Hello Everyone,
I haven't had time to search the forum for my question. If I push the 4.1.2 update, does anyone know if that will re-lock my Nexus? My Nexus is unlocked and I keep the stock 4.1.1.
Thanks
Eric
No the update will not relock the bootloader. It will remove root privileges though.

Any way to keep root privileges, or restore them after the upgrade (without a full system wipe)?

If your bootloader is unlocked re-rooting is easy. Just fastboot boot a custom recovery and flash a Superuser or SuperSU zip

1. Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper in the Play Store.
2. Backupt Root with that app.
3. Update via OTA.
4. Restore Root with the Rootkeeper.
5. Profit.
disable annoying 4.1.2 OTA system update notification?
How do I disable the annoying 4.1.2 OTA system update notification? I am rooted, have a custom ROM and want to wait until that ROM is updated to 4.1.2.
I have searched and can't find a clear answer. All I've found is answers for gingerbread... Or vague answers like "freeze the updater file with Titanium Backup!" I would if I knew the file name and where it's located.
If there's a file I can freeze or rename, please tell me the exact name of the file and exactly where it is.
I would be using Root Explorer or Titanium Backup.
THANK YOU!

I forgot to backup my root access on Voodoo OTA RootKeeper before doing the update to 4.0.4. In version 4.0.2 I had root access, but with locked bootloader. So I have two questions:
There is an option to restore the root access without unlock the bootloader?
There is an option to copy the files of those who made up the root access backup in 4.0.2 to put in backup place of Voodoo RootKeeper OTA (don't know which is the location) and restoring the root access?
Thanks

I know that and the procedure, but I have to wipe data =/
I will wait for a new way to root without unlock the bootloader, if it is possible
I hope you find a way
but for me i'd do it the hard way
looks faster for me

I'm with IMM76I 4.0.4, if a new update rolling out and the update does not appear I'll unlock the bootloader
Okay, I was on ICS 4.0.4 Yakju build. I flashed it using Gnex tool kit and then rooted the phone as well. Also left the bootloaded unlocked.
Today I received the OTA 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update. I began with the procedure and it downloaded well and good but then the installation was interrupted and the phone booted into my old 4.0.4 version. As it turns out, you should not accept the OTA update if you're rooted (lucky, I got away with it). I dont exactly know what caused my installation to fail, the root or the unlocked bootloader or both. Anyway, I used Gnex Tool Kit and 'Flashed the Google Factory Stock Rom' (exactly the same way how I got the yakju 4.0.4 build in the first place) , that left my phone with just as new Stock 4.0.4, UNROOTED with locked bootloader! Just like out of the box. Then I went on with my OTA update and it went through like a charm.
Anyway, now I'm on 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. I want to root the phone because I use too many apps that requires root access. So the latest version of Gnex Tool Kit (7.4) supports Jelly Bean root. But I dont wanna Root my phone this time unless I know how to UnRoot it. Don't wanna go against OTAs. (might start using CM rom when the next android version comes out) but till then I only want OTA updates.
So, can anyone tell me how to UNROOT the 4.1.1 Jelly Bean? (without wipe or deleting all the data) It'll be awesome if it can be done by Gnext Tool Kit. If not, then I dont mind doing it the hard way.
I wanted to post this question in 'Gnext toolkit' forum but I dont have enough privileges. So please help me out
As you can see I'm a noob. So please excuse my ignorance :/
Thanks a lot
Nobody? Please anyone help
Well root and your bootloader status (unlocked or not) really shouldn't affect your ability to receive an OTA IIRC. It should still work successfully although you may lose root.
Anywho, to unroot all you have to do is delete the 'superuser' application whether it be Superuser or SuperSu and then delete 'su' in /system/bin. That should work though IMO the cleanest way to unroot is to just restore the stock images.

Well, I guess you cant uninstall SuperUser. I tried that before updating but it acts like a system app and you cant delete it, unless you have 'System app remover' software, but then again it needs Root access to work so the whole thing is pointless I guess
And restore stock image HOW? I mean can you elaborate a lil please!
Using Gnex Tool Kit, which option? (my guess, 'Flash Google Factory Stock Rom' cuz for me it works but it wipes all your data.. backup solution?)
Super su has an unroot option
Here's a screenshot attached
Hit Thanks if i helped

But does it work on Jelly Bean?? Also, when you Root Gnex using ToolKit then you have SuperUser and not SuperSU :| Whats the way around it?

