[Q] Apps safe to delete? - HTC Wildfire S

Thanks to this site I now have a rooted Wildfire S which I have added Link2sd and partitioned the SD card to put my apps on.
I have downloaded a separate message app and am wanting another music player. Although I have looked through other posts I can't seem to find a definitive list other than the advice of freezing apps for a while first before deleting
Can anyone tell me if it is safe to delete these once a replacement has been downloaded or would I be better of using another (more streamlined) ROM and adding the things I want then?
Any help and advice muchly appreciated!

Yes you can replace it with other downloaded softwares, as an advice, backup the stock software, install the replacement software you want like Go Sms Pro replacement for stock sms software and uninstall the stock one, sms and mms will now handled by Go Sms, if not then reinstall the stock one, I've once done that sms thing on my wildfire s without any problem.
Make sure backup the stock one which you want in replacement with others..

All I can say is look through system/app/ and see what looks okay 4 u.

You can just freeze the unwanted apps with Titanium Backup,

The way i tried is to make a full back up then change/modify/delete bits and bobs to be replaced eg. Standard messaging with handcent, android keyboard with swiftkey3, htc lock screen with magic locker and gallery with quckpic. Restart the phone and see if it works. In theory as long as you dont delete actual operating apps you should be fine sorry there isnt a definite answer.. Oh and i found sometimes freezing didnt work, you actually need to delete them

[Q]Application had to terminate/ Root Question

Hello all,
I am new to android and experiencing this great oss via my htc desire!
I have version 2.2 (I think it's called froyo - non-rooted).
A prolbem occurs sometimes that says (translated from greek):
"There was an unexpected termination of the application "Messaging" (process com.android.mms) Try again."
And the only button I can press is "Close (or Forced Close)"..
This does not happen only with Messaging but wit Google services and a general "Android system", as well..
The problem I 've noticed is that when entering the Messaging application it shows the sms I 've received by my contacts, but these appear not as contacts nut as mobile numbers.
In example, at my contacts, I have Mr.X with mobile number 12345.
Sometimes when I enter the messaging application, I see 12345 and not the Mr.X as sender.
This is solved by forcing the application to close via the Application Manager (or management, through settings).
What can I do to solve these matters?
Is hard/soft reset a solution?
Also if I root my device am I going to lose data?
Is there any guide to follow so as to root my mobile? (I am really new to this android stuff, but have knowledge of PCs general and psp (flashing, wich is the same with custom roms)).
I would like to save my Contacts, Messages and Applications. Which application should I use?
Thank you!
Hard reset will most likely fix it.
By just rooting you don't lose data, and after you're rooted you can make a nandroid backup.
If you want to root you can check the development section for instructions.
Edit: If you do a hard reset you will lose the data on the phone (messages, etc.), so you might want to backup them before that.
Thank you for your reply!
About the backup you've said, is there any good application to backup sms, contacts?
I am taking a backup now and using the one by sprite mobile..Is it good?
Or should I root firstly and then use another backup application that needs rooted device?
Okay I think a better backup would be MyBackup (this is only a demo but should do for you) or LifeSaver
If you root with unrEVOked you'll get a custom recovery, from which you can make a nandroid (If this sentence doesn't make any sense to you please feel free to use search to find what I mean )
Also If you have root you can use Titanium Backup app.
I believe that I got what you said..
I would have Revoked if I bought it in example from a Vodafone store right?
I think mine is not branded...so I have unrevoked?? :S
Yes, "Revoked" will work for you.
But before doing that please get to know android OS a little better, I have a feeling you are not absolutely aware what are you about to do.
So read a little bit about "rooting", you can find plenty of information in the development section.
One of the important things is to check your firmware so in case you have problems you can revert to the "out of the box" state.
Revoked will work?
I thought it is Unrevoked.. :-S
Because I haven't bought my mobile from a provider such as vodafone..
When you say, get to know android OS a little better, what do you recommend doing?
I was refering to this because I didn't quite understand you clearly.

