[Q] NFC vs Tasker - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I upgraded my phone from Inspire to S3 . I just setup google wallet using the sticky thread. But I am just not yet convinced to use NFC tags as compared to Tasker for automated tasks.
Can someone shed a light on where/if NFC tags are better than Tasker?
Few NFC uses could be
1) In car where you turn on BT, Brightness 100% , Start music
2) On the toilet where you can start your favorite game
3) Near main door where you can turn on Wifi( similar to Tasker location)

IIRC, you can use NFC tags WITH Tasker, which makes sense.
EDIT: and google says...

Well I am using Tasker since a year and love it but would like to know advantages of NFC over Tasker.
eg. I can turn on Wifi based on location instead of tagging using NFC.

I think you're just needlessly confusing yourself.
Think of an NFC tag as just yet another EVENT that can trigger an ACTION.
Instead of having your course-grained GPS location turn WiFi back on at home, for example, you could have an NFC tag do it when you swipe it at the door, and another tag in your car dock to turn WiFi off, carmode on, navigation on, etc. This probably isn't the best example.

i use nfc task launcher.. most powerfull one i could find works fine.
samsung one is limited.
when getting in car i have a toggle tag.
first scan
turns off wifi
turns on bluetooth
starts audbile app
sets ringer and media volume to max
sets brightness to auto
next scan for getting home
sets bluetooth off
vols. to max
brightness to dim
wifi on.
etc. etc.

I used NFC Task Launcher as well... but got rid of it because I found myself barely ever using it... but it is probably the best one.

Forgive me PLEASE for what I'm about to ask, but . . . Why would someone pay for nfc tags and then program them, instead of using Tasker? I guess what i'm asking is, what's the main difference between nfc tags and apps like Tasker and Llama? Is it so you can transfer the programmed info that's on the tags to other nfc-enabled phones? I've read and googled, but don't quite understand the advantages of tags and tectiles over free apps. Can someone please draw it out in crayon for me? Not being a smart-ass, I honestly can't connect the dots

Well, for one thing, I don't necessarily want to perform all those tasks everytime I get in the car. If I'm just running to the store down the street I don't really care about turning off wifi, starting bluetooth, changing volumes, launching apps, etc. I typically only do that if I'm going to be in the car for a while. With an NFC tag I can swipe it if I want all that stuff otherwise I don't bother. As smart as Tasker is, it can't read my mind so it's going to do that stuff every time.

I read the big advantage is to let tasker unlock the phone when near an NFC tag and then run programs from there.
I can't find the thread this morning but will look for it again.
Do don't use Tasker but if it is the only one that can do this, I will get it off the Appstore and some tags.
BTW- which tags are you guys suggesting works the best?

Probably because you can use NFC tags when you WANT them to be used (as someone else mentioned.... don't necessarily HAVE to have your favorite internet radio station playing through Bluetooth in your car if you're only driving 5 minutes away to get some groceries).... and they don't really affect battery life since it's not constantly checking your location through GPS or scanning for WiFi signals.

One of my tasker profiles is to go into airplane mode at work, based on sensing a wifi network we have. I work on 30th floor, surrounded by data center and shielding, etc and we have 0 cell signal, so the phone just sits there searching for signal and it kills the battery otherwise. When I leave for lunch, it no longer sees the wifi and turns signal back on, and turns it off when I come back, and same for when I leave for the day.
However, it doesn't *always* work as expected (admittedly my weak tasker skills might play a part here lol). So I was thinking about pickup up a tag, easy just have it at my desk, go into airplane mode at work, out of airplane mode when I leave.
Another option is to just use time based triggers, but I'm not always at the same office, and I'm not always going to lunch at the same time, etc so static time rules would'nt work that well.
EDIT - reply to this made me look at the profile, and I might have better success by turning specific parts off (cell, BT, etc) vs just going into full airplane mode. I'll give that a try. Still, seems like a tag would be uber simple lol.

The easiest way that I have found to look at is an NFC tag is a programmable switch and it only works when I choose to use the switch. Tasker when running on the other hand will perform actions based on conditions once programmed, the conditions act as the switch, if the conditions are met the switch is activated whether or not I want it to run or not. Both can be used in combination. For instance you may want to program an NFC tag to control whether or not Tasker is active in certain situations.

Anyone Using Tasker?

