it would be nice to have the option to control any given device in an instance.
As for resolution, that's much more easier said than done, since some apps would have to be rebuilt from the ground, or at least would have to individually be written and flashed for said resolution.
However, if there are a few apps that you really want to change (like for me, G-Mail, Chrome, XDA, gReader, etc), you really need to check out XPosed, honestly, I don't know if I'll ever buy a device that doesn't support it or something similar. It features on the fly resolution/DPI adjustments per app, one of the greatest MODs ever brought to Android, hands down.
The Note2 does what I need it to once rooted. I would like to see better prices and data first. Why have the next great thing when you pay out the ass and don't have equal speed?
I would like to see Android updates that actually make me want them, like better codex, performance, UI functions, etc. Some updates don't really seem like updates, like when Ubuntu releases a new version but you do the same thing as before, and you are left wanting more.

I agree somewhat. However, I think that the 4.2.2 roms with Linaro are noticeably faster than other 4.2.2 roms without it. Carbon is much faster without me having to use apps like Pimp My Rom and Lag Reducer without compromising my battery performance.
Halo is also another great custom feature that may one day rival the stock multi-window feature.
I also like the profile triggers built into Carbon, bluetooth and wifi triggers are wonderful, hopefully we can get some GPS triggers, then we will really be in business lol.
All in all, I agree with you though, we need some REAL POWER behind these updates. But I'm sure devs would say "Let's get some real CASH behind the devs and you guys will see some POWER!!" **Gotta look at it from both sides**

See I like Touchwiz and the stock UI bs and want more of these mods to make into a stock ROM, sometimes I wish Sammy read these types of forums.

[ROOT]Quick performance and battery life guide.

This is going to be brief for now and I'll update with links later, plus extra tips that can help a lot. Here goes.
I've been modding/tweaking android phones for around a year and had a few devices, plus done other peoples devices
You'll want to make a full backup in cwm before anything.
ALWAYS THOROUGHLY READ THE INSTRUCTIONS, GUIDES AND F.A.Q'S BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANYTHING. DO IT TWICE. IT NEVER HURTS TO EDUCATE YOURSELF BUT IT WILL HURT IF YOU BREAK YOUR DEVICE AND I WILL "LAUGH OUT LOUD" BECAUSE I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE AND YOU HAVE BE ADVISED.
Best performance mod is cross breeder, it's a tad out dated now but still the most stable and battery friendly. Also blocks ads.

A must have root app is greenify, it hibernates apps at your will or when the screen is off without freezing them etc. Basically it prevents apps and games from chewing your battery and keeps your ram nice and free. Don't use other ram apps with this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155737
DS battery saver works well and actually keeps processes dead while your phone is asleep, keeping your phone in deep sleep. I don't always use this unless I get random battery drains during sleep.

Viper4android (find in xda) is the best android sound mod but still in the works. Its immense and installs drivers that make your audio crispy clear, whilst giving plenty of extra sound features. It can be a ***** to get it working properly though.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2191223
Last but not least, Nova launcher is the best and fastest launcher with overall best features.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389071
I'm gonna update my profile on xda with all the links and from my experience and research these are the overall must haves.
Also if you haven't done already, unlock developer options by going to settings/about, scroll down to build number and keep clicking it until it says you are now a developer. This will unlock tons of developer options such as debugging and onscreen performance stats. Be careful with these and I recommend setting limit background processes to 4 on each boot, and animation scales to 0.5.
Also please note that developers of these mods and apps worked hard and deserve credit where due. Not me, I'm just an eccentric-android-person-thing. These are my opinions and should not be taken as a clear certainty, but moreover: "my favorite android ****".

thanks for sharing this with us.
I've tested the Viper4android App/Mod and it sounds really good with my Earpods
"CrossBreeder" is something I used with my SGS3 and was very happy with. Will try to install it now on my s4 mini.
"Greenify" is a very good App, that I am using for quite a long time now.
Never used "DS battery saver", but as you said you only use it when getting random drains, so I think this isn't necessary for me.
finally I don't think there is a big difference between nova and apex launcher, so I will stick to apex

Kindle Fire HD 8.9" (8.4.6).

Hi. I have some questions regarding this device, for which I've bought for my son as an Xmas gift.
Firstly I've noticed a few things and confirmed things I've researched about this device:
- It is based on Android, which was obvious as soon as I side loaded es file explorer and checked out the SD contents.
- It is running at around 30-50% of its full potential, due to the super persistent Amazon apps that run in the background, and low amount of customisation options.
- The advertisements on the lock screen... WTF.
- Unable to use mx player pro as a default video player for lovefilm, which sucks.
- The carousel is nice looking but it auto adds things which is highly annoying.
- The parental controls are good.
So that's just a small list and I'm sure I haven't quite listed everything yet but I want to move onto some questions about rooting the device:
1. Does rooting and installing cyanogenmod improve the memory use and performance? May be an obvious answer but it's always good to know people's opinions.
2. Can any of the Amazon apps be used on cyanogenmod, so that the device still feels like a Kindle. E.g. the launcher and carousel, and the parental controls? I like the big HD icons. This will be used regularly by my son so I need strong security controls.
3. Being an unofficial port, does cm come with any usual and/or unusual bugs? Such as rotation bugs, fcs and reboots.
4. Does cm use the full quality of the sound and display? The resolution and sound quality is great as it is, I'd hate to sacrifice those for better memory.
5. Anything else that I might expect or information that would be helpful please.
FYI I've unlocked, rooted and flashed many devices, so I know roughly the benefits and disadvantages.

Your questions about cm are moot at the moment as there's no unlocked bootloader so can't install custom ROMs at this time.
In regards to the Amazon apps, try using greenify to hibernate them if you're rooted. I seem to recall it can hibernate system apps but it's not recommended, so I don't know what functionality will be lost or even if it'll be stable.