Nevermind it is unrEVOked. And it will work, no matter where did you get your phone from. For more information on rooting and similar stuff check out this threads:

Root issues HTC Desire

Hi all, hope this is in the right section.
I rooted my Desire last night using unRevoked 3.3 with the intention of removing all the bloatware on my phone and forcing most of the apps onto the sd card.
My phone seems to have rooted fine, i have the Superuser Permissions application on there, and Titanium backup pro seems to be working too.
Now when i use Titanium backup to try and remove programs such as Stocks, News and Weather, News etc... I click on the app in the list, click un-install and then it tells me its uninstalled. However the apps still appear in my menu and are still there following a reboot. Ive also tried another method using Super Manager and that doesent seem to work either. The apps are still there following them being 'uninstalled'.
Also, similar situation with the SD card, i downloaded Move2SD enabler and that doesent seem to let me move certain apps like Maps, Facebook and others.
Any idea where im going wrong? Im on stock 2.2. My phone is in debug usb mode too.
Any help would be great.
Cheers
The apps you want to remove/move are system apps in stock roms. So you cannot do such things, because you are not s-off. But you might be able to do the things you want with adb:

How to install adb:

Or just delete specified .apk's from the .zip file before flashing.

He did not flash a rom. He is just using stock rom. There is nothing to delete from a zip file, because there is no zip file he wants to flash.
Then what i suggest is flashing custom ROM and customize it just how you like, you wont need to S-OFF. (which is much more risky than flashing a ROM)
What i would also try is application called "SystemAppRemover", i'm using it for removing all the system bloatware which you mentioned, but im S-OFF so i cannot guarantee it will work.

Maybe he wants to stay with stock rom? If he wants to flash custom rom, I guess he would have asked for it.
To remove system apps in running system with an app, you have to be s-off.

It was just a clue, had nothing to do with knowledge.
Nevertheless, we should stop filling this thread with our senseless discussion.
haha thanks for the responses guys!
ive been looking at all the custom roms and whilst most of them look pretty cool, im quite happy with whats already on there at the moment, im just bored of seeing my phone telling me i dont have enough internal space etc... so i wanted to root and move as many apps onto the sd card as possible and delete all the unwanted stuff that im constantly closing in taskiller.
i did read something about putting the phone into s-off mode, i guess this is the way to go in regards to deleting the unwanted system apps?
also i believe that i cannot move facebook or google maps onto the sd card, am i correct?
Best option is flashing custom ROM, you could remove any apps you want from the flashable .zip file, and give you an unlimited storage for apps - A2SD. (well limited by SD Card capacity)
You can also S-OFF and remove apps you dont want, but it will barely help as you will probably still run with "low internal storage" errors at some point.
Also with stock ROM you are running, most apps wont be able to move onto SD anyways.
There are custom rom's based on Froyo 2.2 if you like it.
i guess i will look into flashing a ROM. i didnt really want to do that as i didnt want to have to reinstall everything etc... but i guess its the only way i will be satisifed lol.
Just make backup with Titanium Backup and then restore it.

Understanding more after root

So i have read many post and i mean many and i am still working my brain on catching on to all these. If you all notice, there is a lot to rooting, what you can do, names to things, so so much my brain hurts lol.
But, finally after almost 2 years of being here, 3 phones i grabbed my cojones and rooted my SG2 while still stock. So here are some things. I was going nuts to get Nandroid backup, come to find out that is just a normal back up while in recovery mode.
Now i was trying to do some things with Titanium Backup but got a bit confused. I noticed that with the lite version, I can only uninstall apps not freeze. I want to clean my phone from all the clogs, especially when i notice my memory use shows most of the time 550m-769m, which i have to keep cleaning it. Hoping, removing some apps will help this. What is the difference between freezing and uninstalling. Also, i came across:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...SENVeXlqUm5vV0E&single=true&gid=0&output=html
Which it suppose to tell me which i can which i cant. Does this still apply with ICS? And looking at the list, all greens are good, correct?
Also, using root explorer is kinda weird. I was trying to install S Voice which it seems to be a big pain. For one, i have the package in a folder. When searching for it with Root Explorer, and i find S Voice, try to change permission it wont let me. Telling me the following, "Permissions change was not successful. Please note that some file systems (e.g. SD card) do not allow permission changes."
Also, trying to copy something into my system/app wont let me either.
What am i doing wrong? or missing?
thanks in advance.

