Hi there. I just got the tmobile galaxy 3 and rooted with odin
My question is if there is an ota update will I loose my root. Kinda confused been reading around and there are all diffrent kinda answers.
And how can I install a new rom I know it has to say tmobile but do I have to keep using odin or can I just install it from my sdcard. Seen a lot of diffrent answers on that kinda confused me. Lol
I had the my touch 4g rooted and never had an ota update and just dl the roms to my sdcard with out computer and flashed them.
And is there anything else I should do be4 going any more forword with flashing and what not lol.
Sorry if these questions have been said be4
Thank you

Can't answer your will it keep root, I've read many things also.
installing a new rom is just how it used to be on the MT4G, boot into Recovery, and just wipe data, system, cache, and then flash from sdcard.
do this as soon as possible if you are going to start flashing and test roms out. IT backs up your IMEI it happens at complete random, not very common but enough to be cautious. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801997
That's about it.
Thank you for the reply
So I can lose my imei if I flash a rom or just rooting in genral cause im not near a comp till tomorrow :-/ to back up,I still got stock rom
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
You can lose imei by just flashing the recovery I've read I believe. Its simple to back up and restore at least. And ya by computer only best to wait if you can handle it haha.

How common is this I would likevcto flash some roms and all that good stuff. I have been reading about people phones not working after rooting and applying a Rom. Should I be worried ? Should I wait? And if it's all good any methods that worked cleanly for other people ? Thanks in advance

I wouldn't say its very common as there are tons of people flashing and we dont hear about half the forum crying about corrupting their imei, thats not to say that its a non issue though. As you can probably see from the numerous threads (main one in the att development). Its advisable to wait, but with any flash you know the risk you are taking.
I was actually holding off till yesterday, ended up just saying eff it and flashed, did the non trip rooting, flashed the latest cwm from the official cwm site. Flashed Aokp, no imei wipe (was scared ****less the whole time though ) Decided i didnt even like the AOKP rom and flashed my carriers stock rom again through odin, So far so good.
However in the future im waiting for a full solution to this imei problem before i root or flash again. :good:
Id say just read the threads, if you understand the risks and want to proceed go ahead. good luck
So you went through all the steps and your fine? Thanks I may wait A week or so the stock Rom is actual nice I just like to try new stuff

yeah man i say check out the stock first, if you can wait, wait. The stock rom is best i find. and yes i followed all the steps, downloaded the latest cwm from the rom manager site and whatnot. pushed the cwm through terminal emulator on the phone.

What's the Safe way to achieve root and cwm ? I have searched and read a lot but like hearing peoples opinions

i flashed my phone with the original at&t root method (which increased flash counter). since then, i've flashed the stock rom (UCALEM) to get non-modified status, reset the flash counter, and flashed the stock update rom (UCALG1) with no problems so far. i wasn't even aware of the imei issues until poking around the forums the other day. i suppose ignorance really is bliss.
---------- Post added at 08:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:00 PM ----------
i should add.. i used the stock root injected roms (after the initial flash) from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
So ish there a chance even if we follow AT&T stuff directly? I've never heard of this happening I've had and flashed a lot of phones and never heard of such a thing should we worry or what I wanna flash but don't won't a brick

i think there's always the chance... but you can reduce that chance significantly if you read up and follow the directions.
I see that there is a growing number of people losing their IMEIs and their 4G data service from T-Mobile, as I had the same problem after trying to flash CWM Touch through ROM Manager. After flashing the recovery, I turned of the phone and turned it back on only to receive EDGE speeds. After further research I also realized that my phone has a IMEI of 0. Even after restoring my IMEI through GEEK's method, my data speeds are still EDGE even after flashing complete stock rom through ODIN, data speeds are still EDGE. Just want to know if anyone else had the same issue, after flashing CLOCKWORK Recovery or Clockwork Touch Recovery through ROM Manager.
UPDATE: Would like to know if anyone flash Clockwork TOUCH Recovery through ROM Manager and not the regular clockwork, as I remember when I flashed the regular clockwork first, everything was fine until I paid the 2 bucks and got TOUCH Recovery, is when my IMEI and 4G were lost.
I originally had CWM touch 5.5.0.4 by using the DD method through terminal emulator in order to preserve my binary counter, but then I flashed the standard clock work recovery through ROM manager and then CWM Touch which caused my IMEI and 4G to go bye bye.
I flashed cwm through Rom Manager last week and everything seems to be working fine.

Is flashing the Sprint way when the phone first came out the wrong root method?I rooted that way but have stayed on stock bc of this imei method. What is the"correct way"to root?

I would like to know this as well. I rooted using the Sprint way and have not flashed one single thing because of the imei issues.
I used that method(sprint) and still have my imei. I've flashed FreeGS3 a bunch of times and a couple of themes without iussue so far.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I used the Sprint method, and pretty much immediately flashed CapRom then redrum's FreeGS3 and Lean build, along with the Adama003 kernel. Then even flashed CM9 and AOKP. All of this was through the Sprint CWM. I finally got ancy and pushed TWRP through terminal emulator(since nobody had issues with losing IMEI with that recovery), so I would feel safe flashing JB AOKP.
I would suggest backing up your IMEI so you don't have to worry about it anymore, push a different recovery, and then go flash crazy! Here is the link to backup/restore: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29514187.
Happy flashing! I'm really digging the new Wicked blue ROM!

