It's the screen on this machine delicate? I have not owned a case that covers the screen on a phone in decades but the guy at the Sprint store for new worried saying that was fine for my evo screen but this screen needs protection.. it's he just trying to make a sale or is this something i need to worry about. Also do you thing a screen protector is needed as well..have but used one of those since screens stopped requiring a stylus..

Android Authority dropped this sucker 3 times with minor scratches...I don't think its too delicate. However, don't drop it on the face (but that's any device, really). Be careful with screen protectors, because some will affect the way the S-pen operates. I think you want to stay away from wet applied protectors like Zagg, if I am correct.

All screens are delicate actually. I even broke the gorilla glass from my motorola defy accidentally. Use a silicone carcase, it's nasty but help to keep alive your phone.
Screen is larger, phone is heavier, that probably means it would break easier when dropped compared with smaller and lighter phones

I grabbed the case from the store that flips over as I know with it being so big I will put my keys in that pocket. If there is a magnetic one coming out I will grab that instead but for now I highly suggest the flap/case as learning to handle it is new for most of us.

I was thinking of modding the flipcase to cutout a section near the top, where the clock is positioned, to add a piece of mildly stiff flexible clear vinyl (like you get at a fabric store, they have different thickness).
I'll have to see. Don't want to make the cutout too large and have the cover be flimsy.
I have that case. Its nice, but risky to one hand open. Screen feels safe though.

Flip case doesn't protect the sides. When a phone is dropped, 9 out of 10 times it going to hit a corner of the phone. All sides of the phone are exposed with the flip case. I have one, its is nice looking but its just for home. When i go outside it will always have a gel case, just in case.

I started to type "that would defeat the purpose because it shuts off the screen" but I see your genius... You can push the wake button really quick and glance at the time without flipping. I'm wondering though, does the flip cover ignore the button when the magnet is in place?

Can't you buy a cheap clear TPU bumper to put on your flip case? Just trim the side a bit where the flip cover "hinge" is if needed?

Here's my story: I was sitting on my couch watching tv and mess in with my phone at the same time. I'm holding the phone in my left hand and decide to reach for the remote and change the channel. Unexpectedly somehow as I was reaching the phone slips from my hand and lands hard on my tile floor.
This was from couch height. The phone landed on a corner and then proceeded to fall flat on the screen.
I have no case (put off getting one..) and no screen protector. Just great.. I knew my phone was doomed.
I'm terrified I've heard about how fragile the s3 is and that gorrila glass 2 is all just crap and doesn't protect. I'm sure that my screen cracked at least a little. I pick up the phone... Nothing!
There's absolutely nothing wrong with the phone. The screen is not cracked there is no scratches or scuff marks everything is perfect. Mint condition
I'm very happy and can say that the phone is not that fragie. I think it can withstand some minor accidental drops.
Needless to say I have a case on the way, can't let this happen again!
Just thought I'd share.

I hate cases and haven't used one in many, many phones. I have had minor scratches and scuffs because of that but haven't broken a single one (*knocks on wood*). I am pretty cautious about my phones though. I just love the feel of a new smartphone and a case absolutely ruins it, even more so for the screen protectors. Every time I try out someone's phone with a screen protector it drives me crazy, feels awful and builds up grime/finger grease/dirt even worse than the glass.
I couldn't stand the thought of putting a case on such a sleek thin phone. I met a guy who came into my job who had an SPIGEN Ultra Thin Air case. It adds virtually no bulk to the device and looks nice. I doubt it provides tons of protection but definitely will help for drops on the corners.
I haven't put a case on any of my Android phones, but I just put a case on my SGS3 for 2 reasons. It keeps the camera from contacting (dirty) surfaces if I lay it on its back, and it keeps the buttons from getting accidentally pressed during handling and/or passing around to show off a picture or other screen.
When I got it, I mainly thought I would try it for the camera protection (I'm not so much worried about damage to the lens cover as I am about having to constantly wipe it off to keep the view clean). I only discovered the button protection benefit after putting it on and handling it for a few minutes.
To me, the button protection is the key advantage as every Android phone that I've ever had has been a bear to try to share/show off pictures on. Perhaps my G1 wasn't so bad, but my Nexus One, my G2, and my Sensation all had the issue that if I brought up a picture and handed it to someone they would inevitably hand it back in a few seconds because they had locked the screen - or I'd get it back on silent mode because they'd rested their thumb on the volume keys. This past weekend at a party it got so bad that when I handed it to someone they would treat it like I was handing them a radioactive snowflake - they'd be so afraid to touch it or hold it that they would then end up brushing the screen and hitting the soft keys and mess up what was displayed for fear of hitting a real button. Now, I think those issues will be a thing of the past, or at least much less of a problem.
My case is a Cygnett matte slim case from Frys. It gives a little more holding friction which is a good thing, and while that makes it slightly less easy to slide into a tight pocket, it isn't really "grabby" enough to make pockets a problem. It's more of a soft textured plastic friction than a rubberized friction.
That's awesome!!! Just at least get a gloss clear TPU case from Amazon... it's 100% clear and it protects your phone, as if you have no case on it! Don't forget a screen protector lol...