I know the difference from freezing and uninstalling is that freezing halts the app from running and removes it from your app list. If you are uninstalling something you think is bloat, back it up first, in case it screws things up you can restore it. Freeze is a good way to test whether or not you want to just simply uninstall it.
Titanium Backup Pro is totally worth the few bucks though if you can afford it.. a real good buy..
As far as the other stuff, I don't mess with system/app things so maybe someone else can help with that.
For the green-coloured apps, I would make sure I have an alternate app that can take care of that feature of the phone. For example you can remove the camera app, but without a replacement/alternate app your phone won't have a camera function.
TBP is the perfect app to test whether an app is good to remove. Just freeze it and see if your phone acts up. My understanding is that freezing=not letting an app run, uninstalling=getting rid of it.
In terms of not having the permission to copy files in the system directories, you may need to install a terminal emulator to change the permissions and do the copying manually.
Thank you guys and sorry for the very late reply. Using TBP i was able to FREEZE many apps, decided to go this route, i was and still am abit afraid of damaging something and not being able to go back and fix it.
However, i still have a few situations. Even freeze so many apps my battery still dies very fax with little use i give the phone. I also see the following apps under my memory usage and i do not know what they are and if they can be froze too to even get more memory back.
Enterprise VPN Service
IPService
SIM Toolkit
CSC
Bluetoothtest (i know that is the bluetooth but do not know if there is a way to freeze this program)
Google Services Framework
Package Access Helper
com.sec.android.providers.d
Download manager
Samsung Account

Badgeprovider

for s voice there is flashable zip in that thread. Its garbage compared to siri in my opinion.

Atmazzz i want to say thank you. Doing what you said helped my hang. I do not have that problem anymore. But i am wondering if fixing the permission could have be the cause i lost S Voice talkback feature. What i mean, is that after doing the wipe cache/dalvik and fixing permissiong, now my S Voice does not talk back to me. No matter how many time i restart the phone or whatever i do, it wont talk anymore.
On another note, thanks to you, i have come to understand more about all the rooting. All i have to do now is soon gets some strength and install a new rom than stock. But there are so many, i do not know which one to use. Especially with the official ICS i bet they are better now.
I just also hope that neither of the rom come with the bricking problem. As far as i read it only happens when using ICS kernel and my phone is 0X12 so i get worry.

[Q] Can't restore Whatsapp Chats properly

Hello XDA Community,
i recently flashed a new rom to my mobile and wanted to restore my apps as
usual containing whatsapp as well. Everthing went well except whatsapp. I
tried to restore whatsapp with Titanium Backup, MayBackUp Pro and the
build-in restore function of whatsapp of course too. I tried every possible
copy and paste solution i could find on the internet but nothing helped.
The result was always the same the only thing which was restored were the
group chat names nothing else all my chats are gone.
I tried all suggestions from this Post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1268031 but nothing helped.
I switched from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1151765 to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2031467.
Please help me to find a solution. Thank You
Do you have the following folder on your sd card?
sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases
The chat backups should be stored in there. I've successfully uninstalled and reinstalled the app, and restored all the chats successfully before.
Yes i have the folder there otherwise i weren't able to use the restore function of whatsapp.
I reinstalled it dozen times but always the same result. Groupchat names visible but empty and all single chats are gone.
Thank u for ur reply
Check the files within that folder, open them up within a text editor or something, just to check they're not corrupted.
Instead of restoring app+data from Titanium Backup, clear app data then uninstall WhatsApp. Then try installing the app fresh from the Play Store first.
Open it and set it up fresh, hopefully will ask to restore the conversations by itself. Afterwards, restore data only with Titanium.
I tried what u suggested but it didnt work. I installed WA fresh from the Market set it up and after that i restored the data with titanium backup. When i start WA after this procedure WA told me the Database is corrupted and asked me if i want restore from sd-card but it doesnt matter if i press yes or no the result ist still the same. WA Groupchats restored but empty and single chats missing.
Thank u for ur reply
Hmm if it's telling you it may be corrupted, then unfortunately the database may be corrupted.
In the Databases folder, can you rename the msgstore.db.crypt file to something else, then rename another slightly older database msgstore.db.crypt-2013-08-XX to msgstore.db.crypt. Then uninstall and reinstall from Play Store again?
I'm hoping it's just the latest file which is corrupted, and the others backups are ok. You may not get all the messages back, you might lose a day's worth of messages if this works. Sorry if you've already tried this too, running out of ideas
Yes i tried this too. So i wanted to prove if the Backups are really corrupted. I installed another ROM (euroskank) and installed whatsapp through the playstore and restored all messages during the validating process. Viola 27.000 messages restored. So now i have absolutly no idea what i can do to solve it and restore it on the ROM i want.
Anyway Thanks for ur help
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda app-developers app
Hah you wouldn't believe me, that was going to be my next suggestion, restore an old nandroid or new ROM to see if it works. I didn't think it would work because it still has to refer to the files on the SD card, independent of ROM. Glad it's definitely not corrupted though
So once it's installed and working on euroskank, make another manual backup.
Then try Mildwild again, install WhatsApp from scratch, it really should work, finger's crossed!
So finally i could test it. AND it didn't work. Still the same problem. Thats insane. I tried even a previous version of the rom to test if it's caused by the latest one but no got the same result.
Thank u for ur help i appreciate it.

