Being on boost, rooting shouldn't be an issue. It has been said by boost posters that reprogramming isn't required. There used to be a guide but I can't locate it now. May have been removed.

Rooting a boost device is no different than a sprint device. Here is my Febby approved guide to rooting ICS based ROMs on sprint or boost manually.
Step 1: download and install the samsung drivers if you don't have them installed, and reboot PC to ensure proper installation.
Drivers Download: http://rwilco12.androidfilehost.com...Files/Samsung_E4GT_USB_Driver_v1_3_2360_0.exe
Step 2: Download a custom kernel such as agats to your PC. I'll link Agat kernel thread below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767421
Step 3: If you don't have odin, download odin zip and extract. Link below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1418814&d=1350807034
Step 4: Download superSU zip, and transfer it to your phones sdcard or internal. Links below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
Step 5: load up odin, press the pda slot to select the custom kernel you downloaded.
Step 6: Put your phone into download mode. To do this remove the battery, put the battery back in, press and hold the power button + Vol down button, and Lastly press Vol up to confirm download mode.
Step 7: connect your phone to your pc with a usb cable, confirm that you are connected to odin by looking under "ID:COM", It should say com5 or such. Press start to flash the kernel. Phone will reboot.
Step 8: Boot phone into recovery mode by powering off the phone. Once phone is off, press and hold the power button + vol up, till the sgs2 screen pops up (let go of the buttons). Once in recovery, flash the superSU or superuser zip by pressing "Install zip from sdcard", then press "Choose zip from sdcard" or "Choose zip from internal/external" depending where you placed the file. Reboot phone after flashing zip.
Step 9: Phone is now rooted!
Step 10: If you want the stock kernel back, just download the stock kernel for your stock ROM and reflash it via Odin.
step 11: Thank my post (Febby is my name!), share post for rooting, and enjoy life.

Hey BluesRulez, thanks for the reply, so I assume it doesnt matter what carrier I have.
I can't see the JB instructions, do I need to go back to GB because I am running ICS already, is this what the process should be:
I see this:
-Make sure you have the ROM zip file already on your SD Card before starting this.
-Download Mobile Odin Lite from here. You can also download from play store.
-Download GB - EL26 Stock repacked with CWM from here. You want the .tar.md5 file.
-Open Mobile Odin and select the kernel slot. Find the file on your sd card and select it.
-Flash firmware. It will take few seconds and phone will reboot.
-Next step is very important..
-Now one thing to keep in mind here is that you just flashed a Gingerbread based kernel. If you are on ICS or JB, your phone will no longer boot. So you want to hold down power + vol up until you see the CWM recovery.
-From here on follow the instructions of the rom you are trying to install.
Then go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1903252 and flash any of these EL26 - Rooted or EL13 - Rooted (which one?)
and with the JB ROM that I already have on there flash it and gapps?
Am I missing something? I just had a really bad experience with bootloaders for the infuse, that's why I am asking.

Flash any rom using those steps. GB based EL 26 kernel with CWM is the safest recovery.
You are not doing anything from here [STOCK ROMS][CWM][ODIN] Stock ROM Repository - Find/Download Them All Here. That is for FULL roms. You ONLY need the kernel with CWM to flash JB which is linked in step 3.

Ok I will do that tonight. it just seemed odd that I ll be flashing JB roms with the GB based EL 26 Kernel with CWM, when the instructions say now your on GB and ICS and JB won't boot. But then I should just be able to get into CWM and flash the JB and it should install a JB kernel and work, right?!

Yes. Your current ROM will not boot anymore after flashing the EL26 kernel but obviously after you flash a new rom it flashes its own kernel and phone will boot.

Thank you again BluesRulez and Febby for helping me out. Is there anything else I need to look out for? Backing up EFS, IMEI or something like that?
I ll report back with sad QQs or happy QQs once I get JB on the E4GT. Yay, I am stoked. :victory:

[Q] Forced eL30 update Can i still root?

