roughly 18 months ago, there was a guide on rooting. it was very extensive and it explained how to manually turn S-Off, root, create a gold card, etc etc etc.
I rooted my phone one time, and it worked flawlessly until I broke it. now I have a replacement phone, with stock 2.3.3 OS, and despite my scouring, I cannot find that lengthy guide.
I downloaded and attempted to root using AAHK, but it wont pass the USB check for some reason, even though I can access my phone through windows via the usb cable.
Anyway I'd rather not do the 1-click method, as I like to personally be in control of all steps.
so my question is, could someone either give me a brief list of the steps to take, the various software I could use for each step, OR, post me a link to the old guide that I cant seem to find...
much appreciated.
You say it fails during the usb check? Have you checked if you got usb debugging on? And seriously there won't be any easier way than AAHK which works flawless as long as you read the effen manual and follow it to the letter.

Im not looking for "easy". im looking for "familiar"! I did it once the long hard tedious manual way, successfully.
but anyway, to answer your question and without meaning to sound like a jackass, OF COURSE usb debugging is on.
any other ideas? i disabled as much software as I could from running in the background..
just comes up with
***ERROR ERROR ERROR***
Phone not plugged in
OR
Driver not installed
OR
USB Debugging not enabled.
***ERROR ERROR ERROR***
but phone IS plugged in, drivers ARE installed (several uninstall reinstalls done) and usb debugging IS enabled... so WTF?!?!?
Windows, especially pre-Vista/7, sometimes has trouble with USB-devices and their drivers. Maybe you have some other computer available where you could try it?
Not to sound like a donkey, but it sounds like your doing something wrong. With android you should be willing to root with different methods for each update or device. It worked for me when I had 2.3.3 so I can personally say it works. Did you use the drivers from the AAHK?
Also just an fyi even with an anti virus disabled it CAN interfere with the AAHK. If you simply disabled it, it might have corrupted AAHK. So uninstall that, and download AAHK, then try again.

that is pretty clear, isn't it? Have you installed the drivers with the phone UNPLUGGED??. If no, then just go to control panel, uninstall them and re install them with the phone unplugged. Then plug it in and let the drivers install.

Is there a way to root stock 2.2 that isn't unREVoked or z4root? I can't get unREVoked to work, just tells me to connect phone via usb and enable USB debugging. I have done this. Adb isn't working either, and z4root just sits at the screen for hours saying it's working. I just need a temp root for now, as I am having a usb problem where the phone reboots to 5 vibe whenever unplugged. I obviously want to get back to rooted, but just want to go one step at a time. Phone can read the SD, but my computer cannot recognize USB storage mode.
Is there a way to get this done?
Thanks,

Did you get the drivers for Windows and change USB connect to "charge only?" Not sure about how else to go about rooting to be honest.

So I recently decided to root my phone but I can't get past the actuall root process. I have the bootloader unlocked and everything but when I try to actually root it my computer can't seem to find the phone. I've attached two photos of what I'm looking at, if anyone needs more information I'll try to respond as fast as I can. I'm really confused by this. Thanks in advance
Forgive me if you did, but it's worth asking, did you wait the whole 160 seconds?

Yes I did lol, I gave it about 5 minutes then I unplugged everything and tried again, I actually got a little farther and it said <Waiting for usb debugging to be enabled>.
But now it's not even being detected when I first open the root kit. At the top it lists no devices
Edit: Uploaded a screenshot of what i have now.. It's showing two devices and another pic showing where I'm stuck with the usb debugging.

So you do have USB debugging enabled right? Lol. You also have the GNex drivers installed, right?

USB Debugging is enabled and I do think I have the correct drivers, they're the ones that come with the root kit, I've also chceked in Device Manager and it looks correct from what I've seen. I've attached a picture of what my Device Manager looks like, I know its not much but maybe it's something. I'm just completely frustrated with this, it's been weeks and I can't figure it out

The first thing to pop up is the Auto play thing, It says Galaxy Nexus so I'm guessing it does. Also in the earlier screen shots it shows my phone is connected to my computer. It will connect in fast boot and ADB.

Well... if the toolkit isn't working out for you I'd recommend you do it manually. If you have any questions, just ask.

Ok if the computer is recognizing your phone then the drivers are correct. Are you sure that Settings>Developer Options>USB Debugging is checked? If so, are you following the toolkit instructions for rooting exactly? I'm just trying to make sure that you haven't missed something like I do so very often.

I've tried this in the past, I get stuck at the same exact thing. I can never get it to recognize it. It's weird I know, Like it will show up connected to my computer and everything but when I try <adb reboot bootloader> it says something like device not found.

