Hello all,
currently running Modaco's rooted official fro-yo update (free version, not kitchen)
so yes i am already root.
i have a hboot 0.83 desire with the SLCD screens. i have used the patched image and used unrevoked method to root as modaco's method would not work.
i have 2 problems and any information would be grateful.
1)recovery issue
while holding down vol down + power and then selecting recovery to boot into recovery sometimes i will get into clockwork recovery and other times the phone will just hang on a white htc screen (not the black one when using wrong recovery!)
it is lucky when i do get to boot into recovery using this method.
i have tried connecting up the desire to the pc and running unrevoked again (using ubuntu 10.04) to try load the recovery menu again. same results though. sometimes i may get lucky and it will boot into recovery. a lot of the times it will just hang on a white htc screen for ages and not boot into recovery. this is frustrating when i try to change roms.
for example im having an issue with this current rom so i flash leedroid. all respect to him his rom is good. but i think its loaded with a lot of apps which i dont require.so i require to boot into recovery and adb remove the applications from the system partition and the data partition.
2)problem with modaco's rom
maybe not the right place to post this and i would receive better help at modacos website.
never the less someone maybe able to help me.
flash player doesnt seem to work at all on this.i visit the flash player site. it will usually tell you and show you a flash movie to say flash is installed or if not will tell you to download and install, in this situation pointing to market.
at this stage when it points to market i get a message saying "item not found"
so this means i dont have access the the full market for this device.
i could on the other hand unzip leedroids great rom and remove all the apps that i'm not intrested, resign and flash, but again i have issues with recovery.
any help would be appreciated
Thanks in advance
Hey,
There's quite a few people having the same issues.. some say it's because of LeeDroid ROM that's causing the issues, others say it's not. I for one am having the same issue only after I flashed LeeDroid. Since then I've flashed Open Desire and still having the smae issue.. never had the issue when I originally flashed Cyanogen.
However, someone noted that when booting into recovery.. do not touch any buttons or press anything until AFTER the SD check is complete. I tried this method.. and Clockwork Recovery loaded up just fine. It's not a corrupted image issue because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.. there's some sort of conflict somewhere.. that's my guess.
have you tried perma flashing a recovery using Unrevoked?
Thanks for the replies guys.
@Quazis
intresting that you mentioned leedroid. i too had flashed that and to think of it i bleieve i've had problems since then when i wanted to revert to modaco's 2.2 official fro-yo release.
thanks for a reply to the matter. when i boot pressing volume down and power into the bootloader, then select recovery from there, press power to select and then i do not press any buttons until recovery is installed. but i will try again.
@LennyUK
whats perma flashing?
i have flashed using unrevoked and i have to select a custom recovery image and select the SLCD image.
could you please explain further?
i have also tried to redo this process when booting into recovery failed using other attempts.
thanks for your help guys
i may create a gold card and flash the generic RUU with hboot 0.83 onto the vodafone branded desire and then unrevoke that in an attempt to fix the problem
hi guys,
hallo to everybody, greats job here!
I'm just wondering witch is the right recovery image to use with unrevoked 3.1, I tried to use the default one and when I go into recovery mode my screen become black and I must to remove the battery before going on.
someone can please help me?
regards

Well with Unrevoked once used you boot holding volume down and power
It then opens the HBOOT screen, wait for it to do its weird loading thing then select "recovery" using volume keys and hit the power button, the phone should then say "HTC" and should then proceed to boot into your recovery (I use Amon-Ra this way and then clockworkmod if I need it via rom manager).
I have not had any issues getting into recovery this way at all.

Hi Lenny,
thanks a lot for your answer!
...my problem is that when I do the procedure you've written:
- root by unrevoked
- holding volume down and power
- waiting till SD checks
- select Recovery by power button
...I can see the HTC screen and after that everything is black, the phone power off by itself and I cannot see any Recovery Menu. Than I must to remove my battery to be able to use again the phone.
I've tried once with clockworkmod recovery image and once with Amon-Ra but nothing change... I really don't know how to going on!
grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
thanks a lot!