I used the sprint cwm & odin...via some video found in this forum that said it won't trip the counter. Lost imei & only edge. The vid did say that it would work for tmo & I read other users posts after they had done it. I didn't do anything else after that, I only wanted it rooted. Not sure what I did wrong and I really want to know.
Curious...what do they do with the phones that are returned by a customer?
You guys can back up your imei now. Its in the development section. There's even a video walkthrough.
I've flashed, backed up, and restored through different ROMs including CM9, CM10, TW roms, and EuroSkank builds...IMEI is still intact.
Used Odin to Flash recovery then used ROM Manager Premium to update to latest CWM.

i used odin to flash CWM but then i try to flash CWM through rom manager and it freezes??
any help guys?
Thanks
This thread needs to be renamed as there is no proof at all to what the op said, they lost their IMEI and want some one to blame sadly they try to blame the peeps behind rom manager and cwm touch, the same people who put tons of energy and free time to make every phone better for us.
Please op change the title or mods change it, it is not fair to the devs who work hard to have one person who has 1 post to blame them
This post is a little bit misleading. I'm sure that Kush over at Rom Manager would not appreciate a post that scares people away from using his application. This may have happened to a few people, but to state that you will lose your IMEI when you flash Rom Manager is just not true. I may be wrong, but losing your IMEI probably has a lot to do with not taking the proper steps to correctly flash a ROM.
Omg guyz iz flashed a I9300 ROM and it screwed my phone! But it was probably the CWM! Stay away from CWM guyz!

Hello,
My phone is rooted but ROM is stock. I don't generally flash anything and just stick to removing bloatware.
I installed TWRP and now I cannot get the latest official OTA AT&T update since the update load fails due to not having stock recovery. I have been searching online and cannot figure out how to get stock recovery.
I have been able to locate a supposed stock zip ROM for this phone. Can I just somehow flash this ZIP to return my phone to stock.
On previous phones I have been able to do a factory reset, which I have done several times on this phone today, in order to get it back to stock and accept OTA updates. This TWRP seems extremely invasive and I cannot get rid of it.
Thanks for any help
dave

I gave up and ended up just flashing cleanrom 3.5. Didn't wipe, kept all of my apps and data. I recommend this route if, like me, you want to keep stock kernel and tw.

I am the original poster. My phone would not flash the stock ATT rom that I downloaded somewhere. It could have been a bad ROM.
I could only end up getting into recovery and download mode. I did something to erase the entire operating system.
The guys over at TWRP or at least the guys on the message board got me through it. I ended up flashing the 3.5 clean rom. I never flashed a rom before only rooted. i also flashed the new modem zip as well. So far so good I guess.
Im going to have to figure out how to do an entire backup of my phone so that next time I can just restore it.
Thanks for the replies

Boot in to recovery (it's now an option from the power button) and follow the very easy buttons for backup. Select everything for an entire system backup (7 checks, I believe). Future backups can be just your data and apps if you want.

Well yeah, im probably gonna root and flash frosty jb tomorrow, and i need to know a few things which could brick my phone if I did, such as flashing a sprint gs3 rom on here, or restoring from different versions of android. Things to look out for when using odin, flashing deodexed, and possible actions which could mess my phone up. And i also need tips on flashing stock rooted to somethibg else

I cant decide if trolling or not....
Just read read read then when you're done reading do a bit of reading. Honestly it's not as scary as I thought. I don't know how you would hard brick one but if you soft brick it then you can Odin out. Make your backups. Wouldn't hurt to have a full stock img or root66 img on your pc. Don't flash the wrong gapps like I did.
Back up IMEI and read some more.
T-Mobile SGS III
Yeah if you go on flashing international roms, other modems then your asking to get hard bricked.

Yes stick to anything T-Mobile gs3!
Do not flash other gs3 roms, kernels.
Always make a nandroid backup using you're favorite recovery and keep it in you're sd. Heck make another copy just for you're laptop/desktop usb whatever u have just in case.
Use odin if roms start messing up. Make sure you odin to stock ( depending on what rom) im just trying to help

I'm planing to root my Sprint S3 today using QBking77 video then i'm thinking to stay with stock rom but remove bloatware using Titanium backup.
But is there anything i should do before i start rooting? i mean do i need to backup the stock rom or anything like that just in case i mess up something? i saw a lot of threads about people looking for sprint stock roms to put it back to their phones.
Please let me know before i root my phone.
Thanks in advance.
You won't be able to do a backup until after you root.
Do anything before rooting. Yes. READ.
THEN, READ SOME MORE.
and don't try installing an international ROM.

READ, and when you have read it all READ it again. Make sure you know everything. Once you root, go back into custom recovery (CWM) and do a nandroid backup. Then you can start messing with it, if you screw up your can always restore that stock nandroid you have.
Then READ some more.
