He meant in terminal - u need to have fastboot installed, then
$fastboot flash recovery /path/to/<recovery>.img
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Fastboot
i am on w7 not linux ;f
I was only saying what he meant. anyway, the fastboot binary should be in the android sdk. Or, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=463627
i've starded all over again,
1. installed htc sync
2. ruu with older version
3. uninstalled htc sync
4. check if drivers fron htc sync are installed
5. installed hboot android driver
6. ran unrevoked 3
now the rooting process seems to be done properly, it says "it was a triupmh", next it reboots my phone and at the end it says "Validation error: Backup CID is missing", i've tried two times.., just to be sure i checked do i have superuser icon, but it's just not there.. ; /
anyone help?

First download this ROM *RUU_Buzz_HTC_WWE_1.14.405.2_R_C_Radio_13.45.55.24_3.35.15.19_release_141106_signed.exe* after that flash you Htc with him then download *unrEVOked-3-2-Windoze.exe* and then root your Htc with it it works for me try it.
Windows users are seriously incapable of using a one-line command to flash recovery..? They'd really rather go through RUU + rageagainstthecage/Unrevoked, just to install root the "easy way" and have a GUI..? You don't deserve S-OFF.

Hey go easy on them.. I doubt they even know the full power of s-off. They're just ordinary users who want a taste of root, and they read in the forum that they need something called "s-off" to for that
Although, it does make me super jealous when ordinary users get s-off... can't help it though

Did you know that OSX is a linux? You must read a littlebit. Anyhow im magic developer and need help rooting friends WF since he has Froyo update on his phone i didnt manage to use Unrevoked method and i know he has S-OFF and had 1 thread started bu no1 gave me an right answer. So can i use fastboot commands on new Froyo updated bootloader? Or can i use this method ?
I really need help or direction to where I can get help please. I have been trying root my phone. I followed the guide on here for the Windows method and the Linux method when that was unsuccessful. The phone seems to have been rooted as I have the superuser permissions app (the ninja) and titanium backup worked once I went to the problems section and added busybox. Various other root only apps work. The app root check says I'm rooted but that I don't have busybox installed even though titanium backup says I have it.
My problem is unrevoked will not flash clockworkmod recovery. It says is firmware too new. I am on Telstra branded desire gsm on 2.1 exactly as I got it. Hboot is .75 software version 1.16 I did a factory reset and unrevoked said failed to flash recovery the first time then the next few times the usual is the firmware too new. I tried flashing the recovery using ROM manager but even that doesn’t work. I don’t know what else to do. Any advice????
I have not tried the manual method of installing clockworkmod the way it is explained on the cyanogenmod guide as I don't understand it.
I just don't what else to do. Please help me. Thank you.
hi maniacal26,
it's always better asking before than after having bricked the phone.
so now you are root, i think this is still stock rom. So it's normal that U are not busybox installed into the phone (titanium uses his own titanium... just stick fix the problem into the app titanium to get ONLT to allow titanium working fine)
You can install busybox by the market busybox
about root => get the app root checker it will tells you if U are well rooted
don't use rom manager as it a waste of time... i would advice you to use the recovery amon_RA v2.0.1 work great even to partition your sd card.
first of all you mus be sure that is a unbranded phone or branded phone
branded phone need a goldcard (look into the forum there s a lot of thread about it)
if unbranded u can use unrevoked 3.21 and select in the menu bar a presonnalized recovery which has been previuosly downloaded to your computer.
follow this TUT for branded phone as it seems you ve got one (telsra)
be caution and ask before if any doubt... ask question to this community.
there plainty members who knows a lot of stuff about android.
I have downloaded root check and it confirms I am rooted.
Busybox will not install using that app it says my nand is locked.
Titanium backup works and has installed its own busybox 1.16 even though the busybox app says there is no busybox installed and that it can't install one.
Where can I find unrevoked 3.21 I can only find 3.32 ?
I will make a goldcard now and try again.
Thank you.

