Sad news for Samsung Users Here!
Every new phone from samsung that is comming out now will get no longer support from Cyanogenmod mostly the devices with a Exynos chip designed by samsung. get no more support!
Samsung said on twitter that The are taking this case very seriously!
Why is Cyanogenmod stopping with support for samsung devices?
The following reasons:
- FM-radio will never work
- Exynos Chip
- On jelly bean (Vsync and tripple buffering) will never work because the graphical drivers do not support this!
But there is some GOOD NEWS All samsung devices that are Out now will get support from Cyanogenmod!
only the devices that are coming out now will get no Cyanogenmod!

Actually, they are going to drop support for Exynos-based phones, due to low-quality and/or outdated Exynos chip documentation.
If Samsung is taking this issue seriously, e.g., by releasing good documentation of Exynos, then Samsung development will pick up again.
Samsung is perhaps the vendor whose system is most dev-friendly. Besides a single model of SGS3 (for Verizon, IIRC), all their bootloaders are unlocked. And maybe Samsung is the only phone whose rooting procedure is as simple as flashing a single (or a pair of) updatezips.

+1,
Samsung is one of the most "dev-friendly". And maybe the our lack of 'Official ICS Update' is intended to challenge the devs here. (IMHO).
And the question is: Will Samsung release a (good) documentation of Exynos?

I think *perhaps* there's something covered by patents in the Exynos line, so even Samsung is not at liberty to release a full documentation...
... but that's just a guess, though.

Dear all,
I am the kernel developer from i9103. As both our machine and i927 shares v. similar hardware configurations, I could help to build a custom kernel with features like init.d support, rooting, overclock, auto brightness adjustment and etc. for i927.
As long as I could get the source codes from Samsung Opensource, then, I could help to start cooking for it.
As our i9103 still haven't get ICS official update (but, we get a leaked one), after we submit the ICS source codes request to Samsung, we get it! So, without any official ICS release, we can still get the source codes from Saumsung!
I have already submitted a request for ICS kernel source for Captivate Glide, so, maybe all of you could help to submit a request as well. Hope that the more the requests, the faster the release time.

News flash, Samsung got there buts kicked by apple and didn't win the current lawsuit they were in, Thus them losing money meaning not so much hope..
Sent From My Iced Creamd SGH-I927 Cappy Glide
They're also appealing that ruling. It seems unlikely this will mean bad news for us in the short-run. Long-term it might mean they won't give us JB officially, but from what I understand our trusty developer(s) could as soon as they have the ICS stuff. Will take time, but it is realisticaly feasible.
Also, Samsung has already put in the time to create the version we've got now with ATT. Unless the ruling covers our phone specificaly we've got nothing to fear from the law suits. And even if it does cover our Glide, legally things won't take effect for us before the final ruling. According to Google Apple's claims don't cover anything they could relatively easily work around.
So, as every hitchhiker already knows: Don't Panic

So, I was all excited to get a Note 2, but then I heard about CyanogenMod being unlikely to support new Exynos devices: http://codeworkx.de/wordpress/
So with that in mind... does anyone have a competing phablet to suggest?
Nothing going on in the stickied thread for whose gonna develop for it. Any ideas?

That seems awfully silly to drop such an anticipated world wide device. Maybe he can't meat the demand of both SG3, and Note 2?

You do know that codeworkx isn't the only developer for CyanogenMod or for Samsung devices. Him dropping support for Exynos devices isn't the end of the world. So what if he left, that's his personal choice & I understand why & completely support him but not everyone shares his views of dropping support for Exynos devices because devices like the S & Note series are very popular & its just a matter of time before some developer get his hand on the device & CyanogenMod will be developed for it. This is just needless panic.

And yes #illidan, I realise that another developer may step up, and I do hope that happens. But from the sounds of things, it's not just codeworkx that is dropping Samsung support:
Entropy512 said:
Not likely to happen. If CM comes to the Note 2, it will only be if a new maintainer steps up.
Most of the current Exynos maintainer team (myself, espenfjo, codeworkx) and others have all decided that our current devices will be our last non-Nexus Exynos devices. I'm not sure about xplodwild, but I have a feeling he's highly unlikely to take up another Haxxinos with the rest of us gone and given his prior experiences with it.
If Samsung changes their attitude towards developers, this might change, but their attitude lately (zero documentation, zero platform source code, a trend towards bootloader locking - Only the Verizon S3 has a locked bootloader now, but Samsung has had the infrastructure in place since the S2 and they are constantly adding more checks) has led to the current Exynos maintainer team deciding that enough is enough. I don't think any of us are going to do anything to make Samsung's Exynos devices more attractive to any particular market segment until they provide assistance (in the form of technical documentation and source code) in return. I don't know about the others, but if they offer me a free device I'll say no - I refuse to participate in a PR stunt like the I9100 donations were.
Pretty much the only way I'll go back is if I see reference platform source that is up to the same standards as CAF and omapzoom, or they actually start providing real documentation and source code for the devices I'm currently working with.

Yes I'm well aware of the entire so called Exynos development team giving up because of Samsung's retarded ways but as of now I believe it's a 50-50 gamble for device support. Maybe a new maintainer steps up to the batting plate or an old one does (highly unlikely). It's basically up to you & seeing as the Note is the only choice for now if your looking for a phablet. I still believe that the device will receive support.

