I'm looking for a dock that can charge or sync when needed to. HDMI dock doesn't have headphone jack so that a drawback.
Which dock would u recommend and what are the pro and con of each??

The HDMI dock is used for connecting your phone to an HDMI display. It connects to your phone via the micro-usb port.
The pogo dock is used for sending just audio out of your device to another. It connects to your phone via the pogo pins on the side of your phone, so it's far easier to just slide your phone quickly in to the dock to charge.
Both docks are capable of charging.
Neither are capable of passing the USB data signal through to the phone.
Im looking for a dock that can charge and has the headphone jack so I can plug it in to a home theatre. Which one would that be??

I just received notification that my pre-ordered speaker dock has been shipped out. Hopefully I'll get it tomorrow to play with on the weekend.
I plan to put the speaker dock in the kitchen to use as a clock radio-esque type device (with the ability to do other fun Xoom stuff).
After reading a little bit more about the speaker dock I noticed that it has an HDMI out port. Form the picture on the Moto website it looks like a standard HDMI port and not the mini one that's one the actual xoom.
What I'm curious about though is whether the standard dock also has this port. I'm OK shelling out another $50 for another dock I can put near my TV. I don't quite understand why only the speaker version would have one (but I guess if you want to connect it to a monitor with HDMI in) but connecting it to the TV/Receiver you typically already have a better sound system so having HDMI out on the standard dock at least makes sense.
tldr; Does the Xoom speaker dock come with a standard sized HDMI out port? Does anyone know if the Xoom standard dock comes with an HDMI out port?
The HD speaker dock has a micro HDMI on the back. Its the same connection that the xoom itself has. The regular charging dock does not have a HDMI plug at all. The stupid part is that the sound is routes through HDMI when plugged into a monitor or TV. I have a monitor without built in speakers so no sound plays when I plug it in. I have to plug a 3.5mm headphone adapter into my speakers to get sound.

Motorola said that there is no sound through HDMI on the xoom, but only on the speaker dock.
Sad seeing them do a last second money grab on their product

There is. I connected my Xoom to my monitor, and all the sound went through my monitors speakers.
interesting, I must of been misinformed.
Well that's a plus, can't wait for my micro hdmi to come in

That's how HDMI works, it transfers HD video and sound on the one cable.
How much does an HDMI cable cost?
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
Depends on a lot of things, where you buy, how long, etc.
If you go to your local Best Buy you will spend $30+ for a short cable.
I have purchased them from monoprice.com for $7 for a 15' cable. Works great.
I've just watched this video...
http://youtube/fCBFdNMhCCw
If you look at the charging cable for it, it has a 3.5mm headphone jack (so that it can be plugged into the aux in on a stereo)
Is there any way to buy just this cable so we can have audio over usb? Or even a way to hack one together DIY style?
Thanks.

Have you tried plugging usb in from the charging cable to see if you can put into mass storage mode and read files like a thumb drive? I would check that first.
That would probably work but I just have never seen a cable with the 3.5mm jack built in. I don't have my atrix yet, just doing some research into different things.
Should have it by late next week

Yeah, just so there's one cable coming down for charging and audio aux. Unfortunately, I don't see a way for a stereo or processor to read the phone properly until Harman's Google Open Protocol project gets into the market.
I have the dock/cable
One cable goes into the dock which the usb on the phone plugs into.
The HP jack comes out of the other end to connect to the AUX input in the car.
There are two labels on the cable, one says not to plug directly into the phone on the mini usb end and the other says not to plug into a PC (both in pictures)
I have the car dock and the usb cable supplied with the 3.5 mm does not work as a sync cable.

It's a dock dependent cable. Great question and perhaps abthird party will step up and manufacture a micro USB charging/ audio combo cable that can be used without seperate dock. Alternatively, contact your local rocket scientist. Lol! Actually, the multimedia dock does exactly the same thing, presenting an audio out jack.

But in the multimedia dock, I would assume that audio is coming through HDMI. This dock is much different than laptop dock and multimedia dock just because it conencts with phone only over USB but still gives an audio plug at the other end.
Also, I would assume that audio streaming is built into the cable and not in the dock because cable connecting to the dock is just a USB connector.
Now if audio is flowing through USB cable, the only question is if it can be played without using accompanied 3.5 mm audio jack?
To get to bottom of this question, it would require some USB debugging expertise which I dont have. Can anyone check with devs in forum?
There is no way audio is coming through HDMI because there is no HDMI port.
The car dock does something with the atrix where the atrix turns the USB port into analogue audio out/power. It's pretty much replacing data with audio out.
It specifically says on the cable to not plug into a computer, because the wires do not go where they are normally supposed to go (since it splits)

I have no reason to believe that the multimedia dock (not to be confused with the HD dock) and the car dock are any different in how the micro USB connector interacts with the phone. One thing that we do know is that the micro USB connector on the car dock is expecting a special cable. It literally states not to connect the car dock wire directly to the phone. Anyway, the bottom line is why does it matter, the key is that Moto engineered a product that will charge and output audio using a single connector. The car dock wire has the 3.5 mm audio out. The multimedia dock has the 3.5 mm audio out on the back... All appears to be the same to me. One thing worth noting is that the multimedia dock will not interface with a PC. I read a post that described the connection type, but can't remember what it was.
Im not sure how the he dock works, but the webtop hack has sound. If the he dock is just webtop/hd sharing, then yes, its hdmi. Charging via the usb port. But I don't own those docks, only the car dock, so im not sure.