Is phone really new ??
Then may be your phone is PVT4 ...
Try using Amon RA Recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839621
Also search unrevoked on xda, its very easy to use, and if your phone is pvt4, you'll also have to use AlphaRev for S-OFF ....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794314
Hope it helps
I bought the phone brand new from Telstra in Australia and never did any of their updates it is stock.
I have tried the unrevoked method that is what has given me superuser permissions it just won't flash a recovery. I have been told to use 3.21 version but I can only find 3.32 so I can't go any further with that st this point. I made unrevoked flash the anon-ra recovery but it just keeps saying is fails to flash is it firmware too new. It can't be too knew as its what the phone shipped with when I bought it in June last year.
Thank you for it suggestions. I do not have pvt4 the bootloader does not say that.
Thank-you again. I will try what u suggested and report back.

when i attempted to run it said i had the my usb cable is not connected first then upon rerunning it, it said that my ruu image is the incorrect one. my phone is a telstra branded phone i bought on a contract from telstra itself. it has to be the right one.... ????
thank you for ur suggestion. do you have any other advice?
hi maniacal26,
about the new... quite annoying since my phone bought from jan2011 is pvt4
i use unrevoked 3.21 you can donwload it by clik the name from my dropbox
the following link is amon_ra v2.0.1
from now, i use unrevoked to root and instal a recovery (wich would be cmd 2.5.3 (you can select file and choose another recovery like amon ra)
as my desire is unbranded I've never used a goldcard. so I could say more that is saying in the xda's tutorial.
from my own, i used unrevoked to root and instal a recovery - made a nand backup follow up by the alpharev 1.8 s-off.
once done i used fasboot methode to flash the recovery
Code:
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery c:\adb\amon_rav2.0.1
i bcp up all sd card on computer followd by partionning sd card with fat32 + ext3
from there i choose a custom rom (from my own - leedroid - which is the more stable and complete) that's all
since every thing work fine
(i advice to run alpharev on usb bootloader)
hope this would help
I'll put a shot in the dark here.
Download the CM7 for the phone.
If you're running ROM manager, Flash to the newest clockwork recovery first.
Boot into loader,
Wipe all data and cache memories, including Devalc
Then flash
Thank-you to everyone who tried to help me. I gave up for while and tried again. I installed amon-ra I just could not get clockworkmod to install to the phone kept saying I had too new firmware. When I tried to restore back using the original firmware off the HTC website it also said my firmware was too new and that I had to use one of the newer roms they had to offer.
I used unrevoked but chose amon-ra as alternative recovery. Worked instantly. Everything has gone smoothly since then. I am running cm7 with recommended radio. I just need to s-off to get more internal memory available.
If anyone has problems like this just amon-ra, it even worked using win 7 64-bit whereas the other way it wouldn't even work using ubunto.
As a side note I have noticed a massive slow down (compared to the fresh cm7 install speed) on the phone once there is too many apps installed. It seems to be more about number rather than size. Regardless of how many, if any at all, apps have been moved to the SD card. I found there was a Tom that said it fixed this but I'm just gonna stick with cm7 anyway. Ill just run less apps and for an update.
Also been running phone on 1113Mhz now and its not a problem in my use with overheating in case anyone was a little afraid to test out.
Thanks to everyone again and I hope this post can assist someone else who is ready to break the phone.

Hi Fellow xda.
I have flashed the official Gingerbread ota update ruu to my desire.
After that i realized that i couldnt root or go back to Oxygen rom, now that the hboot version is 1.02
Before i had hboot version 0.93 i think.
I have tried the downgrade to 2.1
and root again with unrevoked.
None of these 2 methods work.
Is there any other way to go back to rooted and custom recovery to oxygen rom or hboot 0.93?.
With oxygen and launcherpro my desire feels faster than stock sense
Anyone else have this problem?
There is currently no method of downgrading the hboot or rooting the official GB RUU.
I guess all you can do is wait until somebody figures a way to root and install custom recovery
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Ops good job I never installed this. I read others having this problem also.
Same situation, precipitaded mself, now can't root and all my backups are Titanium backups, have nandroid backups but can't use them....
damn...
isn't it possible to downgrade hboot?
I am also facing this problem. Is there any solution available now?