Downside is that the TPU case will no longer be clear in 3 weeks :/ It'll start to yellow.
You got lucky. Did the floor have carpet or a tile floor? I had the samething happend to me many years with my HTC T-Mobile Dash, it was charging, I picked it up and dropped on the carpet (maybe 3 feet) and shatterd the screen. Lucky for me I found a screen on ebay and replaced it for about $50. I can't imangine how much a new screen would cost for the S3.
It was a tile floor not carpet. And yeah I did get lucky...I can't afford to break this phone. Spent all my money on it. Still waiting on that white commuter case to ship though it's taking freaking forever!
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
At least there was not any sustainable damage to it. With my luck, it would have shattered. Still, great news to hear that it has some resistance to it.
Dropped my SGS3 twice, face down both times. First time on a tile floor and the second time on concrete. This was prior to having any screen protector or case. I have two light scratches as a result, which are only visible at the right angle.
Can't really complain, was expecting the screen to break with the reports we've been hearing.
I would definitely cry if I dropped this phone. The S3 is too amazing to fall! I put a case on mine for that reason but I take it out every so often just so I can enjoy the nice slippery but sexy feeling of it naked lol.
I got the ghost armor kit for this phone in carbon fiber white on my white version. Not using the screen protectors at the moment.

What kind of mark is on the screen? Could something have gotten caught between the cover and the screen? I have been using the titanium model and got the flip cover to avoid scratches and screen protectors.
I'm thinking about drilling a hole in mine where the led is so when its closed I can see it.
Its the outline of the protective part, its about a mm inside around the whole bezel. If you look at the flip cover the ibside part which protects the screen has a drop off from foam. Any marks on your model.

I did that, looks and works great, I just need to add some paint to retouch it. I used a dremel tool to make the hole and then widen it. However beware that the felt on the back doesn't cooperate too well. So take an exacto knife to it to clear out the hole and round it perfectly. I then used the dremel to sand it down smooth and it should look good once I put some dark grey paint on the sanded area

Negative, mine is still pristine and it's been used since launch. (First one sold at the store here)
I was drinking a soda and it went down the wrong way and made me cough some up and a few drops got on my phone so I decided to clean it off with a wet coffee filter.
In doing so I noticed a spot where I always slide my finger to scroll down the water just stayed there, it's like it wore something off and now I can't see it just feel it sort of tacky. Never used a screen protector I love the smoothness of this screen.
Anyone else notice this? I hope it doesn't keep spreading.

He's not worried about that, its the wear he noticed while wiping off the few drops.
There must be some kind of coating on the gorilla glass that wore off in that area, which is odd.. but it must be what gives the screen that nice feel. I wouldn't worry about it if it doesn't affect the feel or look at all. Try a hard style screen protector, they are usually really smooth. I actually like the basic ones from the T-Mobile stores, very smooth. Zaggs are too soft for my liking.
Coatings are really common. I'd be that's indeed what it is and the only solution would be to replace the glass.
I always use screen protectors - I can't predict when I'm going to do something particularly stupid.
I have owned a zagg really nice, but yes very soft. I was thinking one from spigen. But do the tmobile ones cover the whole screen?

