I ran a search for it in the Play Market. It showed up with an option to update, but when I do it gives me a "Package file was not signed correctly. Uninstall the previous copy of the app and try again." Since the version that is currently installed came with the JellyBean update, I can't uninstall it.
What's the deal?

I could do that, but I question why I would have to do such a thing. Is there a problem with Google's package?

Maybe it's a modified Google Search for that Rom? I'm running stock fj7 and it updated fine.

I considered that, but then, as mentioned above, the update didn't work on CM10 either.

I was able to get Google Search updated! How?? Not exactly sure!
I believe the problem may have started when I installed the GoogleNow zip file for ICS. The ROM update should have over written the file. It appeared that it had, but something else must have been lingering. I grabbed the updated apk file out of the download cache and over wrote the existing Velvet.apk. The system was satisfied that it was now up to do, but it crashed when I tried to do voice search. I rebooted, same thing. I then put back the original Velvet.apk while I was in the Google Play store. The app detected that it was changed, but it wouldn't let me update it. I rebooted again. This time the Play Store allowed me to update the app!
Not sure if I got all my steps in, but that is what eventually fixed it.
I removed the Google search app with titanium backup and tried to down again from the market and it failed to install... I rebooted to recovery, cleared cache and fixed permissions and then it installed just fine.

as I posted in another thread...
You need to be rooted, and need an app to uninstall apps and a file explorer with root access. I used Titanium Backup and ES File Explorer. Make backups if you can to be safe. If you use Titanium Backup, and already have a backup of the Swype beta, keep in mind that you will need to have your max backup settings to 2 or higher.
- Uninstall Swype
- Delete libSwypeCore.so from the directory */system/lib/
- Reboot into recovery and clear the Dalvik cache
- Install Swype!
Beta version - 1.1.1.7628
Sprint version - 1.1.0.7309

To re enable it, make sure the box is checked under LANGUAGE AND INPUT settings. When typing, swipe down to bring down the notification menu and select the option to change the keyboard.
I tried it but after uninstalling it as you said (removed with titanium, deleted the file, and cleaning both caches), when I tried running the beta installer, it keeps telling me that there is no new version for my device....
What am I missing?
When the Sprint version installs it overwrites the beta version, so if you had Swype and Swype beta, you really should uninstall both of them to be sure. The error you seem to be getting is the one I got when I had only removed the release version of Swype, not the beta/sprint version .
Double check to be sure neither one is installed. You can also check the following directories if you don't see it.
*/system/app
*/data/app

When i try to update google now i get an error saying package isnt signed correctly, delete previous version. I renamed the quick search box apk and tried installing Google Now thru the play store and i get an error saying incompatible update. Anyone else getting this error and how do i fix it?
Thanks
Try different gapps
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
That happens sometimes .. If your using inverted gapps it won't update. Do like above and flash a different gapps package.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
If u have Titanium Backup just uninstall Google search n download from market
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
I'm pretty sure it is because your GNow.apk is signed. When this happens to me on my devices, I usually go to Settings>Apps>All>GoogleSearch>Uninstall Updates. Then go into the market and it should be there for you and ready to update correctly. If you have inverted like someone suggested above, it won't update unless you do what I said above. Also once it updates, it will no longer be inverted.
Also moved to Q&A
I tried flashing a rom and ended up resetting my phone, yet i retained all my messages. So I didn't lose all my numbers or anything. I can make and recieve phonecalls and text just fine. It says i have 4g and i dont have trouble accessing the network for internet (with or without wifi) . I have all my important apps and contacts saved onto titan backup but i cant access google play store to download it. "unfortunately google play store has stopped"
Google play movies and music wont open, yet i can open samsung apps. And when I try my google app it gives me a network error
Any advice on what I can do?
Try wiping days for the play store, play store services and Google framework. Then reboot.

you rebooted after? its google services framework
so did the rom you were attempting to flash actually install?
Did you happen to flash a Verizon ported rom? I.e. synergy, axis, hyperdrive ?
Or was this a custom ROM like cyanogenmod or aokp ?

Sounds like a Gapps problem. If you're on something other than stock, go to that ROMs thread download and reflash Gapps for your ROM.

Hello,
I've been trying to update Gmail through the Play Store but it keeps giving me an error "Package file was not signed correctly. Uninstall the previous copy of the app and try again.". I don't really know what to do past this point, I'm guessing I have to flash the new version but I can't seem to find the link to it. Anyone have any links to the latest gmail or gapps I can get? Thanks in advance.
Edit: Sorry realized posted in the wrong section instead of the Q&A, if mod finds please move. Sorry for this.

Because gmail is now in the play store it isn't included in some gapps. If you are using Task's aokp ROM with his gapps, it can't be updated as he's modified it for his dark ui.
If you really wanted to uninstall it go into /system/app and delete gmail.apk
Reboot and you'll be able to install it in the play store.

Just gonna add to this that if you delete and install from the Play Store, the Dark UI won't work on it.
Thanks! Uninstalled and reinstalled through store worked. In case anyone stumbled on to this thread in the future I uninstalled through Titanium Backup, and rebooted. Deleting the APK didn't work for me for some reason.
I'm loving this rom, very smooth and stable.
However I'd like to update my youtube to the newest version, but i get the error that the package is not signed correctly and ask to remove the previous version
There are no option to remove youtube, but disable instead.
Is there a way to update?

You can try to install the apk file (HERE)
Or you can uninstall Youtube with a root uninstaller or with Titanium Backup then you install the apk file or download from Play Store.
Just after posting this question, I did one more search on the forum and most of treads orients to remove the youtube.apk
As my note 2 is rooted, I deleted the apk from /system/app. After that I tried to install from google play and got an different error.
So I restarted the device and then It could be installed from google play.
So I had no chance to test your link. But thank you anyway.
If someone is facing the same problem I was, try downloading the apk Primokorn posted and tell us your results.
