Yes, but this is a "software" power button, he didn't mean the hardware one...

Another great app...Thanks!!
This will save on the wear of the hardware power button greatly. Just think about how many times a day you use the power button to lock/unlock the screen, this will cut the use in half. My old HD7 didn't even "click" anymore when I pressed the power button and I forgot that it even did until I got my new replacement HD7.

1- Yes, but only to lock the device.
2- It does not affect the battery.

first: sorry for reviving this old thread.
never thought I'd ever go back to Windows Phone 7 apps. My daughter dropped her WP7 device into water. Even after several cleaning and drying attempts the power button does not work anymore. All other buttons do work.
This app was a god send! thank you. Now she doesn't have to wait for the 30s screen time out
wonder if it's possible to create an app that does a combination of Vol down and Windows button to accomplish the same.
thanks again.

yeah thanks but I was probably not clear enough and I have this already on her phone.
what I meant is an app that changes the physical button behavior of Vol down and Windows button, when pressed together, to turn screen off. The screen off tile is OK for now. The problem is that once the screen is off the only way to turn the screen off is to open the keyboard (slide phone).
The other issue is that once the phone is off you can't turn it back on because the power button is dead. So you have to plug it into a usb port and it turns on.....
cheers

[Mod proposal]: Physical answer/reject key

In these days here in northerner Italy we are having some very cold days (-7°C last night) and we have to wear gloves going out to prevent hands freezing
As we all know, with gloves on, capacitive screen is unusable at all. so i can't answer a call without removing gloves.
It would be a nice idea to implement a mod to let you answer a call or reject it by pressing volume up or volume down keys during an incoming call notification...
in Belarus was about -20°C all last week
I don't like gloves =)

Update to Froyo
Settings - Call settings - All calls - Answering call - Answering key (Accept incoming calls by pressing the home key)
There you have it. Here in Finland it's near -30°C so this has been handy
Also,
Settings - Accessibility - The power key ends calls (Press the power key to end calls. This will not turn off the screen)

Does't work in ICS an other ideas how to do it without additional applications ?
Reviving a two year old thread not a good idea bro
poor italians ... come visit my house ... I dont have problem with answering phone calls while freezing ... I cannot move at all
Stock rom have this feature, Home button to answer and power button to close. Just enable it in settings. ICS have only Power button to close call, for answer nothing. Where i live, sud italy, is not so cool also in Winter so its not a problem for me xD

[Q] Off-Key Widget on Defy?

greetings!
Just recently i got a Motorola Defy, and to be honest the top power button seems a little wimpy.
i have downloaded two apps so far to circumvent the power key;
Tap Tap App and Fix Broken Power Button.
the following problems occur when attempting to power the phone down.
In Fix Broken Power Button the widget is completely inoperative.
in Tap Tap App the screen will flash dark, then immediately come to the lock screen.
i believe this has to do with the Defy's internal workings, and have seen other people have similar problems,
see http://forum.xda-developers.com/arch...t-1017269.html
is there hope for my phone?
thank you.
Get it replaced...
Sent from my MB525 using XDA Premium App
All buttons on the Defy are "wimpy wimpy" because they are NOT the actual buttons, they are just a plastic cover over your real buttons so your phone doesn't die if you press one underwater.
The real buttons are sealed, otherwise moving them, taking pics with physical buttons or doing anything while your phone is under water would lead to water leaks inside.
About the issue with soft-poweroff, its a known issue related to how to shutoff screen on the Defy works, I dont know if any dev solved the issue

hi, thank you for the quick reply!
do you have a defy yourself? I ask because my power key is jiggly and feels weak compared to the volume keys.
having an alternate method of off/on' ing my phone would make me feel a lot more secure.
what kind of coding would I need to learn in order to learn the cause of the broken widget and fix it?
you mention using a physical key to take pictures with, but there is no such button on the defy. is there a way to map a camera button to, say, a volume key?
have you ever submerged your phone in water? I want to take under water pictures but am apprehensive to try.
why is there no longer a cake in my work urinal?
i'm sure you'll need plenty of time to pontificate on these questions, if anyone has any insight on anything mentioned in this post, please let me know!
thanks!

Yes. I have a defy, and my volume keys don't feel much different from the power key. Maybe yours is a little loose...

Some camera applications allow that configuration. The one that comes with the CyanogenMod7 rom (which I'm using ) allows it for sure.

Yes, I have submerged it while recording movies and it works fine. Make sure your rubber covers are in place and not loose, specially the mini usb one. Don't try to use the touch screen while wet, it doesn't work. The mic and the speaker will work again when dry.