Installing supersu and giving it root access to update such binary removes original superuser apps control you can switch just by downloading super su so it should work, cannot test myself though
Hit thanks if I helped

I've seen and answered this question quite a few times so I thought I'd just write down the procedure once so everyone can find it.
So you want the latest OTA and want it rooted but you have no idea how to get there? I can help.
Prior to yesterday I was running rooted stock with TWRP recovery. The OTA failed of course.
In order to install it and root I did the following.
1) install rooted stock image via odin (found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426) This re-nstalled stock recovery.
2) install and run voodoo ota root keeper from the play store to preserve root.
3) took OTA download and let it install
4) ran voodoo OTA rootkeeper to restore root again
5) Install goo manager from play store
6) install twrp via goo manager
7) made a rooted stock nandroid backup.
The above procedure didn't wipe any of my data or settings because I came from rooted stock to begin with. I just used odin to restore the recovery and missing bloatware..
Hope this helps
Do you have the clockworkmkd recovery file I need to flash through odin? Does this mean I don't have to use adb?

I didn't use ADB. I used twrp for my recovery, but you can install rom manager and cwm recovery with it instead of goo manager and twrp.
I lost my root when i did the update...
can you give step by step on how to root again after the update and install the google universal search?
thanks...
Flashed the rooted stock image via Odin, update failed at 27%. Any ideas?
No idea. Just reporting on what worked for me.

If you've disabled or uninstalled stock at&t and Sammy apps (like Flipboard, clocks, etc.) the update will fail. You need to enable/reinstall stock apps.
Hi, I used Voodoo Root Keeper to regain root. However, in my device status it is now saying modified instead of normal. How can I fix that?
You can't. Don't worry about it.

It looked like reflashing the rooted stock rom did reinstall the bloat I removed.

worked fine for me
There's a much easier method to get root back after the update.
Flash CWM/TWRP
Flash the file I attached below.
Install Busybox from market
Reboot
Done deal
It does work. I tested earlier today from G1 stock unrooted. Pulled and installed the update, flashed CWM. Flashed the attached file, busybox download and profit. Then used gooomanager to change to TWRP
Here's the original site I read about this method way back when...
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/easy-guide-root-att-galaxy-s3/
Gunny's method does work, just giving another option
OP guides worked for me. Thanks
I like the new keyboard, less errors.

Yes, it does work. Get a custom recovery back (CWM) and flash the file I attached in my earlier post. Saves the time from flashing a stock rooted ROM and going from there as a starting point.
Anyone tried the recent OTA update using the "OTA survival" option in superuser?
I'm in AT&T S3, rooted but with stock recovery, using mrrobinson's method, building number I747UCALEM.
Wondering whether anyone has tried doing the OTA update and keeping root by using the "temp unroot" and/or "OTA survival" options in Superuser? If so, was it successful, and would you mind giving a quick rundown of the steps?
Thanks!
I did it, I installed Voodoo root keeper backed up my SU app with this app then I removed root with this app also, after thid I just hit the check for update and applied the OTA.
After appling OTA I went to Voodoo app and restored root.
It was very easy let me know if you need any more help.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like you used another app, Voodoo Root Keeper, not Superuser?
Just to err on the side of caution, I should do the following?:
1. get voodoo root keeper
2. go into Superuser and check the "ota survival" box
3. go into voodoo hit "protect root"
4. still in voodoo hit "temp. un-root (keeps backup)"
5. go to about device>software update to check for update
6. apply update
7. once update completes, go back to voodoo? or superuser?
If you're on UCALEM and you're trying to get to the latest version (LH9), you'll have two OTAs to apply: LEM->LG1 and LG1->LH9.
Save yourself a headache and just flash a full LH9. That way you won't have to worry about root. You can find a full flashable LH9 here and also here (in the PIECES section at the bottom of the post).
Either way you go, make sure you make a nandroid first.

Thanks for this advice. I currently don't have a custom recovery installed. How do I go about making a nandroid without it? Do I need to install a custom recovery first?

Sorry, I missed that you still had stock recovery installed. You'll need to have a custom recovery to use the zips from either of the links I posted. If you want to stay on stock recovery, you'll need to apply the two OTAs from AT&T to upgrade.
To install a stock recovery, you can:
Install ROM Manager and use that to flash CWM
Install GooManager and use that flash TWRP
Follow the instructions in this post
Hi, guys! I have some questions for you. Yesterday I updated my rooted nexus 7 to android 4.3. I'm using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper but it looks like this app isn't working on android 4.3 and I have to root my tablet again. The only problem is that I don't know how to backup my apps and all the stuff I have on the tablet. Can you help me with these, please?
PS. I have Titaniumbackup but I didn't backed up the apps before updating to android 4.3.

Have you tried to push SuperSU ?
If not try this:
Download the zip "UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.51.zip" ,
then push to the recovery, scroll down to the file "UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.51.zip", select it and slide the button to flash it and flash it.
Reboot.
In case if you say that you're not root, reboot once again
problem solved! I was afraid that if I root I will lose all my data but then I read that only unlocking bootloader wipes all data. Luckily my bootloader was unlocked so I've just rooted my N7 without losing any data.