They don't unfortunately, they go past the button and around the earpiece a bit but not edge to edge due to the curving. The spigen one is one I have been wanting to try when this one wears out. It has the curved edges to cover the whole screen without bubbling or peeling slightly like the regular hard style ones do.
Anyone know of any TPU cases that have a nicely raised lip that would protect the screen? All of the TPU cases I've seen are just flat around the screen and shattering it is what I'm worried about most.
This is the one I use, and it works great. Especially for the price.

I've been considering this one but I'm a little unsure. Do you think it's raised enough to prevent the screen from hitting the ground if it were to fall facing down?
Yes I have this case and several others. It would protect it from scratches but its not really impact resistant so the screen would probably break. I use my casemate tough 90% of the time. It offers better protection than any TPU case without adding much weight or bulk.

I have the same matte black Diztronic case linked here, and it has protected my phone through 2 falls, one of which was on the screen. They were both from pocket height and one of them was onto sharp gravel. Phone still looks good as new. If I were to buy another case though, it would be the gloss smoke one. The matte one is kind of slippery, but it is better than the phone alone.
If you want uber protection, buy an otterbox defender. I've seen a S3 wearing one take a dive off of a second story roof onto a concrete sidewalk and the case wasn't even scratched.
I've been using the standard diztronics cases for a while and then a few months ago I started using this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007AXMF62
The white really does look sexy on a black phone. The Cimo S-Line has textured sides as well so it's easier to hold on to. I've dropped the phone a few times in the parking lot at work and have yet to take any damage. Great cases

I'm on my second S4. The first one the bezel cracked above the earpiece. Actually it was the chrome plate that cracked. Within less than 48 hours of having my replacement, the chrome is wearing off on the top left corner. I'm f*cking pissed. Not pissed enough to make my phone look like a turd with some bulky case though. And definitely not pissed enough to buy a htc lol. I contacted Samsung and t-mobile and they are both giving me the runaround. I baby my devices. Here's another thread with somebody with a similar issue. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41472121&postcount=1
Same, just got a chip on the bezel today. I had similar issues with the GS3, but there's not a whole lot you can do if you don't like to use cases like me, since the frame is just metallic-looking plastic.

True that. I always laugh when I watch the video of people scratching their Gorilla Glass with a key. What a joke. :laugh:Try a piece of sand............

just carry in pocket.. sometimes with keys or a pocket knife.. no damage yet.. but i will take causion to not have anything else in the pocket with phone i guess
i had mine for about 2 weeks just carrying my pocket before my ottor box and screen protector came in.
still looks brand newI would carry 2 sets of keys sometimes pocket knife or tools. I would also crawling on the ground under cars. I guess its just hit or miss with quality.
I got a body glove case for mine now. Ive found the phone feels much more sturdy with the extra weight of a case, and having a rubberized case really improves grip on the slippery plastic of the phone.

I ended up with a very small scratch on my screen also, about as long as a dime is wide. but I have no idea how it got there, I always keep my phone in my left pocket and keys in the right with my pocket knife on my right pocket using the pocket clip. this Gorilla glass is good for avoiding deep scratches I think but I thought gorilla glass 3 would prevent minor scratches like what I have. apparently not..

I never understood that. It's like having a supermodel girlfriend and then covering her up with a burka, it defeats the purpose. In 2 years when you upgrade to a new phone this old one will be in perfect condition but you don't really get to "enjoy" it.
I always go naked, who cares if it looks used when its time to upgrade, it just goes in my junk drawer anyway.

You're assuming that the phone looks better "naked" than with a case. You may think that, but others disagree, making the supermodel analogy flawed. 99+% of the enjoyment comes from the screen, not "touching the case", and a screen protector doesn't prevent that enjoyment (like having the supermodel wear a perfectly transparent bikini). A better analogy would be demanding that your supermodel girlfriend go barefoot all the time, even when walking on gravel, hot asphalt, and broken glass, or having her go naked in subzero weather. Hardly a good way to treat her.
