Disclaimer: I've been searching on the Q&A section for a similar question and in the general section and I haven't been able to find a relevant answer.
So I was recently running CNA latest version 3.6.6 but a few things were not working so after about a month I came back to my stock backup and of course got the OTA notification, if you haven't figured out yet what I would like to know is what kind of update is this. Will it update the system partition completely, data and cache or just a small update to a partition specifically?
I would like to know if the update will go through without issues even though I am rooted, using Franco kernel and custom recovery and if will need my /data partition.
Thanks in advance

I recently rooted and installed the arhd Rom and I love it. The Rom has just been updated and I am looking for some answers with regards to flashing this update.
I know the procedure is straight forward, however is there a way I can do it without losing my downloaded apps, data and the way I have configured my screens ?
I used an app to backup my stuff before but it did not store the data. Any help is appreciated.

If you are already running ARHD 6.1.x, you can flash the newest update on top of your current setup without any changes or losing data. No need to superwipe or anything. It's all based on the same base, the changes have been minor bug fixes or app updates here and there.
And just so we are clear, boot into cwm/EXT4 recovery and flash the updated ROM zip. Always a good idea to manually wipe cache and dalvik cache but it's all really straight forward.

I've moved my VZWGnex, like the rest of the herd, to JB and flashed a few kernels for fun. Personally, I had no issues at all. Now, about 24 hrs in, I'm kinda missing all of the customization of Liquid 1.5 (ICS).
Since there are so many threads that have been peppered with issues involving Nandroid/CWM/Alt Recoveries/TBU, I thought I'd start a thread to centralize the experiences.
The central question of the thread is...
Which are the reliable methods for moving from JB to ICS on the Gnex?
Obviously, there will be variations on the theme, based on individual history and preferences, but I've not seen the answer to this question clearly defined in any way other than via fastboot. That may be the only way, but I'm tempted to believe that a nandroid backup can work. Did it work for you?
I have TeamWin Recovery. I simply back up (nandroid) the ICS and then install JB. To go back, I simply restore the backup.

And you're already done this, right? This isn't just theory.
To which ICS rom did you restore? And from which JB rom?

I have cwm. Flashed bigxies (check spelling) jb rom last night and flashed back my backup of rascream/trinity combo a little bit ago
Did not wipe just flashed backup.

In an effort to bolster others' confidence, maybe those of you who have restored ICS roms from nandroid backups could give some extra details, like:
Your daily driver that you backed up before going to JB.
Your preferred recovery.
Your version of JB.
The exact steps you took to restore the nandroid backup.
(Ex: All I did was restore my backup in CWM. Did not wipe.)

Update:
Came from Liquid 1.5 and CWM 5.5.0.4 (it's not the touch version)
Flashed the Vicious JBv2 without issue. Tried several kernels - stock, stock linaro, Franco, etc.
Without wiping, flashed the Liquid 1.5 nandroid in CWM.
NO ERRORS

<just asking>
so you can apparently restore to 4.0.4 cwm backup from 4.1 directly without any issues. is that right? and just a question. can i, after restoring to 4.0.4, restore back 4.1 again? that is without flashing the bigxie's jb rom , simply by restoring cwm backup, would it come back to 4.1?
</just asking>
Incase you are wondering why would anyone want to do that, its just that iv experienced some wifi issues since jb update. and iv seen the verizon wifi fix. iv flashed it, only to make the signal more worse. i bot my nexus from the google play store. so i think i may have messed up the wifi files. by going back to 4.0.4 i want to copy the files in wifi directory from the etc folder. just hoping to get back to the normal wifi conectivity as on 4.0.4. is there anything im overlooking or any simpler solution?
thanks a lot in advance.
Yes. A nandroid restore formats everything beforehand so you will have no issue restoring between 4.0.4 and 4.1.
Well, I tried Cyanogen, AOPK and now I tried PARANOID 2.0.
None of them works, GAPPS works, but I get the Status 7 error while installing a ROM, i'm using the SGH-T999V and none of them works.
How are you trying to install them?

You are rooted and trying to install with cwm or twrp recovery, right.
I ask because that error reminds me of stock recovery for some reason...

d2tmo wrong device?
Status 7 errors can occur in ClockworkMod for everyone saying he's using a stock recovery.
Make sure your rooted and you should be good
Hey SGH-T999V,
I think we'd all love to help, but we need some more information. Can you tell us step by step exactly what you are doing? Once we have that, I think we will be able to help you past this.
I am fully rooted with clockworld recovery 5.0.4 or something, installing zip from sdcard then Status error 7 and yeah...
From what I've gathered, status 7 errors usually occur when the ROM is incompatible with the device e.g when flashing a CDMA rom on a GSM phone. My first advice would therefore be to confirm that the zip file is for the correct GS3 variant. You mentioned aokp and CM. Both these ROMS refer to the T999 as "d2tmo" and the zip files usually contain this in the name (e.g cm-9-20120909-NIGHTLY-d2tmo.zip). I would therefore check this first before anything else.
Assuming that's not the issue, some suggestions would be:
1. This is a longshot, but try toggling signature verification and see what happens. I doubt this is the issue but I have had update zips fail because this was accidentally toggled
2. Try updating CWM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766552
3. Try changing the recovery to TWRP and see if its the recovery. The easiest way I've found is to use the GooManager app. Install from the play store. Run the app. Hit the menu key and select Install OpenRecoveryScript. Reboot into the TWRP recovery and try flashing from there.
4. Try rerooting the device from scratch
I got this error when I rooted using the Sprint method. I had to reflash cwm using Rom manager before I could install Cyanogen

I had the same problem. I updated cwm and it fixes it. Your version is old....