Miniera,
I think you have the SLCD version of the phone. If you're using the stock image, it won't work cause that's for AMOLED screens.
If you goto the Desire development section, there's a tutorial in there how to root SLCD version of the Desire with HBOOT 0.83. See what you can find in there and I'm sure you can get it to work
Or re-use Unrevoked, it has the SCLD compatible version of clockwork now.

me too lol
i will try unrevoked again (for linux) and see if this looses my recovery screen blank or not. if it does i will flash the SLCD.img version again.
again could someone explain what prema flashing is please? lol
well just flashed
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...-froyo-pre-rooted-no-hboot-with-radio-deodex/
and everything works fine. except the recovery issue caused by the leedroid rom.
it took me 15 attempts to boot into recovery
got there and flashed this. and everything flies. sadly i had to reboot as i wanted to adb push some files from another build into this and well it took me a further 7 attempts to boot into recovery.
wish there was a fix for this

flash using the SLCD clockworkmod.img file found in the 0.83 hboot root guide in the development section. you will then see the menu
Just to update if anyone else reads. flashed the WWE 2.1 T2 for hboot 0.83 on and then re-rooted. fixed the problem and roots into recovery every time.
leedroid blames on bad nand sectors. i doubt a new desire will come with such a defect. but im not going to insult his work because its good, maybe not for me but its still damn good!
in the end ive solved my problem
Ok, I have been looking for a solution to my problem, without any solution so far. I temp-rooted my phone with visionary. As soon as I rebooted my phone, the furthest I could get is the HTC load screen. I have set up every zip I could find in hopes that one would let me set my phone back to operational status. Nothing is working. Does anyone know what I can do to get back. If you need more information, please let me know.
Try the Q&A forum, which is the right place for questions like this
Can you get into recovery or fastboot? Try holding down the volume button while holding down power when powering on. Also, try holding the action button while holding the power button while powering on. If nothing happens then your almost out of luck. If you get fastbook (white screen with multicolored text as opposed to recoveries one color and black screen) you can adb push a rom onto your phone and fix it.
I didn't have a problem with visionary but I think my phone was rooted when I got it.

I am s-on. or at least I was. I have been following the link you sent me, but I cant do anything because it is constantly saying the device is offline. it was an ota g2.
Can you get into hboot ? With the phone off, hold Volume Down then press Power.
If you can get into hboot then at least you can flash a ROM from your SD card.
If you can get into recovery from hboot, then you can use adb from there, but you can't use adb if the phone is stuck at the startup logo.
Sometimes it seems that if you go into the stock recovery (when you see the screen with the red triangle, hold Volume Up and then press Power), you can try mounting everything you can to see if that makes a difference to being able to boot.

ADB will not connect to my phone. It recognizes it, but says it is offline. How can I fix that issue?
I had the exact same problem and fixed it. Go into your hboot mode and do a factory reset from the phone.....I was stuck in a boot loop. I think I was s off at the time

You still not have awnsered any questions from the above posts. Can you get into the HBoot screen (phone off, then volume-down+power)? If yes what does the first line say on the page with the skateboarding andriods? It should say VISION PVT SHIP(orENG) S-OFF(or S-ON)? What does it say?

adb won't work while the phone is stuck in the boot loop, I said that you need to get into recovery to be able to use adb. But as joemm said, we still need you to try the other stuff that you haven't commented on, i.e. getting into hboot in the first place.
S-ON with Vision PVT SHIP
This shouldnt be happening if he was just using a temp root. It might cause instability while the phone is on, but once it turns off the root is gone, the software is reset. Did you attempt to perm root with visionary? also, if he isnt rooted, the phone will be able to recover itself easily from the boot recovery. unless he doesnt have an sdcard with the recovery on it. also this all means that if he isnt perma rooted, he wont have a custom recovery.
Anyways, Pull the battery, press the powerbutton while holding the VOLUME DOWN key, use the volume keys to select recovery after it performs the test, and select restore phone or whatever it says in the orig recovery.
edit: dont forget to put the battery back in before you turn it on.

the version of visionary that I had (r10) doesnt have the perm root option. Does visionary automatically update?
no visionary was taken off the market after version 10? i think. you'd need to have downloaded visionary from somewhere else to get version 11 or higher with the perm root. is the stock recovery working at all for you?
I don't believe it does. Updates were through different releases all the way to r14.

It goes through the motions, but when I restart the phone, it is still stuck on the "wonderful" HTC screen.
after rooting my desire hd we tried with a friend to root his, but his needed downgrade. we followed all the instructions but when it rebooted its self it stack on t-mobiles welcome screen. after pressing the down volume and power button we entered the hboot but it wont do anything. up-down vol. and power buttons wont work.
edit1: i put my sd card in his phone and hboot menu worked.(up down enter button keys worked) but when i chose factory reset it didnt reset
pls help
boot to bootloader, connect DHD with your PC and
a) flash stock rom and start over, or
b) do superuser, install CWM - CWR, do ENG S-OFF and install custom ROM
Good Luck
I've rooted and downgraded my phone from 2.3.3 to 2.2 and it boots in no problem at all however when I go into hboot the volume up and keys do not respond therefore it defaults to fastboot and trys to load the 2.2 image.
There is nothing wrong with the volume keys as I can boot into the bootloader and move up and down that list with the volume keys.
Any ideas how to go about solving this so I can try some of the roms on here.
Thanks

Your post conflicts with itself (the bold). hboot and boot loader and spl etc are the same thing. It's more likely that the trackpad is stuck (power + trackpad = straight to fastboot).
Volume Up + Power is download mode.
If you want recovery it's Bootloader -> Select Recovery.
If you're connected to the computer, and in fastboot mode you can reboot into the boot loader with
fastboot reboot-bootloader
and from there can select recovery.