- Yeah I own a Defy, and I really love my phone (pretty much after installing CM7, is just amazing)
- yep is normal the power button feeling lose, is just like I said, those are not the real buttons, just covers that presses the actual buttons under them.
If im not wrong you would need to learn the Android API and JAVA to do it yourself.
- About the physical key, that is easy to obtain, you can either use ButtonreMapper or search the Defy Photo app, is a really cool and simple camera that lets ya take pictures using the vol keys.
- Yep too, ive went into the pool with my Defy, took pictures, videos and more underwater. Just be SURE the ribbons that cover the USB and the audio jack are clean. Dust, fibers and other stuff could get between the cover and the phone and leak water in.
to this question: "why is there no longer a cake in my work urinal?"
whaa?
I use Vignette.apk full and Demo version.
Why I cannot set volume keys to take a picturs in full version?
The first option in settings is to make the volume button as cam shooter.
Vignette full version don't have select box for volume key action.

[Q] Anybody know how to add "lock instantly with power key" option in JB?

Hi! On the GS3 in Ice Cream Sandwich, the power button could either 1) lock the phone or 2) simply turn the screen off without locking, seen in the "Lock instantly with power key" toggle:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
In 4.1.1/Jelly Bean, though, Samsung or AT&T removed that toggle, forcing users to use 1) lock the phone; the entire option is now missing:
Do any smali gurus or ROM modders or anybody else know how to get this toggle back?
Try setting it the way how I have it in the screenshot. Make sure to un-check swipe lock.

Nope. I have mine with 3 mins inactivity. And using power button or after 30 second screen timeout it doesn't lock immediately. If it turn it on within the 3 minute time period, it does not show lock screen.
Try using a different launcher.

Huh. OK, thanks for the info.
Launchers can affect lockscreens? I'm on Nova and I tried the TW launcher: no dice on either.
Could it, though, be your ROM? I'm on stock. The Intergalactic v2.8 release notes lists "Many other tweaks..." at the end, which might include this functionality.

It's a known issue with the AT&T JB ROM. I've used Verizon and Sprint ROMs ported over to AT&T and the option is there and works fine. Seems like only by using a 3rd party app can you get this functionality back, unless someone had a mod that can be flashed.

I believe you can remap your keys in generic.kl to wake with volume
check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2203059
a very basic guide on how to get the .kl file then just edit as you wish
I have been looking for a solution for this for quite some time. I am using gravity off right now. I just tried to change this file many times. I commented out Key 116 and put the POWER in key 115, the vol up, but that didnt work. I then tried to comment out all the POWER buttons in the file and replaced VOL up with POWER button - that didnt work. Then i reverted back and added the WAKE to the ends of VOL up and down, and that didnt work either. After all changes, i reverted the permission to the correct values.
Any one get this to work? Stock rooted GB27.
I just took my phone into the sprint store, and they are ordering a new one. But its on backorder My upgrade is up in December and I'll probably go with the note 3, so I'll just give the new phone to my brother, since he has the EVO LTE but the screen is basically unreadable because he shattered the screen

Hardware failure is what they are there for. (Unless, apparently, your usb port is jacked, in which case they tell you its something you did, and it'll be $500 to fix...)

[Q] Pressing top of power button won't "click"

I wonder if the behaviour with power button of the Nexus 7 (2013), like in the picture :

That if you press top of the power button, you won't be able to activate the button. I wonder if this is general Neuxs 7 (2013) design fault, or the fault of my device only.
It seems that below the button something is missing.
I just like to know if you have the same experience.
PS: Pressing on the bottom of the button will activate it though, (of course pressing at the middle of it also).
Thanks for answer in advance,

Those software issues can be easily addressed but it is your choice if you want to replace it because of a faulty power button. You can minimize the use of the power button such as by tapping on the screen to turn on the display and widget on your home screen to turn off. Or by using the camera and gyroscope sensor.
@Username invalid
I'm not sure if the short periods of idleness (especially when you unlock device) of touchscreen is software issue.
I mean sometimes when you "swipe" it breaks the gesture.

This sounds interesting. I know there are widgets to lock the screen, but I am not aware of an app to replace the power button to wake up the tablet to show the lock screen. Our tablet does not have a proximity sensor.
How do you do it?
Which app from the playstore do you use?

It is not an app; it is a ROM that allows you to turn on the display by tapping on the screen. And I know it does not have a proximity sensor. That's why I said camera and gyroscope meaning turning the display on/off by tilting or waving your hand over the camera.

Yes, the Nexus does have a magnetic sensor.