Just updated CWM to 6.0.1.2 and tried to flash with TWRP... same Status 7 error with every single ****ing ROMs i'm trying to install.
Wiped everything many times before installing zip, nothing works... i'm giving up and downloading stock ROM until Samsung releases official JB 4.1.
You might have to go back to stock and root it again
Sent from my SGH-T999V using XDA Premium HD app
could try installing the roms with Odin
Could try downloading the roms using Rom manager pro and having it install them
You just got to get one to work and you'll be golden
Is it a setting problem in cwm?
Like toggling allow installation of unsigned packages

Just update cwm to a newer version. I promise that'll fix it.

Hi, there,
just looking for solution for the same problem and got this thread...
well, I was rooted and on cyanogen and everything worked fine.
had backups and stuff.
decided to return to stock just to have it updated and backed up and after that to return to cyanogen.
when in CWM, after stock, while re-root-ing, I did a fix permission which erased some of my system files in the backups, so all my backups on the phone became useless (lesson #1: always move your backups away from the phone).
decided to start from scratch, so using ODIN I flashed the proper stock ROM for T999V. Installed the CWM version 5. something, superuser etc.
made a backup this time and store it outside the phone
when I tried to flash the cyanogen 10.0 for m2tmo (which I've flashed before without trouble), I got the error message as our friend here.
I edited the updater-script file in order to erase the first lines and got it flashed...
the problem that I have right now is that I am stuck in the first screen when the cyanogen keeps going round and round and round.... and nothing happens
any suggestion from here?
http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/ClockworkMod_Recovery#Status_7
The status 7 error can be from a bad download, bad signature, and I have seen it from using an old version of clockwork. I would first make sure you are running the most current version of recovery. if that doesn't solve your problem try redownloading the Rom.
would anyone have a zip for latest stock kernel?trying to avoid re-flashing rom an deleteN a bunch of stuff again!searched thread an couldnt find anything (sorry just a noob here)
look in the dev section.. there 2 or 3 factory image zips posted but i think they are deodexed and rooted
If the stock kernel is included in the ROM your using you can just reflash the ROM without wiping anything and it'll replace whatever kernel you flashed with the default one included in the ROM. You won't lose any data that way.

Hey,
I'm new to the forum and new to flashing roms. I am currently running a Samsung Galaxy S3 on 4.1.1 rooted and I would like to flash the latest Paranoid Android Rom 4.2.2 (with HALO). I have been reading and looking up tutorials but there's nothing that's similar to what I want to do.
I understand that before the flashing process, I should Back up my SMS, etc. Once I back them up using a third party app, I flash the rom and restore the backups correct?
Now for the part that i'm actually confused about, the files that are uploaded to the Nexus forum, can I use these files or must I use other PA files specifically for Samsung Galaxy s3? If so where would I get these files and how would I go about finishing the rest of the flashing process (flashing, restoring, installng GAPPS, etc).
If you could help me out, that would be much appreciated. You can PM me.
Thanks

Ok first off hi
Please familiarize yourself with the rules of xda. The abundance of the identical posts isn't needed.
If you flash the rom from the nexus thread you would make a nice shiny paperweight. The backup process is through custom recovery (cwm or twrp) it is for a just in case. Because you are on stock restoring those files over top of a rom is a recipe for disaster.
The latest PA can be found here http://goo.im/devs/paranoidandroid/roms/d2att/pa_d2att-3.60-20JUN2013-050600.zip
The latest gapps for PA is here http://goo.im/devs/paranoidandroid/roms/gapps/pa_gapps-full-4.2-20130615-signed.zip
Please follow some guides on proper backups, wiping and flashing. A little reading will go a long way. Please don't jump in feet first.. Read a detailed guide here before flashing.

Thank you for your understanding and support and my apologies for being impulsive. Just a quick question, will the files you've provided me work with the samsung galaxy s3 i747 4.1.1 model? and I'm assuming the newest PA rom runs on 4.2.X so when it says "6. If you are transitioning from 4.1 to 4.2 or 4.2 to 4.1, you must also format /data. You will lose all personal data so back it up first, the *format /data* is just another selectable option?

Yes it'll work.
When coming from a stock ROM to a 4.2.2 ROM wiping data is more of a friendly persuasion than a option. Not wiping data can give you some storage problems brought on by the new multi user setup of 4.2.2
Transfer all your important stuff to your extSD or your computer and wipe everything suggested.