So my FF cam wasnt working along with a few other things on my phone so i took it to sprint and paid 30$ some odd dollars to fix.... When i get my phone back i realized they upgraded my software.... [email protected]#K.
I am now on GB EL30 2.3.6 and am searching for a root method... So far i have read that there is no solid root for this version yet and may not be for some time??
Here is where i need help... Am i wrong here? Is there a root for 2.3.6 GB out there?
Does the Gingerbreak work for this version... I have a feeling that it wont.... Can anyone confirm?
IF there is no way to root this version, will i be able to go back to an older version and root my phone ? like 2.3.whatever?
Thanks for the Help guys!!
Gingerbreak doesn't work....You have to odin in a recovery to flash su and it won't stick afterwards so make sure you have a su.zip flash the recovery make sure auto reboot isn't checked and 3 finger salute and flash su and reboot you'll be stock with su permissions.. I do think some kernels will actually work on it though I've read tw.bml samurai kernel works fine.

Let me know if im getting this right,
Step 1. Get my phone connected to odin (uncheck auto reboot)
2. Flash a recovery (do you know where i can get one)
3. boot pressing power volume up and camera button and Flash su.zip?
I have a feeling im doing something wrong here please let me know, and THANKS for the help!!!

That is correct, for a recovery look for cwm5 in the development stickies, make sure its a .tar file extension and not a .zip

Okay wait let me update there is now a custom el30 kernel so do this.
Make sure you have the custom kernel .zip before going step by step sorry wrote this up in a hurry.
1. Get your su.zip and your recovery.tar(which ever recovery) and get odin to recognise and so forth.
2. Odin in the recovery.tar and make sure auto reboot isn't checked.
3. Hold power button, camera button, and volume down to boot into recovery and Flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1460540 scroll to find the .zip link. Once this is flashed flash su.zip
4. Boot up and you'll be rooted with with a custom recovery

I cant get Odin to work on the computers at work, im assuming they don’t let users have the privileges that it takes to run this program and complete this operation so I will have to wait till im home to use Odin but I will report back later.
Yes this will be stock rooted... and there isn't an exploit for our stock kernels anymore samsung got smart I guess.... root calls for a modded kernel now anyways yes this will be just what you need for tethering

Thanks again guys, been very helpfull.
Here's the steps I used, but, I understand that toadlife now has a clean Kernel EL30 that takes the place of deleting the recovery script (that overwrites your CWM on reboot):
1. Attach phone to PC and mount...then copy the su zip file to the root of your SD card. Then unmount and unhook phone from pc.
2. Open Odin and uncheck everything. Put the CWM5.2.0.7 tar under PDA
3. Power off phone and then hold the Keyboard "1" key and Power at same time until phone gets the yellow triangle and says "Download Mode"
4. Attach the usb cable to PC and wait for a Yellow box to illuminate on Odin.
5. Now hit start and wait until it turns green and says "Pass"and the script has stopped running (the last line is something like 1 Pass 0 fail)
6. Unplug phone and remove battery (to get out of download mode without booting)
7. Now reinsert battery and 3 finger salute to CWM...from there, choose and install the su zip (now you are rooted).
8. Reboot and use your Root Explorer or other root explorer to go to system/etc and find the installer-recovery.sh file and delete it (you have to click Mount in Root Explorer to allow it to delete a system file).
9. Now power off and go back to download mode again and go into Odin with the CWM tar again, but make sure you check Autoreboot this time.
10. Now reinstall CWM with Odin like you did above.
If you use the kernel flash we mentioned above you can save yourself steps 8-10.

[GUIDE] ROOT and UNROOT Stock GB 2.3.5, 2.3.6 ICS 4.0.3, and 4.0.4 T-mobile Telus S2X