I'm trying superboot now, I'll post with updates. CWM hangs on downloading boot.img I think it is.
Ok Superboot worked. You're awesome I never heard of superboot before lol
Glad it worked! Sorry I didn't think about it sooner.
I started to download unrevoked onto my Evo, but the cable became disconnected.. Now, when I try to use the Unrevoked program to "reload" the program, it just sits there and does not seem to recognize that my device is connected... I do have debugging mode on, as per the instructions. Revolutionary also just waits to recognize the device. The device is recognized, as the evo tells me the debugging mode is on when the cable is plugged in.,,,
What can I do to solve this issue??? I just want to root my phone... Thanks!!!:crying:
Any other suggestions for rooting appreciated!

Hi Diva64, how far did you get in the process before the usb came unplugged? Are you able to just reboot your phone and start again? Any other information you can give to pin point what stage it went wrong and what your phone is doing, or not doing will help me walk you through the rooting process.
Thanks jOst..
I got probably about 75% of the download. The phone is acting fine... I was able to just continue on as if nothing happened.... the problem is when trying to "redownload" the revolutionary program onto the evo via the windows popup program. ... the windows computer program pops up, but says it is waiting for the device to be connected.
When I connect the evo, the notification bar tells me debugging mode is on, but nothing else happens on the evo or the windows program. I did try rebooting the phone w/no problem, and I cleared the application cache, thinking that maybe the evo thinks the download occurred... Again, the phone itself works fine in stock mode... Hope this provides some clarification! Thanks for your help!
Any help would be appreciated!! Anybody??? Thanks!!!

hey Diva64,
sorry it took a min to get back to you. Glad to hear your phone is able to go through round two..lol, ok. I have ran a virtual machine numerous times and have found these basic failures, basically to do with wrong drivers or lack there of....question...do you have htc sync installed on the pc you are rooting from? if yes, remove and go to root method.... if no, question two. Do you have the diagnostic drivers installed for your phone yet? if no, google search diag evo drivers and install. (will give more instructions as you define what or what is not missing. ) if yes, question three. did you verify the checksum of your downloaded unrevoked.exe. possibly corrupted files is why i ask. if no, check by going to download page and look for sum. after redownloading, match the sum from your pc to what is listed on the dl page. let me know what you find.
Still not rooting
I was able to make some progress.. to the point that the screen on the computer tells me it is "rooting..." it does this for a few minutes, then I get an error screen telling me "error: Failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?"
My Phone is an Evo 4g (NOT lte)
Sprint
Supersonic EVT 3 Ship S - ON
Hboot 2.16.0001
Android 2.3.3
What should I do next? Thanks!!!
You should be using Revolutionary, not Unrevoked. Unrevoked is for older Hboots. Been awhile since I used it, so not sure how much help I can offer. Biggest thing to me was making sure I had the drivers installed that are in the Revolutionary guide. Everything else was a cinch.

I read almost every thread regarding rooting, just gotten a new N7105 LTE set.
I installed kies then it's drivers, uninstalled kies. i tried installing SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_1590 as well, i tried every port available, changed cable and it just wont detect my phone.
i enabled developer option usb debugging too, plugged in phone, followed instructions and still unable to install properly. just nothing works, whats going on?
seriously no one?
I am trying to root the LG G# running on 5.0.1. I have tried every [email protected]#$%^ way and I am pissed. I tried it this way ..... http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/guide-root-method-lg-devices-t3129197 , one way script way.with the LGoneclickroottool or whatever the name is and it gets all the way to 100% but the Root checker app says its not rooted. I encountered a few errors first it was the PTP ,it would get stuck at 90% then I switched to MTP and it reached 100%.
I noticed that everytime I unplug the phone or switch between MTP or PTP the phone makes a sound and it says its installing drivers again. Could that be the problem?
I need some help with this , I have been trying for 3 fu$#@%^ hours and I cant get it to work.

Seems your in a pickle.. I used this site and it worked http://lgg3root.com/
Also plug it in and if you are PC savvy look in the device manager and see if its listed. If it is remove it (it may be listed as unknown device). then unplug the phone reinstall the driver then plug it back in and try the root method again. Hope this helps! sorry no one else is bothering to even give a helping hand.

Thanks for the help.I tried it both ways. Neither one worked. So ****ing frustrating. I didnt run into an error or anything. i was able to follow step by step the lgg3root website with no problem. And when it says done and i take the battery off like the guy says and turn my phone on Supersu does not appear on my apps or root checker say that it has been rooted. Im about to throw this **** against the floor.
And yeah ,nobody else has given me any help either. [email protected]#$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Since you're phone is running LP, use the second method in this thread...

Download and extract the New_LG_Root_v0.1_by_dig.zip file from the OP, then open a command prompt w/ admin rights from within the extracted directory..
