Throw and Media Server - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

Question:
How can you use media server and the throw features in the Xperia Ion running ICS (w/o new update)
What I Found:
Sony Site has been telling people to get a client software for computers...<---- What is this?
Edit Nov 10, 2012 More responses from larger community ?

I'm not sure what client software they would be talking about. I've seen the feature on video but not sure what devices it works on. I thought only the Xperia Tablet and select Sony TVs it worked on.

Been mucking about with it for past few days, here are my findings:
"Play-on" for images works well, shares with my 2011 LG smart tv and Windows Media Player on Win7.
Throw for videos does not work at all. The receiver accepts the request to play media from the phone but after constant buffering and skipping doesn't actually play even a 10 second video taken with the phone.
I will try to play with the media server aspect of it too, basically turning it on in Connected Devices makes it visible to your DLNA players (so you initiate the request from your PC/TV/PS3). You then authorize it inside the phone... that's as far as i had gotten last night before the baby woke up
UPDATE: pretty much same thing with media server turned on. VLC doesn't even see it, WMP sees all the pictures and views them fine, if a bit slow. Music/Video doesn't even display the list of available files, just keeps spinning the status indicator. Also, looks like when the phone acts as the client for video streaming, it isn't aware of many different video formats. For instance, MKV files play just fine from SD on the Ion using MX player, and the Ion knows to launch MX player for all my videos (even using DLNA), but its the DLNA app that decides whether it wants to support a given format... basically, it won't send the file to MX if it doesn't like it, even if it can be played.

[Q] Movie Streaming from WHS

Hi guys
I have recently come from the Windows mobile systems to Android (because WP7 is kack), I used to log into my Windows Home Server and stream movies from it to my phone using WebGuide.
This method doesn't seem to work on Android, does anyone know of any applications for Android or Windows Home Server which will allow me to do this again?
Most movies are home made and have been converted to .mp4 or .wmv formats but I do have a couple of .avi movies too.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Terry
I have had luck with the mp4 streaming server from the tools4movies website. Streams well over wifi and will do 3G if the quality is reduced enough. It might suit most of your needs
Never found an Android app and was considering a Windows 7 phone since it is supposed to work well with WHS V2, I have decided to stick with Android.

If you can install VLC player on your server, you can watch your movies with VLC S&C Free app for your DHD. You can play anything with that - mp4, avi, wmv, mkv... you name it.
This is probably old news now but for anyone who wants to know, I finally found an app that works.
It's called Subsonic, it works on port 4040 on your media center/WHS box and streams perfectly for music and video - it doesn't say that it supports video as it was originally designed just for music but it works impressively none the less.
Subsonic also has a trick up its sleeve which allows you to watch live tv directly from your tv tuner, from what I can tell this only works from Media Centre machines itself with a HD Homerun box which allows TV over IP.
I hope this helps anyone who comes across this article.

What media server is subsonic connecting to? I can't get it to see twonky
None, it just sits on my Windows Home Server and streams my personal music and movies directly.

Zune Plays Apple

This is a bit interesting. I recently got a Focus updating from my iPhone. I loaded Zune up and then added my library but was told that a number of songs could not be played. No biggie as I don't really use my phone as my iPod. Fast forward to today and I had unbranded my loaded the pre-Nodo update with the new Zune. I decided to load up my library and I can now play Apple DRM free files (M4A).
Has anyone else noticed this? New feature of the update perhaps, or am I just losing my mind?
Are you on a Mac? I know the Zune Connector software was updated to support Apple audio files
I am on Windows... I wasn't sure if it would work to be honest. The first time that I loaded the files in, none of the ones bought via iTunes would play but now all of them do. I even loaded a song to the phone and it played.
That is quite nice.
In reverse yesterday Zune quit showing ANY artwork of any album, just a plain background. Even with the albums which were previously displaying.
According to the supported codecs list, WP7 can play m4a: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff462087(VS.92).aspx
Are you sure you weren't trying to load m4p files?
No, these are M4A files. Like I said, I might have been out of my mind.
Well, now I am ever happier with the phone.

