Safe Recovery? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Greetings,
I've goofed around with rooting, and flashing kernels and modems so far with my device, but now I want to get into looking at different ROMs.
I keep seeing that it's critical to use a "known safe kernel/recovery" to avoid bricking, however very little information about what those safe kernels are.
I'd like to try the Re-Calked ROM. Would Agat's FI27repack with recovery be a safe kernel to use for this ? That's what I've currently got on my device.
So sorry for a noob question, but I've had a hard time figuring out a definitive answer for this as information seems to become outdated quickly, and it's difficult to determine what supersedes what.

fi27 is the latest build.. agats is safe but most would reccomend using el26cwm kernel.. its a gb kernel so you would need to odin/mobile odin it then have rom on sd card or internal storage already and go into recovery do your wipes it requires then flash ur rom

Just to be absolutely safe, it is better to use el26 safe cwm. Think I read about some bricks happening using that particular agat repack?

I heard about bricks happening flashing from agat to aokp.. But it was a problem with aokp
But in wouldn't use that repack anyway.. I'd feel better using his source kernel

Just to clear any confusion, it was not the Fi27 repack. It was a combination of Fi25 repack and going to an aokp build.
Let's try to keep this clear to avoid any undue misconceptions by posting references without making blind statements.
If there IS a reference to a Fi27 issue, please reference it.
And as always - When in doubt, use EL26.

I only use el26 to wipe and flash, the only thing I flash from "safe" ICS recoveries in the el26zip and then reboot recovery. I've been too lazy to use mobile Odin lately so started just flashing el26 via recovery only wiping cache and dalvik before install. I've had issues with cwm 6 hanging while doing backups

So if I want to flash an ICS ROM is EL26 ok to use even though some ICS ROMs require an ICD kernel?

All ics roms require an ics kernel
But yes you can flash an ics rom with the el26 kernel (just boot straight into recovery) when you flash the ics rom of your choice the kernel is already included; so after you flash everything, the ROM shall boot

I'm a little confused lol.. I mean you don't have to flash an ics kernel and then an ics rom.. Unless is the *rare case the ROM you are trying to Flash doesn't have a kernel included... But you do need an ics kernel to. Boot an ics rom so maybe that's what was meant?
And these random reboots.. Have you tried a fresh install wiping data... Cache.. Dalivk cache

I use Calkulins Format All with data wipe. After I flash the ROM then it boots up and I set my phone up and as soon as I make a call or browse the web my phone reboots. So what I just did was odin back to Fh13 then install el26 cwm using mobile odin. Then I flashed. Agats FI03 then I flashed crawrj fi27 rom. Now waiting to see if it reboots.

In the future I would try wiping manually, I've heard some users have issues using those wipe all scripts.. But some don't.. So I guess it's just a case by case type of thing
And if the reboots keep happening I would do a fresh install of another rom just to see.. Assuming you like the stock look I recommend you to take a look at recalked..pretty nice rom

Yeah like Miguel said try wiping manually, from a "safe" recovery. I personally prefer el26+cwm. I've had issues with the wipe all scripts not grabbing everything. I typically wipe manually then flash a format all x2 script from rujules then flash my rom and gapps then wipe cache and dalvik again then boot to system. Then after system boots I go back to recovery and install my inverted gapps after my account is set up and any mods I wanna install wiping cache and dalvik before and after and i rarely have issues with FCs or reboots. Usually I get em from testing something that ends up not being compatible

A little ICS flashing help

A bit confused...
I'm on CM9 alpha 1 and want to get to alpha 2
The CM9 install page says to just use CWM5 to flash the ROM and I dont have to wipe anything...
But I see several things that seem to say flashing ICS stuff through CWM can brick the phone...
Some clarification please?
number 1 do not use rom manager!
number 2 it safe to flash using clockwork mod, upgrading ics roms. but to go back to gingerbread you need to use Odin.
at least that's what I understand. if I'm wrong someone please correct me

It's not safe to do any thing with a ics kernel .even wiping data cache etc can brick a phone ..... Always use A GB kernel to flash anything until we get source and they can fix it.... U can use mobile Odin to flash the el26 cwm kernel and then flash the rom without wiping data .... Make sure to flash rom twice and then flash gapps and you are good ....

Are you saying dont wipe anything while you have an ICS ROM installed... or just don't try to wipe when you have the ICS recovery installed?.. Like if I have an ICS ROM installed and flash back to an EL29 kernel, I can wipe then right?

yes in theory with a gb based kernel you should be able to wipe but I personally recommend odin'ing a full gb from and kernel then using recovery. I also recommend using calk's wipe zips because they seem to be much safer than CWM wiping directly.

I think it's pretty safe, if you are upgrading your current rom or moving from one ICS TW-based rom to another. Ex: going from Calkulin FE22 to agat63 tFE22, probably should flash Calkulin's Format-all script, but flashing the rom should be fine. I would follow instructions in OP and not use it with AOSP/AOKP roms.

I personally have not dared to try backup or restore yet, but I have flashed quite a few tweaks and even 1 that wiped the cache... no brick so far.
I would stay away from factory reset wipe data/cache until it is confirmed fixed.