That is insane, that it works with one rom and not the other. Try asking in the ROM thread to see if anyone else has WhatsApp issues?

The solution that worked for me...
Hi I was having the same problem as you and also couldn't find anyone who had the same issue. Anyway I was moving from a gingerbread phone to a jellybean phone. So I used a backup app called Super Backup. I tried numerous things that didn't work. This is what I did that did work.
Also backup up your backup before you start.
1. On new phone uninstall whatsapp, then delete the whatsapp folder on the internal storage.
2. Restore whatsapp from backup app.
3. Before you run whatsapp delete the whatsapp folder on the internal storage again.
4. Copy the whatsapp folder from the sd card to the internal storage.
5. Run whatsapp.
Let me know of this works for you. It did for me.
Thanks.

Tried everything in the thread here and even restoring complete backups of the previous ROM (what works when trying to use whatsapp on a WIFI only tablet) but that doesn't even work.
I think it has something to do with the encryption in the ROM i guess or the way it stores the Phone number, as Whatsapp only wants to restore a message database for the same Phone number...

I think it has to be something like that, because just as you i have made the same transition from gingerbread to MILDWILD 14 Rom, and the problem only seems to be with the WILDWILD Rom.
any other rom that i have tested, the internal restor of whatsapp works like a charm.
So the only thing that can cause the problem is the framework/UI from the Mildwild roms.
I've written to the Dev.from WILDWILD to ask assistence, but so far no reaction.
Tonight i'm going to test a few other MILDWILD Roms to see if the problem is with all the MW roms or only with the 14

With all other Roms the WhatsApp restor works perfectly.
So for now i'm going to stay with the MW CM-8 version and try to Mod that myself a bit.
Seems to be very stable and fast, Also more options in the Camera Settings and i like the ICS look.
Only downside are the quicksettings (i like them more from MW14 or Sense)

Hi,
Sorry i have to dig this thread out, as i need help. Im also facing the same problem, trying to restore my backup file from old samsung S3 phone onto my new samsung note3 phone. I believe maybe somehow, by now, you have figured it out. I need help here. All my single chat history cannot be restored.
The backup file in the database doesnt seem corrupted. I went through a conventional whatsapp restore by pasting the file in the whatsapp database folder and launch the whatsapp after installation and restore. But still, no single chat history. Only group chats.

Contacts storage taking up all internal memory

Hi
my phone has become unusable as my Contacts Storage app data keeps filling up internal memory. As soon as I try and uninstall an app to free some memory the CS app fills it up. I have checked with Diskusage app and it's now at 3.5GB+. Tried to backup contacts to perform reset but Contacts app as well as many other apps do not open due to lack of available memory as it is all filled up by Contacts Storage. I would not like to clear data from the Contacts Storage app and lose all contacts... but what to do? Is there any viable alternative?
Thanks
Marco
Hi there!
It sounds like you have a buggy app. Is Contacts storage part of the Operating system or is it a Play Store app?

If your N3N is rooted already, check this link out. You could make a manual backup of your contacts first using that method and then factory reset or flash STOCK back to it.
If you're not rooted, consider trying it out?[you should know beforehand that this will DEFINITELY trip your KNOX counter]:angel::angel:

Thanks for the advice. It's not rooted unfortunately. I will try that. Does routing erase the contact data on the phone?
I was hoping to find a way to fix the buggy app, whatever it is, but I'm afraid I have no other option.

Oh no, it does no such thing. Rooting only allows you permission to write to your system partition. See here and here for more information about rooting an android device.
Don't rush for a quick fix. Take your time to ensure your data is backed up safely before attempting any repairs or *risky* operations on your phone. Be safe, and enjoy :highfive:

Hi, I deleted 2GB of apps... and the problem disappeared. The Contacts storage space went back to 40MB.
I backed up the contacts with Super backup and then rooted the phone anyway.
Is there any way to see (using some root enabled app) which app is causing the issue of bloated contacts storage, after I reinstall the basic/main apps like FB, Google+ etc?
I have found some logging apps on play store but not sure which one might help

That's weird!
I'm glad you got it fixed either way. I don't think that that is normal behaviour for a system app, especially if you're SURE it's the one behaving like that. It seems the entire OS might be buggy.
Best bet is to backup data, make Nandroid backup, and flash back to STOCK or a custom TW custom ROM... Start afresh - so to speak