I am not responsible for your device
This is only for the t-mobile t989 galaxy s2 hercules
do not use any other galaxy s2 models because it will brick your device
you can flash skyrocket ROMs and kernels with CWM, but I suggest you research more before attempting anything.
HOW TO ROOT
FOR 2.3.5 ONLY
you can use the Superoneclick to gain root access.
To flash ROMS and Kernels
Please refer to AllGamer's thread oh how to obtain Clockworkmod Recovery if you want to flash ROMs
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332103
But basically...
After getting root access
1. download ROM manager from the market
2. select Flash Clockworkmod recovery
FOR 2.3.5, 2.3.6, 4.0.3, and 4.0.4
What you need:
SAMSUNG USB Drivers OR Mirror
ODIN
RECOVERY
SUPERUSER WITH BUSYBOX
Instructions
USB debugging should be on.
1. Install the Samsung Drivers and ODIN
2. Plug in your phone to the PC allow everything to be installed. Do not interrupt until everything is finished installing. It should be like 5 things
3. Unplug your phone and power off your device.
4. Go into ODIN/DOWNLOAD mode
With the device off. Hold the + and - Volume buttons (telus only -) and stick the data cable into your phone. Hit Vol + to confirm into DOWNLOAD MODE
5. Launch ODIN (Your device should be detected under COM)
6. select PDA and select your choice of Recovery
7. Click Start.
It should be a quick flash. no more than 5 minutes.
Troubleshoot
If it is stuck in initializing, please close ODIN, try another USB port, and reopen ODIN
You now have ClockWorkMod Recovery
To enter this, make sure you're not connected to the computer.
Power off the phone and hold Vol + and - and Power. Let go of Power once it vibrates until you're in recovery.
You can now Flash any ROMS that will give you ROOT access, but if you want to stay stock...
To gain Root, 2.3.5, 2.3.6, 4.0.3, and 4.0.4
1. Launch CWM Recovery
2. Select Install zip from sdcard
UPDATE: there has been reports that 3.1.3 doesn't play nice with GB 2.3.5/6 so flash 3.0.7 that i have attached.
3. choose CWM_Root_Superuser_3.1.3_Busybox_1.20.2.zip
or
3. choose a custom ROM of your choice in the android development section.
You now have Superuser Root Access
Troubleshoot when flashing superuser
If it aborts or gives you some error (usually for 2.3.6)
Don't worry, just flash a couple more times until it is successful OR you can reboot the phone and check your app drawer for the SUPERUSER app.
If Superuser does not flash no matter what.. I suggest just flashing a rooted and deodexed stock ROM or one of the many Custom ROMS by our great debs
ODIN back to STOCK ROM/Unrooting
This is completely factory stock ROM, Stock kernels and stock recovery.
refer to ALLGamer's thread
Stock ROMS
KID KJ3 2.3.5 and KL1 2.3.6 ROMS can be found at the bottom of the OP
for LDE go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668502
FLASH it via ODIN as you would the RECOVERY. (PDA)
RESTORE TO STOCK 4.0.3 and 4.0.4
4.0.3 and 4.0.4 guide to restore to stock via odin and CWM/TWRP
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1858435
this is a compilations of many guides that is referred to. Please thank them if this helped.
let me know if I need to correct anything or if there are anymore troubleshooting I can add.
If you hold vol +, - and the power button without letting go, your phone will keep vibrating and rebooting... And you wont get into recovery.
What you are really supposed to do is hold vol + & - without letting go, then press and hold the power button for aprox 2 seconds untill the phone vibrates. Then RELEASE the power button while holding vol + & - to enter recovery.
You may want to update your op.

The linked superuser file is for Android 1.6, which is why titanium backup doesn't work. I ended up using the SU 3.0.5 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194 and root worked.

2. is it necessary to reboot, flash SU and then go into recovery to flash a rom?
3. also which rom would you guys recommend? least buggy/glitchy and best performance?

CWM doesn't increase the flash counter from what I remember, mine is still 0, but probably if you flash a stock rom then it will go up by 1. not sure.

1. after i flash recovery through odin instructions say i can flash ANY rom correct?
or is it just certain roms?
2. is it necessary to reboot, flash SU and then go into recovery to flash a rom?
3. also which rom would you guys recommend? least buggy/glitchy and best performance?

1. you can FLASH ANY T989 or i727 roms AKA hercules and skyrocket, aka t-mobile/telus gs2 and att skyrocket
2. if you're planning to flash a rom, you don't need to flash SU, just flash CWM and then flash ROM in CWM recovery
3. It's all user preference, Comparing roms is shunned upon because it demoralizes other devs by making their ROMs feel inferior, but I can say that off that bat most flash Juggernaut because of the views and replies. It's a great ROM
Darkside is probably the best stock looking ROM which I am using
Tuesday ROM has a Purple theme and also a great rom
Eugene ROM is also cool check it out
There are other ROMs i didn't get to use but from what I hear they're all DD worthy
Oh Oh
OK so did all of the instructions as indicated and i can get into CWM but when i do it keeps blinking and i can scroll up and down but when i select install.zip it does nothing. and yes i reflashed 5 times... any ideas?

unroot
will this method of unroot remove the superuser icon from the app drawer i have to do a warranty exchange
Works perfectly
Just wanted to let others know this method is flawless and I have rooted and flashed 2 T989 phones purchased during Valentine's day sale with 2.3.6 installed.
Thanks again for the easy to follow instructions.

