I just picked up this phone and can't get on the internet while on a phone call. Does it support simultaneous voice and data while on 3g like the galaxy s3? I changed mobile settings but still no go.

I thought the simultaneous-ness was due to the S4 Snapdragon and it's radio's being placed in different places.
I had this work on my HTC EVO LTE
WHAT??!! This was huge on the S3. Man, I'm thinking twice about upgrading to the Note2 now.
This phone really can't do simultaneous voice+data? Exynos fail.
I believe Sprint 3G never support simulteneous voice/data. When you make a call data drop to 2G. That said, 4G WiMax can be use with voice. I believe LTE is or will be also, but I don't remember for sure.

To each their own, but the simultaneous voice and data was a nicety, not a necessity.
Sent from the second version of a hefty "Note" pad.
I was thinking about getting the S3 because of this, but I'm almost always around Wifi at home & work. The phone can do voice & data assuming it has either a Wifi or LTE connection, right?
Also and somewhat related, is the Note 2 HD voice ready? I'll be moving to an LTE covered area in the near future, so I'm REALLY hoping for a yes on this.

I love it. Here comes all the jealous and hating owners of other phones trying to say our phone sucks cause they can't chat and surf the web at the same time. I say big freaking deal who the hell talks that much anyways any needs internet at the same time? Is it really a deal breaker? I seriously doubt it. All you guys would swap phones with us in an instant.

The assumption here is that when LTE hits "our" market, you will be able to do this correct?
For me, I assist my kids' soccer teams. There is nothing like having a parent call you for directions and being able to mark their current location then provide real time directions from their current location.
So, yes, to "some" of us it is important.
Deal breaker, no, "if" its coming.

I agree that it's not a huge deal. Just an annoyance. Sometimes I am downloading small files from internet on 3g at work(no Wi-Fi ) and receive a call. If I answer, download fails, so I either can't answer the call or have to restart download. With my slow 3g that is kind of a pain in ass.

Having left Apple after being an iPhone owner since the 3rd generation, I can say that I am neither jealous or a hater... But, not having Voice and Data is just "stupid" especially when it was on the S3, which I would venture to guess is where a lot of Note 2 users will be migrating from... Just my 2cents...

It seems like sprint isn't doing commercial for it. Samsung is the one thats pushing commercials out for all 3 variants for usa networks.
They started pushing commercials out a few weeks back, but you really have to focus on the commercial in order to actually see that sprint carries the phone cause they mix all 3 phones together as if they are exactly the same.

While I do believe your seemingly knee-jerk complaint (that LTE chugs juice - which is well known), you really need to cycle the battery 2-3 times before complaining.
A fresh first ever charge on a brand new battery is never stellar.

At this stage LTE is something better left turned off unless you need it. Emails being pushed over LTE is a waste of battery. I find LTE to be too power inefficient at present so I don't even consider LTE phones, hence why I have the gsm version of the Nexus..and my battery life is just fine.

Yep. Unless LTE drastically reduces latency then it's like 99% useless to most of us.
If it operates on 700 MHz or some other low frequency like I think I've read then that would be a real saviour to the Verizon folks since the high frequency they operate their current 3G on has serious issues inside buildings.

I've always said this myself. Unless you pay for tethering and need to download .iso images at breakneck speed, LTE on a cellphone is kind of silly.
OMG 32mbps on my phonez!!
I just don't get how 32mbps can "better" stream what 5mbps can do just fine?
But Verizon fans always have their safe ground to say "well, at the end of the day Verizon has better coverage" which is true, but I can count the number of times on one hand ATT had spotty coverage for me in the past 6 years...

LTE download speeds are insane. I'm thinking most people with LTE have tether and use LTE to replace home internet service.
1.8 might be "good enough " for you but I find myself waiting for pictures to load and apps to download a lot. Then again I rarely see more than 1 on 3g. 4g is welcome here.

I believe it is since it has the same internals of the Skyrocket just with a bigger screen and s pen. Which means just a lash of our modem on the Gnote(At&t), it should allow the phone to work on 3G.
Well the good thing about the note is that we will get even more development from our older brother.
The past few months, my iPhone loving coworker has been telling me, "it won't be long before you see morons walking around with 7 and 9 inch tablets up to their ear as their cell phone." Looks like his prediction is getting really close to becoming reality.