Anyone here using it? what is this app for? is it worth buying? does it give u battery life? im really interested but i cant find no videos on it on youtube. please share your thoughts.
It is worth every penny. The best app for android IMO. It is not very easy to master it, but even the basic stuff has made a vast difference too the behavior of my phone.
For example, I have extended my battery life to 38 hours simply by having it automatically go into airplane mode between midnight and 6am.
It will turn off wifi, back screen brightness down, change screen timeout to 10 seconds and give me a notification popup and sound when my battery drops below 15%.
It will turn on gps when Wavesecure is activated, something Wavesecure can't do by itself.
It will turn my ringer off when I get within 200m of the two cinemas I go to.
It turns wifi on when I get home, and off when I leave. Same for work.
It loads my music app when I plug my headphones in.
Tasker can make widgets! I have one set up to (with one press from my home screen) turn up screen brightness, turn on gps, turn up speaker volume to max, wait 2 seconds, then launch google navigation. It will then turn everything back when I exit out of navigation.
It will, on weekdays, text my girlfriend at a certain part of my journey home after work. That way my dinner is ready when I get home!!!
I would say try out the free 1 week trial. There is even a wiki and web site with extensive instructions and examples uploaded by other users. You can also import profiles as well as create your own. The really handy ones I have exported to my sd card, and e-mailed them to a friend when he bought Tasker. Not sure I helped him though as there is a steep learning curve for this app, and it is worth being patient with it to learn its ways for yourself.
I think it is worth much much more than the asking price.

wow sounds sooo nice . i already bought full version yesterday but havnt even opened the app once . well i did open it once it seems hard to understand lol . so for all this task does the gps need to be on? or not? and can u turn off 3g?
You can turn off APN, but don't think that works well in the UK. Sorry, my knowledge of 3g is limited.
Basically, you can have tasker turn on and off nearly any feature of your phone that your want. There are two sides to tasker. The "Profile" and the "Task".
I have found it is best to first set up the "task". Say you want to save battery power at night. Select the task button and select "new". Call it "power save" or something. Select the + symbol and select "Net". In this menu, pick "Airplane mode" and select to ' on'. Then hit ok, then save.
Now to create the 'Profile' where you define the contexts that will activate the "power save" task you just created.
Select 'new' then select the 'time' context. Enter the time you would like to have your phone go into airplane mode. After hitting 'ok' it will take you to the profile page where you set up what now happens between the times you just specified. From the drop-down at the to of the page, select the "power save" task you created earlier. Hit 'ok'.
Done. Your Tasker will now shut off all your radios between the times you entered.

Worth every penny. I use it to:
- turn on GPS for programs that need it (turns back of when editing the program)
- turn notifications off when starting desk clock
- change volume when connecting head phones
There are endless possibilities, try it and then buy it.
i've bought it for little things but want it to be able to handle 3g data which it doesn't
i,e turn on wifi, if no conn after 10 secs, turn on 3g, auto sync for a min, then turn data off.
works fine and dandy with wifi, but not 3g.

I used to check periodically (every 3 minut) if my car Bluetooth near. If yes connect and and hold on the connection. If disconnect wait 15 minutes and seek again... save really battery... fantastic...

Wow sounds like you have a good understanding and has some good stuff. I don't know if you can, but I posted a page where maybe people can leave profiles for those of us who are a bit more chronologically challenged.
This is the greatest
I use tasker for everything. I am very forgetful so I have it pop up astrid tasks when I leave the house or work. The quiet mode works well for work and there is even a way to auto check in to foursquare.
Worth every penny, it makes your phone 10 times better and is a must have app.
I have profiles that do the following:
-During work hours and within range of the office set Vibrate, turn off wi-fi.
-When within range of home turn on Wi-Fi
-If at home after certain time in evening go silent
-When leaving car (detected by bluetooth connection to stereo), store time and location. Have icon on desktop to retrieve info and show on map to find car.
-When on call (by checking diary) if a colleague calls always ring regardless of silent.
-Say caller/texter name
-Send magic packet to wifes phone to report location and show on map (handy when shopping)
Plus many other scripts....
I find that this program has a pretty high learning curve...
Is there a wiki I can read up or a way to import other people's profiles?

Using "Cell Near" instead of GPS
I was using Tasker to turn WIFI on and off based on GPS locations. However, I found an alternate method that does not use GPS calls (and waste battery use). Instead, I am now using "Cell Near" to find the cell tower near home and turn WIFI off when I am not within distance of it.
I have posting walkthroughs of all of the most useful profiles I have collected. Check it out at http://dbilliter.blogspot.com

As soon as I enter my work car park, it drops the volumes, switches off WIFI
I leave my work car park, volume to max,
I enter home, WIFI on, Volume max
after 11pm - 6.30am everything on silent, wifi & data off
then when i scan my NFC tag in the car, switches on GPS, loads co pilot
re-scan tag, turns off GPS and closes co-pilot