The unroot brings it completely back to stock. They're original Samsung factory stock roms, recovery, modem, and kernel.

[Q] Help installed battery mod and loop?

Please bring me back. I installed CM9 pre5 but forgot to update kernel to get CMW with 3 fingers and now I installed battery mod beta4 and phone justs loops.
I made a backup when I updated before installing battery mod but I don't know how to get phone back into clockwork mod since i didn't install kernel for it after CM9 update.
I need instructions to get phone back up please save me.
Thanks for your fast input...
The Cm9 update includes the kernel. Just three finger boot into recovery.
Sent from my SPH-D700 CM9 ANDROID 4.0.4
Great but what if?
wow that was fast and accurate, many Thank You Zeinzu. I did not know it had CWM on CM9 thinking you had to flash kernels like nyan 5 or shadow cm9 6.3.3 to get it to work.
If by any chance that 3 finger didn't work I would need to use odin to:
via ODIN
1.To begin, download the CWM 5.0.2.7 tar file from the link above.
2.Run ODIN and make sure Re-Partition is unchecked.
3.Click PDA and choose the recovery you downloaded.
4.Boot your phone into Download Mode. (Power it off and holding down the 1 key on the keyboard, press the Power button.)
5.Connect the device to your PC and once you see it connected in ODIN, hit the Start button to begin the flashing process.
6.Once the recovery is flashed, the phone will reboot
does F.Reset Time checkboxes need to be selected?
or
odin back to OFFICIAL SPH-D700-FC09-8Gb-REL.tar then I need to root it again? lost here never had to go back so just wanted to know from the Pro's...
Thanks m8 =)

Nooooo!!! Once on mtd (cm9 is mtd) do not flash another recovery.... there Is no flashable or .tar for cwm for mtd roms.. cm9 installed the recovery you should stick with (there is a touch recovery, but its buggy imo)
If you cantget to the recovery you will need the fc09 with victory.pit wth repartition an auto reboot checked...
Cool

Thank You Flashnoles you also saved me from bricking my phone.
I got confused into thinking I needed to install extra kernals on CM9 to get CMW but I followed Zeinzu advice and was saved. I was just about to odin a CMW.tar when I had my doubts and decided to ask the kind m8's of XDA.
Does CM9 stock kernal have the 3 Button Reboot or you only get that with Nyan Colonel v5 or ShadowKernel CM9 v0.6.3.3 because I try to do a fast reboot but keep getting volume going up or down?
I noticed when I installed the Nyan Colonel v5 it installed TeamWin Recovery Project (twrp) instead of CMW but I reverted back using restore-cwm.zip. Is this the "touch recovery" you were reffering to because I also found it buggy and was not confident using it for Recovery and tools?
So If a new CMW version pops up the only way to get it is to odin back to stock BML to install it then use Restore in CMW to get back to your saved Rom?
Could I use epic4g-fc09-sdcard-utility-v3.tar to temp bypass MTD and install CMW updates?
Thank You again both for your advice and great responses...

MTD uses a completely different recovery. The recovery is overwritten whenever you flash a rom or kernel. When thee is a new recovery, you will automatically get it when you update cm9.