My father recently decided to pick up a s2 and doesn't plan on using it for anything other than calling, texting, and calendar reminders. In fact, he WON'T even have a data plan.
He's coming from a dumb phone that'll give him wonderful battery life so this phone's battery life will be a sort of shock.
I'm wondering what are some ways to ease that battery life.
I've come up with
-custom rom& kernel
Underclocking
CPU sleeper
Autobrightness
2G only
Data off
Sync off
Wifi Bluetooth gps off
Any other tips you guys have? Help is much appreciated.

I'd like to suggest Darkside v8! That rom is incredibly stable and well developed.
If you want to save a lot more battery, I'd like to suggest SetCPU and just downlock. I doubt your dad would be able to tell an immediate difference between 1.1-1.2 ghz VS. 1.5ghz. Plus, make sure you install CPUspy and BetterBatteryStats to make sure that the phone is actually entering into 'deep sleep' mode.

I have a family plan. My brother's line was up so we upgraded his line (which already has a data plan) to the s2 and we're giving the s2 to my father. My father is simply going to be putting his sim in the s2 (and my brother will be keeping the same mytouch he has at the moment.) Tmobile will not add a data plan and force my father to use one as his line was not the one upgraded.
And this isn't att where data is added to lines automatically

And what features are you talking about that he won't take advantage of?? Any phone released In the last 2 years is capable of everything this phone is minus NFC and speed if were talking single core. If anything I would get him a phone of this caliber instead of a crappier android phone that's going to be much harder to deal with. My mother has a cheapo tmo android phone and its hell to use. Crappy touch screen, ect. I think the t989 is a great choice for anyone not looking for all the bells and whistles. Anywho...

My father is like your father he asked me which phone was better the Driod or the iPhone. And i like looked at him as if he were high or delusional.. I told him none lol.
But yes i agree with the other user who recommended darkside v8. I recommend STOCK or any TouchWiz ROM. As for the comment "paying for extra features when he wont use them" Well if you already have the s2 which is collecting dust why not put it to use? I wouldnt recommend going out and buying an S2 to not use. But if one already has it then what the heck? lol.
As for data, T-Mobile allows any phone to not have a data plan. Im on the value plan, and if i wished, i could get rid of everything but talking minutes.

That went way over your head. He wasn't making a literal comparison. Basically saying "why would you pay more for features you aren't going to use."

No, it didn't. That was a bad analogy. Maybe if he was talking an s3 or something but this phone is pretty basic and to the point when it comes to smartphones. And what features are you talking about that he won't take advantage of?? Any phone released In the last 2 years is capable of everything this phone is minus NFC and speed if were talking single core. What features am I talking about?
Everything having to do with data..(unless your on Wi-Fi)
And do you mind sharing the "bells and whistles" the s3 has that ours doesn't? It is a SLIGHTLY improved version of the s2 that does all the same things..

Ive had several smartphones, notably the Tmobile Comet (Running Froyo FYI), LG Mytouch, and the S2. The S2 is FAR from basic. If you every tried those phones, you will know. As far as battery life, try juice defender. Use the extreme profile, will save you a ton of battery life

Why would he even want an S2 in the first place. If he's never going to use it fully? That's like buying the fastest $3500 gaming PC in the world and never using it. Just curious. Not trying to troll or anything.

S3 is not all that better. S2 is nowhere basic if you know how to use it.

For ****'s Sake, can someone just answer his question without telling a full grown man how to spend his money?
I love how infatuated with this phone some of you are. Anyone who says the s3 is a slight improvement over this phone is horribly mistaken. I play with my buddies s3 from time to time.. side by side app loading is much faster, gets more FPS while gaming (dead trigger runs smoother on the s3 despite it pushing almost 3 tines the amount of pixels, the 720p screen is much better, the 2gb of ram really comes in handy (have any of you ever noticed how laggy and stuttery the t989 gets when updating apps from the play store? The s3 is completely smooth while updating) the cameras snapshots have better PQ.. everything about the s3 is better. Of all the handsets I've owned I've never seen such infatuation and naivety in its xda forum section. :-/ makes me hurl.