Going from Blazer ICS Rom to AOKP ICS Rom

I have my rooted E4GT and the Blazer ICS Rom is installed on it at the moment. I kinda want to try and switch to AOKP's latest build and try it out, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that since they clearly stated not to flash from ICS to ICS.
Could anyone point me in the right direction as to what I should do in order to make the switch to AOKP?
Links to both ROM's respective threads:
AOKP Build 40
Phantom's Blazer Rom
Thanks for your time.
You can just Odin the el26 cwm (sorry don't have the link to it on my phone) and flash AOKP from there.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
This is my method, it is 99.9% safe. You can also re-use it to go from other ROMs to any other ics ROM.
Download these drivers
Download this: OC ODIN File for EL26 and this: E4GT Root Utility
Using Titanium Backup, make a backup of all your stuff, or use your preferred back-upper, just not nandroid. I recommend buying the Pro version, because it will save you so many times, and the dev is great. It's a little expensive though for an app.
OC Odin back to EL26. The good thing about this is, the process is straight forward, and doesn't add to your flash counter, and does not yellow triangle either.
Open up e4gtauto-sfx.exe, option C, then I. This gives you CWM, And just in case, I do not recommend using other than standard CWM to flash ICS roms. but that's me.
When your phone reboots, it should have CWM, and be rooted, just load up the AOKP files, do a data wipe, and flash.
Thank you both for the replies
Would I be able to use calkulins format all to do the wipes? Or does that only work for certain ROMS? It seemed pretty fool proof when I used it, so I was wondering if I could just use that again and it would work just the same? I don't want to forget something and brick my phone as a result
And I'll look into titanium backup, thanks for the suggestion.

Alright, but all I should need to do is install the EL26 + CWM and I can flash AOKP? I don't need to go back to a stock gingerbread ROM or anything, or will the OC EL26 CWM do that for me?
And you said you don't recommend calkulin's format all for ICS roms, but that's what I was told to use for the Phantom Blazer ICS rom when I was flashing it?
Also, one more question; what is "flash count" and is it a bad thing? I'll do some googling on it myself, but I'd like to hear your explanation because I don't always understand people's ways of describing things and usually take weird explanations to understand so yours would still be much appreciated just in case, thanks. ^_^

You just need to be on a safe recovery.... if you wipe data in an unconfirmed recovery you can cause a brick. Either use the el26 that all use or the el29-reboot kernel. Both will work no matter what you install regardless of you install (granted you flash a working rom). I prefer the el29 because you install via mobile Odin and it boots straight to safe CWM recovery.

new e4gt owner with questions about roms

i just picked up an e4gt today, i had one back in december that i rooted then sold. so im back and now there's a ton of stuff out there for this phone.
i just came over from the evo design where there is pretty much nothing happening, and before that i had an evo shift. i had cm7 installed on that and loved it.

I'm paranoid to do anything without an option for recovery.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Here is your safest bet (as in super safe):
1. Download the el26 safe cwm kernel from the kernel repository in the sticky for this phone
2. Download cm9 6 and gapps
3. Follow cm9 6 download instructions
4. Let it boot
5. Use mobile Odin if you have it (highly recommend as it makes flashing so easy) and flash the el26 kernel that you downloaded in the kernel section from external sd...always check md5 sum first!
6. Once u see the blue light on ur phone in the LED, hold power+volume up to boot into recovery, once the sgs2 logo shows you can lay off the buttons
7. If you didn't do it in time or held too long, just pull the battery and go to recovery via power+volume up
8. You should be in cwm, flash the nightly of cm9, clear dalvik and cache, then flash the chris 41g b3 kernel and reboot
9. Enjoy
10. From this point forward you have a bomb rom and working recovery that will allow backup/nand/flashing safely.

To Install
Boot to recovery
Make an NAND Backup
Wipe the phone (with the Format All X2 script)
Flash Part 1
Boot the phone
Go to the updater (Under put things back to stock) and install Part 2 (Two part install is to finish theming Talk)
Reboot and Enjoy
When I did this I went to CWM to flash this through odin. Rom works very smooth. There is a ton of information in the thread but that should get you started.

Help with sister's E4GT

I rooted my sister's E4GT last year and she's still running Calkulin's E4GT ROM v2.6 and her current kernel is 2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EL13-CL806482
She's still on Gingerbread, and I want her to enjoy the ICS experience or JB if there's any stable JB ROMs.
My phone is an EVO so I am not comfortable/familiar with the Samsung pitfalls. I don't want to brick my sister's phone.
On my phone I'd download the zip, and in recovery factory reset, wipe data, cache, dalvik, system, and then flash the ROM, but I've read that could lead to a brick on the E4GT.
What's the safest way for me to flash some ICS/JB ROMs for her to try out?

You can just flash just about anything once you are in that recovery. The only major difference for you to know is that once you flash the rom, the kernel that is packed into the rom will also change the recovery. Also I do not really think there is a need to use a wipe all zip just unnecessary and usually causes error's when installing certain roms.
Most of the newer rom's do come with a safe recovery, but if you are unsure and have not read much and verified that the included recovery in the rom is safe I would recommend using el26cwm.
You can also use this recovery, this one will boot straight to recovery

Most of the roms I have flashed say to use format all. I always use it and haven't come acrossed any errors. Doesn't mean it is absolutely necessary or will not cause errors though.