A popular device like the Note II will surely get CM. But a point worth considering is the lack of help being provided by Samsung regarding the Exynos processor. So, in the future , development may slow down or there may be loss of particular functionality due to the lack of code or compatible blobs from Samsung for the Exynos.
Of course, there are many talented devs that gonna work on the Note II, but the Team Hacksung not supporting this is definitely a big blow, as they have shown the awesome work they can do with Samsung devices as well as the fact that they have tremendous experience on Samsung devices.
Hrm, this may not be concerning for the veteran android user, but as I plan(ned?) this to be my first android device, it makes me wonder if I should wait and see if there is support for it. I can't a stock anything, let a lone a phone. And unfortunatly this is the only android device I'm really looking forward to.
I've heard some chit chatter as well, as far as development / support not going to be strong but its not going to sway me from buying this phone.. It's still going to be awesome.. Even if its just stock rooted to get rid of system things you don't need

Re the price: 200€ off-contract, yes.
I've been watching this phone since last year and the best offers I found were 250€ at the end of November 2012, 230€ now in most of the shops. A local supermarket is going to sell it for 200€ in the next days.
So the price doesn't go down fast, but slowly it does!

Many of those ROMs were not pure AOSP/CM-based and just stock, with some mods/changes, so maybe you may expect 'bloatwares', including that useless apps etc. Well there is actually CM10.1 but it is not that reliable since mostly it is for hi-level devs (as you can see there are many bugs there including the Phone.apk (that is for the calls) so it is impossible to make calls), the BT, the Wi-Fi if I'm not mistaken. But well if you can stand that it's yours.
Also, I think the newest S4 will fit. Well its announcement is still on March 14th (15th GMT+7, if it is announced at evening in NY). And I don't think if the price would be another 200 Euros off-contract.
Again, it is your privilege to buy a new phone and leave the other. So, choose it wisely.

with the JB update, the phone is really smooth even without any custom rom or tweak.
But the only big problem is there is not much special tweaks and custom rom available for S advance. So when you are bored of stock S advance, there's nothing you can do unlike our lovely W with so many awesome devs.
Both phones have their own pros and cons. It's up to you.

Surely Wonder has a lot more mods, roms, etc. available.
However, I also had a chance to try the S Advance and I must say it's much more comfortable just for the slightly bigger screen. The keyboard is easier, and the GPS works perfectly in Advance whereas in my Wonder takes ages to get the fix or loses it every minute....
All in all, if I had to buy a new phone, between the 2 I'd go for the Advance I think.

How does HTC compare to Samsung?
Is *everything* HTC produces available to devs? Or does HTC refuse to release proprietary source code like Samsung does?
Will 'unofficial' builds be able to be rated as stable?

HTC does release source and stable builds of aosp are typically achieved. The main thing you have to worry about is when HTC decides end of update lifecycle. That's when stable releases for aosp base becomes really slow.
Since there's a gpe version, I'm hoping the update lifecycle will be longer than previous HTC phones.
I owned an Evo 3d and one xl previously.

Thanks @exad
How quickly does that happen?
What sort of update life cycle can the M8 expect?

Hmmm a year and a halfish? As for what we can expect for the m8.. I am without a crystal ball.

Lol....I wasn't expecting an exact answer, just wondered if HTC had a policy of updating for a specified set duration irrespective of model.....

They're committed to two years on major Android updates for North American phones.

That's not so bad.......
The average phone contract here in the UK is 2 years........
By the time my current contract is up and I get the M8, the end of my new 2 year contract will put me about 6 months past that 2 year update life cycle........
I can live with that.......

How does HTC compare to Samsung?
Is *everything* HTC produces available to devs? Or does HTC refuse to release proprietary source code like Samsung does?
Will 'unofficial' builds be able to be rated as stable?

well it IS proprietary...meaning it isn't open source so they don't have to release it.
and yes, they refuse to release sources for Sense and many of their Sense applications.

THAT I can understand.....it'll be the same for any manufacturer.......
But then Sense, Touchwiz and the like isn't strictly needed for AOSP.
What I was asking about (and probably should have been clearer about) was device source code......
Case in point......
Samsung and Exynos.......source code needed to make the device function correctly irrespective of what is running on it.....

I understood what you meant and answered you. They do for all versions until support for the device ends

HTC refuses to release proprietary code. This has always been a problem with HTC and will likely continue to be one. Don't believe me ask kernel developer @flar2. The first source code they released not too long had a fair amount of code lopped off of it. The only truly open source is AOSP. Even the Nexus line diverges a bit from true open source as they have closed source certain apps like google calendar, maps and keyboard. But these can at least be downloaded from play store.
So is HTC still perceived as the least (or so I have read) 'dev friendly' manufacturer?

There definitely up there, I think Samsung especially the exynos version is worse. At the least we have access to Code Aurora (Qualcomm source code) and they are very good about releasing source.

EDIT: Sorry @jlevy73 - I quoted the wrong person.
They all have things that include IP that is closed, including Google Nexus, which is also different from AOSP.
Some of the things aren't even HTC related, there are proprietary drivers & such that they themselves license from Qualcomm, & other component manufacturers. I would say that they are much more developer friendly than most of the OEM's.
Well, none of that is going to affect my decision to get the M8.......
I just want to be able to proceed with all the relevant information......
So long as I can.....
A) root it
B) install some root access apps
C) debloat (if necessary)
D) *maybe* flash a custom rom
(In that order, with D being a possibility rather than a certainty)