Play music and videos from cloudservices in Mango bld 7712

I read an article today at WMPoweruser.com from Surer about streaming music from Skydrive.
So I tried it out myself. Result: you can play music and videos from Skydrive and Dropbox.
WM7 opens the webbrowser for you to open the file. It is then downloaded to your phone. Next the Zuneplayer is started and it will play your music or video.
Snag: only audio and video files that can be played with the Zune player on your desktop computer can be opened with the Zuneplayer on your phone.
Solution: convert the files with Zune on your desktop computer, upload it and enjoy!
I tried it from my own Apache webserver in a dedicated folder but it failed because the settings aren't right. The file isn't downloaded, but this can be fixed easily. If it works I will have my own near limitless cloudservice.
Thanks for the heads up. I've been going through, looking for the differences, and the biggest changes I've noticed are in the animations.
Also Amazon music and Google music can be played in the same way.

My understanding is you have to have premium version to access HTML5 player - which makes sense, since they don't want people with mobile devices to be able to use their site, because that would remove a huge incentive for people to buy the premium version.

Two questions:
- Is the file accessible trough the Office Hub on your phone and
- Can you play the mp3 file with the Zuneplayer on your computer
Try also the option of streaming via Dropbox, Amazon or Google. I just tried it and it does work.
soundcloud.com works now, too.. and in the background while doing other things. then it fades on call, and fades back after the call.
well done so far
my page has music on it, too. it should work now, too (being a html5 player). but as it's offline for the time being (i'm moving to a new home, physically), i can't test
so does bandcamp
sometimes, it's nice to not be first. all the pages had time to prepare for iphone/ipad and co, and now just work on wp7. great great.
Check out the music player on lynziekent.com --it works great but i am wondering if there is a way to enable next/previous buttons (the ones with the volume control) to control the playlist inside the music player on the site.

[Q] Best video format?

i've never really watched videos on my phones (mostly due to screen size etc) but i figure now that I have the Galaxy Nexus i could watch a few things on it..
What would be the best video format to convert things to? I dropped an avi of a tv program onto it and it worked but it lagged a bit..
I just converted something to an HD mp4 using Permute for Mac, it bumped the filesize up about 100mb but tested it and it runs smooth in QuickPic or PlayerPro but when trying to use the built in video player (to get the true full screen) it plays for a second, stutters, then says it can't be played.. :S
has anyone managed to get moboplayer working ? says i need an arm7 neon codec - found that on their site ... followed instructions but it still wont work
Video playback may be a bit iffy until the apps are updated; one of the Diceplayer mob posted saying that it now supports HD playback for .mkv. They didn't mention .avi but that generally needs less resources than .avi so you could try your avi in Diceplayer.
The general trend in open source video development is towards .mkv, I'm trying that first.
I'd be surprised if much works well right out of the gate. The true beta is when the masses begin tinkering
vplayer seems to play avi nicely
Ill have to try it out.. downloading now
I've got the same question. And I don't mean what other player can I download to play movies. I mean what format can I encode videos in to get them to play in the native player. I did find the article below. I have tried each of these formats with no luck. Anyone know why Android can't play a movie out of the box?
http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/media-formats.html
And I also tired MoboPlayer with no luck.
pretty much if you use a baseline .mp4 format you will be fine
basically:
h.264 video
LC-AAC audio
no CABAC
and you should be fine up to 1080p these settings work on all my android devices
just set mpeg 4 level 4 and it should take care of it by itself

Thanks noobdeagle,
I have tired those settings on several encoders (handbrake, Adobe Media Encoder, Magic DVD ripper) and still no success. What software are you using to encode? and have you tried the movies on the galaxy nexus? Because I have never had a problem on any other Android devices. Just this one.

gave up re-encoding videos.
vplayer has played everything ive thrown at it so far. the built in movie player seems very limited.