Sorry meant hboot & fastboot under the bootloader. Both bring up 2 different sets of options. I can use the volume buttons on the fastboot screen but not in the hboot screen so I can't chose recovery.
In any case I installed Clockwork Mod and booted into recovery from there and tried to install the ILWT rom and it seem to install fine however when I reboot I'm stuck with the green htc splash where it is stuck. I've had to flash back to 2.2 as its the only option available to me and need the phone working. Will try again this evening. But this is the second time I've flashed that rom and both times the same result.
I'd previously got this ROM installed and had no problems however my board died so just got the phone back from HTC but having much less success this time.
The bootloader screen info at the top says:
Vision PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.85.0005
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M
eMMC-boot
Oct 11 2010,20:10:38
though that will change when I go back to stock however it was exactly the same last time I tried to load this rom so not expecting any different response this evening when I try again.

I'm not sure what version ILWT is, but if it's one of the ICS roms, and you're using clockworkmod, there is a chance that some of your partitions are ext3 types, and you may need ext4 for a number of ICS roms.
(Some even need the newer 26.13.04.19 radio).
It's a gingerbread rom. Here's details.

Any chance you can grab an adb logcat when it boots up? To least see how far it gets. And have you seen the problem with any other GB roms, like G2Lite etc?

*facepalm* Why did you do that? You would have to have only flashed the backup copy of your stock rom to get functional in the mean time rather than locking it back up with an RUU update of sort.

If you're unrooted/locked again, something to keep in mind when unlocking and rooting it again:
When you get to the point of booting into recovery (i.e.: you already rooted your shipped rom), then you can simply perform a backup first before wiping and flashing a new rom.
That way no re-locking/unrooting will be required next time you want to get back to a functional original rom for your phone (and would still technically be rooted, just with the phone's provided rom).
PS: I recommend using 4EXT Recovery (especially if you plan on using ICS roms in the future), you can either use the free app at http://www.4ext.net/ to install it, or the Recovery Control from the Play Store. That'll help make the backups a bit smaller with the tar-mode (tar's the backup so it's compressed, but isn't backward compatible to say clockworkmod).

OK. When I did the clockwork mod I did chose the option to backup before I flashed the new rom so it should be there however I didn't know how to get back into Clockwork Mod recovery in order to restore it. My problem is that when I tried to install ILWT rom I got the green htc splash screen that it was just frozen on and the only way to get rid of it was to pull the battery. When I hold volume down + power I end up at hboot which only allows me to chose the first option which basically finds PC10 something image which is my htc rom so I just installed it because as I say I didn't know how to do anything else.

When you went back to SHIP/S-ON you most likely also put the original stock recovery on there as well, you will not be able to access that back up until you unlock and re-root your phone (i.e.: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Vision ) and then boot back into recovery (button method is Power + Volume down, then volume button to select Recovery and power button to select it) to perform a restore (though I would back up your stock rom once back in recovery).
The backups are generally stored on the SD Card in the /clockworkmod/backup/ folder , typically as a dated folder under.

Ah that's back to the original problem. When I'm boot the volume up / down doesn't work therefore I can't select recovery so it autoselects the first option which loads the PC10somthing.img (which is the htc 2.2 rom which is unrooted and puts s-on) that's on the root of my sd card however the volume up and down is working the fastboot screen when I used the trackpad + power and that's been my problem. I guess if I named a stock rom PC10xsomething then it would autoselect that so I don't end up in constantly cycle of rooting and unrooting. Will see this evening.

There should be no PC10IMG.zip on the SDCard if you're already done flashing what needed flashing. Otherwise you'll keep getting stuck there.
OK - been a bit busy and had to abandon my attempts until today. Probably best thing as I discovered that I could get into clockwork mod recovery from a hung htc green logo screen by pulling the battery and then putting it in again and just hitting the power button without using the volume down button.
From there I had a backup of my rom from before which I used and a ran no problem so just spent time doing a titanium restore. So back up and running again.
I might give ICS a go if the driver issue with the camera ever gets resolved as I still use my camera, usually for document scans, quite regularly.
Thanks for taking the time in trying to get me sorted.
Did you make sure to remove PC10IMG.zip from ur sdcard???