Was thinking the same. Any partial/wakelock issues caused by the program constantly assessing the environment. As it happens I am thinking of using the program to reduce battery drain and shutting down WiFi when out of range of home networks but if it's negated by the situation above it seems pointless for my needs.
Any one care to comment?
I've been using Tasker for a couple of years accross 4 different devices now (X10i, DHD, TF101 and GS3). I have a lot of profiles set up to do various different things and I can honestly say I've never seen a noticeable effect on battery life.
That said though I don't use the GPS location state at all. I imagine that particular state would drain battery pretty quickly. I use the WiFi Near state a lot though and, as I've said, never really noticed a detrimental drain on the battery.
I suppose it depends on what you do with it but overall IMO it's a very well written app. Extremely useful too.

Yep! This is what I was hoping to use it for too. My betterbatterystats has identified my Wifi as the one real drain on what is still a very good battery life. So although I could turn it off myself I just know I will forget to turn it back on at home and would like a program to do it for me. BUT if one negates the other it's not worth the effort.

Well your WiFi has to be on to use the WiFi Near state. You could potentially combine it with a Time state too though. Just for example you could have Tasker turn WiFi on for 1 minute once an hour to check for your network(s) then either turn off again if no network detected or connect and remain on if a network is detected... if that makes any sense!
It would save battery compared to leaving WiFi on all the time.

What effect does it have on, I have a task to turn of Wi-Fi during 10am and 1pm; but I try to turn on Wi-Fi during this period. Will it automatically turn it off again, or allow me to continue to use Wi-Fi?

It will allow you to continue to use it. That sort of profile works as a toggle based on the time state so at 10am it will turn it off - but only at 10am. If you were to turn it on again straight away it would stay on until you either turn it off manually or another profile kicks in which is set to turn it off again. The same goes for anything else such as ringer/silent/vibrate, mobile data, GPS etc.
@Greedyfly: you're welcome

Tasker can do wonders...but it requires you to be some kind of Tasker-scientist to get things done. I recently discovered Llama as well. It's free and simple but capable.
Yeah Tasker does have a reasonably steep learning curve admittedly. By no means insurmountable to most though.
I suppose it depends on what/how you want to automate. Tasker is very powerful but not so simple. Llama is free and easier to use but no so powerful.
Both are good automation solutions. Locale is another one to check out.

I've been using Tasker for the best part of a year now, awesome piece of software. Negligible impact on battery life and it's astoundingly powerful. A few examples of profiles I currently use - detects headphones/bluetooth headset and reads any text and who sent it, useful when cycling or out on the bike. Disables screen lock when at home, I use the phone as a control for my media centre so it remains unlocked at home and turns the screen on as soon as the handset is picked up, controls a variety of connection states according to location and time.
These are just scratching the surface. On top of this I've had direct dealings with the dev on a couple of occasions, genuinely nice bloke who does his damndest to solve problems as quickly as possible. All in all, this and Titanium backup are by far the two most useful pieces of software I've bought:good:

[Q] Tasker on GN

Hey folks I have a few Tasker questions and I don't see a recent thread for this awesome app. I have found some threads that suggest profiles to download. I would rather tinker and learn how to build them myself.
For instance I am looking to save a little battery life at work where I have an incredibly weak cell signal. My phone drains itself trying to connect/reconnect to the towers all day long. My thought was to have Tasker put my phone in airplane mode when I am at work by using the neighbor's secured wifi as a trigger. I can't use my phone at work so this seems like it would be an acceptable state to leave my phone in for 8 hours. Obviously I could turn it off, but I use it occasionally during breaks, mostly for offline stuff. My question is whether I will drain my battery by having Tasker constantly checking to see if the condition of my profile (near Wifi) is satisfied.
Thanks!

GPS Signal Lost in IGO when not in focus

Anyone else have an issue with IGO, that when I switch to desktop or another app, after a few seconds i hear "GPS Signal Lost"
Its rather quick to re-establish a connection when i switch back but seems weird to not get a signal only because its not in focus.
While in focus its rock solid, never drops out.
Setting or known issue?
Always, but I've been got used and don't care...
Snap. Always does it.
Sent from my Hudl 2 using Tapatalk
It has to be an Android issue I had a Pioneer Navi unit (they use iGO) never lost signal once locked in, well as long as I didn't go in to a tunnel or parking structure, switched to Android and every time I look away it drops GPS but only for a second or two. I believe there is an advanced audio setting to mute the announcement of GPS signal loss, but I cannot remember if it's a GUI option or if it needs to be put in the sys.txt.
Try this settings in SYS.TXT:
[sound.announcer]
gps_signal_lost = 0; disables voicemail alert "lost signal GPS"
gps_disconnected = 0; disables voice notification "GPS turned off"

That may be a viable option, when its in focus i never loose signal....so really its just the voice announcement that annoys me when i switch to another App.
I used to use an app called active GPS, can be set to acquire a gps lock and keep it on boot, not sure if you are really losing the gps lock or if Igo just thinks it is.