Check out this informative post by Febby.. :good: (Yes, this is for Sprint. Febby was informing a Boost user in this post)

Rooting a boost device is no different than a sprint device. Here is my Febby approved guide to rooting ICS based ROMs on sprint or boost manually.
Step 1: Download a custom kernel such as agats to your PC. I'll link Agat kernel thread below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767421
Step 2: If you don't have odin, download odin zip and extract. Link below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1418814&d=1350807034
Step 3: Download superSU zip, and transfer it to your phones sdcard or internal. Links below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
Step 4: load up odin, press the pda slot to select the custom kernel you downloaded.
Step 5: Put your phone into download mode. To do this remove the battery, put the battery back in, press and hold the power button + Vol down button, and Lastly press Vol up to confirm download mode.
Step 6: connect your phone to your pc with a usb cable, confirm that you are connected to odin by looking under "ID:COM", It should say com5 or such. Press start to flash the kernel. Phone will reboot.
Step 7: Boot phone into recovery mode by powering off the phone.
Step 8: Phone is now rooted!
Step 9: If you want the stock kernel back, just download the stock kernel for your stock ROM and reflash it via Odin.
step 10: Thank my post (Febby is my name!) and enjoy live.
Credit list:
Thanks to ChainFire for SuperSU!
Thanks to the makers of Odin!
Thanks to Agat63 for making a custom kernel.
Thanks to this amazing community for any other work and support.
Thanks to me aka Febby, for writing this small guide.

I believe the odin methods have a Data restore and a No Data restore version. If you are just worried about apps there are programs like android commander that will backup all her apps no data so that you can restore them later. Its a pc based program
Edit: or do above...lol
thanks everyone...i appreciate it!!!

Best way to PRL update (non-stock ROM)

I am running LineageOS and need update PRL. Is there an easier way to PRL update than using ODIN with Stock ROM? Is there another ROM that I can flash with TWRP, update PRL then restore LOS?
Also looking for best way to update modem/radio. What is latest modem?

Odin it the only way to do modem. But if you're on nj2, you have the latest.
As for prl and profile, there are stock TWRP flashable ROMs. There is an nd8 and nj2 stock rooted TWRP flashable ROMs. But if you're coming from anything higher than lollipop (you said lineage so your on nougat) you have to wipe internal storage to get a stock ROM to boot. Stock ROMs for this phone are KitKat, and to go back to KitKat you have to wipe everything, especially internal storage.
I don't think anyone has extracted the modems from anything newer than nd8, so flashing the newest full firmware you can find (Odin of course) 8s the only way to get newer modem. But I don't think the modem has changed much after nj2 so not much point.
nd8 stock rooted ROM
You could also flash wicked x, I don't have the link right now. It's in the S3 android development section.

All of these files are available here on XDA, I'll let you hunt them down, but here are the steps. Make sure and Right-click all files and "run as administrator".
You need a Windows 10 computer
DO NOT CONNECT PHONE TO PC UNTIL STEP 4
1. SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe install on Windows PC
2. Boot phone into download mode:
a. Volume Down, Home and Power button until the "Warning!!" message
b. Volume Up to "continue"
c. Phone should display green Android and "Downloading"
3. Double click file: S3 OneClick SPH-L710_ND8_Full Restore_UNROOTED.exe
4. Connect phone to PC via USB
5. Click Start until process complete. Do not disconnect, shut down, or anything until process is done.
1-5 WILL TAKE YOU BACK TO STOCK
Boot you phone, update your profile and PRL.
Now you are ready to go back. Now install TWRP and ROM of your choice.
6. Boot phone into download mode:
a. Volume Down, Home and Power button until the "Warning!!" message
b. Volume Up to "continue"
c. Phone should display green Android and "Downloading"
7. Find and Run Odin3v3.04.exe (or a close version)
8. Connect phone to PC via USB
a. Odin: Check COM on left is blue and "Added!!" is Message
9. Click PDA
10. Find and select twrp-3.0.2-0-d2spr.img.tar
11. Verify that PDA, Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time have a check in the box, and that they are the only things checked
12. Click Start
a. Device auto-reboot and green "PASS!" when done and "Added!!" in Message Box.
13. Power off phone and boot into Recovery mode:
a. Volume Up, Home, Power button and release on boot
13a No power button procedure:
1. Unplug phone from power, remove then replace battery.
2. Push and hold Volume-Down button and the Home buttons simultaneously, THEN plug in USB power.
3. Phone should power on to Download Mode.
5. Press Volume Down to reboot and *IMMEDIATELY* push and hold Volume-Up and Home simultaneously.
5. Phone should now be in recovery/TWRP.
THIS SHOULD BE PLENTY TO GET YOU THERE AND BACK!
Good luck.