I appreciate the feedback but I have two problems with this particular advice.
1 - Have you seen the permissions for that player? Why would a video player need access to my "Phone calls - Read phone status and identity" and "Your personal information - Read sensitive log data"? Really?
2 - Why the hell can't this phone play videos out of the box. <rant>I have, as I suspect a lot of us here do, a fair few friends that I would call iPhone fanboys. One of the biggest gripes I always hear about android is that every time you run into a problem on Android is the best answer is to root your phone and install cyanogen, or go get xxxx app and that will take care of it, or you should have bought this phone instead. So I get this phone and think that finally Android is going to hit the main stream and I can't even play a movie. WTF!</rant>
Like I said, I appreciate the feedback but I am still looking for a way to play a video in the default video player.

no i have not tried on a galaxy nexus yet as that one week delay sim free means i wont be able to have mine in my hands untill at least next week :\,
i use mediacoder to encode videos, cant speak for the GN but ive used it for my xoom, nexus S, desire hd, htc legend and SGS 2 in the past (however SGS2 supported all codecs quite nicely anyway)
according to the android dev site the supported video list hasnt changed so this is quite strange.

Thanks for the info. I will seek out and try mediacoder.
FYI...I got my GN SIM free from Phones 4U. It was not easy though. I went in to a few stores before finding one that would sell it to me SIM free. And I think that I happened upon the manager at the store that did sell it to me. What makes it even better is that I am in the UK on business for a few months and so I can get the VAT back on my way out. Which makes it nearly 90 quid cheaper.
Thanks again,
cj
seems as if media coder works. Though that is one complicated program. You could get lost in those settings for days.
Thanks again.

[ISSUE] HOX not seeing video files provided by media servers (DLNA)

I rarely start any threads as I usually can find answers on my own.. but so far no luck in this case.
I used to use a Linksys WRT160NL as my media server to store and provide videos which worked great with my Motorola DEFY, Samsung Galaxy SLC, and recently HTC Desire S (ICS).
Now I got the HOX and to my surprise this quad core champ has an issue - it does not recognize any video files on the media server.
I also have my Windows 7 PC set up to stream media (Windows Media Player) and those videos are seen and played by One X just fine.
So I thought that since Windows 7 is OK and Linksys is not, then I should check another router. And so I did.
I got a pretty powerful Netgear WNDR3700 and set up a media server over there - but it's the same thing again.
All other Android devices (and the PC) can see all streamed content but not the HTC One X (only music and pictures are visible).
At the moment I'm running the ARHD 9.1.0 but I noticed the problem with SW 1.29 and later stock 2.17.
3rd party apps can read the media server fine - just not the stock application (Gallery).
Please post if you have similar observations - perhaps we can find a solution or pass it to HTC.
B.R.
Mike.
Windows media player transcode your videos. Your router can't. Use right video format.

OK... and in such a case how do you explain that my Desire S on "stock" ICS 4.0.4 and DEFY (2.3.6) have no problems playing video streams from the same router?

But you're not using stock on ONE X are you?
Maybe it's a ROM issue?
Try going back to stock on ONE X first.
Personally I'm using BubbleuPNP on my HOX, and it's streaming (incoming) everything I can throw at it, video included.
Try putting a mp4 file in the shared folders.

Hi,
I have the same issue on a HTC One S (S4 - Stock Firmware 1.78.401.2) playing from a Buffalo Linkstation so I presume it's incompatibility. I can play the files locally (on the device) and I've checked that they are of a standard type. These files stream using DLNA to other devices without any problems (PS3 / Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1). I was also going to buy another DLNA server as I though this was at fault at first.
As you have found it works fine from Windows Media Centre without problems. It will display photos and play MP3 over DLNA and I can browse directories. If I can find anymore info I'll post here.
Crossman.
I have the same issue. I suspect it has a problem using anything but the default Window Media Streaming port. I am running serviio, and same issue with HTC One X. LG Home Theater can see and play the files just fine.
Update: The following makes it work however: BubbleUPnP. Used it with MXPlayer Pro. And with Serviio, it plays anything, unlike the crippled Windows Media Services

Sorry for the bump, but the stock app is still a no go for me. I can try to fix this (I've done several mods to stock apps in the past) if you could elaborate a bit more about the issue you are guessing.
Thanks.