Im not losing signal no......Its approx 5 seconds after IGO loses focus and it regains the signal immediately after i switch back.
Perhaps this is intentional to allow another App access to the GPS Signal.....ie only 1 App can have access at once, so they only keep it during focus?
Not sure but its peeing me off
Ill check if theres anything buried in IGO settings or the alternative (Not that i like working around a problem) is to quieten the "Lost signal" audio.

Maybe that app requires a temporary connection to the GPS port (that might not be shareable between more apps)...

In Android there is no problem for multiple applications to use GPS signal at the same time. You can run 5 navigation apps and another 5 tracking apps at the same time if you have enough RAM. The OS access the GPS sensor and shares the information to apps.
The question is, what really happens. If you continue with iGo in the background, is it still navigating you? Do you hear the correct voice commands or is it really lost and has no idea where you are?
For me all Navigation application work even in background. They have a service (identified by an icon in notification bar) that runs even if the main app is in background. You should also check the GPS icon in navigation bar to see if GPS is shut down.

I'm not completely sure about the following, but IMHO there is a difference between the smartphones and the MTCB head units for which regards the GPS receiver.
In fact, while generally in a smartphone processor (ex. Qualcomm) the GPS receiver is included in the chip itself, AFAIK in a Rockchip processor (ex. RK3188) the GPS chip is not present, but should be externally connected to the system through an internal serial connection (USB?) and managed by the MCU: for this reason there might be some sharing problems among apps, problems not occurring on a smartphone integrated architecture.

Ye thats interesting coz this morning i had to go somewhere and used navigation as apposed to just having IGO open on Map.
When Navigating to a destination, you can swap to desktop and other apps and it still guides you with no Lost Signal being mention.
So its only when you have maps open, not using a route navigation and you put IGO into the background.
I assume its IGO giving up the lock on the signal for some reason.
Same issue. IGO drops GPS when focus is lost.

Ye possible, I also noticed a setting in GPS menu to allow location based services. So might try with that off.
I'll have a play around and report back. :silly:

I just installed a new head unit 4.4.2 and I have the same issue with IGO. I will try a few things and see what I can find as well.
Will report back if I solve it. It is bloody annoying. I am positive it is an Android thing, not an IGO issue.

That would make sense, it would be a battery saving feature, no need for a persistent GPS lock (that sucks battery life) if you are just following your location on a map (when the map isn't in focus anymore) but when navigating you want the persistent lock so you can continue receiving directions regardless of what app has focus. I suspect a lot of GPS apps act this way, they just don't announce it.

Possibly
Google maps acts that way, with maps open, if you open another app, the GPS icon disappears on my phone, but comes back as soon as I refocus on maps, but if I am navigating somewhere then the icon stays there.
Not that it offers you any help but my gps icon is on all the time regardless of what app is or isn't running.
If the above theory is correct then your answer may lie in the power saving and lox location settings.

But on a smartphone this battery saving behavior doesn't happen...
And on a HU there is no battery at all and no battery saving needs, on Android all apps should be able to detect if the device is on battery power or currently external power supplied...

It does happen, test for yourself, but the battery will drain quicker with Maps open and an active GPS lock rather than when another app is in focus and no GPS lock, that is also why the mode to not use active GPS is called battery saving.
Take that up with the developer, but I doubt they will build in an option that is only useful to a very small number of users.
Personally I don't understand why you need the map window open if you aren't actively navigating somewhere anyway.

Anyone using Tasker in their Pixel?

I've been loving my pixel and the stock Android experience from an iPhone. Always heard about Tasker but never done into it. Any here use it? Able to share your most used profiles and tasks?