The HDMI port is for video with audio only and used for the HD dock, lap dock and webtop hack. The micro USB port is used by the HD dock and lapdock to provide USB hub like functionality to the dock as well as a mechanism for charging the phone. This USB hub like functionality is the basis for the lapdock keyboard/track pad and HD dock wired USB keyboard and mouse. A Bluetooth keyboard/mouse can be substituted I believe, connecting via the phone's built in Bluetooth. The multimedia dock and car dock do not provide computer USB type connection capabilities, and NO video capabilites, as the HDMI connection is abscent. Instead they will charge the phone AND provide connectivity for analog audio out and that is it. The webtop hack is just a way of activating HDMIfeatures that are normally only triggered in the HD dock or lapdock.
Yes... I knew all of that... just too lazy to type that...
so... that doesn't really lead us anywhere?
I don't think you can use the vehicle dock cable with the phone directly unless someone reverse engineers the car dock.

I plan to fit a desktop cradle in my car and I'd like to wire the Xperia audio output to my car stereo. Is it possible to use the micro-usb connector for both power and audio output? I've found a few threads on the Samsung forum showing how to do this on a Galaxy. Is the wiring the same on the Xperia and would I need to use the resistor trick to get the audio via the micro-usb connector? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321491
AFAIK if your car stereo reads USB then plug in and mount sdcard that way you can view file on the stereo itself and it will be charging, if not then use AUX lead with micro USB

I'll also be interested in so... and wayne, is not the same, for example, I listened music via spotify, so I cannot listened to it if only connecting through usb mounted sd card...
Otherwise, anyone know how to enable dock mode or car mode connecting in the arc?
you'll need to use the headphone output. or bluetooth.
Unfortunately my car doesn't have a USB connection. I wanted to use the car stereo's aux audio input. So can any one confirm that the Xperia definitely can't output audio via the micro usb?
Is your car aux connection a USB? Or is it a 3.5mm connection like my car? If so you can get a 3.5mm male to male lead from Ebay

Yes it is 3.5mm but I don't want to use the 3.5mm socket. I want to be able to drop it into a desktop dock and connect both audio and power via the micro-usb. The dock will be sitting in a recessed part of the dash and there isn't room to drop the phone in to the dock with a 3.5 mm plug attached (even a right angled one).

Sorry confused, If you can't fit a 3.5mm plug, how can you find room to fit usb connector on phone which is on opposite right hand side to the 3.5mm connection?

you need one of these. CLICK
and one of these...CLICK
Then you can transmit via bluetooth to your 3.5mm aux input.

Thanks good find
So I just bought the GSM galaxy nexus from the play store (waiting to be shipped). I am seeing all of these car dock issues not having the POGO ect. My Epic 4G touch car dock uses the USB for music and charging (AUX and chargers plugs in back). Does anyone know if the usb with these types of docks will plug into other phones like this one and still get sound and power from the Dock? If so it might be worth looking into a mod? Just curious if this has already been discussed?
im sure it would work just fine if you managed to mod it precisely. personally i felt like the dock caused some wear on the usb port which is y i loved the idea of the pogo pins.
So I am planning on getting the Infuse dock for my S3. I want to hard-wire it in my truck so it is a clean install and wires are not everywhere. My options that I see right now are to splice in a cig lighter socket to the current one or the head unit power and then just plug in the car charger to that and run the wire behind the dash up to the mount.
I am assuming the power adapter that gets plugged into the cig lighter steps the power down from the 12v+ to the 3 or 4v to charge the phone correct? Or is this built into the part of the actual dock/mount that slides into the phone? If this is built into the dock/mount I could just run a wire straight down to the fuse panel and wire it in there without having to use a cig socket and adapter.
And another quick question....if I got a new head unit with a rear USB port I could just run a longer USB cable from the dock behind the dash to the rear input. Assuming this provides power, I could charge, use MTP, and stream pandora correct? Would this also replace Bluetooth hands free calling? I guess it would just be simple to pop the phone in the dock and have all those features and not have to worry about turning Bluetooth on and off and pairing. Plus I would assume audio quality would be better via a wired connection rather than Bluetooth.
Anyone?

The dock needs a micro usb connection, which is 5 volts. You have lots of options, from just plugging a micro usb car charger into the dock and lighter socket, to opening up that car charger and wiring direct to fuse box, to wiring a new lighter socket under the dash to the fuse box then getting the little adapter that looks like a rocket that plugs into a lighter socket and gives you a usb port. Combine that with a micro usb cable and poof. I did this last setup and it works great...