No solution - check Alpharev/Unrevoked updates - if there will be a solution, it will probably be in the developement section.
Someone said that they used a Froyo RUU to downgrade then they just rooted. But it didn't work for other people but I think its with a shot. Otherwise you'll have to wait.
Swyped...
Hmmmm...I did not know about this...
I did not flash the RUU directly but tried to flash the rooted or modified ones from this forum...and decided to keep InsertCoin 1.0.9
How did the devs root it then? Perhaps, try asking Baadnewz and/or NeoPhyTe for help, since they have released the rooted official update.
I don't think they rooted it as such, but more of "ported" it. I don't know a thing about rom development but go and ask him.

The difference is that when u run the ruu, it will overwrite ur hboot, ur recovery, ur rom, ecc, everything...So u lost root, because the ruu restore everything as stock.
In particular after run the ruu, the new hboot installed doesn't allow to root again and doesn't allow to change hboot at the moment.
Instead, when u flash the rooted rom based on official gb (u already have root and u don't lost it, simply), the zip contain only the rom part and with inside the super user apk (that allow root permission), so flashing it u will continue to have ur recovery, ur hboot, ur root permissions.
Instead when running the ruu, so u lost root, there is no way to install again a custom recovery and there is no way to push the super user apk into the rom (unrevoked / alpharev doesn't work)..At the moment.
From devs side, create a rooted rom is easy, as they extract from the ruu only the rom and make it rooted pushing in the zip that they are going to create the super user apk and some other tweaks to the kernel as well...All this can be done with the dsixda kitchen
I hope everything is clear now

we should wait?
Okay well then i guess im stuck like others :S
i was just thinking if there was a way to get superuser rights by using the terminal or adb.
i did also try the old root method for the desire that came before unrevoked. That didnt work.
Thank goodness...I was tempted to flash the original RUU...but my stomach told me not to do it...I would have been in the same situation if had flashed it too...
I hope there will be an easy solution in the near future for you guys

Have the same problem as others here. Tried both apk and adb with GingerBreak. No luck
...but I'm trying to play around a bit and got a noob idea to use ARUWizard to flash custom rom. I've extracted RUU 2.29 and RUU 2.3.3 and replaced 2.3.3 rom.zip with the one from 2.29. It didn't work of course as newer version has been discovered but I was wondering if it's possible just to root the standard rom.zip and put it back. Is there any chance that it works?
Have anyone rooted htc desire with Gingerbread RUU update ?

ROK here's the story. I rooted my DINC when I first got it two years ago, well my girlfriend now wants hers rooted.
I read the wiki and all that. But everytime I try it gives me an error message after the first phone boot after trying to gain root access... error can't root is your firmware too new?
Now my steps are.
Plug phone in.
Install phone drivers. (I think this may be where i went wrong)
run unrevoked3
It does its stuff and reboots phone into hboot continues to do it's thing.
Reboots phone again.
Starts asking fir root.
Then I get the error.
Can you tell what I'm doing wrong?
Do I have to install the hboot drivers on my windows 7 machine when the phone is in hboot?
Help!
Ok first,I don't believe unrevoked supports the newest firmware update, but there are other methods...
second, if unrevoked completes successfully, try manually flashing the recovery, if that completes successfully, then make a backup and flash a new rom..
If it boots up however, try downloading superuser and install it, if it works, should be good to go

Are you s-off? If so flash cwm recovery thru hboot as a PB31IMG.zip. http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/CWM_5.0.2.0/PB31IMG.zip. Then if you can access recovery use it to flash the su binary, installing the su app does not install the binary. You can go to preferencec in the su app and try installing it from there, but it usually fails. You can get the lates flashable one here. http://dinc.does-it.net/SuperUser/SuperUser_3.0.7.zip

Root and s-off are two different things, and you dont need rom manager to access recovery. However if your s-on you dont have a custom recovery to flash things in anyways.
Yes when you install the drivers you need to be in hboot to get the correct drivers.
If you ran unrevoked and it compleeted successfully you should have root and s-off. I would make sure the drivers are right, and then run unrevoked again.