I'm actually a Pixel 2 XL owner but I do use Tasker.
I have several profiles that include:
- Turn WiFi on when I get home
- Turn off mobile data when on WiFi/re-enable when off WiFi
- Lots of file management (putting pictures/videos into the folders of my choosing)
- Turning Bluetooth off after a few minutes if nothing is connected to it
- Show or hide the mobile data icon in the status bar depending on its status
- Disable notifications and enter DND mode when in certain apps such as Google Maps or Instagram
To name a few lol.
I love Tasker, it's definitely my favourite app and the biggest reason it's worth owning an Android over iPhone in my opinion.
If you're new to it, I suggest Googling, a lot. That's how I got started and I've come a long way since!
I used Tasker until I got my pixel 3 XL, which is when I discovered this app called "MacroDroid". It does the same things as Tasker, but the interface is a lot more simpler and intuitive. You should check it out!
I have one that is suppose to automatically cut on my wifi when I range but it's not working. Guess I'll look online again thanks

I use Tasker on my 3XL.
Mainly it disables WIFI, turns off notifications, and starts my music app when I'm in my car, mutes my phone when in meetings, and disables notifications when I have headphones on or connected to my Bluetooth speakers.
I've used Tasker since my first Android device years and years ago. Mute ringer at work (calendar based), start/stop music when my BT headphones are connected/disconnected, change screen timeout for some apps (keep it on longer for ones I specify, 30 seconds for everything else), lock screen rotation in some apps and not others, etc.
It's a steep learning curve but once you get the hang of it you can do some pretty neat stuff.
I need a setting that puts my 3XL into HSPA+ instead of LTE while at work. I have LTE signal, but it's unusable due to others syncinc constantly. HSPA+ runs fine. I can't find an app that's able to do this. I can't even find a widget that will let me make this toggle quickly without rooting.
On this week's podcast...
https://twit.tv/shows/all-about-android/episodes/395?autostart=false
They talked about Tasker and things changing come January 1st...
.
It's a good show when they 'luck out' and get an honest to goodness developer to share thoughts.
I use it to automatically toggle Always On Display. Requires Secure Settings app and root. Basically I make sure it's off when I go to bed and on when the phone is docked in my car (when connected to my car's BT). Used to do a lot more but haven't really needed anything else.
Able to share how you disable wifi? I know theres in option in the settings to only connect to saved networks but it requires wifi scanning to be on. I set up a profile but I don't think it's working. Doesn't turn off my wifi when I leave my network

When you are in your task, click the PLUS to add an action, NET, then WiFi. You can then set it to ON, OFF, or TOGGLE.
Hope that helps.
Must have for an Android, my opinion.
Pixel phone or not. Tasker is in my opinion one of the must have android apps there. It is also one of the best. There can be a small learning curve for new users but once you are in it: oof! The possibilities even without root are amazing! I have been using Tasker since the Samsung Galaxy S3. I remember using the APK version downloaded in early years. But bought the paid some years ago. It is worth it. Seriously.
I have that. I have it set to OFF. Once I get to the main page I long press the task and select "move to exit". Maybe that's where I'm messing up at?

I used to use Tasker for SO MUCH.
Biggest thing I did was that I had automated turning wifi on once I was "close" to home, then once it connected to wifi - turn on ringers, screen brightness, turn off gps, etc (and similarly for going to work).
It helped a LOT with battery back in the day to make sure that GPS was only on when I needed it.
But now I am trying to let android handle that GPS stuff. I noticed in our settings with Pixel / Pie that there isn't even a "battery saving" location mode anymore! You can still try to turn it on via Tasker (after you have given Tasker secure settings permissions) but I am not sure what it really does in that case.
Moving on from that situation, I still use tasker for simpler things such as "profiles" for at work and at home.
And screen rotation only on certain apps, etc.
A side note --- it seems that you really don't need ROOT for much at all anymore, as long as you are willing to hook up to a computer and do some ADB commands to get the secure settings permission, that's really it.
Anyone else have cool ideas to do with Tasker?
WiFi and location one you mentioned are what I want. Ha e the location one set you but need to grant permission. Need to get a cable to sync

Yeah you are correct, the location needs the secure settings permissions. It's real easy to do though.
Since we now only have location ON or OFF (not sure if that is from Pixel, or Android P)
- I don't know if it's worth messing with? (we used to have "High Accuracy (GPS and other connectivity on phone), "Battery Saving" (was cell tower locationing only), "GPS ONLY" (not sure why one would pick that and not the high accuracy)
Unless you want to flat out turn location off when not on GPS (I used to go between battery saving and high accuracy -- and it seems like tasker might let you force that still? I'm just not sure)
Also I think having wifi ON the whole time is really not a battery drain at all anymore.
I say this because I believe there is a bit of a battery drain to have tasker checking all of this stuff all of the time.
I could be incorrect though, hopefully someone clarifies if I am wrong on this.

I use 4G LTE Switch to stay in LTE at work, but I think HSPA+ is one of the options you can select to lock into.

I noticed a difference in battery life when I turned high accuracy off. Forgot I had it off when I used GPS the other day and it was still a accurate. May just leave it off for good