OK. Unrevoked always failed. So. Must be the hboot drivers installing incorrectly.

Awesome thanks for the help I will check that out!
Hey all,
So I upgraded to a Droid DNA a couple of months ago, so I decided to root my OG Droid Incredible (SLCD).
I followed the guide here: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488351) to the letter. When I got to the step where I ran unrevoked, it flashed ClockWorkMod recovery, but didn't finish the process. So what happened is now I have ClockWorkMod recovery, and a Stock ROM that doesn't have Root access. (I downloaded a couple of different root checkers from the market and I got "no root access" results".
I tried flashing the stock recovery using the PB31IMG.zip method, but in HBOOT my phone won't recognize the file on my Micro SDcard, even though it's on the root, and properly named.
Can anyone help me get my phone completely rooted, or at least back to stock-stock so I can use a different method?
P.S I did check all MD5 sums, and the phone still works perfectly....it's just in a weird "limbo" state of rooted or not.
Thanks!

If you have cwm flashed then just flash superuser http://dinc.does-it.net/Superuser/SuperUser_3.1.1.zip, thru cwm. Then you will be rooted. Also remember to install busybox from the market.
Alternativley you could just flash a rom of your choosing, as roms come pre rooted and with busybox.

Yeah Superuser is in my app drawer. I'm not sure about the bootloader. How can I check? I've tried doing an RUU, didn't work either of the times I tried to.

Boot to hboot (vol down + power), it should say at the top. Give me all the info there. You may need to reformat your sdcard fat32 to get the ruu to work. Try going to menu settings applications manage applications all tab find superuser and clear its data. Then open superuser go to preferences and select binary update.

This is the information from hboot:
LOCKED (OOW)
INCREDIBLE XD SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.02.0000
MICROP-0417
TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC03_16AC
RADIO-2.15.10.07.07
DEC 12 2011,23:37:16
I'm guessing my bootloader is still locked then.
I've did reformat my sdcard when I was going to do the RUU but it still didn't work , but I will try that again anyway.
Cleared SU's data and did the binary update, no change. Doesn't recognize that busybox is installed, even though it's installed. Does BB have to be flashed? Because I DL'd busybox from the market.
Thanks for all the help so far!
EDIT:
I was able to RUU, using the most recent GB OTA RUU from here: http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=22 Didn't look like anything changed. I also tried flashing the stock recovery through HBOOT but I got this message:
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> Yes
<VOL DOWN> No

Tried RUU'ing already, didn't work, at least it didn't change anything.

Alright, so you're saying I should downgrade to froyo first, then achieve s-off and root?

You need to unlock the bootloader, fastboot flash cwm , flash superuser thru cwm, fastboot flash froyo misc img thru hboot, flash froyo ruu thru hboot, reunlock bootloader, fastbootflash cwm, flash superuser or a rom of your choosing. Follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506258.

Haha, I actually just found your guide too, right before I checked this thread. Alrighty, going to go through this guide.
Quick question, since I already have CWM recovery, do I need to reflash it? it is the same version (5.0.2.0). I also flashed the super user zip you posted earlier. should I reflash the one in the guide?
Thanks again so much for your help!

I would reflash it as it may not be complete do to not being unlocked. It only takes a few secs anyways.

Alright,
So I unlocked successfully, flashed su.zip, reflashed CWM recovery, and got to the busy box step.
I'm using jrummy's installer from the market, and it's telling me I have root access. But when I try to install it, it doesn't work. It just sits there "installing busybox". I also used a rootchecker app and that one says I still don't have root access, even though the busybox installer says I do. Superuser also tells me I don't have root access when I go to update the binaries.
